I remember Jimmy Hunter stepping out onto the stage and singing a popular song of the day with no music to accompany him. The year was 1954 and he was in the seventh grade. It was a talent contest and he won hands down, even without the music.

To Jimmy's wife, his children and especially his grandchildren, from someone you never met, and to all Jimmy's friends and admirers in his adult life, may I please add to your perception of Jimmy Hunter what I remember.

Jimmy Hunter was an icon to his alma mater before NASCAR was invented.
I did not know Jimmy as an adult, but I knew him and his sister, Roseanne, also departed, as schoolmates. In grade school Jimmy was a sweet boy who was best known for a great singing voice. He took this claim to fame with him to high school where he and some classmates formed a great group he called the "Inky Dinks." No assembly was complete until Jimmy Hunter and the Inky Dinks had sung "Heart of My Heart."

Jimmy was a jack of all trades and master of many. He played all sports and excelled in every one. He proved that a little guy could be a football giant. He always had a smile and a kind word and laughed easily. He made lower classmen feel like he actually knew who they were. He was a pied piper kind of leader.

My heart is warmed to know that he grew to adulthood and kept with him the wonderful traits that made an adored boy become an admired man. The world should have more Jimmy Hunters.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jim Hunter for over 20 years, both at Darlington Speedway and with NASCAR. I will remember him as one of the greatest leaders and ambassador for the Sport. I was very proud to call him "friend" and will never forget his kindness and guidance through the years. He has left a big hole that will be impossible to fill and was the last of the "good guys".

I never had the pleasure of meeting your beloved Jim but as an avid Nascar fan I respected and felt like I knew his familiar face watching activities at the track. Whenever there may have been a dispute with rules, drivers, penalties, etc, we could always wait for the real story and trust we were hearing an acurate briefing of the truth. He was a man of respect who gave it and in turn received it. A man of class, I am so sorry for your loss. God speed,
Linda

October 30, 2010
First and foremost the loss of a husband to his wife of 48 years Ann. The loss of a father to his children Amy and Scott. The loss of a grandfather. No words come to mind that can express how empty a feeling this can be. In this time seek God for help in your loss. God I believe has a plan for each of us and it is not ours to question what or even why. We can change that plan by not seeking God in our lives not that God give up on us it is that we give up on him. I believe it was Gods plan for Jim to be and do all he did in NASCAR. God be with each of you at this time as well as each day of your lives.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Jim is a true Nascar legend. Thanks for everything Jim. Please tell Dale we all said hello and we miss him too.
October 30, 2010
The article says little about Jim's work in the community, and I think his volunteer efforts say so much about the man he was.

During his tenure as president of the Darlington Raceway, he worked tirelessly to make the City Of Darlington a better place to live and work.

He embraced charitable causes--ones he believed in--with a passion! Having worked with Jim during my years as executive director of the Pee Dee Education Foundation, I can say without hesitation that he breathed new life into our board of directors and helped us bring about many positive changes, particularly in the area of fund raising.

Jim didn't walk in with a check in hand--he walked in with an idea, a concept! And he got the board excited about seeing that idea develop into a plan and ultimately an event that raised awareness of our cause and generated funds to support the public schools in the entire Pee Dee.

On many occasions, I was called to a press conference that had nothing at all to do with my nonprofit work. Yet Jim took every opportunity to bring the foundation's work to light. I fondly remember walking into a building full of sports reporters who were there to talk about NASCAR. And while they got their story, Jim always remembered to share the Pee Dee Education Foundation's story with that large group of people, sharing our mission in hopes that others would come along beside him.

If he announced a new race sponsor, he called the sponsor before the press conference and asked them to bring along a check for the foundation. When he committed to the work of a charity, he gave it his heart and soul and enjoyed every second of it.

He often commented that he enjoyed being a part of the board of the Pee Dee Education Foundation because he knew where every penny of the money we raised was going. He expected everyone to work as hard as he did, and often remarked that he gave it his all because I did.

My time at the foundation coincided with his years as president of the raceway. I recruited him as a board member just months after he took on his new role. When I resigned from the foundation in 1998, Jim resigned, too. I can still hear him say, "Martha, I told you that if you ever quit, I would, too!"

Nonprofit work is extremely difficult because staff is limited and they find themselves, literally, singing for their supper. With Jim on board, I always felt supported and encouraged. He made my work so much easier.

During his years as president of the Darlington Raceway, his contributions to the greater community were immeasurable!

My thoughts and prayers are with Ann and his children. He was a loving husband, proud father, and doting grandfather! I will miss him!
