I haven't yet finished reading Icebound but just can't put it down. I think Dr. Neilsen is the quintessential hero. I am inspired and very touched by her humanity even though I am also horrified by the inhumanity of cancer.
My deepest condolences to friends and family.

I just read Icebound, Dr. Nielsen's amazing gift of sharing. In life, she continued to inspire; but even now and in years to come, she will continue to bless the lives of others. Bravo, "Duffy," and thank you. We are sisters in so many ways, and would have been great friends.

November 13, 2009
I listened to Jerri's book "Ice Bound" on CD this past spring. Because it was actually her voice on the CD reading her own story, I felt a closeness with her. I then searched online to see if I could find recent info about her and found that her cancer had returned. Today I searched to see if I could find out how she was doing and discovered, sadly, that she had died back in June. What a courageous woman and an inspiration to all women. God be with you, Jerri. My deepest condolences to her husband, parents, brothers, close friends & children. If they haven't already, I truly hope that one day her children will realize just how special their mother really was.
November 11, 2009
Though I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Nielsen in person, she became my hero after reading her book! I wrote to her via her publisher and she answered with a wonderful personal note, which I will always treasure. What a wonderful, caring and giving person. My condolences to her husband, parents and to her brothers Scott and Eric.
November 01, 2009
I went to high school with Jerri and always remember her as the smartest girl in our class. Until a few years ago, I never realized the person in the South Pole was that Jerri. I printed the article, filed it in my desk, and ran across it today, thought I would look up what she was doing and found the obituary online. I am so sorry to hear that she had passed away. She will always be in my memories as this thin, energetic girl with short, blonde hair:) I feel priviledged to have known her.
October 08, 2009
I just finished listening to Jerri's book Icebound on CD. I was so interested in her story that I researched online and just found out about her passing away. I cried for an hour.
Jerri - thank you for such inspiring words. I will never forget your courage.

I have just seen the film starring Susan Sarradon based on Dr Nielsen's Antartic experience and how her courage and the commitment of those present there wrote another chapter in the book of Human endevour in her battle with the harsh Antartic elements and the life threatening cancer.
They say true imortality is to be remembered long after you have passed on and for Dr Jerri Neilsen, I believe she has attained that status because of her dertermination and the help of her Family and Friends.

I heard her speak here in Minnesota back in 1999, what a warm human being she was and her humor was incredible. I will cherish the picture I have of Her and I.

I am truly saddened by her passing, but what a gift that she shared with us..how to live life to the fullest.

I hope her children know what a special mother they had.
July 23, 2009
I'm writing so late because I was in the middle of her book and didn't want to learn things before they came up. What an awe-inspiring, genuine lady. She was a real as all of us and as extraordinary as few of us are willing to expose to the world. Thank you Gerri.
July 21, 2009
My condolences to the family of Dr. Jerri Nielsen FitzGerald, especially her husband, her loving parents and brothers. I'm sure she survived longer because of your deep love. I just finished reading "Ice Bound". What a courageous woman Jerri was. I remember when she was airlifted from the Pole in '99, so I enjoyed reading the daily account of living at the Pole. I sure hope that her children were finally able to think on their own and that they made amends with her before her passing. If not, what a tragedy for them. May Jerri rest in peace.

July 15, 2009
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Jerri and I were two of the four Rotary exchange students at Hagagymnasiet in Norrkoping,Sweden during the 1969-70 school year. She kept us in stitches with her stories about the Fotkliniken.

Even then, with her ebullient personality and inquisitive mind, I knew she was destined for great things.

I was shocked and saddened at her passing. I am a fifteen year survivor of DCIS breast cancer and never dreamed it would come back to claim Jerri. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Amazing Woman! May she rest in peace!
June 28, 2009
This woman showed me such bravery and hope for others while she was going through such a horribly disease as cancer, that she was determined to get through this. We as women espically should learn from her the strength and power of the will to live comes from within. She was a strong woman, and determined person. Through her I learned that anything can be possible as long as you are determined and put the will to live in front of all, for all your dreams will then follow. My heart goes out to this family, but most of all "Thank You" for the power you have shown in this battle, that anything can be done as long as you are willing to do it. May God Bless all of the family, and now there is a new Angel in Heaven to look down upon all of us.

To the family of Dr. Nielsen,

Through her strength and courage she helped inspire and encouraged many women to have Mammagrams and self-exams done. To me, she gave me the courage to follow her to Antarctica to work. As one person put it so greatly, a lot of people are mourning the passing of an entertainer while I mourn the loss of a wonderful women. May she be smiling in heaven.
June 27, 2009
She gave many women the courage to go on and she showed all of us how to fight the good fight and WIN!

June 27, 2009
I was very saddened to hear of Jerri's death.I met this beautiful lady on the QM2,where she gave the most wonderful & inspirational talk. She signed a copy of her book for me & we chatted for a few minutes.I will treasure the photo of the two of us together. How true are her words,"It's not when or how you die but how & if you truly were ever alive." She must have been so very happy in her short marriage to Tom.My thouhgts & prayers are with him & her Mum,Dad & brother.God Bless.x
June 27, 2009
To be a researcher in the South Pole under such extreme conditions was a noble enterprise, but to have endured what she did on her own was courageous. In a time when the Earth needs all the strong women of substance that we can get, it's sad that she didn't have more time here. Still, Jerri's legacy was a much needed role model and inspiration to all women, with or without cancer. My condolences to Jerri's family for your loss. Blessed Be.

Farewell Farewell My Love.
=======================================

Farewell farewell to You
My love;

As the Angels were
standing by to take You
home to heaven,

I pleaded with the Angels
not to take You away with
tears in My Eyes;

Then I heard a lovely
Voice gently whispering
saying its all in God's
hands,

But My heart can't and
won't say goodbye to You
My love;

All though Your love
leaves an empty void in
this heart of mine,

So all I can say to You is
farewell farewell My love;

But My heart can't and
won't say goodbye to You
My love,

Only time can heal this
broken and dying heart of
mine with every passing
years gone by;

So until then My love
farewell farewell to You
My love,

Until We meet again My
love.

I am an Australian and I have been so inspired by Jerri Nielsen. Her self treatment while in Antarctica was amazing. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer early 2000 and I know how difficult it was even though I had early diagnosis and great care givers. I am lookng forward to 10 years as a survivor. I read her book and followed her treatment etc via the internet and never failed to get inspiration from her. I was so sad to hear of her passing....while trillions in the world are mourning a singer/entertainer I am mourning Jerry Nielsen
My sympathies to her family. Barbara, NSW, Australia

June 26, 2009
As I logged on tonight, my home page listed "significant losses" of the week. Dr. Nielsen was the 4th and seeing her name, brought back memories of her TV movie. I had often wondered where she went after her recovery and was grateful that cancer survivors had such a strong role model to look to for inspiration and courage. I am a cancer survivor and grateful that this woman shared her story with me through the media and her writings. God gave you the gifts to be a healer in many ways. I know that you are at peace and eternally healed of the pain and fear of this cowardly disease called cancer. I will say a prayer for your survivors for a healing of their grief. God Bless you and yours.
June 26, 2009
My condolences to the family and friends of Dr.Jerri Nielsen during this time of your loss. The legacy to the world and the empowerment to all women is immeasurable. She has walked through the valley in the shadow of death and defeated it again. She is whole, healed, and joyful. My prayer is that you will find the small flame of joy deep inside you through the coming weeks.

Your book was incredible - I remember being in awe after I read it. Talk about carrying on through adversity. You made me proud to be a woman as well as a fellow Clevelander. I often wondered what had happened to you, and am glad to hear that you carried on with your profession and more importantly, found love once again in your life. Your story was truly inspirational, let it live on forever.

To the family of Dr. Nielsen:

It was my pleasure to work with Dr. Nielsen during her residency at The Toledo Hospital located in Toledo Ohio.

I remember the day she told a family, "sometimes you just have to let go and let God take over." I better understood those words after hearing about her cancer situation and self treatment.

She was an inspiration to many and she will be missed by many.

The movie about her cancer treatment brought tears to my eyes. I am so sorry that I did not get to see her when she was in Toledo for her book signing. I had always hoped to catch up with her one day and get her signature at that time. Unfortunately that day will not come while here on earth, but will come when we meet in Heaven!

Take care and may God see you through this most difficult time. Jerri was one of the best!
June 26, 2009
She was such a cool lady! I heard about this amazing woman on a documentary some years back and always prayed she'd recover from her cancer.

My sincere sympathies to her friends and family. My mother also died from breast cancer in 2002.

I hope her family can think of her passing as her going to explore other dimensions.

Sholem aleichem. Peace unto you,

June 26, 2009
My deepest sympathy to Jerri's family. I met Jerri in 1998 when I helped get her paper work together for her work at University Hospitals of Cleveland. We took to one another right away and became friends. We had long discussions about her children and her work. One day she came to me and told me that she had this job offer to go to the South Pole. I was shocked but after all she had been going through she was really looking for an adventure. I remember telling her that one day she would be famous and I wanted to be her agent. Little did I know then.

When she got to the South Pole I heard from her very frequently through email's and I will always treasure her stories of her experience. She was such an inspiration. When she came back home we lost touch because of all she had going on in her life but I caught up on all her tv appearances, her book and movie.

I loved Jerri she was a wonderful person, not just because of her ordeal but deep inside she was a wonderful friend and I will miss her always.

I will be in Boston at the end of July and would like to come and visit her gravesite if someone could get in touch with me and give me the information I would appreciate it. Contact me.

R.I.P. Jerri.
June 25, 2009
There's no doubt what a brave and strong woman Jerri was. Her story is an inspiration to those struggling with cancer or any of life's challenges. She most affected me when I read her book and learned the reason why she chose to go to the South Pole. I too lost my children in a very similar story to hers while living in Ohio. Her decision to move beyond her pain of the loss of her children and use her energies to help others and later become a model of handling life's challenges with grace, dignity and courage has been my inspiration. I have purchased several copies of her book and have given them to those needing an example of moving on to a greater good after experiencing injustice in your own life.

Thank you Jerri for your example of how to live life after/during difficult times.
June 25, 2009
Jerri......you are a true inspiration to all women across the nation! Now you are in heaven.....enjoy!!!
June 25, 2009
What an inspiration! When I dance wildly alone in my home I remember the documentary of a courageous woman embracing life through dance. Dr. Fitzgerald taught me to dance like no one's watching. I will always always remember. Dance Dr. Dance.
June 25, 2009
What a very brave lady! My condolences to her family and friends.

May God keep her near!
June 25, 2009
To the entire family of Dr. Jerri Nielsen, there is no way I can say how sorry I am for your loss of Jerri. I read "Icebound" and was very moved. It was the first, and last time, according to Jerri, that 1 doctor would be alone at Amundsen-Scott, and from the time Jerri was recovered by the New York National Guard and flown to Christchurch, New Zealand, I just prayed that the book would have a happy ending. It did. But it is too bad the ending was not what was expected. I would not be surprised if Dr. Jerri Nielsen and my Mom and Grandmothers are actually talking to each other, playing cards (after saying hi to other family members).
June 25, 2009
I knew Dr. Jerri when she ran the urgent care center in Sandusky, Ohio. My father, another doctor, worked for her. She stood up to him and kept him in line - not an easy task by any means. I remember her as an excellent physician and a gentle, strong woman. She was very brave. I wished I had known her better.
Catharine Hadley, Port Clinton, Ohio
June 25, 2009
Although I never met Jerri, I feel that she was an inspiration to any woman who believes that they can achieve anything. I am sorry to hear of her passing. Such a valiant and couragous person...long live her legacy!
June 25, 2009
My deepest sympathy to Jerri's family. I had the good fortune to attend one of her presentations and had her autograph her book to my daughter who had just finished her residency. She was an inspiration to all women. May God Bless you. Marie
June 25, 2009
My most heartfelt condolences are with you and your family. I read Jerri's book and thoroughly enjoyed it. She was a special and courageous woman. I was sorry to see this news and just wanted to express my sorrow and prayer for you.

I heard her speak years ago while she was in Santa Rosa, CA. I'll cherish her book that she signed in my mother's name who has since passed from breast cancer.
June 25, 2009
Dr. Nielsen has been an inspiration since I read her book when it was first published. Her name has been added to the dedication page for my Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in the Twin Cities in August. Her life and now, sad passing, is added inspiration for this event which raises for Breast Cancer research. For Jerri, and all women, there will be a world without breast cancer someday!

June 25, 2009
Our prayers and sympathy are with you at this sad time. What an incredibly courageous woman! It seemed not very long ago that we listened to the news report of her plight and watched the daring rescue.

How we all long for the time when, according to Rev 21:3 & 4, sickness, sorrow and death will be things of the past. Jerri suffers no more now, but patiently sleeps in God's memory with the hopes of benefitting from the promises that will be realized under God's Kingdom arrangement.

Take Care,

I had the enormous privilege of meeting Jerri when she came to speak in Rockford, IL last year. Her speech was amazing and showed what a tremendously funny and warm woman she was. We exchanged a few comments face to face, I am a Brit, we talked about that for a few seconds and she signed my book. She was absolutely beautiful with a depth of heart that shone from her face, she was a tremendous inspiration to me. I am deeply saddened by her death and my heartfelt sympathies go out to her family. Rest in peace beautiful and courageous Dr. Jerri.

To The Nielsen Family,
It is with great sadness that I read about the passing of Jerri. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. The many warm tributes in this guest book are a reflection of a wonderful person. You were blessed. The love of family and friends will give you strength and take comfort in knowing that God cares for you. Psalm 34:18 tells us "God is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.

Tom,

Thinking of you and sending you strength and comfort. Your life with Jerri was far too short, but remember...life is not measured by how many breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Jerri was truly breathtaking.

I was truly awed at the fortitude and courage of Dr. Nielsen during her time in the South Pole, and while her fight is now over, the promises of God continue. One in particular consoles by saying "As the last enemy death is to be brought to nothing". (1 Cor 15:26) What a beautiful time that will be, and soon. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Jerri will never ever cease inspiring us to be introspective, tremendously joyful, and grateful for every moment of life.

She is also deeply, painfully missed.

Tom, Dee, and the Cahill Family,

I was so sorry to hear of Jerri's passing.

She replied with enthusiasm to my invitation to Erie, PA, a few years ago for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk; and, her presence made the event a great success.

As a doctor and medical school professor, I have spotlighted her as an inspiration to patients and an example to young physicians.

We have lost a friend and a role model.

To Tom and the Cahill Family,

I returned from Greenland today to hear the news that Jerri had passed away. I tell those who ask that I am sorry for all of you for losing a wife, a daughter, a sister and a mother, and I am sorry for myself for losing a friend and a kindred spirit. I celebrate, however, her amazing life.

When we set off on the journey via LC130 in October of 1999 from Scotia, NY to bring Jerri home to be with her family and to seek healthcare, we had no idea that the world was watching. We truly went to the South Pole as people who wished to help another human being.

I have cherished every moment that we have shared with Jerri and with her family. Thank-you for sharing her wonderful ways with all of us.

With our deepest sympathy,

I only met Jerri Lin once and she was simply the wife of my dear friend Fitz. Tom was one of my closest roommates in college & life long friend. Jerri Lin joined with us at a college reunion a number of years ago. What struck me was her humility and grace during that weekend event. Never once did she laude her accomplishments, but simply and elegantly joined in as a friend. Though we all knew of her extrodinary accomplishments, Jerri Lin became our friend, who happened to be an amazing person. Seeing the love between Tom and her, she automatically became a friend of mine. After much prodding, she related bits and pieces of her story and the pride Tom showed caused me to tear. Beyond the obvious, her commitment to medicine and the well being of others, well I gave her the nickname "McGyver" for her extrodinary capabilities as a person and healer.
To many who read this, I envy your longterm friendship with Jerri Lin. I can only imagine her affect on you all. For me- well - I was fortunate to know her for only 72 hours, but greatness goes beyond time, it becomes part of each of us. To Tom, my good friend, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family.
I apologize for being too wordy but I simply had to say it.
Be well,
Dave Blinn

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To: The family Of Jerri Nielson

Lean On God
By: Charles G. Turner, Sr.

In life our love ones and friends sometimes suddenly pass away
For many reasons we don’t understand
Our hearts become heavy with sorrow
Just remember to pray to God and put it in his hands

As time goes on there are days when we feel sad
When that happens think of the good times you’ve had
Lift up your head and carry on
And ask God to make you strong

Lean on God through your stress and strain
And he will surely ease the hurt and pain

With sympathy

Jerri's book and movie were such an inspiration to me when I had breast cancer in 2001. I am thankfully in remission. Cancer is a wicked, unfair, sneaky, agressive disease that I hope with more research will be wiped off the earth soon. We should all contribute in Jerri's name. Condolences to all of her loved ones.

To Tom and the Cahill family,
During the past months it has been my honor to care for Jerri through Noble VNA.
There were lessons learned from our time together which I will take peace from - to be more courageous in my own life, to willingly give more and to expect nothing in return, and lastly to know that no situation in life is impossible.
Jerri was not only my patient, but we quickly became great friends. I will miss her always,
Peace, Linda Bickford
