There hasn't been one day that has passed since April 16 that I have not thought about Madame. I was lucky enough to have her for two semesters my sophomore year at Virginia Tech. She was the kindest professor I have ever had and will never forget her generosity. On the day of the final of my second semester I had the wrong time for the exam and missed it by 2 hours. I emailed her so upset, thinking that I was going to fail the class because I wrote down the wrong time. Not only did she let me make up the exam (even when she knew I had skipped several classes throughout the semester), she corrected it after I was finished and told me that I should pursue my studies in French at Virginia Tech. And so I did, here I am today with my Bachelor of Arts in French and I am not sure if I would have pursued it without her encouragement. Merci Madame, vous nous manquez, je ne vous oublierai jamais.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sparkle in the snow.
I am the shredded leaves that blow.
I am the sunlight on growing grain.
I am the gentle summer rain.
I am the quiet bird at night.
Circling about; Taking flight.
So do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
April 30, 2007
RISE UP SLOWLY, ANGEL

Rise up, slowly, Angel.
I cannot let you go.
Just drift softly midst the faces,
In sorrow now bent low.

Ease the searing anger,
Born in harsh unyielding truth
That Death could steal my loved one
From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel.
Do not leave me here alone,
Where the warmth of mortal essence
Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Speak to me in breezes
Whispered through the drying leaves,
And caress my brow with raindrops
Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Rise up slowly, Angel,
For I cannot hear the song
Which calls you through the shadows
Into the light beyond.

Wrap me in your downy cape
Of sunshine, warm with love,
And kiss a tear-stained mother's face
With moonlight from above.

Then wait for me at sunset,
Beside the lily pond,
And guide me safely homeward
To your world,which lies beyond.

Just spread your wings and take me
In reunion’s sweet embrace,
And we shall soar, together,
To a different time and place.

To The Couture-Novak Family:
I am writing this brief note to your family because I so deeply feel that when we are faced with the sudden loss of someone so very dear to us that it is one of the hardest things in our lives we will have to face. Yet, I would like to share with you something that touched my heart, it is the knowledge that God will respond to our persistent prayers to help us through any tough time such as this. At Philippians 4:6 and 7 it says that "the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers." Please know that my prayers are with you at this time and I urge you to continue to pray for strength to get through the rough moments ahead.
April 30, 2007
To The Family of Jocelyne Couture-Nowak-Please accept my deepest sympathy to your family. Always look to God's Word for the comfort & strength you need to endure this most difficult time. Revelation 21:3,4 promises that soon sorrow, sickness & even death will be done away with. Also take comfort that Jehovah God does care about you and He has the power to resurrect our loved ones.(John 5:28,29)

I am very saddened to hear about the loss of Jocelyne. I always enjoyed speaking to Jocelyne while teaching tennis to her daughter Sylvie. We would talk often about Polish food and she took such pleasure and excitement in watching Sylvie on the tennis court. She was always smiling and took in every word that was said to her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and I will always remember the smile that Jocelyne wore every time I saw her. It was an honor to know her.
April 28, 2007

Jocelyne Couture-Nowak torpedoes through H2O
One hand over the other she goes faster than slow
Her legs help row her to win
A medal because she knows how to swim
She kneels next to her husband in the dirt
Enjoying their time together with her garden flirt
They’d plant and plow then it’s time to look around
To explore every spot, every place, every bit of ground
They have bond so amazing it’s something to envy
Her being wonderful is the essential key
A mother, a wife, a professor of French
Jocelyne was someone that made liking her a synch

Madame,
Do you remember the day I didn't come to class and then we bumped into each other at Boudreaux's downtown later that night? I thought for sure I was done for, but even then you were so happy to see me, and I was so happy to see you. I wish I could go back in time and get up for that 9:05 am class, just to have been able to spend that time with you. I hope you enjoyed my speech yesterday afternoon in the garden on campus and the roses I left at your office door last week. there really are no words to describe you or flowers beautiful enough to thank you with. I'll see you next class, up there. A la prochaine!
April 25, 2007
Dear family,
I pray that God will take you through this dificult time. I feel sad for your families but I know that God will give you strength in this difficult time.

On behalf of the Members of First Christian Church, in Burlington Iowa, we want to express our utmost condolences at this most difficult time in your lives. May it be a comfort to you and your family and friends to know that you are being remembered right now and in the months to come in the thoughts and prayers of so many. May you find peace in God’s never failing love and care and may God's blessing be with you and your family at this time. It is our fervent prayer that you find strength in the Lord!
Jesus told his disciples, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

April 23, 2007
I pray for you, Mr. Nowak and the children every day, pushing you up, up up before someone who said that He came to heal the broken-hearted. I love the language your very loved one loved. Your bonnie joy in life drew the line between good and evil. The last day was a line drawn. The closer you draw to God, the closer you dwell on the side of good, where your very loved one stood.

Be blessed by her every kindness, her uncommon life. You were blessed every day by her. I hope you will continue to find ways to be a blessing to others, never giving in to darkness. Always reaching for light. Never letting any darkness separate you from the light of love.

Closer to God. Further from evil. Closer to love.

j'taime.

I cannot come to terms with the senseless loss of this fine woman and teacher. I am at a loss of words to comfort all those that love her.
I can say that she is in my heart and prayers.
Here in Israel we say, "may she rest in peace and may her loved ones know no sorrow." that is what I wish for her family and friends.
Let this be the last senseless death.
Without her the world is a sadder place.
April 23, 2007
It's so terrible that something like this can still happen in the year 2007...
You will forever be in the world their prayers, their thoughts, their heart!

April 23, 2007
I did not know you or your family. But I don’t believe there is a person in the world whose heart has not been touched by this tragedy. There is nothing in this life that brings us more sorrow than to lose loved ones in death. Even harder to bear is when the lives of loved ones are lost due to an unexpected tragedy. The shock can be overwhelming.
Be assured that God promises that he…”is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalms 34:18) Nothing can bring us more peace of mind than the inspired words of… the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) Take comfort and solace in the Bible's message as we all await the time when GOD…” will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4)
April 23, 2007
I trust that God be your strength and comforter in your time of sorrow. Be encouraged and be blessed.
April 23, 2007
It has been 20 some years since I last saw Jocelyne and it appears she hasn't changed. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family and friends of Jocelyne Couture-Nowak,

Canada has lost an amazing role model!

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I can’t possibly imagine what you may be feeling,
I can only hope that in time your pain will subside a little and that your memories of Jocelyne will eventually bring a smile to your faces. Until then, be as kind to yourselves as you would be to anyone else who has suffered such a heartbreaking loss. Rest now, grieve now, and allow those who know you and love you do what they can to help you through this tragic time.

My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you.

A teacher like you effects eternity, and no one knows where your influence stops. Death cannot extinguished that influence which only deepens and edifies even long after this tragedy is buried with the passage of time. You have led a life of selfless dedication and service to humanity, and a your reward is sure.

I am sooo sorry about your senseless loss. Please try and take some comfort in knowing that the state of Virginia.. and the world for that matter... grieves with you. God Bless.
April 19, 2007
Dear Jocelyne Couture-Nowak was a joy and an inspiration! I had the honour of being her classmate and friend in the late 1980's at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. She and I were both mature students at the time, both studying to be French teachers. She was so warm, intelligent and full of life!
Her positive energy and quick smile were contagious.

When she invited me to the apartment she shared with her little girl, Francine, it was so evident that she adored her little one and was determined to make a better life for her. I'll never forget sitting in her modest kitchen that afternoon, getting to know one another, sharing bits of our life stories while munching on her delicious, homemade sunflower seed granola bars. (Naturally, she shared her recipe with me before I left!)

Fate would have us sharing a meal again, this time at the Engine Room, a popular eating establishment in Truro. Sitting alone near our table was an Nova Scotia Agricultural College professor and acquaintance of mine. When he spotted us, he smiled his charming smile our way and I invited him to join us. When I introduced him to Jocelyne, the ease of their conversation and immediate warmth towards each other made it obvious to me that this would not be their last meeting.

Shortly afterwards, I graduated college and moved away to teach. Although our paths went separate ways, it came as no surprise to me when I heard that Jocelyne and Jerzy had gotten married. I was very happy to hear the news and felt glad to have played a small part in their initial acquaintance. It was a love that was simply meant to be.

As time went on, I married and had a son of my own. With the passing away of my French Acadian father, my pride in my French heritage surfaced strongly and my husband and I decided to send our son to the local French school, École acadienne de Truro. In fact, I began teaching there.

After school on Tuesday of this past week, I asked I fellow teacher why the media vehicle was in our school parking lot. When she mentioned that someone in the Nowak family had been involved in the tragic events at Virginia Tech, I was in disbelief! How could it be?

As the news unfolded, my heart sank. Not my Jocelyne! I immediately searched for my college yearbooks to find her. There she was at the honours banquet, exactly how I had remembered her in 1989, beautiful... her signature long, dark hair falling over her shoulder, her glowing smile! It seems like yesterday.

The following day at school, I learned of how her legacy lives on in my own family's life. Little did I know that Jocelyne was one of the founding women who worked passionately before moving to Virginia to see that my son's French school became more than just a dream. Largely because of Jocelyne's efforts, my son is able to have what I was denied as a child living in a predominantly English community ... A living connection to his French Acadian roots...his French Acadian soul.

Merci, mon amie! Thank you! My French father thanks you!
Ta vie était un cadeau.
It is all very clear to me now.
The circle is complete.

To Jerzy and the girls,
Although it may seem so at this time, your loving wife and Maman has not left this place. Her beautiful spirit lives on in the many, many hearts and lives she touched. How honoured you must feel being so loved by one such as her!

As for me, I'm going to plant flowers in Jocelyne's honour at our little school and in my own garden... BIG ones! SUNNY ones! BEAUTIFUL flowers with LIFE-GIVING seeds to share with others! I think Jocelyne will approve...

May you be surrounded in love and find peace with the passing of time.
April 19, 2007
I am very sorry something like this could happen. Your friends in Salt Lake weep with you.
April 19, 2007
I was bless to have Jocelyne be taught by her. She was so kind and had such a livily personally. She is going to be missed by all

I am so sorry that you were taken so soon from your students, your friends, family, colleagues and loved ones but glad that you are now among the angels in Heaven.

And you are now in the most beautiful House of all, the Heaven of Our God!
For I was glad they said unto me, let us go into the House of God the Father Almighty where He will provide comfort and solace and dry every tear.

Please know all of your family are in my thoughts and prayers. If only it were possible to take this grief from you. May God "hug" you close to Him in the journey ahead; and may God's love center you.

Dear family, friends, colleagues, and students of Jocelyne Couture-Nowak,
As a professor of French language and literature, I can imagine the joy Jocelyne had teaching her classes and inspiring a love of the French language and culture in her students. Because I have spent many hours conducting classes much as she was doing on that fateful day, I can painfully imagine her and the class, busy in the positive activity of learning -- stopped short by a moment of terror which affected so many at Virginia Tech. She leaves such an aching void for family and friends -- and the community of French teachers and professors has lost a dynamic colleague. I am so sad, but want to let you know that I salute her life and her accomplishments.
April 19, 2007
Jocelyne touched the hearts of every single student she taught, she will forever be remembered for the remarkable women she was. Her old students from ECE in Truro send their love to the family.

I had Madame Couture-Nowak for just one semester of French. I was a Spanish major and she worked hard to "change my mind" and get me to take more classes with her. She always spoke to me as if I were fluent in French no matter that I had her for a beginners class and could barely string a sentence together. She will be missed in the Foreign Language halls and in my own heart.

This is a tragedy for all Americans. I know we are thousands of miles away, but we feel your grief and would take it from you if we could. Take one day at a time. It's not true that time will heal. I know that firsthand. But what will carry you is the grace of God and his love that he has for you. And, his strong hand that will gently lead and guide you each day if you trust him. Lean on him for he is strong as we our weak. We're praying for you all that you'll be strengthened and comforted with Gods peace.

My son Andrew and I will miss Jocelyne because she was a wonderful competitor in the swimming pool. She was always so excited to swim and compete. I vivdly will always remember the Commonwealth games when she won so many of those big heavy medals that she clanked when she walked. My son, a Division I college swimmer asked me to pass on his condolances also. He said that sometimes at the local swim meets that it would only be Jocelyne and he in the older groups. He always won, but she was always right there with a that big ole grin on her face. It was my honor to have known Jocelyne and I will miss her.

Virginia Tech Family,

"AS YOU TAKE
one step at a time,
HOLDING GOD’S HAND
And letting Him lead,
HE WILL GET YOU
Where you need
TO GO.”

Father God,
I don’t want to take one step without You. I reach up for Your hand and ask that You lead me in Your way. Thank You that no matter where I am right now… You will make a path from where I am to where I need to be, and You will lead me on it. I love that Your grace abounds to me in that way.

April 18, 2007

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I have said many good byes to those i know killed in Afghanistan. That i can almost understand. Jocelynes loss,on a campus, doing what she loved, teaching, is totally incomprehensible. I wept watching the news, i now weep more knowing it took someone who so selflessly gave of herself to help others. May God be with you and all who knew you as we come to understand why heaven neede you.The world has sustained a real loss, heaven is the only to gain.
God Guard Thee
