We all will miss your smile and laughter . You enjoyed so much talking with the people you interviewed. Heaven was waiting for you.
We watched the California Railway Museum and golden spike episodes in Sacramento tonight and I found myself crying. He'll was really an amazing part of California's gold. He loved life and people and brought his love of history and strangeness, like the avocado eating dog, into our homes for so many years. He was like an old friend! I am so happy he got to hold not one but two golden spikes.
My mom &I made thursday nights our "California Gold" night once we discovered it. It was so neat to learn things a out our state history that we never knew &couldn't in a book, as well as learn to value the unexpected side trips and surprises that result.
THIS WAS A GREAT MAN. TAUGHT ME MORE ABOUT CALIFORNIA THEN ANY SCHOOLING OR BOOK HAD/ I AM AM A NATIVE CALIFORNIAN OF WHITE/NATIVE ANCESTRY AND HAVE MORE APPRECIATION FOR THIS STATE BECAUSE OF HUELL. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A HUELL HOWSER DAY CELEBRATED IN CALIFORNIA EVERY YEAR. I am from San Jose originally.
WE MISS YOU HUELL! And your great shows!
I loved Huell he was truly an a American Icon. I am still watching his show and cannot believe he is gone. God Bless you Huell!
I LOVED YOUR WHITTY CHARM, AND YOU ARE TRULY MISSED.
I remember the episode of the old man who previously trained an elephant in the circus and Huell took him back to the zoo to see if the elephant remembered him. It was so moving when the elephant came running toward him. I cried. I will never forget Huell and I will miss him.
you are missed... the world would be a better place if there were more people like you...
I watched Huell all the time and so did everyone else. I will miss him.
Huell was a great person. I watched his show while I lived in California and continued when I moved to Nevada! I loved his slight accent and his enthusiasm for everything! I will miss him and I will keep him in my thoughts when I feel down!
To, the family of Mr. Huell Howser, you have my deepest sympathy. I, have watched Mr. Howser, on his "California's Gold" television program over the years, and always enjoyed them. However, I was sad and shocked to hear of his passing, during a recent news broadcast in Sacramento, which highlighted the exhibit of the "California's Gold" program, at the "160th" California State Fair. He, has left an indelible mark, on California's history. He, will be missed.

I remember seeing Huell Howser when he was in Nashville. Also caught some of his California Gold shows, wish I had seem more. He and his shows were very entertaining. Happy to know California loved him.
I learned so much about California from watching Huell on TV. I learned about places I had never heard of. Thank You for opening my eyes and giving me a greater appreciation of the great qualities and treasures of California
Shocked and sad to learn of the passing of Huell Howser. My husband and I always enjoyed all his episodes of "California Gold". I've lived here nearly all my life and I wouldn't trade California for anywhere else in the world. Mr. Howser always made such wonderful presentations. We'll all miss him, I am sure. Noisette (Sun City, CA)
My husband and so enjoyed our years watching Mr Houser. I am a native Californian and he is from Pittsburgh. We took many road trips throughout California . California is a beautiful place. I look forward to the promise that God gives us found in psalms 37:29 " The righeteous themselves will posses the EARTH, and they will live FOREVER upon it" hopefully Huel will be able to explore many more beautiful spots of this earth then ...

Huell -- Thank you so much for sharing your unique perspective and love for the people, places and stories of our state, California. May you find eternal rest from your labors and cares of this life. What a life well lived! We will never forget you ...
Love watching Mr. Howser's California Gold and will continue to watch it as long as I can. I did not have a favorite one, because I like them all. Hearing his voice, hearing the excitment in it, and seeing him, was like watching a child on Christmas morning. Mr. Howser may be gone, but his legacy will live on for many years to come thru his shows. Mr. Hower made many memories for us to treasurer.
Now Mr. Howser as you enter the gates of Heaven, you will have found the ultimate "Gold and Treasers" of all. God Bless!
I enjoyed Huell's great pieces on WSMV-TV News in Nashville, Tennessee. Huell was always so much fun to watch, and we missed him terribly when he moved to California. However, we were proud to claim that he was one of us--a Tennessean! Thanks for the great stories you brought to us, Huell!
We loved the show and watched it with out kids. We learned a lot about California and your enthusiasm was contagious. Sorry to hear of your passing too soon. So glad you left a legacy for us to all re-watch and remember. God's speed to you.
Last Sunday, as my family and my grandchildren and I walked through the Street of Alvera Street I thought about Huell Howser. I could feel his presence there. My condolences to his family. We will miss his smile and his voice and his laughter. R.I.P. Huell Howser
Huell I was looking forward to some new adventures from you but now I know why. I'm was very surprised to hear of your passing you always looked so healthy...you will be missed deeply by all your loyal viewers...
RIP.Looking forward to your Heavens Golden Stories...

Huell Howser, the best of California's Gold.
Thank you for leaving the Gold for all to enjoy now and in the years to come.
May you rest in peace Huell, thank you for opening our eyes and hearts to Californias Gold...you are and always will be amazing....
Thank-you for showing and teaching us so much about Our beautiful California and beyond....I feel as thought I have lost a family member. Heaven has certainly received a Golden Angel in you . Rest In Peace . With Deep Sympathy to the Family of Huell.
HE WILL WIPE OUT EVERY TEAR FROM THEIR EYES,AND DEATH WILL BE NO MORE,NEITHER WILL MOURNING NOR OUTCRY NOR PAIN BE ANYMORE.THESE THINGS WILL HAVE BEEN WIPED AWAY."WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT TIME...SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.
A life well lived and shared. He'll be missed. Rest in peace.
Can't help feeling that I lost someone I knew. He was just that kind of guy. He always seemed genuine and sincere and I loved his enthusiasm. He obviously never lost his wonder and that's rare in this day and age. I loved all of his shows, especially the one on the origin of the squeegee (my husband owns a window cleaning company) and the one about the exact center of California. I'll miss hearing him say, "How about that!!!!" Rest well, Huell... you will be missed.
Just a supurb human being who brougt out the best in all of us. N. Johnson
...the cobbler factory...the reunion of the elephant and her keeper...the butter- flies...and of course, the whistling ladyin the poppy field..."Califorina Here I Come." Indeed, we are all so lucky that Huell Howser came to California.
Loved your show on the ST.GEORGES Lighthouse off Crescent City. You brought that old retired lighthouse to life...
A huge loss for shows to watch and learn and enjoy~ his energy was contagious and his accent will stay with me forever! Very sad news.
For teaching me so much about the Golden State of California. Many thanks.
Sorry to hear of Huell's passing. I've been long time gone from California but grew up watching California Gold and even met Mr. Howser once in Twentynine Palms. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family and friends.
Our Golden State has sadly lost a beloved and wonderful person with the passing of Huell Howser. Huell showcased California in so many different ways. From all of its beauty to the everyday people who live and work in it. I hope that Huell Howser will always be recognized and remembered in the same company as of naturalist John Muir and photographer Ansel Adams. He certainly deserves the honor. Thanks Huell for all the great California road shows you produced and shared with us. You were truly an amazing and spectacular Californian who will be deeply missed.
jutta spitzer, lancaster ca,you will be missed,so sad to see you go,some day will meet again!!!!!!
We will forever miss your spirit and joy of sharing your journeys through California.
As Tennesseans, we have never forgotten how much we enjoyed your early adventures here, and we have loved seeing California through your eyes more recently.
Dear Huell and family, I always looked forward to watching cal. gold your uplifting personality made it even more interesting and fun to watch. You truly left memories all over california! I was a little disappointed when I first heard you retired and sadness when I discovered you passed. I would have loved to have met you in person but I feel as if I knew you. You were truly an inspiration and you will truly be missed. Thank you for bringing us cal. gold and I feel even more proud to be from california. God bless you and your family.
You were so personable I fell I know you and will miss you. You were so truly interested in whatever you were showing us the no one could resist sharing in your curiosity.
I will miss you.
Mr Howser you were a blessing to the people of California and made
everyone feel like you were good friends with them. You educated the young and the
old alike WITH a joy I have never seen in a person / even the simple things mattered to you / GOD Bless you Love Rest in Peace we will miss you Huell
We will miss seeing Huell and all the episodes of "California's Gold". We were dancing at the McCloud Dance Country Hall when he filmed the episode of McCloud, California. We thank Huell for all the shows about the beauty of California and its cities and towns. May God bless him.
You made so many people smile and learn. You were one of a kind. Many blessings on your new adventure.
I feel I knew you personally because you always came through my TV screen as a friend. I shall miss you greatly. May angels attend your spirit.

Dear Huell, please come back!We have so many adventures to go...we both tread on a lot of the same ground and you did several stories in the area where I was born and grew up.(Crescent City and Smith River)We already miss you!!!Rich Jackson,North Highlands,Ca.
Huell, you have put the cities of California on the map. You have made us proud to be a Californian! Thank you for enriching our lives with your new discoveries. We miss you dearly.
Huell Howser was the best. He had a way that made you feel like you had actually been to those many, fascinating places. He just made you feel like family. I've been so many places and learned so much without ever leaving my home. Thank you, Mr. Howser for leaving so many great feelings to so many. You will be missed immensely.
I thank God for sending us this wonderful man who let us see things we would never have had the opportunity to experience. He was a California Treasure. Rest in peace our friend.
Huell, I will miss you so much! You will live on in your marvelous work and in all our hearts. Blessings and love, Anna xo
WE'LL ALL MISS HUELL. BUT,THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THIS IS FOR ALL OF THE EPISODES OF CALIFORNIA GOLD AND THE MANY PEOPLE HE TOLD US ABOUT THAT MADE THIS STATE SO GREAT.... HE GETS TO MEET THEM NOW. SURE WISH WE COULD HV A SHOW WITH HUELL NAMED : "CALIFORA GOLD AFTER I LEFT AND MEET THEM ALL" MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS HIM AS HE BLESSED US WITH HIS WIT AND HUMOR. HE DID - ENTERTAINED - US! "Mr.Howser will be missed by his many fans. "FOR HE IS TRUELY CALIFORNIA'S GOLD" PEACE BE WITH HIM AND HIS FAMILY..... GREG/KALELE PLEASANT HILL, CA.
We are very sadden by Huell's passing. We always enjoyed watching him on CA Gold and learning about all the fascinating places to go see and do. Huell's enthusiasm and honest joy of life was inspirational. He will be missed.
In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.
I NEVER MET YOU, YET I FEEL LIKE I LOST A BEST FRIEND. RIP.....PAUL M. PORT HUENEME, CA
Dear Huell, I am so very saddened by your passing and leaving us. I never met you, but I grew to love you because of all your TV shows about our state of California and what you did to educate us and bring us pleasure also. I will miss you terribly. Rest in peace, you dear man. Good-bye for now. Sharoll, San Jose, Calif.
Will Miss Your Warm Smile... You made me smile too! Good bye - friend!
I haven't felt this way since we lost Lucille Ball. Huell was the kind of person that found a cardboard box fascinating. I learned to love the simple things from him.
You were wonderful. The only thing that takes the tears away is the thought of all the people you're getting to interview in heaven, like John Muir, and the circus tree guy. You've spoke with the families, stood in front of their now historical homes and now you're getting to speak with the real deals. 'Oh my gosh,' and the view you must have of our golden state from heaven must be 'spectular'. If any one deserves a star on the sidewalk, it's you. 'Give us a wave' once in awhile by sending rainbows. I'll know they're from you. You've been on my tv everyday for years. I feel like I've lost part of my family. Rest in peace dear friend.
One of the best friends I ever had but never had. He seemed so down to earth that we welcomed him into our home with his "California Gold" series every Thursday night. Huell Howswer was truly a California treasure.
Mr.Howser will be missed by his many fans.May the God of all comfort and hope be with you in the days ahead.
You made me want to go on road trips and see more of California. You will be missed
TV celebs, actors and other public personalities come and go. For some I've been saddened at our loss but in the case of Huell I felt genuine grief. I never met him but my wife did. I always wanted to see him in person. The genuine character of his TV programs were special. He had the formula to make it all real and personal. My deepest sympathy to those close to him. His passing is a real loss.
He will be greatly missed.
Huell, you were my hero and I've used your style as my model for "meetin and greatin" people while being a docent at Monrovia Canyon Park (MCP). You were one of the "good guys" on local So Cal TV
Honored to have met him. He was "one of a kind". God be with his family.
You were GOLD!Our only disappointment is that we never got to meet you in person and thank you for the California education you gave to us all. You will truly be missed , we felt you were our friend. Rest Peacefully. Mike and Arianne Danforth
Met Huell and he was just so nice, getting some food at Farmers Market, we will really miss him, he was "gold!
I miss him more than I thought I would.
What a treasure we found in you and you shows Huell when we moved to California 7 yrs ago. Thank you for all the wonderful and spontaneous travels, for making us feel home wherever you were, and your kind and caring words. How wonderful that you have donated your life works and your legacy to Chapman University so that all your shows will be digitized and free to see for future generations, and for the foundation you have set up to benefit others. We will miss you terribly but smile when we again see any of your shows knowing that you loved us all. Thanks for sharing with us you enthusiasm for life and California. Rest now in the arms of our great God. The Grieses - Temecula, Ca
I was saddened when I learned Huell was retiring but was thankful for all the wonderful shows in which he shared so much of himself - his enthusiasm and curiousity and his warmth when interviewing people. I was hopeful he would have many years to share with his family and friends. What a shock to learn of his passing so soon following his retirement. My prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace.
Huell, thanks for all the memories!
Hope reruns will continue. They never get old they just turn to gold he was so amazing
As a young adult, Huell's voice echoed in my home as we watched California Gold. Some places I knew of, but many I never knew about until Huell visited them. As an aspiring journalist, Huell was and will continue to be a wonderful role model - no story is too small, insignificant, big, or boring. Huell could make any destination, anywhere, sound amazing. My family enjoys the memory of his visit to the avocado farm, where he was very interested in the dogs who ate the avocados. Huell, California Gold will never be the same. You Gave life to California destinations, and have inspired us to live life up to its fullest potential!
One time Huell was riding in the cab of a Steam Locomotive. When the Fireman opened the Firebox door, Huell, who sometimes would say "oh my gosh" exclaimed " OH MY GOD " in a full Octave up and down tone that was his reaction and his style! He has left California and now is walking those Gold Streets in Heaven, Interviewing Angels, and asking them in great big simple effective words about stuff and things the way only Huell could do ! What a Great Historian for California. I was sorry to hear about his failing health. Now I've got to see which of his adventures are being shown on PBS, re-visiting with a friend I never met, but liked from the start. Thank You Huell for taking us places we never really knew about before, and Thank You for promoting California and Public Television. Your Legacy is as vast as a child's amazement with the world, pure and true. Thank You..
From the Cantutay family of Northern Cal. Our sincere condolence to the Howser family. We enjoyed watching Huell. He will be deeply missed, Thanks for the memories
You made me see, and appreciate what a beautiful state California is. Thank you. You will be missed.
From the Rose family of Northern Cal. We give our sincere condolence. We have enjoyed watching Huell. He will be deeply missed, Thanks for the memories.
I didn't think that the passing of Huell Howser would affect me as much as it has. I've never met Huell, but for some reason, I am
profoundly saddened at his passing. He has become more of a friend than just another TV personality. I've watched his shows for the last 18 or 19 years
and slowly discovered that life is about the journey, and not necessarily the destination.
Over the years Huell has taken me to the top of a windmill, in a man made tunnel through a mountain, Watts Towers, lady bugs breeding
in a forest, riding in a car/boat, inside the top of L.A. City Hall, riding in mini cars, glider soaring, a French restaurant, the four corners of
California, museums, the Salton Sea, flowers in Death Valley, a doll museum, a place where twisted trees make beautiful designs, tamales
factory, bug breeding business, whale watching, old western towns, the top of the Golden Gate bridge and on and on.....
Huell has helped me realize that the small things in life mean a lot; to slow down and smell the roses.
Thanks to Huell, my life has been greatly enriched. . I am now saddened to know that the adventures with him have come to an end. It's time to
head out and discover new and wonderful things and people, but without his wit and friendly smile.
What a loss to all who knew him, such a warm and wonderful personality, with a talent for discovery and bringing out the best in people. I have watched him for many years, since I discovered him on our local public television programming with C.G.
As a fellow tennessean, we had a common interest in CA and all we could discover with him. On trips we managed to go to some of the places he covered on the shows. I feel a kinship after all these years. He was a great human being, wonderful personality and a southern accent that he never lost. Everyone could relate to him. He will be so sadly missed and NEVER replaced.
Thank you for sharing all the wonderful stories amd laughter with us the veiwers, we already miss you. Our thoughts and prayers to your family. Tim and Gina Leber(Boerne,Tx.)
A true poet for the people of this Golden State. Not unlike Woodie Guthrie, who sang for America, Huell's golden voice and captivating wonderment served us all with heart.
He will be sorely missed.
My son and I are so sad and Mr. Howser's passing. We watched his show every week on KPBS San Diego. I had the pleasure to share an afternoon with him several years ago at a Spring Traing game in Arizona. He was a gentleman with a natural curiosity about life.
My favorite show of his was when he went searching throughout L.A. for the graves of famous Hollywood animals. His guide took Huell to parking lots, run-down apartment buildings, and strip malls, but Huell made this man feel like what he had to offer was the most interesting thing Huell had ever encountered.
A void has been created in our lives.
I see by the many messages I've read in your guestbook that I'm not alone in feeling such a great loss; the feeling as if a part of my family has passed is so strong in my heart. Huell will be greatly missed in my life, I've enjoyed him every evening, showing my great state and so much more....I shed a tear for one Great Great Man, and the sorrow for the loss to his family. God Bless!
Rest in peace Huell. Your enthusiam, your love of people and love for a good story are a wonderful legacy.
Part of the fabric of our lives has frayed...After the loss of my mother, someone wrote "You know what you have lost. Over time, you will discover what you have gained." We viewers of his shows already know what we have gained. In one small example,he inspired my family to go to Death Valley(where my now 94 year old father had grown up)after torrential rains had made a lake where none had ever been, and saw the bloom of wildflowers as never before. My dad had a chance to share family history, and commented that, as old as he was, he saw new things on that trip--the aforementioned lake and wildflowers, and $4/gallon gas! Miss you already, Huell.
Truly an inspiration is Huell Howser. We can and honor him and remember his life by adding his love and enthusiasm for California to our outlook.
I have tears in my eyes as I write this and think about the wonderful places you took us. My husband would always want to visit them too. I remember the sea lions by Cambria and many other places. You were one of a kind. Rest in peace you are blessed.
As always wishing you a California Gold journey.
Huell Howser's passing has left a void on our hearts and family. He had a heart of gold, our golden state will miss him.I got to met him in person.
.never in a million years would have thought the death of Huell would be so devastating to me..like losing a family member..well I guess he kinda was..after all he did show up in my living room at 7:30pm just about every evening. I guess too it brings up memories of my dad. My dad and I would watch Californias Gold together often. Hey maybe Huell is up there in heaven interviewing my dad and mom about their biker days for Heavens version of PBS...ABS..Angel Broadcast Station....will miss you Huell
Huell was a dear friend at UT and later when we both landed in Nashville. Fortunately, so many were able to enjoy his wonderful humor and God-given talent for telling stories. He will be missed by all who knew him. He left this world much too soon.
The shine from California's Gold will never be as bright. Our family cannot thank you enough for sharing your obvious passion and wonderment for the good things past and present that are a part of California.
Our prayers are with his family.Huell was a part of our family.Thank you for sharing him with us.We love him. Charles and Diane Groves,Porterville,CA
What a gem California has lost! My family loved watching his shows to learn some history and some new places to visit. His shows never disappointed and he will be missed.
Thank you for your service to our country also.
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
"So terribly saddened to learn of Huell's passing. Gosh, it was wonderful that he invited us to travel with Him around our beautiful state. His enthusiasm and joy, just attracted his audience that much more. No one could truly replace Huell. He will Long be remembered, and sorely missed.
I have rarely seen such an outpouring of affection for a TV personality upon their passing, but in Huell's case, it is well deserved. He was a special man and found joy in the little things, meeting people, and showing us what we have here in California. My wife and I watched his shows for 20 years, and as far as I am concerned, he had the only true reality show. His AMAZING personality made it all work. He cannot be replaced, and we are deeply saddened by his passing, and like many of you, felt like we lost a close personal friend. He deserved a long retirement, to bask in the adulation of his fans. I believe no one has done more for California in the last 25 years than Huell Howser.
Adios, amigo, you will never be forgotten for the legacy you left us with.
Paul & Willie Smith
What a treasure Huell was, a real honest person that took us all along on his California adventures. Whenever one of his programs is on TV, we have to watch, because, we know it will take us to another either unknown or revisited area. He was one of a kind, a friend without ever meeting. He will most certainly be missed! Rest in peace my dear Huell...........
My deepest sympathy to his family. We shared a Huell Howser moment on New Years Eve.We were cooking our traditional Menudo and we remembered when he visited the factory. My sister and I looked at eachother and asked"What is actually in Menudo?" to quote him. We loved you RIP
Rest in Peace Huell you will be missed
Huell Howser, was truly "California gold". RIP, we will all miss you!
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Huell Howser, I still cannot believe it. I met him a few years ago by Olvera Street in L.A. he was so nice. I've been watching his shows forever and love every one of them. He was truly a great guy. I, too, like so many went to many of the places that he showed us. I Love U Huell and I will miss you very much. Thanks for all the wonderful memories.
Remembering Huell Howser ...
... a genuine and most friendly spirit!
My condolences to all who knew and honored this man. I met Huell once at The Original Farmer's Market in L.A. and I have re-told THAT story to my friends more times than they'd like to hear. Few have done more for the state of California than Huell. His enthusiastic and inquisitive approach was unlike anyone I've ever met and I will miss him.
I heard the news at 5:15 this morning as I was driving from Fresno to Bakersfield and my heart felt as if I just lost one of my best friends. Tears formed in my eyes just to think this gentle man is not with us. Then I realized he will forever be with me every time I cross the Golden Gate Bridge, walk through the Giant Redwoods, go to the four corners of California, watch the sun raise in the Mojave Desert and set in the Pacific Ocean, Huell will be there. I did not have the honor to meet Huell in person; however, I have grown to know him to be one of the kindness and gentlest person to come into my life. The number of lives he has touched would be countless. To say you will be missed is an understatement, how lucky we are that you had the forethought to record all of your many adventures. Now your new adventure is just beginning, you did such a great job talking about California; God has called you home to have you show Heaven off with the same enthusiasm you did for The Golden State.
I can see Huell right now when he entered those Pearly Gates saying to God, “WOOOW! THIS IS AMAZING! I HAVE NEVER SEEN SOME THIS BEAUTIFUL IN MY WHOLE LIFE” What Huell's eyes must behold right now would get an unending amount of WOW's out of him.
May God Bless you my friend and hold you close to Him. Thank You for all the golden years Huell!
Huell, you never failed to bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart. Thank you. God bless and rest in peace
You made all of my California trips better...You will be missed...Weekly!
I was really hurt when my wife told that he has pass away.Because I met Huell at Brotherhood raceway park in terminial Island and when he came over to the pit area with his film crew and ask me did I build this dragster and I told him yes ,thats when he said could I interview you at the starting line so I took him on the golf kart so I can get ready to start up the dragster and when it fired up he said WOW THATS AMAZING Huell was a very nice guy to talk to , and the cool thing about him it did not matter what race creed or color you was he would stand with that mic. in your face and ask you questions. You Will Be Miss PEACE from Andre McTaw AkA WILD MAC .
You were a tower of strength as you traveled far and wide--- sharing, caring, and teaching us about CA.
Our family often took your advice and enjoyed visiting the places you visited like San Juan Capistrano, parks, beaches, lighthouses, the wine country near Paso Robles, etc. So many...
You made regular folks so happy when you enjoyed their city, their food, their
culture, their treasures, and their history.
As children ,we enjoyed the Happy Wanderer...(You even did a show about him
with his relatives.).....and to us you were a California Happy Wanderer...
My 4th grade class so enjoyed viewing your CA Mission series when they were preparing to make miniature replicas of their chosen mission as a class project.
I also shared your Cabrillo adventure, with them.
You inspired people to not be couch potatoes and to venture-out, without fear but with a sense of REAL adventure...
Everyone will miss you. You left us way too soon.
On Monday nite, there was a tribute to you.
We especially loved seeing you sing: California,Here We Come... with students and teachers from a music academy...It cheered us up.
We shall not say goodbye but "adieu" until we meet again.
The Bersano Family
My condolences to the family and friends of huell Howser. We just lost our beloved mother three weeks ago and now it feels like we lost another close relative. He was loved by many friends. RIP dear Huell we miss you already. May almighty God surround your family with peace and love.
Thanks so much for all the wonderful stories you brought to us. You helped us know our golden state better and brought a lot of fun into our lives.
I'm so sorry we never got to meet you. But when we moved here in 1981, we pretty soon found your show and what a show it was. We toured many of the places you showed us. Oh my gosh, we will miss you so much. You were one of a kind. The Murdocks
I'm depply sad about his passing. I love to watch him on Saturday nights on kcsm in northren california. I looked forward to Saturday nights. I don't think they can find another huell howser. He was wonderful to watch. I will greatly miss him.
You were "one of a kind"
I just loved your Calif
Gold shows.. God Bless
Thank you so much...
I feel as though I have lost a family member. Huell will be dearly missed. I so loved watching California Gold. One episode was about Dairyville. It was fun to see the area my grandparents called home from the 1950's through the 1980's. My prayers and loving thoughts go out to Huell's family. God bless you.
What a loss we have all suffered with Huell Howser's passing. He was so amazing to watch...he was like a sponge that soaked up every little bit of knowledge that he could. And how lucky we were to have him speak of our own California that we live in. He was so humble, so eager to learn and made watching so entertaining as well as learning history in California. You will sorely be missed. Thank God for reruns so that we may always see you on our TV. I know you are up there showing everyone Heaven's Gold and teaching a whole new crowd new lessons. Angels around you always and rest in peace dear Huell. You made so many people happy every week you were on TV. Thank you for sharing yourself.
Huell was the genuine article. I will miss his, "Well...will you look at this!" or "Hey Louie...get a picture of that!" but mostly his "Thats AMAZING!" with that charming southern drawl of his. There was a beautiful sunset here in California last night. It made me think of Huell and all the beautiful places he took us to. RIP dear Huell. I dont doubt you are delighting the angels in heaven pointing out vistas they didnt know about.
You did good in so many ways. You brought attention to areas such as homelessness and conservation of the natural environment.I think you conserved a bit of all of us. Jim Alford Arvin, Ca.
The same day Huell died we had a conversation about him with our daughter about how much we all enjoyed "California Gold" and his friendly, enthusiastic personality. How sad that someone who appeared so healthy and vigorous should have their life cut short. He did leave a wonderful legacy for us to enjoy. "Amazing!!!" Thanks Huell
My wife and I enjoyed Huell's programs for 12 years before we move out of state. One of the things we missed most was Huell and were pleased to see him again when we returned to Ca one year ago. We were deeply saddened by the news of his death; his warm, inviting personality made him seem like family.
Never met Huell but certainly felt like I knew him after watching his show over the years. What a refreshing program he hosted with class and folksy friendliness. It took a Tennesseeman to point out to Californians what they were missing in their own state. I will miss his new adventures but am sure he will live on in reruns for years to come.
Huell Howser gone? It can't be true! I have traveled with him via my TV all over California. This is sad news.
Thanks for the memories...
Thanks for the great stories you did in Tennessee before going to CA. I remember finding your California Gold one Sunday afternoon, enjoyed learning about your new state. You will be missed. S B Greene, TN
Huell made me want to visit so many places in California that I might never have known about. This past summer we detoured off the highway to visit the Sundial Bridge in Redding. He will be terribly missed, but he left a legacy for all of us who love California.
No matter how hard the week was, no matter what the world was throwing at me, I knew that each Sunday afternoon I could sit down with an old friend and be amazed at the incredible stories of an incredible state. May we all look at California through the eyes of Huell and see the amazing miracle that it is.
Thank you, Huell.
so sad to see such a wonderful treasure leave us. thanx for giving us our state.
new program coming soon: "HUELL'S HEAVEN: THE GOLDEN TOUR." hope they've got a camera waiting for you. RIP. :-(
Around 1997, I was tending bar aboard the historic Delta King riverboat in Old Sacramento. Suddenly, the small cocktail lounge seemed filled to capacity as the very large and imposing presence of Huell Howser filled the room. I had not heard of him or seen his show at the time, but it was clear from his body language and charisma that he was definitely someone of weight. He started asking all sorts of questions -- about the boat's history, its appointments, its owners -- and he was particularly struck by the beautiful stained glass window artwork that circled the lounge. The scenes depicted all the geography of California as seen from the boat's decks as it would make its way from San Francisco to Sacramento. Huell started exclaiming what I would later discover to be vintage Howserisms -- "This is just amazing! Look at the details in the paintings! Do you mean to tell me this artist did all this while the boat was transporting people along the Delta?" For 15 years following that encounter, I have been a loyal viewer of Huell's shows. A proud, native Californian myself, I really deepened my love of the State and my appreciation of all her many bounteous attributes because I saw them anew through the lens of Howser's enthusiasm. I always joked to friends that his boyish naivete made him seem like a Mr. Rogers for adults, and I think that was a good thing. He looked at things with an unprejudiced, joyous eye, and he made us all respect and truly cherish all that this glorious state has to offer. As a 25-year journalist, I can say that I benefited greatly from Howser's fresh and happy approach to life. Always curious, respectful, probing and jubilant -- not bad qualities to instill in the heart of aspiring journalists everywhere. I think Huell Howser made an indelible, colorful master stroke on the canvas of California history, and I think Californians of all ages will benefit from his contributions.
I walk in my mothers room more than 20 years ago as she watched a hyper , cheerful and enthusiastic man talking about places in my state "CALIFORNIA" . Between the rap music and gangs in my city I knew I could escape to the Cosby show and Huell Howser's show , what a pair. Thank U KCET and a special thanks to the Howser family for sharing Huell with the hood .
I can just see Huell when he gets to Heaven saying "Isn't this just the most Amazing thing you've Every Seen?" We'll miss him. He helped us CA transplants to Nashville stay in tune with our true selves.
Going to miss you Huell..........
You were California's Gold! Thank you for all your trips you took all of us on. Your sincereity and class came through the screen on how you interviewed and treated every single person. You will be so missed...

Huell took us on many an armchair vacation. A-m-a-z-i-n-g is our favorite adjective when we travel. Our grandkids know all the lyrics to "California Here I Come" his theme song. He will be greatly missed.
I do not know what I will do without Huell! I will miss him dearly. Rest in Peace.
We have been fans of Huell Howser for 20 years, Thank you so much for all you've shown us. California is a little less golden now.

Always happy and enthusiastic. A role model, if ever there was.
Having grown up in Southern California from 1956 on, I remember seeing another show like Huells' called "The Happy Wanderers" which ran in the 1960s, well sure enough, Huell spent a day with those folks from that show and it was wonderful to see both of these "Pioneers of Travel in the West" together talking about all the fun places to see. I tried to visit each and every place Huell told us about. We're deeply saddened to hear of his passing at such a young age, but God must need him more to help guide others in Heaven, Thank you Dear Sir, for everything you shared.
We loved and will miss you terribly Huell. God bless and rest in heavenly peace. Michael Harris and Glenn Ayala

His style and enthusiasum was second to none. He appeared passionate about everything he reported on. Although the series will like continue to be visible for us all to enjoy, we will miss the man who made it possible. One of a kind, for sure!
I was stunned to hear Huell Howser is gone. I watched his program for at least the last 10 years. I am a native Californian and didn't even know of some of the great places he ventured to. He will be missed. R.I.P. Huell
Huell, you where truly a wonderful person. The state of california surly will'nt be the same without you. You will be missed, RIP Huell.
Watching his shows way back in the 1980's was California pride, you could go places without going to them. It was an amazing show and Huell did it so well. Everyplace he visited he left a mark of beauty. The Redwood Trees, almost finding the California border to Oregon, Poppies in the Desert. Los Angeles places that are no more. May he find his way on the Waves of the California Beach and God will open up those Golden Gates for the best person ever.
He will live on in his T.V. Shows and Videos and that is his gift to us.
Gods Speed Mr. California Gold
A part of our evening! We will miss this extraordinary man. He covered so many California places of interest.

My entire family always took the time to view Huell's works. He left us a true documented legacy of this beautiful state and other topics too. Thankfully all of these treasures are still with us and will constantly remind us of that very friendly and very observant Tennessean who shared with us so wonderfully. Thank you to Huell Howser for showing us where to find California's Gold.
For many years Huell Howser have shown us where to find California's Gold. He had traveled to many different places in California. He visited so many cities, towns, communities and neighborhoods. We watched him visit bakeries, restaurants, farms, campgrounds, schools and many of the businesses in the State. At the end of his espisodes, he had demostrated that California's Gold are the people. Everyone is California's Gold. Everything that you do and create for someone's enjoyment is California's Gold. You enrich the California by giving someone something to enjoy with pride.

What a great loss for California. As a native Angeleno now living in NYC, I was fortunate enough to have explored a lot of the nook and crannies of that great state. He made what on the surface looked benign, interesting. And he was able to see the beauty in things many of just glance over. A great loss for the great state!

Huell, my family loved your TV program and being your Snowbird neighbours in Palm Springs. Norma Smith, Roseville, CA
My very favorite show host. I loved every single show he hosted. I got to know California through his eyes. We will miss him very much in our home.
Thank you Mr Howser.
I am saddened by the sudden passing of a great director,
producer, commentator and person. HUELL HOWSER was
a master at his trade. No one spoke as eloquent as he.
I recall a few years back when he did a story in Tiburon
on the history of the U.S NAVEL NET AND BOOM DEPOT.
the Navy base was used to lay submarine nets during WW ll
along the Pacific Coast , What made it more interesting
was that I was living on the base during these years. What
a great job he and his staff did digging up so much of the
history on this place. Huell has helped so many kids in our
schools learn about the History of California.
I believe that I have seen everyone of his videos on some
of the most interesting places in this State, Without HUELL
myself and millions of other people would have missed out
on much of California's little known history. God bless you
Huell for everything you have contributed to the education
of the people of this state. My thoughts and prayers go out
to the friends and family of Huell Howser. God bless you
Sir for a job well done.
'A LIFE THAT TOUCHES THE HEART OF OTHERS GOES

So sorry to read of Mr. Howser's passing. Was very glad to find that he was a fan of my dear "old friend" Geoff Agisim, the San Pedro Sea Shanty musician/singer who passed on 10/11/12.
Huell you inspired me to hit the road and look just look at the gold in California. May I continue in your honor. Bless you and all your loved ones.
From Videolog to California's Gold and many more, Huell Howser opened our eyes to wonders large and small across the state. “California Here I Come” is more than a state (and Huell's) iconic theme song, it IS the spirit of adventure, discovery, beauty of nature, and meeting of amazing new friends. Huell helped us to seek out and never miss the extraordinary disguised as the ordinary – crocheted artistry from recycled string; an endearing reunion of an aging elephant and her caregiver; Welsh singers in a mine; donuts and hot dogs; an urban garden of quivering lotus blossoms . . . .
Huell, you were amazing! You will be missed but the treasures of our state you shared will live on .
God bless you Huell. Your positive spirit will live on forever. You made me smile and feel good when I watched your show, it was like a vacation from the darker side of life. You were uplifting and your enthusiasm was contagious. You will certainly be missed.
R.I.P. Huell. Thank you for bringing to light so many hidden jewels of California.

What a very sad day. Huell not only did we love your show but you allowed many seniors who weren't able to leave their homes continue to travel via your wonderful show. We got to enjoy your wonderful California spots. We had so many more years to enjoy with you. Rip and bless you for your work and your enthusiasm for our great state now go "wow" them in heaven!
As a second-generation "native Californian", I've followed in the footsteps of my dad in appreciating the unique way Huell Howser told OUR story. RIP, Huell. I, and my fellow Angelenos, will miss you.
such a showman. got his tart in Nshville. RIP Bro!
Loved his shows. He will be greatly missed...
I never got to meet Huell in person, but in a way I did. His charm and grace pulled you in with every one of the places he took us to in the comfort of our own living rooms. He had the wide eyed wonder of a child and was genuinely amazed at finding all the little nooks and crannies of California. I was born here and never knew about the majority of places had he not shown us. It was therefore with shock and disbelief when I heard today that he had passed on sunday. There are a few times in ones life when you remember where you were when something somber and tragic happens. The one that stands out in my mind is the passing of President Kennedy. But along side his memory is one of a sweet country boy from Tennessee who made me proud to be an American and proud to be a Californian.
I just saw Huell singing "California Here I Come," an excerpt of which is "Open up that Golden Gate." Well...I dont doubt he is singing in heaven with the verse "Open Up Those Pearly Gates!." with that terrific smile and genuine heart felt enthusiasm that was so pure and true. Thank you Huell...for brightening up my world and the worlds of so many. Heaven is a bit brighter because you are there. Rest In Peace...you were our true California Gold.
A life well lived passes well loved.
Thank you, Huell.

Many an evening was spent enjoying this show! I always wondered if we were the only ones watching as it was a bit off the beaten TV path; but many friends have also commented how beloved this show was in their homes. Huell had such a sweet way with the people he interviewed and brought a lot of us a lot closer to the obscure elements of California history (or made us remember those childhood vacations in the Golden State!). May he rest in peace and may his show enjoy endless reruns. We will miss him so!

Wow,sad news....I watched his specials in school and as an adult at home with my family, they were always informative and entertaining. RIP Mr.Howser you will always be part of our California Gold!
I am a California native now living in Seattle, WA. and the three things I have always missed about my home state... Dodger Stadium, Morro Bay and watching Huell every week. My heart aches for your family and friends.
I became a fan of Huell when I lived in Texas and worked for a company that did post-production for some of his public television shows. Huell was like a little bit of home to this Kentucky girl transplanted to Dallas; I grew up in a town not far from Gallatin, and the accent and cadence of his speech reminded me of those of cheerful uncles and grandpas. His enthusiasm for the joys to be found in unusual places was unmatched. I will have a peanut butter and chocolate donut from Stan's at some point in my life to celebrate the joie de vivre of a fellow Tuckaseean living far from home.
Thanks for showing us around California, you were truely a tour guide, showing many people many places. I'm sure you made friends where ever you went to film a show. you are truely a big part of Californias Gold.
May you rest in Peace.

You brought a sense of new wonderment to a lot of places I had been in California and of enthusiastic wonder to the places I want to see. My heartfelt condolences to your family. Huell has been a part of our lives for as long as we can remember. He did exactly as stated above...he helped us see the magic in our normal every day lives. "Oh my gosh" never sounded so genuine. I would be excited to see what new place Huell would be visiting. My husband and I have actually gone to some of those places. We will miss our tour guide.
My prayers be with his relatives. He was a great personality of American TV.
We will miss your visits to the Palm Springs Air Museum. You were a good friend to all of us docents.

Thank you, Huell for teaching us about all the amazing places in California. Rest Well and Peace,
Huell could get excited about the most simple of things with a great energy. I admired his enthausium, something that is missing in today's world and it would certainly be very hard to replace him.
Oh My Gosh.. I am going to Miss you Huell! I loved your shows about California so much. I even ran out to Stan's donuts one night after the show.. I was convinced I needed to revisit a donut shop once I knew more about it. I guess you would have wanted it this was.. leaving so soon after retiring. Surely heaven holds a place for such a splendid man.
To those who loved Huell,
You were a breath of fresh air when you came to Nashville, though some of your coworkers did not understand. You opened many a story with the same excitement and fresh wonder that you continued to bring to television on the west coast. You were an inspiration to all of us who had a career telling travel stories. Thanks, Huell, for everything. You will be missed by so many!
I am really going to grieve for Huell Howser a lot. I loved his shows and his sense of humor.
Love California Gold.....even showed the house I lived in as a kid once in Scotia, lots of memories came back with that show. Superior Dairy in Hanford was great also...Huell seemed very down home and genuine....
I will miss him. Huell came in to our home almost weekly for many years. He was like a welcome friend. With his Southern charm and style he made every visit to somewhere in California seem special and we knew we just had to visit all those out of the way places he found. RIP my dear friend xoxo

Godspeed my friend.
I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Please find peace and comfort in Psalms 65:2.
A cheerful, warm and informed person who truly loved his job. May God have his mansion made from
My husband and I fell in love with your show when we moved to Los Angeles in 1999. Your enthusiasm was contagious, and we couldn't wait to visit in person the hidden gems you featured on "California's Gold." You were as charming in person, as my friend Gabby and I discovered when we met you at the 2004 Tofu Festival in downtown LA. When we moved to Chicago in 2005, I wasn't sad to leave behind the sunny California weather but I was sad to no longer have Huell Howser and "California's Gold."
To my children, you will always be the Backson (oh what a delight you are in Winnie the Pooh!). But to me and my husband, you'll always be synonymous with the Golden State. You will be missed.
I remember watching California's Gold and Mr. Howser while visiting my parents home here in Hemet. Then we moved here to live and rarely missed watching his show. He was a jewel in our crown and God Bless him.
Huell you were truly California's Gold! California is a better place because of you and will not be the same without you. You were an inspiration to all will be truly missed... Rest in Peace, Huell... Rest in Peace!
We have enjoyed his tours of California for many years, his friendly, jovial nature. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace.
