Jeff understood racing and he understood people. I sure miss going to the drags and talking to Jeff in suite 516. I attended every year from 1999 - 2011 and always looked forward to seeing everyone at Bristol. As Jeff would always say: " same time next year." What a guy. I really miss him.
The finest human being I have ever met!
Last night I made a list of people I had not talked to for a long time and wanted to reach out to them and Jeff was on that list. I can't tell you how shocked I was to learn that Jeff had passed today.
I was blessed to have associated with Jeff over the years when he was with RJR and I have fond memories of our times together. There is an empty feeling in me heart today. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
My deepest condolences. May your memories bring you a measure of comfort at this time of great sorrow. And may you continue to gain strength and peace from the promises found in God"s Word the Bible. (Daniel 12:2)
Thoughts and prayers go out to the Byrd family.
Jeff was the joy and spirit of BMS. I had the pleasure of meeting him and Claudia and Claudia's wonderful parents while working with the Children Charities, Eastman Motorsports Club auctions. They were a family that were very close, but their arms were also open for someone else to join in their family, including each and every race fan. BMS will never be the same without Jeff. I always looked forward to his letters in the BMS magazine that was sent out to ticket holders. He always wanted the "FANS" to have the best experience of their life while at BMS, and to make sure that happened, he even included his cell phone in the letters in case you had a need while visiting BMS. He was dedicated to his family and to his job. Jeff will be greatly missed by his family, and by his BMS race fan family. May God comfort Claudia and his entire family during this terrible loss.
I was saddened to hear Jeff had passed away. He was a smart and funny man and a great friend who helped me get a job with RJR when my life was a struggle and I really needed it. It has been years since I saw him, but it always did my heart good to hear what he had accomplished. Jeff is a guy you never replace. You just hope you can work a little of his magic back into the world a live each day a little richer for knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with Claudia and the whole family. God Bless.
Thank you Mr. Byrd for making Bristol what it is today. Thank you to the Byrd family for sharing your husband, father, with us. So very sorry for your loss---he was and is a great man!
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
During the fall of 2002, Jeff Byrd graciously invited Sullivan East High School to hold classes at the speedway. We will forever be grateful for everything he did for us during our time at the track. It was obvious that he truly cared about the students. Our community has lost one of its finest.
I knew Jeff since he became a part of the NHRA family and he became a really good friend to both my late husband Bob and myself. I have thought about him so much and kept him in my prayers during his illness. He will be missed by lots and lots of drag racing people.
My condolences go out to his family.
He is now in God's hands and out of all of his pain and suffering. God Bless. Eileen Daniels, NHRA
He was a person no one will forget
May God bless you and your family. My prayers and deepest condolences are with you. Shall the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. Shall your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together that bring you comfort as you celebrate a life well lived. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
God does have a plan...It's just kind of hard to read the blueprints through the tears sometimes. Our loved ones that are gone on to Heaven are in the LORD’s hand now and we will hold them close within our hearts. They will always be alive in our hearts and there they will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again. Time may pass and fade away, but memories of them will always stay. Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal....... Love leaves a memory no one can steal. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a wonderful treasure. Their life here on earth was a blessing, they are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
I thought you might enjoy this poem:
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there are no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you that entire God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

For 20 years I took picturesof pre race cermonies. my most memorable experience was one time things got a little behind schedule, Jeff got on stage and directed his people to rush all of us off track, his last words of instructions were"but be nice to them." This was Jeff Byrd. He will be missed. Jerry Greene
He's not really lost to you for he's only gone away. He will be there at the dawning of a brighter, future day. He is just away. But he will always be a part of all the Wonderful memories that will live forever in your heart. May knowing that others care be a comfort to you at this difficult time. May God keep you safe in his loving arms.
This NASCAR and Bristol Motor Speeway fans family are saddened by the new of the loss of Jeff Byrd. To the Byrd family and all of NASCAR and Bristol Motor Speedway family, we hold you in our prayers and thoughts. (Booker/Ford/Palmer Family in Florida/OK)
A few years ago, a collection of combat airman from the Vietnam "conflict" gathered in Bristol to reminisce and fellowship. Among the activities planned by Paul Spangler was a visit to Bristol Speedway for a day of racing courtesy of Jeff. We enjoyed that day and the generous hospitality of Jeff's skybox and service. Jeff acknowledged our presence and honored our service with recognition at the track. Hospitality marks one measure of a good person's character. Jeff clearly had that one well set and, by comments here, he had a full measure of other highly admirable character traits. Thanks again, Jeff, and deepest condolences to those who loved and knew him and enjoyed his vigorous living. If there's not been any rubber burning or fuel stinging nostrils in heaven during the joy of great motor racing, I'm betting a new project is freshly under way. God bless Jeff and all who grieve the ending of a very well lived life.
Thanks for all you've done for Bristol and the dragstrip. We will keep the Byrd family in our thoughts and prayers.
Dear Claudia and family, I am so sorry for your loss of Jeff. I know he is greatly missed and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
Such a wonderful person with many memories of the whole family and BMS family. I had dealt with Jeff many times when I did Non-Profitt fundraisers for the Crumley House for the Traumatic Brain Injured. And he always gave from his heart. A truley dedicated man to this area. And his wife just follows in his footsteps. God Bless to all of you and the BMS employees for the loss of a most wonderful boss and friend. Jeff, you will be greatly missed.

What can I say but how much we are all going to miss Jeff. We've been through it ourselves and you all were there to support us so many years ago. I remember many good times between the two families at Rockingham, the Preview, and many others up in WS. Please know my thoughts are with you all. Always,
I met Jeff back in the RJR days he was a unique person, he would always come in the tower at the races and have a smile on his face.He never had a harsh word to say to anyone. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as the racing family.
My thoughts and prayers to the family
just a race fan that held season tickets to Bristol for 8 years. The last race that I attended was Jeff's last race at Bristol- I LOVED his opening speaches before the races! I looked forward to them....he was BRISTOL! As much as the high banks, the beating and banging, the sparks on a Saturday night; Jeff Byrd personified Bristol and it will NEVER be the same again. RIP Friend!
My deepest heartfelt condolences on the loss of our Jeff Byrd..Working with Jeff for over 40 years is a TREASURE..Best P.R. person I loved like a brother.GOD SPEED at the SPEEDWAY in the sky..RACING HAS ANOTHER ANGEL...LINDA VAUGHN
Claudia, what a loss. We knew Jeff through the Children's Charities, but he was so kind and thoughtful. He will be greatly missed by all of us. We cannot be with you for the funeral because of a conflict, but we will see you very soon. Our prayers are with you.
I remember Jeff from our senior men's basketball league. I can sill hear him saying Bobby you need to slow down so we can catch up with you. We will all miss him. May God bless you and your family.
One yr when my parking passes were late i had called the BMS # after business hrs. I pushed enough buttons to get to the empoyee phone directory. When Jeff's # came up i pressed it. ( what the heck )To my surprise i was greeted with a quick hello. i explained my concern, he commented that it was to late for mail to reach ontario canada. I asked how he new i was from canada, he replied how do you know i'm from north carolina. I explained to him that i did not have a accent he did. When he quit laughing he passed me through to the person in charge voice mail. He explained he needed to go as he had a fundraiser to attend, apologized for cutting me short. Two more times over the yrs i called his # just to chew the fat. He gave me a few minutes of his time, listened to my concerns, and remebered who i was. This is not that hard as my 9 yr old daughter is named Bristol. Please accept my familys prayers at your time of sorrow. Jim Janet Bristol Blackstock
Gone yet not forgotten,
although you are apart,
his spirit lives within you,
forever in your heart.
Until you meet again, may God
Hold you in the palm of his hand.
Jeff, you will be missed by everyone at the track. When we needed help, you were there for us.
To the Byrd Family:
One of my fondest memories when racing my own Funny Car operation during the Winston era...was Jeff Byrd's exhuberant "guest tour" invasions of our pit area. No matter your stature (rich or poor), Jeff knew NO bounderies for his being personable, caring and just plain FUN to be around! With his always bringing BIG grins and joy to everyone around...there's no doubt the Byrd Family has a lifetime of joyous, loving and grinning memories to look back on. My Prayer's for your healing and celebrating his blessed Soul,
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
TO CLAUDIA BYRD AND FAMILY
MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY DURING THIS TIME IN YOUR LIVES. MAY GOD GIVE YOU STRENGTH AND PEACE IN THE COMING DAYS.
Dynamic and friendly are words that will always remind me of Jeff. He was a wonderful leader and I thought so much of Jeff's family. He lead the way for me to receive an award while I worked with him at RJR/SME. I will never forget his enthusiam and encouraging ways. We had some great fun as an SME family playing softball, going bowling at lunch, and doing fun things. Jeff was the one who usually got it all together. Bye Jeff and thanks for all the great times! God bless all your family and friends as they deal with the loss.
Both the Byrd family and BMS are in our thoughts and prayers. May God give you strength and peace in the moments ahead without him.
The Byrd & BMS family are in our prayers. May God give you strength and peace as you struggle through the moments without him.
From the few short years I knew Jeff what impressed me most was his ability to connect with people. If he met you once, he knew your name forever. He was very engaging, very friendly, and he seemed loved by everyone who worked with him at BMS. That speaks volumes about the kind of person Jeff was. I know he will be missed by his friends, co-workers, and family. The city of Bristol will miss his great mind for business, he contributions to our community were numerous, and at many times unspoken.
I have missed him during my visits to BMS and glad I had the opportunity to talk to him the last time I was there. Jeff, God bless, and make your track in heaven as exciting as the one you made in Bristol!
JEFF WAS A GREAT LEADER IN OUR RACING COMMUNITY. HE KNEW KNOW STRANGER, ALWAYS READY TO LEND A HAND. WORDS CANT MEASURE HIS KINDNESS, IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE WORKED FOR HIM. JEFF WILL BE TRUELY MISSED! OUR LOVE AND PRAYERS TO CHRISTIAN AND HIS FAMILY.
Words cannot express the sadness I feel in my heart at the loss of Jeff. He was a wonderful, kind Christian man who will be missed by so many people. I had the privelge of working with Jeff at RJR in the Sports Marketing Department. He was one of the first ones to interview me for the position. He made what is usually a somewhat stressful situation much more comfortable, and I got the job!
To Claudia, Belton and Christian and their families, please know you are in my prayers. May our merciful Lord and Savior wrap His loving arms around you in comfort. I lost my father just a little over a year ago and know all too well the grief you are feeling. I pray that you will receive peace and joy in the wonderful memories that are etched in your hearts and minds. I smile when I think of J Byrd, T Wayne and Ralph Seagraves up there in Heaven teaching God all about the wonderful world of racing. Who knows I bet he gave HIM an all access pit pass!
Love and Prayers,
My thoughts and prayers are withthe Byrd Family in their time of grief. At times like these, "God is near to those that are broken at heart; And those crushed in spirit he saves. (Psalm 34:18) I hope this will bring the family a measure of comfort.
Claudia, you are in my families prayers. Jeff will be missed by friends and family alike. Being one of Grandma Reba's "adopted" ones, I got to be both. Jeff told me he always had time for me, especially when it came to advise. "He told me that bigger isn't always better, it is the genuine enthusiasm and excitement you give back that makes a great place for fans." The thing was, he knew how to be big, ethusisastic and exciting...and his impact on others will go on forever. ThanX Jeff, you will be missed!!!
We enjoyed our partnership with Jeff Byrd who was a true friend of this Police Department and will always be missed by all of us. God Bless Jeff's family and the employees of BMS.
To the Byrd family: Please accept our sincere condolences. From the Board of Directors - Santa Pal, Inc.
Dear Claudia and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about Jeff. May it bring comfort to you to know his love will always live in your hearts and you will see him again one day.
Because Christ Lives!
Love, Prayers, and Deepest Sympathy
To the Family and Friends of Mr. Jeff Byrd.
I send my condolences to you. May you find the strength to endure such a great loss and have comfort in knowing that our God is the "God of comfort and He comfort all those who are mourning." Isaiah 61:2. Throw your burden on Him and He will substain you.
May God continue to give you the strength today and in the days ahead. Although we had never met Mr. Byrd or Mrs. Byrd we could see a couple that loved one another deeply and had the love and compassion to help those in need. We saw a man whom loved the racing world and his passion to make it enjoyable for all the fans. He will greatly be missed but the work that he did here on earth will be greatly remembered.
We will continue to pray for Mr. Byrd's family and friends.
May God give you peace during this time of loss. Thank you for being such a blessing to so many in the community. Our family will continue to pray for you and the family.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you, Belton and Jerry, Christian and Amy and all of the grandchildren.
Love from the heart,
Johnny and Tinky Drane
My thoughts go out to the Byrd family. It's not easy losing a loved one, but God will comfort you when you most need it. Jeff was a great leader, not only of BMS, but also of the community. Whoever is chosen to become the next leader of BMS will have some mighty big shoes to fill. My thanks to Claudia for the fine work that you have also done to make the area around BMS a better place to live and visit. Long live the memories of Jeff Byrd!
I met Jeff thru a good friend Eddie Parker, who he worked with at RJR, and I once stopped by his office on a race weekend and gave him a few pictures I had taken of Dale Earnhardt to hang in is office. He loved my pictures and had his secretary give me a couple complimentary tickets to the races that weekend. I will never forget how he treated me like family that day. I will miss him alot. RIP Jeff.
Jeff had the ability to make everyone he met seem like his best friend. That is what all of the members of our team seemed to say about him. We will miss him and so will the entire region. He was truly a "one of a kind" and a gentleman in everyway. Our hearts go out to Claudia and the entire family, including the BMS family. We are all better for knowing Mr Jeff Byrd. Mitch Walters and The Friendship Family of Dealerships
Barry and I just learned of Jeff's passing. We moved to Florida in July...Claudia we are so sorry...he was a wonderful man with an incredibly beautiful heart and always ready to help...I remember one time getting things together for the ACS Cattle Baron's Ball...I needed a truck and ice for the ball and called Jeff to see if he could help, without hesitation he said, a truck and ice will be waiting for you here...Barry immediately went to the track and picked up the truck, he saved the day! Just one little story of the many stories...He will be missed by all...we are so sorry...our hearts wrap around you...carol & barry serber
He was a great man and will sure be missed !!! All our love, prayers and thoughts are with the family at this time. Carol Miller(elizabethton, Tenn
I have know Jeff ever since I was a little kid hanging around the races. All the years in and around racing and cars Jeff always had time for me. This all started through friends and the fact he liked Steeler football way back when or at least he made us northerners believe he did. Though I had not seen Jeff in sometime we would stay in touch and he always would be concerned how the family was doing. Soeone I will always think of as a freind. Claudia and the kids are just as great and they are peas in a pod. Stay strong and know that Jeff is loved by many.
God speed my friend
my thoughts and prayers go out to the byrd family god bless.
Claudia, I pray that very soon your broken heart will be filled with many happy and loving memories of wonderful times with Jeff and your family. All loss leaves a gaping hole in the lives of those loved ones left behind, When really special men (like Jeff and Cary) die so young, it just seems to leave a giant crater. Please know that you and all of your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers as you have been every day for these last months.
Know that I KNOW and I care. Call on me if ther is anything I can do...please.
Love Paula Taylor
he will be missed by all...

We are all blessed with this gift of life, but Jeff took that gift to a whole new level and made an impact on many of us that he probably never fully realized. No doubt he has now heard those wonderful words, "Well Done!" To all the family, we are praying for comfort, strength and peace as you go through each day. We are incredibly blessed to have known this man. Sherrie Rountree (First TN Bank - Kingsport)

Jeff Byrd's positive influence on every aspect of motorsports he touched goes far beyond BMS. A true gentleman and a great friend to so very many people, Jeff was the kind of person the rest of us would like to be.
I was not fortunate to know Mr. Byrd and his family. I did know who he was if I heard his name mentioned, but I must admit that during the trbute in this morrnings news with Josh I cried when we were all told of the many, many things he and his family had done for children. What a great man he was. How generous and caring for the areas children. No doubt those who knew him were made better by knowing him. He made the world a better place. My deepest, truest sympathy goes out to all that knew him and espescially to his family. Heaven is surely a better place with Mr. Byrd and no doubt he is watching over children there. P. Reese, Jonesborough, TN.
Claudia, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Our family was deeply saddened by the news of Jeff Byrd's passing. Jeff was a friend of Nascar, Drag Racing and our family. I remember a few years back Tom Jr. calling me from Jeff's office at Bristol Motor Speedway and told me he had been visiting with Jeff for the past half hour and WHAT a nice person Jeff was. Just small talk, but our son was impressed that Jeff who was a VERY busy man, would take a few minutes to talk about drag racing with him.
I didn't know Jeff as well as my kids, I remember him well from his days at R.J. Renyolds and NHRA, but I'm lucky enough to recently meet and become friends with his son Christian Byrd, the executive director and general manager of zMAX Dragway. I have ALWAYS said: "Children ARE nothing but a reflection of their parents" so judging from the nice young man Christian is, Jeff MUST of been one FINE person!
Jeff will be deeply missed by all of racing and this family.
Tommy Johnson Sr. & family
My deepest sympathy to the Byrd family, friends and employees of BMS. Mr. Byrd will surely be missed by all of NASCAR, including the Fans.
Our hearts are breaking for your family. May God's comfort, peace and strength sustain you each moment. We will continue to remember you in our thoughts and prayers and cherish the memories of our Loch Drive friendship.
With deepest sympathy,
Danny and Cathy Hayes

Jeff was truly a people person. We felt he was our friend from the moment we met him. Once he met you he didn't forget you. We happened into a deli in 2009...hadn't seen him in a couple years, and he was the first to speak to us and continue on as if we were continuing our previous conversations. He was such a part of the Bristol Experience. We will truly miss him. Jack & Janet McQueeney, (Skaneateles, NY)

When I worked for Kenny Bernstein in 1984, we used to visit the Byrds at their house in Winston-Salem, NC. Both Jeff and Claudia were extremely gracious hosts, and they made me feel like one of their family. Besides his many career milestones, Jeff was a bigger success as a human being.
THOUGTH'S AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE BYRD FAMILY.JFFF YOU WILL BE MISSED
Please accept our warmest sympathies and be comforted knowing that God is “near to those that are broken at heart, and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34: 18).

Dear Claudia, Christian, Belton and families- We're so sorry for your loss. We know what you're going through-just know that time, memories, friends and your faith will see you through. There is comfort knowing Jeff is in a better place, where we'll all meet again. Just think he, Betty(BT),Wayne and Ralph are together again. Our love and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
Even though I didn't know Jeff on a personal level, he always remembered myself and my husband. If you passed him anywhere on the premises of BMS he would at least wave at you no matter how busy he was. When he did have time to talk, he would listen, laugh and always made you feel like you were a part of the BMS family. Larry Carrier told me once, (and when he told you once, he meant once, in a great way of course), "Make everyone on this property feel like they are an invited guest to your home". Jeff carried his legacy on. Claudia, the children and the BMS family will be in my thoughts and prayers. My love to you all,
Mr Byrd, you were the GREATEST,thanks for all you done for Avoca Elem. School. We will miss you

I met Jeff through his lovely wife Claudia's effort to support our nonprofit to help abused children. I became close friends with his gorgeous daughter Belton and can not express what a great man he was. He cared about his community, always shared a smile and was a wonderful husband and father. We never had the privilege of meeting Jeff but Jeff was Bristol Motor Speedway so in a sense we had met him. He will be missed but never forgotten by many people. God bless his family and all his many employees who worked so closely with him over the years.

My dad in 1974 due to cancer it was in his sinuses...My cousin and her husband owns Clean Tec and Ricky Hammonds cleans the carpets so he got to know Mr. Byrd. Always talked about what a good man he was. Ricky has had cancer for 2 years, and finally told Jeff....he was saddened about that...and then the next thing you know Jeff was in bad shape.....it hit them pretty hard. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and close friends...He's not in pain anymore....God will take care of him...he will always be alive in your hearts....remember all the good times that ya'll shared.....no one can never take that away...I do know that in time it will be a little easier to cope with.....but we are so sorry that ya'll are having to go through this......I will keep all of ya'll in our prayers. Rhonda from Fountain inn, S.C.
A truly gifted Gentleman...Thank You for everything you did for our beloved sport of NHRA, and the many people your life touched in your charitable and community work. My sincerest condolences to his Family and Friends.
When Winston came on with the NHRA I was one of the "little" people working with the Safety Safari. Jeff was one of the "big shots" that treated us all as equals and made us feel like our part was just as big as anyone else's. I'm sure he is working the crowd in heaven now and happy to meet old friends.
God bless his family.
To Claudia and the children, I am sorry to hear of Jeff's passing. He was loved by all that that knew him, and he will be missed by all. I hope you wil remain in the tri-cities area. We met Jeff during his RJ Reynolds days and liked him instantly. He always had a funny story to tell and if he told you something, you knew it was the gospel truth. All through these last 25 or so years, he never forgot us, even though we saw him only occassionaly since we got out of racing. All our thoughts and prayers go to the family. We lost one of the good ones, in Jeff. May he always be remembered for the sincere, loving and compassionate person he was. Bob and Cookie Lego (formarly of TRC).
Jeff was one of the nicest people I ever knew! I was proud to have him call me his friend. He contributed so much to Drag Racing and the local community, he will be missed by so many people, it just brings tears to my eyes. He was so young!
I have watched many Nascar and NHRA races over the decades at Bristol on TV. Always first class. Only insight and great leadership can make a world class operation like Bristol. MY condolences to the Byrd family.
"There was only one Jeff and he leaves a tremendous gap in NASCAR as well as the state of Tennessee. He was a master with the race fan and truly listened and learned a lot from them. He was also a wonderful family man and a dear friend who I will miss tremendous. Pat and I will be there to do what we can to help his dear Claudia and his wonderful family." H.A. (Humpy) Wheeler

Simply put: nobody did it better than Jeff. He was a true friend of the sport and treated fans with great respect. I will miss him so, so much.
My son, Wesley and I are very sad to learn of Jeff's death. Jeff was a
Little League Coach for Wesley when he was 12 years old. My husband died and Jeff and Claudia took both of us under their wing
and helped us through this. Wesley and I offer our deepest sympathy
to the family. Love, Shirley and Wesley Athan
GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
I want to share a story and pay homage to one of the nicest men I have ever met and gave a most unique and once in a lifetime experience to the Life Skills students of Dobyns-Bennett High School, their peer tutors (the BUDS), their teachers and assistant, and their bus drivers.
In February of 2009, Mr. Byrd invited the Life Skills students at DB for a tour of the Bristol Motor Speedway. The Life Skills students have peer tutors called BUDS, which accompany them on their monthly field trips. That semester in school I was one of the BUDS, and we were all excited to go tour the speedway. We had no idea what to expect, because they had never done a field trip like this before, but we got so much more than ever could have dreamed of. When we arrived at the Speedway, we were informed that we were going to be given a private tour of the Speedway by Mr. Byrd himself, but his generosity did not stop there. He allowed all of the Life Skills students and BUDs to pick out any one item from the gift shop to have free of charge. The excitement of the trip didn't end there.
After the gift shop, we went out onto the speedway and were actually allowed to drive the school buses around the speed way. After, we drove around, we all climbed out of the buses and were permitted to walk all the way up the embankment of the track. How many other people can say they got to walk all the up the embankment, and saw the speed way completely void of people except for workers doing maintenance. After we all walked down, Mr. Byrd took us onto Victory Lane, where he told us about the history and some of the victors. We had group picture taken, but there was even more treats waiting for us. Mr. Byrd provided us with pizza, cookies, and drinks in the Food City sky box for lunch. We ate lunch in the Food City sky, looking out over an empty speedway. That field trip, experiencing everything I did, and seeing how happy everyone was, and how happy Mr. Byrd was at knowing he had helped in everyone's happiness, will be a memory that I will never forgot.
Rest in peace, Mr. Byrd, knowing that you will never be forgotten by a very special group of students, Life Skills and BUDS. You made not only our day, but have left a lasting impact on our lives. My sincerest condolences to Jeff's family, may you find peace in knowing that he did so much for so many people.
WONDER MAN, LOVED BY ALL..GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN..
I met Jeff five years ago at the Bristol nationwide night race. Such a truly wonderful and friendly person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
From my racing team and family, there is certainly no one that stands out in our racing world like Jeff Byrd. Jeff will be sorely missed by this city. The family are in my prayers.
I grew up with Jeff, his family and our neighborhood kids. His interest in sports developed at a very young age, probably because his dad was a sports writer for the Winston-Salem Journal. I visited him at the speedway about five years ago. He seemed very happy and comfortable in that position. He lived a great life, helped all that he could and gave his best effort in all that he did. We have all lost a great and true friend.
Our prayers are with the Bristol Motor Speedway family & Byrd family. From Erik & Thera McCord

Jeff was one of the nicest people that I have ever met in my life and I am "VERY PROUD" to call him my friend. From the very first day that I met him, he took me in and treated me like part of his family. He treated me with a lot more respect than I actually deserved. He made me feel like I was important and I really appreciate that. But that was the kind of person that he was, he treated everyone that way! He has went out of his way more times than I can count to help me out and never asked for anything in return. I will surely miss him and my heart goes out to Claudia, his children and his family. Thank you for being my friend and changing my life for the better.
I'll always be indebted to Jeff Byrd for everything he did for my family. Such a gentleman, kind & considerate, generous with no expaectation of anything in return. God bless you Claudia and all your family.

My prayers to the family of this fine man. Not a race fan myself but what Mr. Byrd and his wife have done for our communtiy with Speedway Childerns Charity will always be special. What a good man heaven received Sunday.
