My Great Uncle meant so much to you but to me he was the last surviving member of the greatest generation in or family. I did not realize what the medal meant until later years, I just knew when he wore it he got a lot of attention. He was always late for every Christmas but the whole family was always so glad when he pulled up with my Aunt Alice. We all knew we would be in for a night of story's of the old days when he was growing up or of course the old war story's. Latter in life I realized what a special honor I had of having him as an Uncle and being graced with his presence in my sons life. He would go out to the ranch and sit mesmerized listening to his story's. He did teach my son how to shoot on one of his childhood guns and then in turn gave it to him, my son cherishes it! The memorial was very difficult for my family but the honor that I felt as we buried my Uncle was immense! I will never forget all the wonderful memories he shared with our family and I thank all of you for your wonderful messages and support!
I knew of you all my life but meeting you in person several years ago was a highlight of my life. You were my father's squadron leader at Pearl Harbor and his hero;the day we spent together you told me stories of my dad that I would never have known because he died in a Naval plane crash when I was 4. I thank you for being an amazing American, an exemplary man and a friend. I will miss you. God bless you John; your 6 is covered all the way home. John Finn Pinkerton

Thanks for your service .We warriors honor you.Semper Fi!
John Finn was the Grand Marshall at our Descanso (CA) Fair and Parade in July, 2002. It was my job to pick him up at his home, get him to the parade on time and home safely. I thought it would be a short day!!! He showed me around him home and told me several stories, then we headed for Descanso where he entertained everyone. When it came time to get in position for the parade, John pulled his Medal of Honor out of his pocket and said "ok, you do the honors'. My hands shook as I snapped it around his neck. Then to my great surprise he planted a kiss on me, saying that was the price of putting his medal on him!!! We both laughed so hard. After the parade, I was ready to take him back to his home but just about every man there wanted to shake his hand and listen to him. Well I picked him up at 9am and delivered back at 7pm! I was exhausted and he was still going strong. John was a remarkable man and pure delight! God Speed, John Finn
8 years ago I had to opportunity to talk on the phone to John Finn for over two hours. He was (and is) an amazing, funny, brave and most of all, humble man. Those two hours changed my life and I have never forgotten them! I know he is enjoying eternity with Alice right now. Be joyful that he is there holding her and no longer burdened by his earthly body!
Words cannot express how much my family and I appreciate what you did for our country. Thank you for your service. May you be having a great time in Heaven right now with all of our other Heroes. We are praying for your family and are so sorry for their loss.
i wish i could thank him for fighting for our country

Thank you, God, for men like Mr. Finn. I thank each man and woman who has put on the uniform, saluted God-Country and Flag and protected our values. My father said once, "My generation gave up everything when we were called. I lost many friends. But we did it for something we believed in. The only way you and your generation can respect our loss is not loosing what we gave you...freedom."
I am sorry you have passed away. Thank you for your Honorable Service. I wish there were more Americans like you in this country we love. God bless you Lt.
THANK YOU!! Those words just don't seem enough as not only are you a true war hero but you are also an amazing individual. Funny, honest, modest, friendly and with a memory like a steel trap. Our Salutes to you and your history. A pleasure to Have met you. SSG EDWARD J BICKEL(ret) and CARLA M BICKEL ( navy brat)
God Bless you and your family for the sacrifices that were made for this country and freedom around the world . You truly are a Hero.
I was honored to meet Jack Finn (at a gala event celebrating the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor) when he was almost 97 aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor. He was most engaging and clear-minded. I sat next to him at dinner and he told me of his Missouri ancestry, his family name being used by Mark Twain and his first-hand account of the attack on Kanoehe. He talked about his ranch near San Diego and uttered the words to me that we have all heard since, "I was just doing my job." If that was all it was, then I hope that the Almighty gives Jack Finn a job to do. He will not be disappointed.
Thank you Mr. Finn for your bravery and service to this country. May you Rest in Peace. My sincere condolences to your family from a PROUD Navy Mom of a HM2 Platoon Corpsman USN Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dear Mr. Finn,
It is because of men like you that make the United States of America as great as it is! You have truly earned your place in Heaven! May you have Eternal Peace at your last post.
I feel very fortunate to be part of your ceremony on June 3, 2010.
Rest in Peace John Finn and Thanks for maintaining the legacy of duty, honor, country.
To the Finn family I am so sorry for your loss. I loved your dad and mom. They were good friends with my parents and I remember the treasure that was your parents home. As a child I could not wait to visit and see what wonderful treasures I would discover in your dads vast collection, junk to some, treasures to me. I still have the old medal milk container your dad gave me when I said "Oh I love this", take it Mr. Finn said, he said that a lot. I remember the white horse your dad rescured from somewhere, no corral for this horse, he followed people around like a dog and even would come in the house where Miss Alice would shoo him out like it was no big deal, I was a city girl so this was the coolest thing in the world to me. So many stories of times at the house. He and my dad traded our 56 Stutabeger for old firebird convertable your dad had. I would bet that Stutabeger is still in the yard someplace. We took my cousins visiting from PA to the house one time, we found a snake that my younger cousin wanted to take with him but we didn't have anything to put it in, your dad told him to just put it on the back seat of the car and he would'nt go anywhere. Well the next 3 hours at your dads was spent watching them take the seats out of the car to try and find the snake before my Aunt found out. The snake was never found and it's a family secret to this day from my dads sister. So many stories and so many wonderful memories. I knew your dad as just this great guy that lived in the back country and did not become aware of his bravery and service to our country until I was older and actually saw him on a PBS special. Then I heard the story of Pearl Harbor which I talked to your dad about next time I saw him and he totally played it down. I got the same "I was just doing my job" that he has told so many others. He was a great man with a huge heart and love of our great country. I was lucky to have known both he and your mom and will remember them always. The world will be little sadder place without our oldest Medal of Valor patriot.
With great sympathy and fondness
Semper Fidelis Mr. Finn. It is because of heros like you that made me want to serve my country. You will be greatly missed.
Indeed, God has blessed America with such as John W. Finn. From a daughter of Roy T. White, USN, Corpman, 1st Marine Division, Guadalcanal survivor:

Crossing the Bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

I HAD TO GO AWAY
I had to go away.
I'm sorry you couldn't come with me.
But on earth is where you shall stay.
Please do not be sad.
Instead laugh and be glad.
I'm in a beautiful place, such a beautiful place.
I know you wont see me for a while.
But you will hear from me.
I will be the wind that will chill you on a hot summer day.
I will be the sun that will warm you when it's cold.
Listen to the birds sing, I will be saying, "I love you" in their song.
I know you can't touch me.
But you will feel me.
Because I will be inside of you giving you life on the days you feel like you can't go on anymore.
Please I beg of you, go on, live your life as I lived mine.
Always remember we will be together again.
I will be patiently waiting for you on that day.
When you will join me in this beautiful place.
Until then may God bless you with his almighty grace.

What a great American. Thank you John Finn. Enjoy eternal peace.
Thank you for allowing us to leave our condolences. John never got tired of giving his time to the Navy and always welcomed the endless procession of Sailors showing up on his doorstep wanting to meet a real, live American Hero. I was one of the privileged few that got to meet John during the CPO transition season. I sat in awe for hours listening to his funny stories while our Selectees volunteered their time to maintain his home. It was a great opportunity to meet an amazing man and even at 100, he was "a real kick in the pants" as he would say. John will be sorely missed. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Sir.
