My deepest condolences to Mr. Mayor Daley and his Family. Maggie was / is such a lady with grace, strength, courage, and even while battling cancer still did what she needed to do for her Family and Chicago. I have always enjoyed following her work, seeing what she wears, and just watching her anytime on the news. She did everything in such a way and with class. Mr. Daley, You have a wonderful, amazing wife, and don't think she isn't with you anymore, she is, and always will be in your heart. I now understand why you stepped down from being Mayor, but Please know you are missed, and please come back!!! You are Chicago and Chicago isn't the same without you! You and Maggie are Chicago! My dentist Dr Parrott has a Picture of you, Mayor Daley and him in his office, and I am so jealous, because I always wanted to meet you and shake your hand, the closest I ever got to you was working at the Daley Center, ha-ha. ;-) I wish you and your family the best of everything, and please know you are all very blessed to have Maggie as your mother and your wife, and friend and grandmother. She will be much missed but never forgotten!

With our deepest condolences to the Daley family from a family of artists -
My husband and I met Maggie on a few occasions and found her to be a gracious and sincere appreciator of art. Our son, Zack, attended Gallery 37 all through high-school and into college. He attributes his experience there to confirming and inspiring his career path as an artist. I will never forget Maggie's attentive viewing and insightful comments as she accompanied my husband and myself on a tour of his retrospective art exhibit at the Cultural Center a few years ago. She then took us on a tour of After School Matters and her pride in the program was palpable. Chicago arts will never have a more supportive booster than your, and our, beloved Maggie. Her indomitable spirit and courage continue to inspire us and many others. May God bless her on her path and give you comfort.

Mayor Daley and Family,
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you at this most difficult time. I will always treasure the friendship and memories of knowing her. That great, big smile of hers;said it all.She was and will always be the First Lady of Chicago. May God keep All of you near Him.
Looking down on all of us, Maggie is saying this beautiful poem.

Remember Me

To the living,I am gone;to the sorrowful,I will never return.
To the angry,I was cheated, but to the happy,I am at peace.
And to the faithful,I have never left.I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore - gazing at a beautiful sea - Remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty - Remember me.
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity - Remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, and your memories of the times we loved, the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will have never gone away.
Maggie, may you have the eternal rest that God has promised you.

This is so heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the entire Daley Family. I now live in the Minneapolis area, but grew up in Chicagoland (suburbs). My husband is a born-and-bred Chicagoan, from the Beverly area, btw. (We moved to Minnesota in 2004 and lived in Chicago for about 6 years...I voted for Daley when living there in the 1990s.) I have fond memories of attending the Columbus Day parades, which ended up being right outside my office building off of West Wacker Drive in the 1990s, and watching Mayor Daley and his wife stroll by. At least I swear she was always there, by the Mayor's side, if my memory serves me right. Mayor Daley, I certainly hope you and yours have the strength to endure with grace during this upcoming holiday season. My sympathies are with you all.
November 29, 2011

To the Daley family-

We have lost a true Chicago treasure but more importantly, you have lost a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother! I too am a cancer survivor and there are no real words to share....simply prayers, love and support for each of you. Of course I never met Mrs. Daley but knowing she too was a survivor, extended a special bond to many of us! Her grace in the face of it all was truly inspiring and will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Daley, may you rest in the loving arms of your God. You will be missed by so very many! Mayor Daley, may God's comforting presence continue to be with you always!
November 28, 2011
So sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you during this diffucult time and will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless you all.

God Bless. We worked together on The Walk for Ignatius in 1992 raising money for the new Science Building. She made all of us feel that she was one of us and "just another mother". She even called one Saturday morning to see if there was anything she should be doing. What a Wonderful woman. You are all in our prayers.

Regarding "our" Maggie Daley:
If you look up, in the dictionary,
the words "wife", "mother", and
"citizen" ... and don't see HER
picture next to the definition ...
well ... let's work on that lapse!

Good bye, dear "Mama Maggs!" God
KEEP you, and ENJOY you!!!

November 28, 2011
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Daley Family:
Mrs. Daley is no longer here in body but her spirit remains with us all. My mother raised me with this understanding: It's not the date of our birth or the date of our transition we should remember but rather, it's the dash between those two dates that tell our story. Maggie's story was divinely inspired and it showed by the many things that she did for others. What I will remember from Mrs. Daley is that she was a poised woman born with a purpose and with grace. A woman who actually got to do what she was born to do.
November 28, 2011
Rest in peace. Memories eternal!

There will certainly never be another Maggie Daley, but her memory is rekindled every time one of the thousands of people she helped or inspired repeats her giving actions or benefits from her charities. We all remember the countless times her invitee and friend, Princess Diana, came to Chicago to raise money for charities like the Aids Fund, Children's Memorial Hospital or Women's cancer fund. We remember the time that they filled the entire first floor of the Field Museum with tables, raising $5000 per plate and over $7 million. Thank you Maggie. The results of your inspirations are your living legacy.

Our deepest sympathies to the Daley family... I thought it might be comforting to hear what a difference Mrs. Daley made in others' lives. My daughter participated in After School Matters from 2007-2009, in the Opera Workshop. She's now a college junior and pursuing a degree in vocal performance. Upon hearing of Mrs. Daley's death, she posted on facebook, "RIP Maggie Daley... if it weren't for you, I would not be pursuing a career in opera performance." What a difference she made in the world! What a beautiful life and legacy!

November 28, 2011
Although, I vaguely remember the large crowd, I do recall my fathers persistence of how important it was to pay our respects to Mayor Daley Sr. I was six yrs. old at the time and as a child really only remember that we waited several hrs. to pay our respects and that we wore several pairs of long johns. I am now 42 yrs. old and reside in the south suburbs and unfortunately not able to make the commute down to the Cultural Center with my daughters to pay our respects to a woman who has made such an impact on Chicago society. I too lost my father to cancer in 2007 and pray for your family to find solace in each other. I have learned that the only realism stronger than grief is the strength that comes from the love that a family shares. It is evident that Maggie will be greatly missed by so many. After watching and listening to her services I conclude that the Daley family has truly been blessed to have shared in such beautiful and monumental memories. Her services brought my family to tears because they were so incredibly heartfelt and moving. May God bless all of you in your time of need.

Maggie Daley,

You lead by example. You showed the people of Chicago that to love is the most important gift that God gave his people. In order to love others, you must first love your spouse, children, family friends, and your community. The citizens of Chicago will miss your gracious manner and your loving smile. God bless and keep you in his loving arms.

I met Ms. Maggie Daley during the beginning of Gallery 37, which is now called Afterschool Matters. I was the liaison teacher for the silk scarf painting class. Mr. Daley walked up over 100 stairs to the 5th floor to see the kids and the art they were creating. They were thrilled to see her, and even more excited that someone of important would take the time to visit them. She wore one of the scarves at the ending ceremonies at the Cultural Center and I will never forget that moment.

She walked in beauty and she lived with love and she gave
from the depths of her heart. You knew without knowing her personally, that Maggie Daley was a magnificent gift to
her family and the community at large. Now, as Goethe
has written "life is but the childhood of our immortality"
now she has moved on to a special place without pain, a
place where only joy and peace are present...And if Goethe
is right, we shall all meet again as we share our immortal souls. However, we who are still present, shall also miss her very much. And I shall always remember her smile, which brought such warmth to all who shared even a little of her presence. I know her family and friends may feel sorrow now, but as time goes on, I pray their sorrows will be replaced with great memories of all the joys she
brought into everyone's life.l

With sincere affections, Barbara Lee Cohen

Tribute to Maggie Daley. She will be missed by all.

In tears we saw you sinking
We watched you fade away,
You suffered much in silence,
You fought so hard to stay.
You faced your task with courage
You felt your task hope descend,
But you still kept on fighting
Until the very end.
God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms around you,
And whispered, “Come with Me.”
So when we saw you sleeping
So peaceful, free from pain,
We could not wish you back,
To suffer that again.
November 26, 2011
May the Love and Comfort of Almighty God be with you during this time. Maggie is rejoicing with the Angels. Her presence will always be with you in Spirit, until such time as you are reunited.

My prayers are with you all

My most sincere condolences. The Gates of Heaven were opened and the Angels awaited the Soul of Maggie Daley.
GOD Speed Maggie, GOD Speed.
November 26, 2011
My condolences to the Daley family. Maggie Daley was a classy lady! Both of my parents were natives of Chicago and it was the place where I had my first post College (Northern Illinois University) job at Liberty Mutual, Wacker and Madison, 50 years ago, in 1961. I later became a journalist, working in Indiana, Wisconsin, California, West Virginia and now Texas, but I'll always remember Chicago with love.
November 26, 2011
My husband and I never had the opportunity to know the "Daley" family. but we did keep up with her husband Richard while he was the Mayor of Chicago. So sorry to hear about the passing of Maggie, but it sounds like it was for the best because she is no longer suffering in pain. She is up in Heaven enjoying the pretty flowers that have been waiting for her to enjoy. GOD BLESS MAGGIE'S SOUL AND GOD BLESS HER FAMILY. Elizabeth, you chose to change your wedding date and that was a wonderful choice that you could make knowing that you may not have your mom around weeks later. Keep the memories of your mom's presence from your "Special Day" in your mind forever. Maggie was a wonderful wife, mother as well as a mother-in-law for a very short time. She also would have been a terrific-loving grandma. Chicago will miss a wonderful woman who did a lot for the City.

Our deepest condolences to Rich Daley and the entire Daley Family. We had just come back from a walk after our Thanksgiving dinner when we heard about Maggie. What a fighter she was, never letting cancer stop her from living. How wonderful it was for her to attend her daughter's wedding and be with all those she loved so dearly. I'd like to believe that as she passed, her darling son Kevin was waiting there to take her hand and show her the way to our Heavenly Father. She will always be with her family, watching from above and she is only a prayer away. May all of the wonderful memories you have of Maggie sustain you during this difficult time. May she forever rest in peace.

There are two women in my life that I have always admired. They are Jacqueline Kennedy and Maggie Daley. Both were so beautiful and gracious. So caring and willing to lend a hand. I knew Maggie was suffering and when Mayor Daley chose to step down I felt a lot of it had to do with his wife's health. Thank God she was here to see her daughter become a wife. She was smiling in those photos and looked absolutely beautiful as usual. Chicago won't be the same without her.
My prayers go out to the entire Daley family. Maggie will always be with you. Watch for the little signs that she is close. She will always love you and want you all to be happy. God bless.

November 25, 2011
Although my family never had the honor of meeting the late Mrs. Daley, we were inspired by and participated in "After School Matters Summer Youth Programs."
Under the guidance of my late father,
Oscar Brown Jr., we recieved funding and assistance needed to remount his production, "Great Nitty Gritty," from 2002 until 2004. The success of this musical program was attributed in part to the vision Mrs. Daley and my father shared in helping our inner city youth. Our heart felt condolences go out to the Daley family. In the days ahead be comforted by acknowledging the legacy she now leaves behind.

One of the reasons my husband and I moved to Chicago/Chicagoland a little more than a decade ago was because of its incredible art scene. Whatever your politics are, it is fact that the Daleys had a huge hand in helping to make this city a first-class/world-class art-city.

Thank you, Mrs. Daley, for inspiring me. You will be missed.

Maggie, I was one of the fortunate young Chicagoans to have worked at Gallery 37 for several summers. You made sure there was a place for young artists and gave us permission to be ourselves. You made it a point to say what so few adults say to young people; that art is important to pursue and a valuable part of city life. I am now a professional actress and teaching artist back in the city I grew up in. Thank you so much, Maggie.
November 25, 2011
Thank you, Maggie Daley for the countless gifts and love that you shared with so many of your fellow Chicagoans.

Thank you for creating the hope, fun and opportunities given to the teenagers of Chicago in your After School Programs, and for giving our fair city such the beauty in our parks and in our communities.

Thank you for showing so many people (including we breast cancer patients) how to live bravely with and with hope every single day, as you battled cancer.

Thank you, Maggie, bless you.

May a flock of angles take you to your eternal rest. And I may they have your tulips ready for your arms.

November 25, 2011
Although I only knew her as a public figure, I "met" Maggie Daley once at a funeral Mass. The retired Pastor in our parish had passed away, and he had been a long time figure in Chicago's Addiction Recovery community. I was at the funeral Mass in a packed Church, and at a particular time in the service members of the congregation turn and shake hands with each other. The woman in front of me turned to take my hand and I realized that it was Maggie Daley -- by herself, without entourage, there for the same reason we all were there to honor that fine man. I was touched by how "regular" this woman was. I am glad that she was surrounded by those who loved her as she made the final trip home to be with Kevin. I know that eventually the family will feel her loving support again, but in a different way. My sincere condolences.
November 25, 2011

November 25, 2011
We seem to give her back to You
O God Who gave her to us!
Yet as You did not lose her in giving
so we do not lose her by her return.
Not as the world gives do You give
O Lover of us!
What You give You do not take away
For what is Yours is ours also, if we are Yours!

Life
is eternal
Love
is immortal
Death
is only a horizon
A horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight

Lift us up Strong Spirit of God
that we may see further.
Cleanse our eyes
that we may see more clearly.
Draw us closer to Yourself
that we may know ourselves
to be nearer our loved ones who are with You!
While You prepare a place for us
Prepare us also for that happy place
That where You are we may also be.
Forevermore!

For almost 20 years I delivered a poinsettia to Mrs Daley from a friend. I never met her, because a Police Officer would take the plant then bring it to her. I always smiled thinking of her receiving that beautiful plant that I had grown and now delivered. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Mayyor Daley:
Tresa and I express our heart-felt condolences in the demise of your beloved wife. I was fortunate to spent time with you and her during our trip to Kochi, India. She touched many lives in here and abroad. Many will miss her wonderful smile. Our prayers are for her soul.

Maggie was truly a gift to humanity. Thank you for bringing her to us and also empowering her to help our children and green our dear city.

I will think of her every time I drive down Mich avenue and see the butterflies and birds in the lovely median strip!
