There was no other voice like Johnny's. I had the privilege of attending his shows in Atlantic City NJ and Wildwood NJ. My husband and I would always make sure to go when in the area. He sang a lot about angels and now he is one among them.Even after a show he would take the time to sign a CD which we treasure.I can tell by his children he was a wonderful Father and Husband . He was blessed with a voice and a wonderful family and I know they we blessed by him. Thank You for letting me enjoy his gift. I cant believe its been almost 5 years that his voice was silenced on stage. May the Lord bless your family as you remember him

When I was a child of 13 my time was often spent in torment at the hands of an abusive stepfather. The self titled "Brooklyn Bridge" LP was amongst a handful of vinyl records I had access to, I would often escape into the dramatic music and lyrics of "Welcome Me Love", Blessed Is The Rain, Free As The Wind and the entire work of art that is that LP. To this day it remains a favorite LP of mine. Music has this way of saving ones self respect and adding a light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge. The world is fortunate to have your legacy in music. For as long as I shall live I will always be a fan.

November 04, 2013
Rest in Peace Johnny. Your amazing voice was a part of many of our great experiences growing up and still triggers memories of when we were young.
October 14, 2013
Your music will live on, but you will be missed! I grew up listening to the Crests, then the BB, and what a voice! I just listened to some oldies on Youtube, bringing back memories. One of the best Tenors! I saw one of the last concerts at Woodbridge, NJ, summer concerts.
October 07, 2013
A wonderful gentleman and an incredible voice to lose, wishing he had recorded more tunes! First saw him as a high school student when I took a bus trip from Toronto to NYC, the purpose of the trip. Afterwards I saw him on Long Island where most the people were much older, and the next time was in Rochester NY where it was a University crowd and I was the old one. Was fortunate to see him a few other times, but distance and circumstances were a prevention. To describe his voice maybe words such as incredible, awesome, professional, unique are a start. Difficult to stop talking, thinking about the Maestro!!!!
September 08, 2013
Have listened to this man with a golden voice since I was a little girl and was lucky enough to see him at Mohegan Sun ..He is singing in another place now and enriching the heavens
August 16, 2013
I've only started to listen to Mr. Maestro's music recently. I'm only 43 and although I was exposed to his music from The Crests through my dad when I was a young boy, I never really knew of Johnny Maestro. I only knew the songs as The Crests. Within the last few months, I have been listening to my Oldies playlist on my iPod and always found myself replaying songs by The Crests as the singer's voice was incredible. I decided to do some Google searching and started to find out about Mr. Maestro. I have done a lot of research within the last few months and have accumulated much information about him and his songs. Only learning about his death recently really upset me. Not only do I feel horrible for his family, but I feel cheated as I missed out on such a wonderful singer and person. I used to (and still do) watch the PBS Doo Wop specials and although I'm sure I had seen Mr. Maestro performing, it just never really clicked as to who he was. I would watch the specials and always say, I have to get to one of those Doo Wop concerts. Today, listening to his music I think if I had just done some research earlier, I may have been blessed to attend one of his Brooklyn Bridge or Doo Wop concerts and seen a real genius at work. At least Johnny's memory isn't fading as I can attest to. He just obtained a new fan in me and I'm sure new fans are popping up every day. As I continue to listen to more and more of his songs I say, "I remember that song when I was young, I didn't know Johnny Maestro sang that." A perfect example is "Welcome Me Love" I heard it last night watching a Brooklyn Bridge DVD and was like wow, he sang that? Again, it saddens me not to have been able to enjoy this man's voice while I knew it was him. What a loss for the music world. All I know is he will always be remembered and his music will never disappear.
August 13, 2013
I was heart broken to hear of his passing. His voice was incredible, like others say "the voice of an angel."
August 08, 2013
Johnny had the voice of an angel. He is with God and all the angels now , and they are "listening in". He will be missed but his voice and music lives on

I was deeply saddened to learn that Johnny Maestro had passed away. Shocked actually. All I can say is he may be gone but he will never be forgotten. He left a beautiful legacy behind, his music. Rather than thinking on his loss, we reflect on the man he was and to celebrate his life. I loved him just like many have loved him and his music. You are now resting in peace awaiting the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To his wife, Grace, and to his children I send my deepest of condolences to you all and may God Bless you all.

I am so very saddened to read about Johnny's death! I remember seeing him at Palisades Park, NJ when I was 11 yrs old (Artie was the drummer, he gave me a signed drum stick)thats when I fell in love with his voice! That same year my brother's band played along with Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge at Dickinson HS Senior Prom in Jersey City, NJ. My most recent memory of Johnny was in NJ when they played at what is now known as BadaBing the strip club on the Soprano's in Rutherford,NJ. We got to meet Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge, I was in heaven! What a loss to the world without your heavenly voice!!! The first time I heard Johnny was on a 45 single - Welcome Me Love. I played that song until I wore it out. I was 11 years old then. Over the years, I had come to appreciate what an incredibly gifted performer he was. Watching those performances on PBS left me mesmerized by his talent. A beautiful voice, a beautiful soul. In my opinion, the world lost the greatest singer of all time when Johnny was called. His smile touched my heart, his music will live on for always. Thank you Johnny for your everlasting gift.
September 16, 2012

January 30, 2012
As with many of our generation, Johnny's music helped me to cope with my difficult teenage years, growing up in the late 50's - early 60's. Johnny's beautiful voice reached into my heart and laid it on the table. He elevated my soul. His music was so powerful to me that sometimes his melodies would run through my mind all day and night, and I would often sing them to my dates --sometimes that actually worked in my favor! There would be no one who could fill his shoes. As the rock and roll era fades into history along with its great performers and those who loved them, we can only say: thanks Johnny. If there is a heaven, I hope I meet you someday up there.
Sincerely,
Stan Gornish

Johnny, you gave us the gift of your wonderful voice for decades and we thank you. I heard you today on the radio and thought of you, remembering my one time of seeing you live. My dear friend Lisa Lijoi-Spielmann took me along to see you in long Beach at the Collectibles Convention Awards dinner in 1993 and it was one of the greatest gifts anyone has every given me. You sang right to the 2 of us and gave us such a special memory to share. On my sixteenth birthday, my parents called in a request to my fave radio sation for "16 Candles" and had a boquet of 16 stems of specially grown giant hot-house Sweet Peas delivered to me at school. Your music will keep you alive forever and may your loved ones, family & friends know how much the gift of your wonderful voice meant to people of all ages. Via Con Dios.

Dearest Johnny:
I can't believe that it has been one year since you went to be with the other Angels. I have been listening to your music since I was a kid. My brother, Kevin, and I would get into clubs (before we were even old enough) in Jersey City and Hoboken, just to see you and the Brooklyn Bridge. I listen to your music all of the time, but not being able to see you at concerts anymore is just too sad. I know that you are in heaven singing for my brother, Kevin, and I have to admit that I am a little jealous of that. To see you once a year was not enough for me. I just could not get enough of you. When you were in New Jersey, My husband and I pretty much went to every concert. However, sadly, I did not get to see you last year when I purchased tickets for a show on April 14th, in Trenton, NJ, for my husband's birthday, (it was really for me) and you passed away in March. The event turned out to be a Tribute to you and it was very special, but too sad that you were not there. It will never be the same. I didn't know that you were sick until just weeks before you passed. When I found out, I was in shock. My husband took me all over to see you because he knew, after him, that you and the Brooklyn Bridge were my other love. My deepest sympathy to the Mastrangelo family and the Brooklyn Bridge. I am so sorry for your loss. Johnny Maestro, you will always have a place in my heart and you will never walk alone. Until we meet again.
March 13, 2011
Without a doubt, one of the most memorable moments in music history that I have ever witnessed is Johnny Maestro performing "Sixteen Candles" and "The Worst That Could Happen" on a PBS Doo-Wop special. Forever and always - Thank you Johnny Maestro and Thank you PBS.
March 12, 2011
Johnny, I love you with the Crest, I love you with the Brooklyn Bridge. I just learn of your passing last night while watching PSB and heard you were no longer with us. I was hoping one day to see you perform with the Crest, singing "Step by Step". Now you can really sing to those Angels.

To the Mastrangelo Family: May your hearts be filled with the wonderful memories of the joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

May the love of Friends and Family carry you through your grief of this great loss to all of us.
March 08, 2011
Some people come into your life for a reason, a season or a life time. You came into mine for a season in 1972 I had the pleasure of being one of those people that you had touched their life. I have never forgotten you - stay strong in your journey
March 07, 2011
Another angel is now singing in Heaven. The music must be beautiful as you sing along with others we have lost in the music world. Your music will go on and on as we golden oldies will never let it die.
March 04, 2011
MR. MAESTRO,
YOU WERE ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS AND SONG WRITERS OF ALL TIMES. YOUR MUSIC WAS PURE AND MEANINGFUL. EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT KNOW YOU, I AM CONVINCED YOU WERE A GREAT MAN.
January 01, 2011
You are sadly missed. Your music will live on and on and you will never be forgotten.

It's Christmas season 2010--and listening to the Bridge's "Peace on Earth" and Christmas cd is a mixed experience--since Johnny is gone. But the vocal beauties of the group live on.

In my years as a oldies DJ on the original oldies station in the USA (WLNG-FM) in Sag Harbor New York i must have stated at least a 100 times that in my opinion Johnny had the best voice in rock and roll history. Also had the pleasure of working on stage with Johnny and the Bridge many times as well as being in the spot the Bridge was formed back in the 60s. This talent will be greatly missed by those of us that love the sound of the 50s and sixties. Rest in peace my friend. As long as good music is played anywhere your voice will live on.

I just found out that Johnny had passed and I am shocked and devasted! I had seen Johnny ina concert but am truly sad that I never got to meet him or shake his hand and give him a big hug! My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. I am truly crushed. I have been following Johnny's and his career and his music since I was 15 years old. I am in my sixties now and am going to find it hard without him. I want to let his band and singing members know that I grieve for them and hopfully u guys can group up somehow and bring Johnny's music back to the concert stage. You guys are so musically talented please think about this. I always loved the "Jersey Guys". You guys are really handome as well as talented. Please know wthat I will miss all of u. Please comeback somehow! I was planning on moving back to the Easat Coast from Arizona to catch one of your concerts, but Johnny had a different calling. I am still moving back to Boston in November and I hope that I get some good news about u guys making a comeback!! We fans need to hear his music not only on CD's but also need to see u guys perform and keep the music going.

John's tribute/memorial service was wonderful! Thanks go out to his family, The Brooklyn Bridge and his friends for giving us a chance to honor his life with you! It clearly demonstrated how he shared his heart, soul and goodness with not only his family and friends, but also individuals that simply touched his heart! He was able to pass his goodness on to his fans through the gift of his angelic voice. What a precious gift he gave all of us! It is my hope that we cherish what he gave us! May we allow his life to act as a reminder to share our hearts, soul and goodness within our own individual lives, through whatever gifts each of us possess. My wish is for his family, friends and loved ones to find peace through his songs and the memories of his beautiful life...always! May we "never walk alone".

RIP JOHNNY
April 15, 2010
It's hard to think that such an angelic voice has left us. Johnny's songs and voice was a big part of my life from my early teenage years up to my present age of 61.
I was just a young man that couldn't afford a ticket to see Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge while on vacation in Virginia Beach, so I got a blanket and listened to him from a distance on the beach. I vowed never to miss him again. On one of his last visits to Pittsburgh, I made sure that I had front row seats and had a chance to meet him. The wait was well worth it. Johnny was one of a very few preformers that sounded better in person than on recording.
His memory and his one of a kind voice will live on for future generations to enjoy through his music.
My sincere sympathies to his family and friends.
Sincerely,
Ed, a dedicated fan from Pittsburgh.

Of course my parents were not aware of this, until the albums arrived. I got to keep only 1 record, as the others were returned..I kept Johnny's. My love affair began with that one album. April 09, 2010
I will miss you very much, Johnny Maestro! When I heard about your death I immediately thought of the song "I Want To See Heaven" on your Brooklyn Bridge CD of Inspirational Songs. The angels now have a truly wonderful voice in the choir. I have listened to that marvelous, strong voice of yours since I was young (The Angels Listened In; 16 Candles; Step By Step, etc.). I stiil listen to your songs. They're timeless and full of many memories through the decades. Thank you for sharing your fantastic voice (still strong in your later years). Again, I will miss you dearly.

April 04, 2010
Our hearts go out to Johnny's family and the members of the Bridge. He was truly a wonderful singer, fantastic entertainer, but more importantly, a real gentleman. My wife and I would travel from Virginia each year that Johnny and the Bridge sang at Lead East in Parsippany or at another UGHA concert in North Jersey and each year we were more in awe of his talent and especially down to earth personality. I remember especially one year at Lead East there was a sound problem at Johnny's Sunday night concert that required the Bridge to pause their show for about 1/2 hour after they had been playing for about 20 minutes. Instead of going back to the dressing room and relaxing, Johnny came off the stage and sat with my wife and I and a few others and talked with us for 15 or 20 minutes like we were old friends from the neighborhood. I never got over that!! He never was conceited nor did he put on the airs of a "prima donna" entertainer. He was always a 'real" person who truly loved his work and cared for the people who came to hear his concerts.
God bless you, Johnny! You've left a void in the lives of so many people but you've also left us with some of the best memories!
April 04, 2010

For Johnny...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I grew up listening to Johnny's music. Some people don't realize how much music, especially from a voice like Johnny's, can make a person feel better and make the world's problems seem smaller. I never knew him, but it still hurts to see that he is gone. Clay Hesser

I was driving along listening to 101.1 when I heard the news; I was stunned. I could barely see the road because I was crying so hard. I pulled over and called my husband,"did you hear what happened" I cried. "Johnny Maestro died". Without missing a beat my husband said "Oh, I am so sorry". Thirty five years of marriage and he knows that I loved Johnny Maestro first. I was 13 when I first heard Sixteen Candles, and I couldn't wait to dance to it at my sweet 16th. birthday party. I've stayed a Johnny Maestro fan and I was lucky to see him perform a few times. That voice !! To me as good as Sinatra. And it will never leave my heart. I'm grateful to have been born in his lifetime. He gave so much joy. May God bless you Johnny and thank you.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

We have been fans of John and the Bridge for almost as long as John has been singing. We followed him through the good and lean times both in New York, and after we moved to Connecticut attended the many shows they performed here. We were very fortunate to have been at the last show John performed at Mohegan Sun arena. He passed away on my birthday and I will never forget him. May he rest in peace in rock and roll heaven. Our condolences to Grace, his family and to Les, Fred, Jimmy, Lou, Marty and everyone involved with the Brooklyn Bridge.

You have been a part of my life since I was little. I saved my allowance to buy "The Worst that Could Happen" on a 45. Now that I'm quite a bit older, your music is on my ipod that I listen to everyday before work and I feel 40 years younger when I hear your voice. Thank you for the wonderful memories and looking forward to seeing you in concert again on God's grand stage. My prayers are with you and your family.

We have enjoyed his music forever, but more so when we moved to Fl. accros the street from the parents of drummer from the Brooklyn Bridge who took us to a back stage party to meet Johnny and the rest of the Brooklyn Bridge. What an experience. Our sympathy goes out to the whole group and especially to his family. He was very talented. Johnny you will be missed by all the music world and your fans. Rest in peace.

March 27, 2010
My hubbys grandaughter, Amanda, was raised on Johns music and she loved him so much. Amanda was only 3 years old and running around the house singing his songs. I raised her right, and to love the right music! I had always promised her, that I would take her to see him, and that when I did, I would give her some roses to give to him.
Well, Penny and Randy were getting married in Pennsylvania, and I was invited and told Amanda that she was going to go to a wedding.
That morning, I dressed her, did her hair, and on our way we went. While on the road, I whispered to my husband, that we had to stop somewhere and get some roses. We found a spot, I ran in and got them, and placed them into the trunk of the car.
When we sat in the pew of the church, we placed Amanda between us and my hubby just recorded the event. Well, when Amanda saw Johnny walking Penny down the aisle, she grabbed me and said, "Hide me Lucy, don't let him see me. It's Johnny, please don't let him see me!" We have that all on tape, and when the ceremony was over, we took her into the lobby of the church and I introduced
her to John.
He was so wonderful to her. He asked her what her favorite song was, and she just said, "Step Step", which meant "Step By Step". He told her that he would sing that song just for her. In between the wedding and the concert to follow, we all went to Penny and Randys to relax before the concert. This is a photo of Amanda with John, just chilling out. Oh, and by-the-way, yes, she did present Johnny with a bouquet of roses.
At the concert that evening, Fred reminded Johnny to dedicate the next sond to Amanda, which she went into such a delightful frenzy at him remembering her, it was too precious for words. Just one of many stories about how wonderful a man he is. xoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Rest in peace, proud NY son,Johnny Maestro. My fondest memory.. I had booked the Brooklyn Bridge to perform at an outdoor corporate event in L.I,July of 1999. The rain would not stop that evening. Johnny and his band graciously waited with us under cover of umbrellas in the beach picnic area. Once it was clear the rain was not stopping, Johnny spontaneously jumped up on a picnic table and belted out 5 or 6 beautiful a cappella numbers, with his boys in perfect harmony. The crowd's applause said it all. Johnny was an absolute gentleman, friendly and down to earth. I will never forget his talent and grace.
March 27, 2010

To the entire Maestro Family, The Boys in the band, friends and fans,
I sit with a very heavy heart at the loss of OUR Johnny. A more gentle man, I have yet to meet in my life and doubt I ever will. John loved his family, his music, his fans and his friends. His love was endless, and although I will miss him tremendously, I am forever thankful that he no longer suffers from his ailment, and know that tonight and forever more, there will be one hell of a concert in Heaven, with the angels listening in, with some of the most precious voices that went prior to him.
I will treasure his friendship, his smile, his heart and most of all will never allow his memory to be forgotten. R.I.P. John. Grace, know that you will never walk alone, for John will always be by your side. He loves you so.

Johnny Maestro's "Sixteen Candles" was, in my opinion, one of the ten best recordings that came out of the fifties. It's hard to explain what effect it had on a 14 or 15 year old teenager at the time. It is nice to know that he was also a gentleman. May he rest in peace as he takes his place with that rock n roll band in Heaven.
March 26, 2010

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Johnny was better than great. He was the standard that all singers would aspire to come close to. Some fighters that were champs stayed in the fight game to long and eventualy became former defeated champs. Johnny Maestro remained a champ from the first time I met him, in the offices that we once shared at Coed Records to the time we had breakfast together at The Vocal Group Hall of Fame. He never lost that wonderful voice. He had it right up to the end of his last performance. He was and will always be, the master, the singer's singer and my friend.

Part of my youth died today when I read of Johnnys passing. He had the voice of an angel. So many memories of him - first with The Crests, and of course, The Brooklyn Bridge. I don't think there is one song of his that I don't own. I feel such pain in my heart knowing he is no longer with us. He brought so much joy to my childhood and to my adulthood. No voice will ever compare to that of Johnnys. Rest in peace. Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathies to Johnny's family and the members of his band. We saw a great performance by Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge at Club Bene', Morgan, NJ. During the show,a man in the audience yelled, "Johnny You're The Best", I agree.
March 26, 2010
I just learned of Johnny passing yesterday while listening to Lou Costello, the midday fellow on Cruisin'92.1 in Vineland, NJ. I knew he had been ill and was looking forward to seeing him perform again when he recovered. But he's now performing in "Rock "N Rpll Heaven" with some of the greats who passed on before him. I can imagine that is an amazing concert going on there. I remeber playing "169 Candles" at my sweet 16 birthday party. Although he will truly be missed, his songs will remain as a legacy.
March 26, 2010

MY HEART IS BROKEN!
I've done dozens of shows with the Brooklyn Bridge over the years and I can only describe Johnny's shows and spectacular vocal talent as "Rock & Roll Opera" I was at one of his very last shows at the Parker Playhouse in Ft Lauderdale Just a few weeks ago and spoke with him backstage. He told the audience that he just had a liver infection and that he would be o.k. soon. He looked very frail but his voice was as powerful as ever. To Johnny's family, Les and the rest of the band, to my good friend Smitty the sound engineer and my buddy Surf Club DJ Jerry Demeo, I feel you pain today.

Sixteen Candles oh what a song. I loved all of your music. All of your wonderful music will never be forgotten just like you. God Bless you and you family.

I met Johnny and the band on a cruise three years ago. The band did several performances during the cruise, all of which were outstanding. I was amazed at how pure Johnny's voice still sounded after all these years. He seemed to be a shy man off stage; but, when he was on stage, one could feel the magic. He was a very special talent. It was obvious that he, his family, and his band were very close. They were so thoughtful and respectful of one another. Besides his wonderful voice, these are the things that stood out for me on that cruise. Thanks for blessing us with your presence, Johnny. You will be missed by thousands; but, you'll never walk alone.
March 26, 2010

JOHNNY MAESTRO may have passed away, but he has left us with a legacy to cherish...he had a voice of extraordinary beauty and power that moved all who heard him. For more than a half century, both on stage and on record, he gave his all to his music and his fans, and his recordings are a testament to his awesome talent. As a teenager in the 50's, he led one of the first fully integrated singing groups and opened a new world of music to the public. He is truly one of the giants. He will be sorely missed, but his music will never be forgotten. May the Lord usher him into the Heavenly choir while the purity of his soaring tenor continues to remind us all we will "Never Walk Alone". Bless all those who love him and may his spirit be with them.
March 25, 2010

He was always a gentlemen and always a class act. Thanks for the great times, you will be missed dearly.

I was 18 when I first saw The Brooklyn Bridge -they did a show at my college...after which, the entire band headed to Oneonta and I ran into them there... I went over to their table and explained how much I enjoyed them and Johnny asked me to sit with them...He definitely WAS a class act and even though that meeting was 40 years ago, it remains as one of the most special moments of my life...Johnny had one of those voices that you just fell in love with... and now I am sure he is singing with the Angels.... I never missed a chance to see them perform even on those PBS shows on TV... Johnny you will be missed by ANYONE who has ever heard you sing...I am so blessed that I got the opportunity to meet you and the band personally... Thank you for that bright and shining moment in my life...

God saw he was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arm around him and whispered "Come with me." With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him face away, although we loved him dearly we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating hard, working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Johnny you are the best.

My deepest sympathy to Johnny's family and friends. I've enjoyed his performances at outdoor concerts in northern NJ and on PBS TV. His rendition of the beautiful Ave Maria has left me misty eyed, listening to Sunday morning radio on WGHT. He was a gifted musical treasure and will be missed.

With love and prayers,
