April 23, 2012
Dear Amy,

I spent time with you and Levon while we made the movie, Man Outside. You'll remember, because Levon told his Manager, "I want to meet the dog that's in this movie, and the owner, as soon as they arrive. He took us up to your room the minute we arrived at the HIlton and Levon almost didn't let us leave." That was the best 2 months of my life and, although I haven't seen you since, I've hung out with Levon several times in New Orleans and when he'd come to Austin. I've never seen Levon without that smile and energy that was always to big for whatever room he was in. There hasn't been, or ever will be, anyone like him. I was lucky to have known him, but blessed to have spent as much time with him as I have. I also knew him well enough to know that he would not want anyone planning a funeral - he'd want a party. The problem is, the party has no chance to be anything close to what it would be with him there. His spirit will be there, though - and we'll feel it. I feel it right now and am smiling and crying while I write this. Every moment I ever spent with him was a party. My heart is with you and your family during this tough time. I hope to see you again, soon.

Love, Chip

To his family and friends, our hearts are sad for your loss. We feel like we have lost a member of our own family. Levon brought smiles to our faces whenever we saw him play -- one would be blessed to enjoy what they do as much as Levon seemed to enjoy playing music. May he live on in his music and our memories
April 23, 2012
Dear Sandy and Amy,

We've never met.
My wife and I live in New Hampshire.
I teach music privately and my wife does a million other things.
We wanted to say that we've been devoted fans of Levon's ever since we first heard “Music From Big Pink”.
We've listened to so many songs so often from his Band years and from his more recent work.
I felt I got to know Levon better from reading his biography “This Wheel's On Fire” some years ago.
We were so happy that Levon was able to sing again and resume his music-making with you and Larry.
Our hearts broke when we heard that he had passed.
We're so sorry for your loss.
We consider him a gem.
Find the strength to forge ahead and know that Levon's presence and work uplifted the lives of millions.
Our love goes out to you.

I didn't realize the brilliance of Levon Helm until I was 38, 2 years a go. I happened across "The Last Waltz" on YouTube and was floored. I immediately searched the archives for more Levon music. Being from Arkansas I can relate to his twang. I wonder why he wasn't more popular in his prime? What a voice. God bless you Levon. May you rest in peace and sing with the heavenly angels!

April 21, 2012
I am so sorry Sandy and Amy. I will hold a good thought (and say a prayer) for Levon and his family.
April 21, 2012
I will think of Levon Helm every day for the rest of my life; he was the namesake for my first born (Leevon, August 1991) - The Weight is one of my all time favourite songs and if I had a girl her name would have been Annalee. Glad to have seen him in Calgary with Ringo's All-Star Band; although not with The Band sadly. Thankfully, I can still watch videos (Festival Express and The Last Waltz) which I will do with a bottle of Red - his name means "Joined In Harmony" - and that he was; the music lives on!
April 21, 2012
Dear Mr.Helm. I never met you,but you are still
a friend to me. Thankyou verymuch forthat gift. LO VEu.

I read his book about his roots in country which developed into his Rock N Roll experience and everything else.
A story about his deer hunting escapade was especially hilarious.
It's a wonderful read and I thank him for spreading joy.
Peace to his family.
April 21, 2012
I first heard and saw Levon Helm with The Band in the early 1970s, after spending most of my youth in Japan. His music and voice has always spoken to me. His last few CDs are wonderful ventures into the heart of American music. DIRT FARMER brought me through a particularly blue period. Levon, you show that music really can save lives. Bless you and thank you, and condolences to family and friends.

I had the privilege of being part of Tribune Entertainment's "The Road" series back in 1994 and the taping in Rockford IL. I met Levon, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson and was thrilled to witness these legends play live for a segment of the show, which aired later on TV. Also the year they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame~ so it seemed "Life is a Carnival" was a fitting tune for that time of revival and recognition. I still have the taped portion when the show aired, so I can relive my memory and still feel the joy I felt then.
Now I am grateful and sad, both.
My sincere condolences to the Helm family for this great loss, but knowing there is no pain and illness for Levon in Glory. He was loved by many and a humble soul whose expressive voice touched our hearts.

April 19, 2012
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Levon was one of a kind. When you heard his voice, it seemed to take you back 100 or more years to early America. I saw him with The Band live a couple of times including, at the LA Forum with Dylan in 1974 (After The Fall or whatever the tour was called). It was magical night and a lifetime memory. Five years ago I visited Helena, Arkansas to explore his roots. The farm he grew up on was in Turkey Scratch or some such place. We'll miss you Levon, RIP.

Our sincere condolences to Levon's family - "May the angels lead him into paradise" - we hope to meet him there someday...

It was a pleasure and privilege to know Levon in our younger years. I can remember when he played the bass with a washtub and a broomstick on stage in Helena, Arkansas. Later, I was priviledged to drive Levon and the Ronnie Hawkins' band driving 100 miles an hour around 1957. Great memories and fine gentleman. A couple of years ago we missed seeing him downtown Helena radio station KFAA. Excellent in Coal Miner's Daughter. Condolences to family and friends in and around Helena. Prayers, Wesley Pickett, Conway Twitty's former road manager.

To Levon's family I offer my sincere condolences. If his voice is any reflection of the man himself, then he was surely a strong, kind, sweet fatherly soul who loved his family very much. The earth lost a great one today.
