Hank and I 'almost' wrote a couple of great songs one day down in Joe's beach house at the flora-Bama. I also had the privilege of going to his house and recording demo's in his up-stairs studio. What a wonderful and talented man, who was always nice to me and encouraging. I was lucky and blessed to have known him, he was the best.

I was listening to some of Hank's songs
today..I do not think he wrote a song
I didn't love..what a great songwriter
he was..I hope he and my dear friend
Floyd (Tillman) are up there in the
heavenly choir writing and singing.
I would like to point out that Eddy
Arnold did not release Make the World
Go away first..I first heard it July 4th weekend in 1963, Eddy put it out
later and was a bigger hit.. Ray Price
was singing the 7/4/1963 version and
still my favorite..also, I have a 45rpm
of What Kind of Bird Is That, it can't
be a robin because my love is not back
yet. I have never heard it anywhere
but my 45s and it is beautiful..I wish
someone would re-release it...Thanks
Hank for all the wonderful songs and
my memories of them..

Nobody can touch the heart of a nation like the songwriter can. He can
put words to unspoken sorrow, lost loves, lost lives. He can make the
common people speak with the words of a poet, simply by singing along with his songs.
This man & his beautiful lyrics & music will be greatly missed.

To Mr. Cochran's family...I'm saddened to read of his passing, but I know he's welcomed in Heaven! One of his greeters will be my best friend from grade school. We used to sit on my front porch in Memphis and sing his songs, harmonizing. This was all through school..all our lives till I lost her last year. He left us a gift that so enhanced our friendship. One of my very favorite sayings is, and it was anonymous to me, "He who sings prays twice." Some of his songs were like a prayer to me. Whether it was Eddie Arnold or Mickey Gilly singing, "Make the World Go Away," it did not matter. Mr. Cochran had a distinct sound in his ballads.

God bless you in your hour of need.
July 20, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I remember so well back in the mid fifties, my friend Edie and I would go to her house after school and listen to her "hillbilly" records. That's what it was called back then.. In Boston there was a club we later went to as we were older it was called The Hillbilly Ranch. Yessirree i remember Hank Cochran and the likes of him such as Hank Thompson, Hank Snow, Hank Williams Sr. Kitty Wells Tex Ritter...and you know what? Even today if you got into my car, I'd turn on my tapes... yes, i still play tapes and there you hear all these old timers singing and i can drive down the highway and remember every word because I've been listening to them over 50 years. Hank Cochran you're up there now in Hillbilly Heaven...

I had the privilege of meeting Hank in 1974. My first thought was, 'What an amazing intricate mind he has.' Just talking to him you could tell he thought on so many different levels while maybe a song might be brewing. I don't think I have met anyone since that got as much joy out of the simplest things in life.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cochran family.

To Hank, may your journey be taken with soft peaceful steps and your arrival be filled with joy, love and a song. You will truly be missed.
