I'll neaver forget the Johnny Otis Show coming thru my little pink radio next to my bed. He set a standard that no D.J. to this day has ever achieved. I remember the night he announce he, and his wife, were going to have a baby, their boy, who years and years later I saw on the David Letterman Show playing with Paul Schaffer. Because of Johnny Otis I know true rock and roll and R&B and teach my grand children. Oh! his band, he played for the best and I saw him here in San Diego on his Hand Jive tour, I got to dance to Johnny Otis. It wasen't our mothers world war two music, it was ours, ours alone, our parents did'nt understand, it was our beat, our music. I praY for the family, and forever will be proud that I knew Johnny Otis (a california man!)
Thank you GOD !
A laugh that could fill any room, the same joy in catching a bluegill as in being nominated for a Grammy, always up for any adventure as long as a few buddies could go along, pure delight in being on both the giving and receiving end of practical jokes, a tireless fighter for the underdog (in the tiniest of towns or the national scene), a love for the ages in Phyllis, a late night caller whose thoughts, jokes and news of figuring out just the right note...was welcome at any and all hours. Greek soup, Chinese lunches with fortune cookie instructions that were followed to the letter, writing music with you & Frank at the grand piano in your living room, fishing with Clarence and Bait Boy...sharing a mike on Saturday mornings...thanks for every sparkling, happy, shiny moment. I won't ever think of you without smiling and you'll always be in my heart. Your world was a WONDERFUL place!
Good-bye Hawk, you will always be remembered by all of us who ever performed with you. You weren't just a friend you were like a dad to all the OTISETTES, I was only 18yrs old right out of High School and the first Otisette" to start the whole group off. It was such an honor working with a wonderful person such as yourself. You will always be in my heart and mind and never will I forget what you taught me. Thank you for being you!
With our deepest condolences.
John 11: 1-44
He made a contribution to American music, and by extension, to global music, that is unique and so very beautiful. An original and a visionary. My condolences to his whole family. I feel so fortunate to live in a time and place that allows me to enjoy his extraordinary contribution. Some people leave a legacy that cannot be matched and he is one such. Thank you, Mr. Otis, and may our gratitude and love reach you.

Man............we stayed up late at night to watch the Johnny Otis Show
I was about 10 or 11 yrs. old, but soon fall asleep.....I'm now 61 yrs. old. Bro. Johnny Otis was a Tops during his time. He will be deeply missed by all that knew Him.
"Peace & Blessings" Wayne Wilson (Riverside,CA)
Our love and prayers go out to Johnnie and his wonderful family. He really was a talented and creative person.I still remember his church serman about," being too picky" (!) He changed Sebastopol,Ca. which really needed it. But most of all he changed music by helping so many incredible music people become known to us all. God Bless.Joan,Sami, Chris and Noah McMillan
hey Johnny, this is Linda Hall-Fulcher, one of your singers back in the day, 78-1983. I will truly miss your humor and your jokes and all of us singing, you was a great guy, and you will be truly missed, R. I. p. my friend.
May his soul rest in peace. God bless his family. Thank you.
Johnny, we will miss you very much, and will never forget all of the concerts you allowed us to be a part of. We pray that you family will be blessed by your beautiful memories for many years to come. Thanks for the time we had together......Cleve Duncan, The Penguins
I met the great Johnny Otis while he was appearing in Detroit back in the ninties.Between discussion about his love of Detroit talent and about my interest in tasting the fruit of his vinyards,I remember a great and remarkable man who traversed every definition,he was a spiritual human being. He was the man behind the scenes who gave america it's soul. We will hold him in our hearts forever.
Thank you for coming into our living room each week, allowing a little Black girl to realize that it was possible for Black Talent to be showcased on early television. Thank you for the music that my mama and daddy danced to and the joy it gave us as kids. Thank you for being a Black man in a time when it was not popular....May God bless....
I am truly saddened by Mr. Otis' passing. I had the opportunity to correspond with him back in the 90s. He was a gentleman and a class act. I am consoled by knowing that his legacy will live on together. How ironic that he and one he discovered, Etta James, transcend to the next life close to the same time. Johnny Oits, you have left us with a legacy that will always be a permanent part of the history of Rhythm & Blues. Thank you for all you did.
Frank Johnson, PhD (Philadelphia, PA)

When I returned to Concord, Calif. in 1990, I spent my Sat. mornings listening to the Johnny Otis Show on radio. How I loved that R&B music; the guests he had on; his memories of his career and then came his festivals. What fun; what a learning experience! I'm forever grateful to Johnny and to Etta! God bless each of your families!

Hey Johnny, Linda Hall-Fulcher we are going to miss you,Condolences to the family, Phyllis I am sending my prayers to you and family, Rest In Peace Johnny.
As a white teenager growing up in L.A. in the 50's listening to Johnny Otis on KFOX and then going to the live TV shows at KTLA introduced me to the the music that I knew was resonating with my soul. He was also a model of "crossing the color line" in the right direction before the rest of the country understood where it's true musical heritage lay. That continued to be a model for me in my political and social relationships and personal identity. Now I even have a Chicano "little Willie" godson of my own that I am teaching to do the hand jive. The "circle will not be unbroken bye and bye." Thank you, Johnny and loving wishes to his family at this time of loss.
My most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the Otis Family. As a young man I listen to his music with reverence. What a star.Later on I loved his R&B show out of the Bay Area.Rest in peace and God bless.
Johnny, Loved you from the beginning of your career as I do today. Your music career effected so many people and as one of those people, I will never forget you and your contribution in music to my life. May God make you one of His Angels and watch over and Bless your family through this trying time. Love you and may you rest in peace.
Sorry to hear of Johnny passing may the God of all comfort bring comfort to the family at this time of great sorrow.
Mrs. Otis, Janice, Laura, Shuggie, Nicky and the rest of the Otis family. - Mr. Otis made a huge impact on the world as a singer, musician, bandleader, author, cook, songwriter, producer, TV/radio show host, record producer, A&R man/talent scout and minister of the gospel. -- We know that he loved his family deeply and pray that love, your faith and many memories keep you warm at this time. Thank you for sharing him with us. You and yours will remain in my family's thoughts and prayers.
Sorry to hear the news about Johnny's passing. I used to catch his show at the Powerhouse Brew Company each Saturday morning in Sebastopol California when I lived in Santa Rosa CA on KPFA. Great musician who passed along terrific rock and roll stories and he was very political in nature (in a good way). Interesting, well rounded man to say the least. He had a great deal of depth to him and served as a mentor to many in and out of the music industry. Johnny certainly made the world a better place and he will be greatly missed. He made an everlasting impression on me.
WE ARE SENDING OUR PRAYERS,LOVE,&CONDOLENCES TO THE OTIS FAMILY,FRIENDS,FANS,&ALL WHO KNEW MR. OTIS.
Few people change the world for the better in the manner that Johnny Otis did. Thank you Johnny.
My thoughts and prayers are with Johnny's family and friends. I was fortunate to have lived around the corner from his deli/club in Sebastopol and enjoyed the wonderful music and joy he brought to all of us. During his stay in our town, he truly became a friend of Sebastopol and its residents. May you rest in peace, Johnny, knowing that you touched the lives of many throughout the world and made it a better place to live.
I wish to express my condolences to the family. I know that your loss is great. May you find comfort from the God of all comfort who helps us to cope with our grief. It can be so hard to face each day without your loved one, but the love of family and friends can carry you through.
it's amazing that Johnny Otis and Etta James, who were contemporaries and collaborators exited at the same time...
I listened to Johnny on KFOX in Long Beach. My brother Jim worked there and was Johnny's announcer on a local L.A. TV show. I think it was on KTLA. My other brother Arnie set up his in house studio for broadcasting. Johnny was always COOL.
It is always great to see talent used to help others without boundaries. Johnny will be missed but not forgotten. This is what the Bible encourages that we help your fellow man. God and his word will heal your family during this time. 1 PETER 5:10
G.R. Park Forest,IL
What an extraordinary person Johnny was. Thank you for this great information. I never knew all these wonderful things about him.
What a fantastic career and what a life!
Johnny Veli-otes...as the Greeks would say; May his memory be eternal!
Thank you for many hours of great music while working overtime on Saturday mornings!!!
I wish to express my condolences to the Otis family. And especially Phyllis. John Sr. was a very talented man and leaves behind some big shoes to fill. His contributions to American modern music is well noted. On a personal note: One of my greatest thrills was sitting in his living room, playing his drums while jamming with my old school buddy, Shuggie Otis on guitar. And when Shuggie came back from his father's bedroom and said, "my father said you're beating the mess out of them drums!" I got worried. But, no . . .it turned out to be a compliment. Thanks Johnny.
To the the family of Johnny Otis - May God give you peace and comfort through his word and the Lord Jesus Christ during this time of sorrow, I know that he will be missed by many.
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Otis as a child when my uncle, who was a tailor in south central Los Angeles brought him over to meet the family. I remember his presence as being warm and friendly.
The world has lost a great man and may his soul rest in peace forever.
Rest in peace Johnny. You and Etta are together again. God bless you both.
To the family of the late Johnny Otis may the grace of God cover you all he was just waiting own the master to call him home.Johnny Otis is performing in heaven ,may the almighty God give your family peace ,and may your memories will live own through your music.Johnny you and Mrs .Etta James are during your final performance its with the lord.Sleep own Johnny Otis.
I am sorry for your loss. May the Father of tender mercies be your source of comfort during this difficult time in your lives.
Johnny Otis was a man of many talents. You are now in heaven with many of your friends.
They haven't invented the adjective to describe this man. Musician, poet, playwrite, preacher, visual artist, producer, sculptor, pigeon fancier, humanitarian...(and that's not the half of it). We haven't seen his like since da Vinci and Michaelangelo, and we were all so lucky to know him.
Hello Johnny! I haven't seen you since i was a little girl and you came to my house with my sister (your backup singer Sugar and Stoney! The Otisettes !) I got a big kick out sitting in your lap and playing with your mustache and long black hair!! You were the kindest man I'd ever met. You gave our neighborhood was a buzz when you came around! I 'm sad that you have gone on to glory! You are now among the best and alot of friends so I know that concert is really jammin' right now that Etta has joined in!! God Bless you Johhny Otis R.I.P.!!
Growing up in Watts in the Jordan Downs Projects in the 1950's, you could hear the Johnny Otis Show playing on almost every TV as you walked through the projects. My parent gave me a 6th grade graduation party and we had 'WILLIE AND THE HAND JIVE' rockin'. On summer nights we would put the record player on the porch and we would have a fifty-foot dance line of grownups and kids doing the hand jive. I am 64 years-old now and i cherish the childhood memories of Johnny Otis. Thanks Johnny for being a part of my childhood. GOD BLESS YOU. Johnnie Davis. WATTS/COMPTON/LOS ANGELES

Oh, how sad this makes me feel on reading the passing of Johnnie Otis. I have so many fond memories of his music. I think of Little Esther Phillips (Double Crossing Blues) and Mel Walker (Cry Baby and Dreamin Blues) and of course Johnny's Willie and the Hand Jive and his Blues Nocturne. I have ALL of these records. Johnnie was so talented and shared this with those that sang for him. He will be truly missed by those who knew his music. I even attended his Church/Home when he became a Minister. Rest on Johnnie in your Heavenly Home and Strenght to your Family. May GOD Bless Them. Your music will never be forgotten.

Johnny Otis deserves a place in history because he mentored young black artists who were absolutely responsible for an important phase in the evolution of music. Otis promoted many with the greatest of all being the legendary Etta James, the last authentic Queen of blues/soul. Otis promoted artists who made music this entire country embraced, it was the best of times. Thank you Johnny Otis.
Many of us in the Bay Area got to know Johnny through the music class he taught at Kimball's East in Emeryville in addition to his Saturday morning radio show in the late 90s and early 2000s. I don't think there was a textbook, because he would have had to write it. Every week was a lecture of Johnny's experiences and live music by Johnny, his band, and a special guest from the subject genre--all for $10 a week or less if you weren't taking the class for credit. Beginning with The African Drum Beat and moving on to Call and Response, Minstrels, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Big Bands, and on and on, Johnny was an animated and enthusiastic wealth of information. Phyllis and Nicky were always there too and Jerry and I feel so fortunate to have attended the inaugural semester. Thank-you Johnny, for caring and sharing. RIP. Condolences to Phyllis and the Otis family.
Thanks for your music we will miss you
My condolences to the family, Johnny spent his life bringing joy to others through his music, now may the may the God of comfort give you comfort in your time of distress. (Isaiah

He was a true Pioneer. The Johnny Otis Show was THE ORIGINAL casting show where dozens of future R'N'B stars started their carreer. He was ahead of his time with everything he did he was the first white to realise the uniqueness of the African-American musical heritage and he dedicated his life to nourish and popoularise it and he did a great job in that. To Shuggie and the rest of the family I offer my truest condolences, and as a Greek descent person I wish him KALO TAXIDI Johnny we gonna miss you. Dino Koftis Genova; Italy

I can't express to you, his family, how much I loved Johnny. He is the earliest memory of popular music that I carry.
I am 66 years old and as a seven and eight year old in Los Angeles I watched him with my friends as he performed on television. We watched him and loved to join in as he performed the Hand Jive. This was the beginning of Rock n Roll, even before Elvis, and I am glad I have that memory.
I have wondered what happened to Johnny for many years and I am glad to know things went well for him but I am sorry for your loss. It is a loss for many.
