James Gammon was among the greatest character actors I have ever seen. I always looked forward to seeing him act whenever possible. He had a great range; he was just as good playing a comedic role as he was portraying a villain. He was a superb talent! I am so saddened by this news. May your beautiful family memories help assuage your sorrow.

I was lucky enough to attend a performance of "The Late Henry Moss" in San Francisco back in 2000. My main reason for being there was to see James Gammon live on stage. What a great actor. I thoroughly enjoyed him on "Nash Bridges" over the years. He had the attributes that make a good actor GREAT: talent, dedication, humility, and longevity. He will be sorely missed. I'll never forget witnessing one of my favorite actors in a brand-new play by my all-time favorite playwright. God Bless. -- from Asheville, North Carolina

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

When I am dead, my dearest

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

My condolences to the family. He was a great character actor. I'll never forget his very dry delivery in Major League when asked if he'd like to manage the Cleveland Indians...on the phone: "I don't know, got a man I'm selling some tires to." He will be missed.

wow... so sorry for the lost. rip...
July 19, 2010
The best line I ever heard James Gammon deliver was in Silverado. "Mind, do I mind! You lead a posse to my best hideout as ask me do I mind."

I remember him best for the relationship his character shared with Nash Bridges (Don Johnson). It made me think of my parents who died in 2008 eight months apart.

My sympathy and condolences to his family. Like my parents, I won't forget him, and the laughter he brought to his many role.

July 19, 2010
He never made a movie I did not enjoy. He will be missed on the big screen.
July 19, 2010
The best line I remember James Gammon deliver was in the western film, Silverado. "You brought a posse to my best hide out as asked me if I mind!"

I remember him most for his role in Nash Bridges. I didn't watched the show much when it aired on prime-time TV during the late 1990's, early 2000's. However, in recent years, I watched "reruns" religiously. The relationship between Gammon and Johnson's characters touched me greatly. Perhaps because Gammon's character (the father) and Johnson's (the son) were very close. Like Gammon's character on the show, my mother was dying of Alzheimer's disease and my father die only eight months after her in 2008. I'd watch the show and the interaction between and remember both my parents with fondness, wishing I could see them again. I received great comfort from watching the interactions between Gammon and Johnson. It always lift my spirits and made me think of my dad, reflecting on my life with him.

Of course, I know he was an actor playing a role, but of all the bad guys, western sidekicks, and villains he played in the past, I will remember him as I saw him on Nash Bridges. A good man who loved his son Nash and Nash love him, while watching him slip away.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to Mr. Gammon's family

"Why not start a forest fire?"

That starkly hilarious line, dealt with signature dead-on deadpan delivery to a stunned cadre of power brokers in Robert Redford’s delightful 1988 comedy “The Milagro Beanfield War”, forever etched in my mind and memory the formidable presence and talent that was Jim Gammon. He had the uncanny yet reliable knack of shaping and polishing every piece of work he was involved in, no matter the size of the role.

With his gravelly voice, craggy face, and beady eyes, Gammon seemed most at-home in the saddle, from his early days doing TV westerns when they were still in vogue to Ed Harris’ 2008 “Appaloosa” – ridin’ high and shootin’ straight.

It’s vivid image and it’s ours to relish forever. God speed.

It's sad to lose another wonderful actor. He was such a joy to watch. Watching him made me feel good. Too many actors get work because they look good and James wasn't the prettiest guy on the block. But he had a long career because he was one damn fine actor.
