I was introduced to Jim by my sister, she is a reporter and knew most of the players that year(1979-82) He was a great guy and a good friend. He adored my little girl, Angie, he used to carry her on his shoulders, we loved him.

I met Jim in Baltimore some twenty plus years ago. While the encounter was brief, it was a memorable moment. He joked about my rather beat up car, and doubted my having any success with the ladies in lght of the vehicle. It was a pleasure meeting him. May he rest in peace, and my regards to his family. Richard Johnson, Jr. a fan of Jim and Henry.

"Bibby" was my coach in 1996 in Lynchburg. He was a a bright and happy face in the world of baseball, which wasn't full of bright faces. I can hear his loud voice in the Lynchburg locker room now, trying to be tough, but inside he was a pushover. I remember his putting 8 baseballs in one hand, and none of us could do such a thing. God bless, RIP Bibby.

Jim was my pitching coach in Lynchburg in 1991 for the Lynchburg Red Sox. If it wasn't for his guidance I would have never had the baseball career I had. He was a true class act, leader, and mentor.

February 21, 2010
I have been a life long Pittsburgh Pirate fan and thus, came to know of Jim via his amazing time with the Pirates. Meeting and speaking with him and having Jim sign a scorecard was a wonderful memory. An even better memory, however, is to have the pleasure of working with Jim's wonderful and special daughter Tamara, and getting to know "Daddy" through her eyes - this was a blessing for a once wide-eyed and in-awe young man. To learn of the humanity and charity of a fine man. To see the love of and for a wonderful family. As many others, Jim blessed my life in ways he would never know or could never imagine. I celebrate a life much too short, but oh so well lived. Our love and thoughts are with all Jim's family
February 21, 2010
My sympathies to the Bibby Family. I worked with Tanya at John Hancock in Greensboro, NC in the early 90's. God bless you all and give you peace.
February 21, 2010
To The Bibby Family, Jim and the rest of the 1979 Pirates were heroes to me. I was 14 in 1979 and I will never forget watching Jim pitch game 7.But to come back and never quit, never give up, even when your down 3 games to 1,that was purely inspirational ! Jim and his 1979 Pirates team were an inspiration to me. One of my childhood heroes is gone , But I will never forget him, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
February 20, 2010
My deepest sympathy to the Bibby family in Jim's passing. God must have needed a pitcher as He called Jim home. Bibs was truly a wonderful gentleman, friend, and family man in all he did. I am so thankful to have had the pleasure to know and be friends with him. We shared so many good times together in baseball and golf, and just hanging out. We have all lost a very special friend, and a true legend in all he did. My regards to all his family at this time.

To the Bibby Family, Although I didn't know Jim Bibby I grew up watching the Pirates as a kid and they have always been my favoite team. I come from a small town in Pennsylvania not far from where Ed Ott grew up who played with Jim on the Pirates 1979 World Series Championship team. I was only in 7th grade at that time and that's when I really fell in love with the game of baseball the Pirates really had the "We Are Family" feeling that I don't believe to this day teams seem to have and it made me feel like being a fan I was a part of that team and for that I want to thank you Jim and your family. God Bless you and your family.

To the Bibby Family,
Jim Bibby was a very special man who touched the lives of many. He was an absolute joy to watch on the field, but by the same token, he was a great person. Take comfort in the fact that so many share your grief and knowing that even through your pain, the Lord continues to watch over you. You have my deepest sympathy.
February 20, 2010
To the Bibby Family,

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Jim was special and it was a pleasure to have known him.
February 20, 2010
To the Bibby Family -
I did not know Jim. He was a terrific pitcher who was sometimes unhittable. He helped the Pittsburgh club immensely and his approach to the game was admirable. I can still see him throwing heat on a hot day with the perspiration rolling down his face. He was a complete competitor who always gave his all. From what I have been reading, he was even a better person than he was a player and that guarantees his place in heaven
February 20, 2010
Thank you Mr. Bibby for the years of excitement you gave us Rangers fans, when we didn't have much to get excited for in those days. Blessings be to your family!
February 20, 2010
I saw Mr. Bibby pitch in his first season as a professional ballplayer, for the Marion (Va.) Mets. I was only 10, and he was the tallest man I had ever seen! Everyone could just tell he was going to be special, and I enjoyed following his career.

May God give peace and consolation to the family.
February 20, 2010
I attended Fayetteville State University with Jim Bibby back in the 1960's. He played baseball and I played football. Even then, Bibby had a spirit and personality that was bigger than the sky. He was fun, friendly and just one of the guys. He could also throw a baseball, as we all know. He was something to see during him warm-up before the game. Never doubted his ability to win or strike out the next batter. After the game he would come to the dinning hall and act as if nothing had happen.

My prayers and God's blessing to the entire Bibby, to his dauthers, brothers and others.
February 20, 2010
My prayers to the Bibby family, sorry to here of your lost, growing up in Franklinton,N.C. We are happy to have known Jim and his family. May God Bless.

February 20, 2010
Every time I saw Jim he would start laughing before I could open my mouth . . . Jim Bibby tall and handsome came to my class room at Amherst High School in the early 70’s to substitute. All the girls had their eyes on him, he dropped the chalk on the floor and when he reach down to retrieve it he split his pants. He walked backward out of the door, a few minutes passed and he returned, we all laughed and from that day every time I saw Jim Bibby I would turn and walk backward. This became our way of saying hello.

The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for You are with me;
your rod and your staff-
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the
house of the LORD
my whole life long.
~Psalm 23

To: Jim Bibby family my condolences.
It was July 30 1973 Oakland A's vs Texas Rangers I was sitting 2 rows back of Oakland A's dugout I witness 13 A's strike-out many throwing their bats after making an out. In the final inning I stood as many other fans did and witness one of the greatest baseball game I had ever saw...

Mrs. Bibby, I am so sorry for your lost. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. I remember when you taught me in the 2nd grade. It was a day that I have always remembered. He is in God's care now and I know that he is still playing baseball in heaven. Debbie Freeman

There will always be that empty bar stool at the Inn but Bibs' baseball memory will live on in the trophy case there and the memory of his good deeds will never be forgotten around Lynchburg and Central Va. Baseball needs more men like Bibs, a man with the big hands, the big heart and a fiery competitor. He'll always have a place in my "Hall of Fame." God bless the family.

I never met Jim, but feel like I know him well, through the stories his daughter, Tamara -- my colleague at work -- shared with me.
Larger than life, generous, genial, Jim Bibby was the kind of man any young man should try to model. Though I never met him, I miss him.
Mrs. Bibby, Tanya, Tamara, know that the Gondella family keeps you close in our hearts in this time of sorrow.
February 19, 2010
Bibby Family, I'm sure you do not remember the young college student that lived across the street from you in Pittsburgh those many years ago. I did want to say that I often talked with Jim and considered him a good man and neighbor. I have since grown up and moved away but always remembered the big friendly guy that happened to play baseball, I went to almost every home game for several years before and after Jim was a Pirate but The summer in the townhouse remains special to me as Jim always had a ticket laying around for me. I often speak fondly of how Jim and Don would take time to talk with a neighbor kid and be a friend and role model. God Bless and I wanted you to know that Jim Bibby has and always will be a good memory and touch lives of people that you never realized.
February 19, 2010
With sadness for the family, I wish you strength. Pat M. Va.

To Jim's Family ~
My friends and I had the pleasure of meeting Jim in Cleveland - He was a good man and great player. Reading all these wonderful entries in the Guest Book proves it over and over and over again.
May your memories and ours comfort you at this difficult time.
May he rest in peace. Amen
February 19, 2010
I grew up in Cleveland, rooting for the Indians. There was a story in the paper there many years ago about a lady with small children having her car break down on the freeway entrance ramp after an Indians game. A Good Samaritan stopped and helped, getting dirty, crawling under the car and under the hood for a hour to get her going. As he worked on the car, she realized that it was Jim Bibby on his way home after pitching that day. He refused any payment and just quietly went on his way. In later years I met Jim and understood why this story made perfect sense.
February 19, 2010
Jim Bibby was a true baseball guy. He will be missed dearly and my thoughts and prayers go out to his Family. Thanks for the memories Jim.

I WHISPER YOUR NAME TO THE

I WHISPER YOUR NAME TO THE

THE WIND CARRIES YOUR NAME
SO FAR AWAY ACROSS THE BLUE

THERE'S A FIRE IN THE SKY
AS THE SOUND OF THUNDER AND
LIGHTNING ARE ROARING ACROSS
THE BLUE SKY,

THEN SUDDENLY FROM OUT OF NO
WHERE I HEAR YOUR SWEET
SOFTLY VOICE CALLING OUT TO
ME IN THE WIND;

AND IT BRINGS TEARS OF JOY TO
MY EYES TO HEAR YOUR SWEET
SOFTLY VOICE CALLING OUT TO ME
IN THE WIND.

I met him and his brother Henry 50 years ago when working on my grandfather's farm during summers. Even as a child I was struck by these young men's humble demeanor at a difficult time in our country's history. I followed their careers afterwards and it was just the same. In a time when athletes are so often primadonnas, Jim was the same hard working, humble man I had remembered. I can see by the comments here that he touched many people later in life in Lynchburg. May God bless your family.

From the perspective of a baseball fan, this man was a hero. He put fear in the opposition and confidence in his teammates. Watching him through the seventies and the great Pirate year in 1979(We are family) , I saw the consummate professional. The way baseball was meant to be played. Take the ball and do your job. He was a great example for the youngsters coming up. We need more Jim Bibby's. Rest in Peace, Jim, you did well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim at a Cleveland Indians Fantasy Camp and he made me and everyone around him feel as if we had been teammates and friends forever.
I pray that your tears of sorrow will soon be replaced by the tears of joy over having shared your lives with him. What a great guy.
My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

City Stadium will not see the likes of Jim Bibby. Even after his coaching days, whenever he came back he was never to busy to talk to the fans. I have wonderful memories of his 15 years as pitching coach. I can see him going to the pitchers mound, a imposing figure. We have lost a good friend. My sympathy to the Bibby family. We share your loss. May God bless you and give you strenth for the days ahead.

To the Bibby family,
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband and father. He became an instant friend when I moved to Lynchburg--far from home--almost 18 years ago to work for the team. Hours at the ballpark, miles on the road and laughs to numerous to count with Bibby are my favorite memories of the years I lived in Virginia. His multitudes of friends and fans will never forget him.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To Jackie, Tam and Tanya,
Your husband, and father, was a man that knew no strangers, and always left people smiling and laughing. Bib and I started with the Lynchburg Mets baseball team the same year (1985)and I treasure the memories of working with Jim, playing golf and softball together and listeing to his stories...man could Bibby tell stories! He was a giant of a man, but his heart was even bigger. He was always eager to help out a worthy charity, and truly enjoyed his role at the Lynchburg Y. Bibby will be missed. He will leave a void in Lynchburg baseball that will not soon be filled. "Salad Bar's Daddy", and your husband and father, will live in our hearts and memories forever.

February 18, 2010
To the Bibby Family,
Please know that I have not seen Jim Bibby in a number of years, but we knew all of the Bibbys from Franklinton. We lived in Louisburg, and our high school competed against Fred, Jim and Hen's high school. My Family lived across the street from Mrs Edna Bibby
Ridley, so we all feel like family. Mrs Odessa Bibby Hawkins was a good friend of my Aunt Readie Ruffin. They all taught school there in Louisburg. So when Jim and Hen went on to become pro players, we all claimed them. I will pray for his reposed soul, and may light perpetual shine upon him!
February 18, 2010
Thank you Jim Bibby for touching many lives. It has been a pleasure knowing you for the past 25 years, as one of our coaches, a golf buddy and friend.
I won't forget the Super Bowl parties, NCAA BB pools, racketball at the Y, charity/fundraising events, spring training, weekend at the Homestead and countless others. God's strength and comfort be with Jackie, Tam and Tanya and family.

The 79 Pirates provided me with one the best world series playoffs. I was 22 and was so happy to see the Pirates victory over the Orioles.
Jim Bibby was a huge part of that season (2.81 ERA).
Thanks for the memories

We will always remember Mr. Bibby for his visit to our daughter in the hospital. It was about 1980 and she had to be hospitalized over Christmas. Imagine our surprise when this giant of a man came into her room to bring her greetings, gifts, and get well wishes. It said volumes about the man he was. We treasure that visit with him among the many good memories of Lynchburg. Peace to the Bibby family and thanks for sharing this true "gentle"man with us and others. Kim and John Wright

In 1995, a player for the Lynchburg Hillcats gave my 7 year old daughter a baseball autographed by the team. After a couple of minutes looking the ball over, she informed the player that "Jim Bibby didn't sign this". The player went back to the clubhouse, waited for Jim to finish showering and got him to sign the ball. My daughter still has that ball and Jim became one of our favorite coaches to come to Kinston, NC. May God bless you and your family in your time of sorrow and as we celebrate Jim's life.

With deep sympathy to the family. Though I had not seen Jim in decades, by extension we were "kissing cousins." My godmother, Odessa Bibby Hawkins, was his aunt, and my mother always kept me up to date on what the folks from Franklinton were up to.
February 17, 2010
I knew and worked with Jim as a physical therapist and assistant to the athletic training staff of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Jim was on of the kindest, funniest and charismatic players in Pittsburgh Pirate Baseball history. He became a friend to me and my work colleagues, and had so much depth, something that is missing in professional sports. I have so many funny memories, but the one that will always be with me is that he took the time to attend my 30th birthday.
I am deeply saddened by Jim's death. I hope that his family can be comforted by the happy memories that he brought to so many.
He was a wonderful ballplayer...but so much more!
February 17, 2010
Jim will be surely missed, I remember when my fartherin-law was in Autumn Care in Altavisa he had received a picture of Jim and my mother in-law knew Jim was a friend of mine so she ask if I could have him sign it and of coarse Jim did he always had a place in his heart for others. Jim was so well know as a ball player but he was just plain Jim, always ready to play golf although I did not play he played with many of our mutual friends. I will miss him much a the Hillcats games but just being a good friend. My wife says she was drawn to Jim because of his personality and never really knew who he was until later, he just made people feel happy.

God Bless his family my prayers and thoughts are with you.

A loving Friend

To the Bibby Family:
Back in 79, when you all lived at Kingswood, Jim would come and spend a little time at the gas station where I worked. He would often join us for lunch. He was a gratious and kind gentleman. We would always kid him about how big his hands were. I think that he just enjoyed hanging out with us as much as we enjoyed being with a World Class Pitcher, and Human Being. Peace to you.

Tony and I (Cleveland fans) were in Baltimore to see Cleveland play. Before the game, Jim walked over to the seats where we were and spoke with us. When we told him where we lived (Franklin Co.) he flashed that great smile of his. Great conservation. He will be missed.

To the Bibby family, As you have lost a dear family man, I have lost a dear friend. During my minor league scouting seasons, PBR meetings, and the Salem/Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame banquets, Jim always treated me with the utmost respect and friendship. His professional and jocular demeanor enabled him to have many friends. I WILL MISS HIM. God Bless each of you!! Bo

To the Bibby Family,
I was stunned to hear about the death of Jim Bibby. He was an icon of Lynchburg baseball and could be counted on for a wave every time he walked from the bullpen to the dugout. As a child living in Madison Heights, it was fun to turn his baseball card over and see our hometowns were the same. We have lost a fine man.
