I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-Silvered wings.
Where never Lark nor eagle flew And while with silent lifting mind I trod The high untrespassed Sanctity of space, Put out my hand And touched the face of God.

I think of you and the rest of the STS-107 crew, I remember watching a show where your husband John said, no more false hope no more wishful thinking this is over, I remember watching what I thought was going to be the end of a wonderful mission instad it was a nightmare, one of my friends thought is was something else other then the shuttle, I wanted to believe it was to but in my heart, I knew we had lost 7 wonderful pepole, I wish I could change everything, if there really is a heaven, I know that's where you are!

It seems like yesterday. I stayed for a week in a small Little Bay, JA resort called Coconuts by the Sea. Laurel Clark, her husband, and son were also there, spending their last family vacation time together prior to the Columbia flight. What a wonderful spirit this woman had! As a teacher, I loved to visit area schools when on vacation. Laurel so graciously accompanied me one afternoon to describe her mission and aspirations to the students of Little Bay. On another day we were swimming in the ocean. She dove deep and brought up a seabiscuit. It was broken and she was about to throw it aside when I asked her if I could have it. She so graciously gave it to me. That seabiscuit remains in my Kindergarten classroom today, as I tell the story of meeting this wonderful woman.

God bless you, Laurel and family. I have never forgotten you!

To the Clark family,

We are sorry for the loss of your loved one. May the comforting words from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and the fond memories of your loved one continue to provide comfort to you.

May you find a measure of peace in God's promises found in the last book of the Holy Scriptures 21:4..."And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

This story about Laurel Clark caught my attention;

At a reception for astronauts the night before liftoff, a 9-year-old girl, the daughter of a friend, walked up to Laurel Clark and handed her a poem.

Its first line was: "The angel who fell to earth."

Laurel and her husband, Jon, exchanged a glance.

"I said, 'Wow. I wonder what that means,' " Jon Clark recalled. " 'I hope it doesn't mean what I think it does.' "

Though they didn't discuss it that night, the couple had talked before about the risks of space travel. Laurel was not a reckless person, but for her, risk and aliveness was the same thing. She had been a sky diver, a ship's doctor in a submarine and a scuba diver who trained with Navy SEALs.

When he went to pick up belongings Laurel Clark had left in a duffel bag at Kennedy Space Center, the "angel" poem, tucked in a pocket among her clothes, was the first thing Jon Clark found.

He searched in vain for a picture she must have taken up with her on the flight. It showed the two of them in a sailboat. It was one of her favorite photos of the two of them together. They had taken it years before. On the back, she had written:

"A ship in a harbor is safe. But that's not what ships are for."

"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other living thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:38-39
We are one family, and we are never alone.
May God bless you all and grant you peace.

February 04, 2003
We were saddened to learn that Laurel Clark was my husband's (Denis Mulholland) childhood friend Laurie Salton. They grew up together on Delview Terrace, in Delhi, NY. He says that she was a good friend, for a girl, and was always smart. He easily forgave her after being bitten by her dog, Duchess! What a double-edged sword, to find out how accomplished she was as an adult, and mourn her loss in the same breath. Her family and friends have our deeply-felt condolences.
February 04, 2003
You and the rest of the crew will not be forgotten. Heroes and courageous men and women have a special place awaiting them in paradise. Peace and may God bless you!

I remember Laurel as an intern at Naval Hospital Bethesda. She had an excellent attitude and was always willing to cover when needed. I recall she was going to dive school but wanted to be a flight surgeon also. I was shocked to hear about the shuttle tragedy; I had no idea she had become an astronaut. Laurel will be remembered by me as an excellent person and physician. My condolences to her family. She is now with God. Her work in space and elsewhere has and will advance us as a nation and world community.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,--and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless falls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor eer eagle flew--
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
February 03, 2003

To the family of Laurel Clark, words can not begin to describe the sorrow my family and myself feel for your loss. She soared through the Heavens above guided by the hands of G-d. G-d held held her hand as he led her to see the wonders of the world. G-d decided to take her from the earth and she became Part of the Heaven. When I look into the stars at night, I know that because of her and the sacrafice she gave to further our future lives in space. She is a Hero.

May G-d bless your family in their time of sorrow, May they find Peace when the look into the stars, and know that Laurel is beside G-d looking over you and all of the World.

Godspeed to Laurel's family and those whom worked with her at NASA, May they continue through life not looking at the Tragedy of what happen of the end of her life, but the beauty in which she lived her life.

G-d Bless

I remember working with you when your squadron deployed from MCAS Yuma to MCAS Iwakuni almost ten years ago. Impressive that you were one of only a handful of female USN Flight Surgeons I had the luck to encounter. To see that you attained what so many pilots have only dreamed to get is incredible. May God keep you and bless your family. I wish there was more I could give to your family than my condolences. Saying sorry just isn't enough to replace the amazing person that you are.

To the family of Laurel,
My heart and prayer goes out to you. I understand the feeling of losing someone in such a tragic way. I lost my sister on 9/11, Lillian Caceres, and I was grateful to all the people who reached out and shared their grief with my family. I know that your family lost Timothy and Amy's brother Robert on that day too. So you can be sure I feel your sorrow.
May God Bless you all and I know they are in Heaven.
Sincerely,
Aurea

There are no words to express our deepest sorrow for your loss. The country has been fortunate to have had such brilliant, humble people willingly go above & beyond their duty to make the world a better place for all.
We wish you peace as have many wished our family for the loss of our beloved on 9-11-01.
Our thoughts & prayers with you & all the NASA families.

We Remember Them

In the rising of the sun
and in its going down
We Remember Them

In the blowing of the wind
and in the chill of winter
We Remember Them

In the opening of buds
and in the warmth of summer
We Remember Them

When we are weary,
and in need of strength
We Remember Them

When we are lost,
and sick of heart
We Remember Them

When we have joys
we yearn to share
We Remember Them

So long as we live,
they too shall live,
for they are now a part of us,
As We Remember Them
