To the Thomas Family,
Please be encouraged and know that God will see you through this tremendous loss. Be encouraged in knowing that Jefferson had a historic role in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School and the impact that it had on changing the South and, in many ways, the nation for the better.

With love,
Leon Stenis, another Little Rockian in Ohio, Youngstown, Ohio.

Mrs Mary and Family,

God will provide you with Peace and Comfort because He is the "Comforter." He will sustain you. "Come all who labor and are heavy burden and I will give you rest."

"God saw him getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So He wrapped His arms around him
And whispered, “Come with Me."
With tearful eyes you watched him
And saw him pass away
Although you loved him dearly,
You could not make him stay
A broken heart stopped beating
Hard working hands at rest
God broke your heart to prove to you
He only takes the best."

Stay Blessed and Remain Encouraged!

Love Always!

Sorry sorry for your loss. The Little Rock 9 are such a inspiration to me.
September 10, 2010
I would like to thank the Jefferson family as well as the other eight families for allowing your family member to make a change for the children of America. I had no idea that one of the famous nine resided in the Columbus area. I would have asked him to speak to my class when I read their story. May God bless you and heaven smile upon you.
September 09, 2010
Marilyn - I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your Mom and your family. Jefferson was such a good-hearted, intelligent man who never hesitated to share his knowledge with those of us who definitely needed it. This world was better because he was in it. I feel blessed to have known him.

I Just wanted to say that i never met you and I only read about you when I was younger. I never understood what your flight in life stood for until I educated myself and became an adult. I admire and appreciate not only you but the other eight who fought the good fight and made it possible for black women like myself to get an education. I don't take it for granted. To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. You can rest with your heavenly father now, you fought the good fight and may I say as well good and faithful servant, job well done. I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. He did pave away for African-Americans. He will truly be missed!
September 09, 2010
Your journey in this life was not to be an easy one, and if you had known what your path was to be you may have opted out however, you took the challenge. May it be stated in Heaven well done thou good and faithful servant, well done.
September 09, 2010
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Thomas's passing. I met him about 7 months ago and even had a picture taken with him. I was impressed with him and how humble he was. I enjoyed his lecture as he recalled his experience as a Little Rock Nine. He and the others have truly paved the way for all of us today. We can go into the best schools because of our character and integrity. I was moved to tears after hearing his personal accounts and thought of my two sons who are about the age he was when he integrated Central High. They can walk the halls and freely get an education without being harrassed (and if they are they can talk to someone about it and be heard). God Bless Mr. Thomas's family!
September 09, 2010
Thank you for paving the way. You will never be forgotten. The African American race has truly lost a leader. Thank God for allowing us to have you. You are truly an AMERICAN HERO.
September 09, 2010
Mary,

I am so sorry to learn of Jeffersons passing. It is hard for me to accept that the last time I saw him was when the two of you were paying your respects to my husband just over 2 months ago! Please know that I am with you in spirit and I want you to take comfort knowing that he has gone on to a greater reward. You and I now have 2 angels to protect us. God Bless you and your family!

To the Jefferson Thomas Family:

We as a people, would like to "THANK" Mr. Thomas and the other 8 human rights soldiers for their undeterred determination, bravery and stellar endurance! Your fight is and was 'our' and we will continue to fight. Your legacy will remain a living testimony in our hearts, forever. Mr. Thomas, you helped to pave the road to equality. Your vigilance has given your family an abundance of special memories, and another reason to be proud of the 'Thomas' name. God Bless you and your family! You can rest your armour, now, in peace. Your battle has been won. "Thank you" Mr. Thomas, "thank you!"

I have always been filled with pride at the courage, stamina, and dignity the young teenagers demonstrated as they integrated Central High School. We continue to admire the proud demeanor they maintained during this difficult, but most worthy, period of their lives.
We have always been prayerful for each member of the Little Rock Nine. However, at this juncture, we will continue with special prayers to sustain Jefferson's family thru this most difficult time in their lives.

Sonny and I really appreciate Jefferson Thomas' life walk. As one who desegregated FSU in Tallahassee, he was a trailblazer who let us know that if you believe, all things are possible - just stay focused on the mission
September 09, 2010
The sacrifice of trailblazers like Jefferson Thomas can never be fully understood, yet greatly appreciated by those of us who benefitted and now much take up the torch for those who follow us. The Lafayette Square family prays for his family, especially our neighbor Reggie Jones-Sawyer whose loss is so great.
September 08, 2010
My husband and I had the opportunity to visit the school and read the information about you and your classmates and your bravery in the lobby of the school. I have read about "The Little Rock 9", but the joy I felt in my heart was overwhelming. Thank you for your sacrafice to make things better for me. My prayers are with your family.
September 08, 2010
Having read this article about Mr. Thomas is quite moving. Mr. Thomas and his 8 other classmates are the people we should all want to meet; to be able talk about such real history; not make believe. I am one of the white ones of this country that is land of the free and home of the brave but for many it has been a long time coming. Think of how his parents must have felt; probably very scared for their children's safety but knowing it was the right time and place to make this stand. I know his family is proud of all he stood for as this person is....God Bless and know he is in a better place.
September 08, 2010
A true fighter and hero. Your memory will always live on.
September 08, 2010
My prayers are with you in this hour of sorrow. May God bless you and wrap his arms around you. Just remember everything will be alright.
September 08, 2010
What you and your fellow classmates done was nothing short of heroic. Now at the end of your journey, may we remember his contribution to this country and and be of comfort to those who mourn him; We miss you. RIP.
September 08, 2010
My thoughts and prayers are with the Thomas Family in their time of grief.
At times like these, "God is near to those who are broken at heart; And those crushed in spirit he saves." (Psalm 34:18) I hope this will bring the family a measure of comfort.

Sorry for you loss;
I didn't know Mr. Jefferson but from the entries it sounds like he was very much appreciated for his courageous contributions to the civil rights movement. When Jesus was on earth he spoke about a time when there would never be injustice or prejudice again. He asked in prayer for God's Kingdom to come. On earth as it is in heaven. When that prayer see's it's fulfillment in the near future Mr. Jefferson will see what the real life is like. For then God will be all things to all people.

Mary and Jeff's family. I am truly saddened to hear about Jeff's passing. Please accept my condolences. I will miss him as a friend and recall many, many fond memories with Jeff and his family. Bless you all.
September 08, 2010
Thank God for an angel named Mr. Jefferson Thomas. Reading your story and imagining the agony you and your fellow 8 classmates must have endured to make our lives and education easier is beyond comprehension. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your work is done down here. Well done.
September 08, 2010
For those that knew him, he has left an imprint of love on your hearts and those who didn't, he left a mark in our history books that you can overcome fear and conquer the enemy. I truly thank him for what he did at a young age. He is truly one of the reason we have the opportunities we have today. To his family remember "earth has no sorrow that heaven can't heal".
September 08, 2010
This man stood up, along with others, at a very difficult time in our history and opened opportunities for many in the future....he is to be greatly admired for his courage.
September 08, 2010
My condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Jefferson. I say, "Thank you Mr. Jefferson". As a part of the Little Rock 9, you sent a message around the world that still reverberates!! It is because of your efforts and others like you, that opportunities previously denied, were granted to millions. What a brave thing for a child to do. That is a part of your legacy. Your family should take much pride in the courage that you exhibited during those years and take comfort in being blessed to have shared their lives with you.

To the Thomas Family:

We were saddened to read of the death of your loved one and wanted to express our deepest condolences to you. Sadly Mr. Thomas is known so well from an issue for which no person should have to contend. How fortunate we are that our creator measures the condition of the heart and had recorded at Acts 10:34 that the He is not partial, but the man that fears him, is acceptable to Him. Please find comfort and hope in knowing that Mr. Thomas is now resting in God's memory.

Sincerely,
September 08, 2010

September 07, 2010
I am an associate professor in the Department of Humanities at Columbus State Community College. Two weeks before Mr. Thomas's death, my students in the African American history course were studying the civil rights movement, and had watched a video about the desegregation of Central High School that was narrated by Mr. Thomas. They were blown away by his courage and that of his eight colleagues, and grateful for their sacrifice. The students were also excited that someone who played such a pivotal role in American history lived in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Thomas honored us here at Columbus State several years ago when he visited and helped us celebrate African American History month.

The fortitude and perseverance shown by the Little Rock Nine not only paved the way for people of color to receive an equal education, but helped to make America a much more egalitarian society and worthy of the promises in the Charters of Freedom.

We hope our cards and the letter my Summer quarter students and I sent to Mr. Thomas, who was such a fine human being and an inspiration to many, provided some comfort. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
September 07, 2010
I have always had great respect for Mr. Thomas & the other 8 students who stood their ground during that bitter time in our nation's history. I was the same age as they were, when they marched into Central High School & I doubt I would have had the courage to do what they did. The walls of bigotry & racism fall, when good people stand up in defense of the rights of others.

My deepest sympathy is extended to the Thomas family, on the passing of a genuine American hero.

Although I never met Mr. Thomas, I thank God for him, his courage, tenacity, strength, and honesty - fighting for what he believed in which is one of corner stones that upholds the true meaning of righteousness for our people. September 07, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

This Man is part of our history. I thank God for him and his family.
September 07, 2010
Very few people leave a legacy like that in their lifetime. I can say with a heavy heart that I believe even fewer will do something like that in this generation-which is my generation, and now my sons'---Thank You for your courage, and determination to simply get the same education offered to everyone else. I'm sure you didn't do it for the fame, but to do the right thing, and inspire others to do the same thing--and to teach us of all races, how we should carry ourselves. I hope this generation and the ones to follow learn to do the same. GOD Bless you and your family....

A bright light has dimmed, Mr Thomas was such a wonderful, sweet man. Be blessed in your memories. I am so thankful to have known such a man. I am praying for your family.

Thank you Mr. Jefferson Thomas! May God Bless your family and friends during their time of grief.
September 07, 2010
May your works long be remembered by all who knew you and by those who only heard of you. A true trailblazer.
September 07, 2010
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mr.Thomas and send my heartfelt condolences to the family. I got meet him and some of the other members of the "Little Rock Nine" in 2007 when I attended the 50 year commemoration in Little Rock, Ark.
September 07, 2010
I am a teacher at Bexley Middle School and we had the pleasure of having Mr. Thomas come and speak with our 8th graders on several occasions. Mr. Thomas was able to "bring to life" the experiences that students were just able to read about. He was gentle and informative in his presentations and responses to student questions. He indeed was a part of history. We are honored that he took the time to share his life story with us. He will be missed. May his story live on.
September 07, 2010
Thank you Mr. Jefferson Thomas. Thank you very much!
September 07, 2010
The lives of very few people leave a mark in history and the times as did Mr. Thomas and the Little Rock 9. We and today's youth take sooooo much for granted, especially access to a free education. May he rest in peace and hope of the final resurrection.
September 07, 2010
Even though I did not know Mr. Thomas, I am thankful for his courage to pave the road for the children of the future. I am one of those children. God Bless You.
September 07, 2010
Thank you, Mr Thomas for opening the door for children, who may never know you or what you went through, to have an opportunity to receive an equal and safe education. It is most remarkable, that you retained your sense of humor through it all. You were truly a gift from God that has now been returned. Enjoy the rest that you have earned. "Goodnight, peaceful warrior, see you in the morning"
September 07, 2010

May the God of all comfort, comfort the family and friends of Jefferson Thomas. We all can look forward to the new “heavens and earth” God promised, where all of mankind will be children of God, based on His righteous requirements.
September 07, 2010
Mr Thomas...you and the other eight students were heroic the day you stepped into Little Rock High School. Because of the color of your skin, you were deemed ok to play basketball but not smart enough to sit next to a white student. I pray that these prejudices will go the way of the dinosaurs and disappear from the face of the earth. May angels of all colors lead you now into Paradise!
God Bless!
September 07, 2010
My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to the Thomas and Harper family. Jeff was truly a wonderful man. He was my friend and mentor for more than 30 years. He was a
humble man who was extremely wise and knowledgeable. Jeff was well versed in history, science, politics, business, education, religion and government matters. He was a walking computer! He had a very high IQ, but, never flaunted it.

Jefferson Thomas was a legend! The world has lost a great man! Rest in peace, Jeff.
September 07, 2010
I am so sorry for your loss. Though, I must admit this is a loss to many. The quiet strength and what I call the contribution to "united we stand" will never be forgotten.
Mr Thomas is a true American Hero and we thank him for his service in the wars he fought during his life. He will live on in the hearts of many.
September 07, 2010

September 07, 2010
Thank you is small word for a man who lived and loved during a time when we did not want to see change. Family, your history is part of something big. Always rememeber his pride, history.
September 07, 2010
I'm glad that Republican President Eisenhower had the courage to employ the 101st Airborne of the U.S. Army to ensure your right to an equal education in spite of the wilfull interference of Democrat Governor Orville Faubus, who stood in your way; and obstructed Negro Americans from obtaining a good education.
May all Americans understand history better and deal with historic fact and not fiction.
September 07, 2010
Mr. Jefferson had a profound affect upon so many lives. I was one of the blessed to have had the oppurtunity to work with Mr. Thomas and I looked to him as a true man of God and a mentor. He taught me much about life. God Bless Mrs. Thomas and his entire family, I pray for strength at this time of great loss.
September 07, 2010
I remember as a child myself the horror that these children were put through. My father tried his best to explain why some white people treated black people this way. We were taught to never be disrespectful or we would have to answer to him. My admiration for these folks have never diminished. I can't imagine how horrible it had to be to be treated "less than". So confusing for a child to be a playmate one minute and "not good enough" the next. Hopefully Jefferson Thomas' name will live on as one of the heroes of our time.
September 07, 2010
Every generation that follows owes a debt of gratitude to him and to all the pioneers of the Civil Rights movement. May God be with his loved ones and may he rest in peace.
September 07, 2010
My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jefferson Thomas. May the memories of his spirit and heart carry you through this most painful time.

Thank you Mr. Jefferson Thomas. As a young person I appreciate what you did to pave the way for our generation.
September 07, 2010
This was a jolt to my heart when I heard of his departure. I remember Jeff as one of the first people I met coming fresh off the street to my new government job almost 30 years ago. He was the heart of second shift. His sense of humor was the best and he kept all us newbies laughing as we learned our jobs. We recognized his wit and wisdom and appreciated him for it. Little did we know, at that time, he was a big part of history. I am so sad right now for his wife and family...but I know that that he has gone home and is welcomed there as he has been loved and appreciated here. All of my condolences to all who knew and cared about Jeff Thomas. Sadness now...but Joy will come later for his homegoing.
September 07, 2010

Death, be not proud

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

To Mr. Jefferson Thomas and family; I remember the Little Rock 9 because I watched from my tv, living in NYC and wondered why people were being so mean to you. As a child myself and not understanding about the Souths different ideas about equality among all humans, it was a scary time for me and I know for you nine children it had to have been awful. I salute you all and pray your lives have been easier as the years passed. God bless you all and your courageous families.

Our Sympathy To You And Your Family
You have our deepest sympathy. Wish there was more we could do. To help ease the pain and sorrow, We know you are now going thru. Where there is spiritual stagnation, I ask You to renew them by revealing Your nearness, and by drawing them into greater intimacy with You. Where there is fear, reveal Your love, and release to them Your courage. Where there is a sin blocking them, reveal it, and break its hold over my friend's life. Bless their finances, give them greater vision, and raise up leaders and friends to support and encourage them. Give each of them discernment to recognize the evil forces around them,
and reveal to them the power they have in You to defeat it. I ask You to do these things in Jesus' name.

Mr. Jefferson Thomas: Although I had
never heard of you singularly, I know
what your friends and you did. I see
it on TV and even though I'm Canadian,
I'm proud of what you all did.
You opened a lot of doors and I
commend you for that and everything
your friends and yourself did. I'm a
white person but I root for change.
If I had been around that High School
when you were I would've been on your
side. It takes a bigger person to
walk away from a fight than to
participate in one.
As Mr. Arthur Smith Jr. says, An
American Hero In More Than One way.
Rest In Peace Mr. Thomas, you've
earned it.

To the family of Jefferson Thomas...

"To God be the Glory for the life of Jefferson Thomas, a wonderful vessel used by God to help bring about justice and civil rights to our world.
I was a teenager during those tumultuous years in the 60s and know full well the struggle he and the other students encountered for all of us. His courage, his noble stance will forever be etched in the annals of time.
My faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ assures me that one day we will be united again with our friend and brother. God bless and keep you.

It hurts so much to hear about our loss of Jefferson...one of our LR NINE. I am blessed to have seen and embraced him in the lobby of The Rep Theater in LR, September 2007 as we arrived to see "It Happened In Little Rock" the tear-jerking stage play. My prayers go out to family and friends. Precious Memories. Jefferson paved the way for us to be where we are today. Well done!

We are sorry for your loss of Mr. Thomas. Surely Jesus met him at Heaven's gates, and Jefferson now knows/understands all of God's mysterious ways. You lead the way to Peace in our schools; now God gives you the reward to rest in Peace.
We hope this poem helps to ease some grief.
"Life is but a stopping place
A pause in what's to be
A resting place along the road
To sweet eternity
We all have different journeys
Different paths along the way
We all were meant to learn somethings
But never meant to stay
Our destination is a place
Far greater than we know
For some the journey's quicker
For some the journey's slow
And when the journey finally ends
We’ll claim a great reward
And find an everlasting peace
Together with the Lord."

I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of the Little Rock Nine students. I most recently visited the Central High School National Historic Site and had the opportunity to learn about their heroic struggle for equality. I read and listened to the exhibits and was grateful that all of the Little Rock Nine were able to talk about their experiences and record them for history. I was also thankful that they, including Mr. Thomas, received the well deserved recognition that they have received since then for their efforts. I have always admired these individuals in all that they did while attending Central High and for their rich lives afterwards when they all continued to contribute positively to this country. My condolences to Mr. Thomas' family and friends. I believe the world is a better place as a result of his having been present on this earth.

May God Bless the Thomas Family at this time. Sounds like Mr. Thomas was happy a man. Sorry for your loss.

My God bless this family. I did not know him but I have been through some of the same things he went through in changing from Black (colored)to White schools in the south. His grands will never know completely what the fight was because sometimes I wonder. Be very proud of him. God bless us all.
