RIP Helen. You will be missed. I loved watching ATWT, with you in it. Anyone who knew you I know that you brought plenty of smiles to everyone's face that knew you.
May 10, 2011
I just realized that it's been over a year since our greatly admired Helen/Nancy passed away. How I do miss her and ATWT.
I wish there were some way to personally contact either Bob's or Helen's family because I have such a lovely recording of a 1999 interview that I conducted with them. I sent both tape and CD copies to Helen after Bob passed away and hopefully they were found among Helen's possessions.
My continued condolences are to the family and all of Helen's fans.
Fondly, Diane Levinson, San Carlos, CA LevinsonDJ@comcast.net

I am now Lisa's age and miss the show and Nancy very much.
Condolences to the family.

I was six years old when Helen made her debut on As The World Turns. I watched every single show if I wasn't working and even took a TV/Radio combination to work so I could listen to the verbal part on the Radio at work. As a child I even ran from my school bus stop to get home in time to see ATWT. I cannot imagine the show no longer being on but more than that I cannot imagine a World without Helen Wagner. Though I never met her personally, she was a Mother and Grandmother figure in my life. God Bless you Helen and Thank you for many dedicated years of giving us all good advice on how to live life to the fullest. Prayers to your family and many many friends.

Thanks for the many years of enjoyment that you brought to so many. I know God has something special planned for you.

Helen Wagner shone as an accomplished actress with a remarkably long and successful career. She took the character of Nancy Hughes and gave her numerous layers. She never portrayed the cliche perfect wife and mother. Nancy could be tough (she was appalled when another character, a young woman, couldn't shell peas), judgmental and stubborn and she was nobody's fool. But all that was secondary to her sense of responsibility as a wife, parent, aunt, grandparent and friend. She was solid as a rock, a very beautiful rock. Helen breathed life into the ATWT scripts year in and year out. There was never the sense she was acting. She just brought Nancy alive with utter reality. Bless this beautiful, talented, hard working lady.
September 01, 2010
Many thoughts and prayers go out to Helen's family. She had a grand run on As The Worlds Turns maybe the thought of the show coming to an end was just to much for her. Would have great to have her say the closing lines of the show since she sid the opening lines on the first show so many years ago.
RIP Helen/Nancy We all love you..
September 01, 2010

Many thanks Helen for the many things that you taught all of those who watched As The World Turns. You were one classy lady who taught us all much. Today's tribute to you reminded me so much of losing my own grandmother. You will be sorely missed. R.I.P.
August 31, 2010
Thank you Ms. Wagner for your many years of wisdom and grace in life and in character. You provided a maternal figure to many of us for many years. Watching today's tribute episode brought up many memories of losing my own grandmother, thank you for always being warm, wise and cutting edge.
August 31, 2010
I grew up watching Helen with my mother and grandmother who have also passed away. I grieve with her family for she was a dear lady who gave so many people a feeling of home.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My condolences to Helen's family. I began watching ATWT in February, when learning the show was to end this coming September. Being age 58 now, many can likely understand a guy being curious. Many memories of neighbors watching the show in the 1957-era, and thinking "it will always be with us", but will now end this year. We take all these things for granted, until the losses occur. Persons, TV shows, old cars....all are a part of our lives. And all matter, to one extent or another. I always try to say "thank you" to all persons who made life good and interesting. None are ever forgotten.

My heart goes out to Helen's family - her real one and her television one. I have been a fan of As The World Turns since the early days when I used to watch it when I was home from school. Helen's character Nancy was a wonderful character and I have missed seeing her on a regular basis on the show. It has been my sincere wish that ATWT producers would see fit to let Nancy have not only the first words but the last words as well - and maybe they still can in a flashback scene. That would truly be a wonderful gift to fans of hers and the show. May she rest in peace.

I grew up watching Helen every day, while eating noon dinner with both of my parents. My father had gone to college with Helen at Monmouth College and he was always very proud of that fact. We kept track of her by watching the show every day. :) She was one of a kind, on a show that was one of a kind. Sorry to hear 2010 is the end of the road for both. My condolences to her family.

I like so many others grew up watching Mrs. Hughes each day. I was born in 1956 and "watched" (I was supposed to be taking a nap) way back when the show was only 15 minutes. My mom was Nancy's age and they looked alot alike. When my mom passed away in 2003, as odd as it sounds,I felt close to my mom when I watched the soap daily. My mom, also a Helen, and Nancy/Helen can talk about Lisa, Bob and the rest of the crew now for days and days and days. May Mrs. Wagner rest in peace. My condolences to her family on and off the show. She will be missed by many.

As a 61 yr old woman, I watched As The World Turns fron childhood with my dear grandmother who passed away in 1981 at the age of 94 years. She never missed the show and Nancy was her favorite character slong with a very young Lisa :) in those days. She was a character one could look up to and she stayed true to that-she will be missed I know. I know my grandma has been in Heaven a long time but I am sure if Helen is there that when she entered- and Grandma saw her - She said to herself- Look, here comes Nancy Hughes!

I began watching ATWT in 1959 when I was first married. I identified with Nancy and wanted to be the type of mother that she was. I have continued to be a fan of Nancy's and ATWT and will be so saddened when the show ends in September. The absence of Nancy will be felt by all of us. She was like my next door neighbor.

"Nancy" was on my childhood TV screen much of my childhood because Mom watched "As the World Turns" daily. As a kid I didn't know what all of the drama and romance was all about. I didn't get the arguing accentuated by organ music. But "Nancy Hughs" was always the anchor in the storm for the characters around her. Funny how I can have such fond memories of a soap opera character from the old black and white television days.
May 08, 2010
RIP Helen. A great lady
May 08, 2010
All was right with my world when I walked into my grandma's house and she had "As the World Turns" on and she would be happy to see us and discuss the show. Helen Wagner, personified good things and a gracious persona. We are happy and comforted when we see her on TV and hope to know women in our lives like she was on ATWT.
May 07, 2010
Dignity, always the Lady and a great actress in her trade. Rest Ms Helen, May ye rest in Peace.
May 07, 2010
We only just lost James Mitchell from AMC, and now Helen Wagner from ATWT. It seems that all the great ones are leaving us. Helen Wagner's achievement of playing the same character for 54 years is surely a record that will never be surpassed. We will all miss her terribly.
May 07, 2010

I still remember my Mother watching As the World Turns, and Chris and Nancy seemed to always be in the kitchen doing dishes. I always thought that was so unbelievable, because I never saw any husbands or fathers that I knew in the kitchen. That was considered "woman's work!!" What a wonderful actress. I grew up with Nancy and Chris and will always remember those kitchen scenes and the affection they had for each other.
May 07, 2010
She was truly the best thing to ever happen to the show and it's success. I have been watching her for as long as I can remember. She will be truly missed. She will live in our memories.

God speed Nancy Hughes............I have watched you since summer 1957 when I married and moved to KY with my Air Force husband. The next door neighbor had a TV and I would visit and watch the program with her. I watch sometimes now but I don't like the direction the program has taken so I am not a devout watcher ........

Helen you will be sorely missed, but what a wonderful legacy you have left behind. You will not be forgotten. May God bring comfort to your family as well as to your extended ATWT family. I just know you and my Grandmother's are now enjoying each other's company in that beautiful place called Heaven. Rest in peace dear, sweet lady. You are home now.

Like a lot of the people signing this book, I grew up watching As The Word Turns with my mother. Mrs Wagner, you were made the show worth watching. You were a tower of strength to your show family and I loved watching you fix other people's problems. It may have been just a show but, things that you said rung true in the real world. I just saw you on the show a few days ago and was wondering how long you had been on the show and how much longer you were going to stay on it as I could tell you were getting a little frail. But, you still showed so much more strength that anyone I know. The show will not be the same without you and your advice and I will miss you so much. I just hope they don't cancel it. Godspend Mrs. Wagner and God Bless you for all the lives you have touched.
May 06, 2010

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Nancy taught me a lot about being a housewife and mother. I remember her rolling out dough wearing a nice dress and pearls. She was talking to grandpa. I watched the show from the first thru 1970 when my children grew up and I went to work for my husband, a doctor.

My most memorable episode was when Penny came out of amnesia and realized Jeff was dead.

Thanks for the memories.

We began together. How fitting that she didn't wait for the show to end. Just like Nancy of her! Sweet memories! My love and deepest sympathy to ALL who loved her, and that's a lot of folks! And my deepest thanks for the gift she shared with us all. Gracie Menhel, Greenville, Mississippi

"There was no one like Nancy in the kitchen." Those words were spoken by my own mom, who was an avid fan, and who I lost in 2007. I cannot say it any better - I am so sorry for your loss - Helen/Nancy was a one-of-a-kind lady.

May 04, 2010
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING ATWT FOR A LONG TIME.SHE WILL BE MISSED BY ALOT OF PEOPLE.
May 04, 2010
Nancy Hughes was the kind of mother most of us wish we had. I'll bet Helen was the same in real life.
May 04, 2010
I've been watch As the World Turns for almost 45 years, starting on a black and white TV. Nancy and the Hughes family have brought me many hours of enjoyment. Nancy played a lovely and kind woman, yet she had a mind of her own. She played her character very well. Even though she did not write the words she said, when she spoke them, and was making a point during a discussion, I too would sometimes learn some valuable lessons. I will miss Nancy, as I will so very much miss As The World Turns when it leaves the air this Fall. I wish CBS would change their mind. Thank you Nancy for all of your years of wonderful entertainment. Rest in Peace!
May 04, 2010

Dear Wagner Family,

What a wonderful life this lady lived. It seems she had the best that life could offer. However, the future actually holds even a better life as Psalms 37:11 says "the meek ones will inherit the earth and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace". May God's word bring you comfort at the sad time.
May 04, 2010
Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes was a wonderful part of As The World Turns - she play Wife, Mother, Grandmother and advisor to others. Sometimes, even when they didn't want her help. :) I grew up watching ATWT and I am 65. I read some where that she was upset with the upcoming cancellation of ATWT and I agreed with her. Please don't replace it with another game show! She made the show authentic - Thanks Helen for a job well done! You will be missed as Nancy and I am sure to your family and friends. God Loves YOU and so do I! BTW my Mother's name was Helen :)
May 04, 2010

Although I stopped watching the Soaps some 16 years ago, I will always cherish the character Helen Wagner created, Nancy Hughes. As a small child, I would watch all the CBS soaps with my mother as she did her ironing...they were all 15 minutes long. Actresses such as Ms. Wagner are so rare these days, she will be missed.
May 04, 2010
This lady was a part of a daily routine that started with my mother from the very first show, her character was someone easily related to as a mother, grandmother and advisor. She was correct in her assessment of the turn of the program, and I am sorry the show will not be airing after September this year, it as well as her character will be missed. My sincere condolences to her personal & theater family. Sue Teel

May 04, 2010
Deepest sympathy in the loss of a great lady. I watched "As The World Turns" with my grandmother in my early years, and the characters were so typical of the elders in my life at the time, especially Nancy, Chris, and Grandpa. In later years I continued to watch the show in the summer and during school vacations and nearly every day as a college student but had to drop out after entering the working world. In later years I appreciated even more what it took for that show to have been done live for so many years. Thanks for many great memories.
May 04, 2010
My mother have always watched As The World Turns every day.She will always have wonderful memories of Helen Wagner. She will always be a part of our family. Our prayers go out to the family.

I first began watching ATWT in 1970.........I had just graduated college and it came on during my lunch hour so I started and haven't stopped. Nancy was such a wonderful character for all of us to emulate. I'm so glad that she was included in the recent story of Bob and Kim's "surprise" birthday party fiasco so that we all could enjoy her on screen. She will be missed by all the fans and my condolences go to both her t.v. family and to her biological family. What a great lady and what a great legacy she leaves behind.

May 04, 2010
I am so sorry to hear of Helen Wagner's passing. ATWT was my mother's favorite daytime drama, and I would "watch" it with her when she rocked me to sleep when I was just a baby. I continued to watch it, and will watch it until it ends this year.

My condolences to her family. She was a true lady.
May 04, 2010
Our Baby Grand Piano had the usual family pictures on top of it, except one picture of a family we never met, The Hughes Family. My Mom had sent away to Procter & Gamble and received a picture of the Hughes's who had become a part of our extended family before even I did. One of my first memories is of standing in my playpen, sucking my thumb, and watching As The World Turns while my Mom ate her lunch. I'm saddened by her departure. There's not enough "Old School" representation anymore.
May 04, 2010
One of my fondest memories is of watching As The World Turns with my grandmother when it began in 1956. I still watch most every day.
Nancy has always been one of my favorite!
My love and prayers go to her family.

My mother watched As The World Turns every day, and as a child, when I was home, I watched it, too. When President Kennedy was shot, my mother (as usual), was doing her ironing in front of the TV watching that show. The character of Nancy Hughes stands out in my mind more strongly than any other on the show. Rest in peace Helen Wagner, and thanks for the great memories of many years past.

Helen was always her favorite and those early days of watching with my mom are memories that I will always cherish. I will continue to be a fan as well, but ATWT will never be the same. I'm only sorry that Helen didn't live to be on the final show as well. God Bless you, Helen - you will be missed.

I remeber the few times I have met you and your lovely wife. My condolences to you. Bob Beggan

Our condolences to "Nancy's" family and friends. She was a great, well respected actress. We in the TV audience will miss her, and also miss "As the World Turns". Had the writers and producers listened to her, maybe the Soap would have survived another 50 years. The characters morals and the plots have been terrible for the past few years! Bring back the "Nancy" lifestyle and a successful Soap will be made!
RIP Helen, and Thank you for generations of us being able to view your work! You will be remembered, and you will be missed!

I am a huge ATWT fan steadily since the 1970's, but my memory of the show goes back to the 1960's when my grandmother watched it. I first got to know the characters then. I watched it from time to time during my school years and into college. I was always interested enough to read the summaries if I missed episodes. I remember Helen appearing in recent episodes this past year - how totally remarkable that she stayed in good health for so long that she continued to play the character of Nancy Hughes for half of her own lifetime! I know my grandmother is glad to have her in heaven! I will remember her always with a smile. What a great lady.
May 04, 2010

I am sad to hear of her passing. I started watching the show with my Mom when I was just a little girl in the 60's. Our last name was Hughes, so I always felt like Nancy and Chris were my relatives, and Papa Hughes was the grandpa that I never got a chance to know. My grandparents had all died before I was born. I'm in my mid fifties now and I still feel like these characters are part of my family. Nancy was always so kind and loving, not to mention wise. She will be missed.

My grandmother and I watched her stories together for many years as a child and I continue to this day at 46....I will miss ATWT when it ends and most certainly the character of Nancy Hughes. I'm sure this is a difficult time for both her on air and at home family. God Bless. Kris (Toledo OH)

How deeply saddened I am over the loss of dear, sweet, Helen Wagner. When I heard that ATWT was leaving the air, my first thought was that without the show, I won't be able to see Helen Wagner anymore. I watched ATWT from the first episode and those were the Good Old Days when we visited with Nancy in her kitchen, busily at work she'd be talking with someone who came to discuss a problem and get Nancy's advice or just some support from a good friend. Everybody trusted Nancy as their confident and most conversations took place in that famous kitchen. As the world was changing, ATWT also changed to fit in with today's world, but I always looked forward to seeing Nancy on the screen. She will be greatly missed.
May 03, 2010
How very sorry I am for your lost. I will always have wonderful memories of Helen on As the World Turns as Nancy and her T.V. husband Chris and the children. Lots of prays and great memories to your family.

How to find the words? This lovely lady broke all television records. How lucky I was to interview her and audio tape her wisdom in 1999. I too watched ATWT since 1956, as a teenager and to the present, and I am the middle of five generations of my family to "know" Helen/Nancy through her portrayal. I wish the "powers that be" could see these tributes and realize that "the World should keep Turning," if only in Helen's memory.
My sincere condolences to her family, the cast and crew of ATWT and all who loved her.
May 03, 2010
To Helen's family, May God bless you in your time of grief. You are in my prayers.

So Helen (Nancy), The world stopped turning for you on 05/01/2010. I wish to thank you for all of the wonderful years you gave me and my mother on ATWT. A finer person could not have graced my television screen five days a week for so many years. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet you in person at a ATWT fan club event approximately ten years ago. You were just as warm and friendly in person as your Nancy character was on ATWT.

May 03, 2010
The end of an era. I started watching ATWT back when I was a little bitty kid. I remember watching while my mother ironed, including when JFK was shot. Mrs. Wagner was my mother's favorite character, and after my mother's death, I had ATWT as a link to her. (Mrs. W reminded me a lot of my mother in looks and mannerisms.) I feel almost as if I have lost my mother again with the loss of Mrs. Wagner. She was the epitome of lady to me. I grieve for your loss and pray for your family.
May 03, 2010
I remember the frist show of As the world turns. I was only 23 and it was the frist soap opera I had ever seen. Helen played the mom role and made it seem so real. She will be missed by many.
At John 11:25 Jesus said "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. HE THAT EXERCIES FAITH IN ME, EVEN THOUGH HE DIES, WILL COME TO LIFE."
May you and yours lean on Jehovah God for the strength you need at this sad time. (PSALMS 83-18)
Sincerely

May your constant light in heaven guide our path now and forever, just as your smile brightened our days when we were fortunate enough to have you with us.
May 03, 2010
A sad day in the lives of many of us who grew up with the bread or rolls baking and the sweet smile from Nancy/Helen's kitchen. She was as protective of her family as a momma bear, but could be a hard as nails when she needed to be. Her character taught us all some great life lessons, and Helen had to be a little that way to make us believe we could be the same way. A great loss!

May 03, 2010
I saw Mrs. Wagoner's very first show (in a re-run celebrating the show a few years later.) and I saw her most recent appearance at Bob & Kim's 25th Anniv. and the marriage ceremony which was re-done a short few weeks ago. I have watched the show as often as I could since I first got a TV-in 1960!!!. I had seen it a few X before, but was preg. with my first child in 1960 and my spouse gave me a TV for Christmas because I loved the soaps so!! I have watched it as often as possible since and have many tapes of OLD shows. I was hoping that Nancy would be on the last show since ATWT is being cancelled. I hope that the show does a fitting Memorial to Helen. She deserves it.

When Helen's sister died recently I sent her a card. and she sent a note via SOD expressing gratitude for those who contacted her at the time.

I send my condolences to her family and will have them in my prayers at this time.
I know Mrs Wagner was a gracious lady or she could not have played Nancy so well!
May 03, 2010
Helen was a true inspiration for people to do the right thing. That is something television producers no longer support in their presentations where there are many young people who will not take the high road. She will be greatly missed on the show as the backbone of how good people should live their lives. I have "known" 'Nancy Hughes' since I was nine years old. I will miss her.
May 03, 2010
Thank you Helen for the many years you gave ATWT..I have watched you since I can remember.. You will forever be in my heart and missed deeply. My condolences to the ATWT family.

I am so sorry to hear of Helen Wagner passing. I will truly miss seeing her on one of my favorite day time shows. I have recorded this show for years and watch it at night. Her personality and whisdom will truly be missed and I know that her character had to be her own. No one could play a part like that with out it being a true part of your life. You were one of the best and I will truly miss your whisdom, understanding and love that you shared on As The World Turns even before I was born.

Nancy was the kind of actress everyone would enjoy and watch. She was a mother, grand-mother and friend we all wish we had. I have a memory of Nancy early on in the telecast with her sitting in her kitchen snapping beans!! She helped to make the show the success it's been all these years. I've been there with them all. I began watching this show in the summer of 1975,back in the day when the phone was answered "Lowell, Hughes and Coleman". This actress was a blessing to us all. With the ending of the show in a few months, this proves that she was a true southern lady. She knows when to leave the room with grace and dignity. To her family on set and off, I send heartfelt condolonces to you. She will be missed by all that knew her.
