Manute Bol was a good basketball player. He was competitive displaying grace, mildness self control along with a lovely smile. A gentle giant and a very fine role model. May your family find peace and comfort and remember how Jesus Christ called Lazarus back from death.

I enjoyed watching Manute play ball, he was very cordial and kind during interviews, and his smile could light up a room. I am truly sorry for your loss, please remember God’s words at 1John 5:13, “I write YOU these things that YOU may know that YOU have life everlasting, YOU who put YOUR faith in the name of the Son of God.

For now I will miss Manute’s smile.

To The Family of Manute Bol:

I would like to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of your loved one, Manute Bol. I remember when he first came on the scene as a professional basketball player and I thought: Wow, he sure is tall! I always enjoyed seeing him play and being from the Washington, DC area he was one of our players. Finding the right words to say isn't always easy but I would like to leave you with a scripture that I find comforting. When you read it really trust and believe that our heavenly father will do just what he says, all you have to do is ask for his help. The scripture is found at Isaiah 41:10. Having experienced a double family loss recently I truely understand the pain you are feeling during this time of sorrow. But know that our heavenly father also promises a time when death will be no more and we will be able to see our loved ones again. So hold fast to these promises and you will find the comfort you need when you need it most.

I remember being at a Chicago hotel when his team was playing the Bulls. Him & a few of his teammates were in the lobby. They all had on black sweats & he had his hood up over his head. My husband & I got on the elevator along with him. I am all of 5 feet tall & stood directly beside him. I looked up at him & he looked down at me. Many onlookers left in the hotel lobby started laughing at the sight as the elevator doors closed. My husband started laughing & couldn't stop. Soon the whole elevator joined in. Before we got off, he shook my hand & patted me on the head. Ever since then, I have followed his career. I was so impressed by his efforts off the court in helping to improve the country where he was from. Indeed, the world has lost a true gentleman & humanitarian. RIP Manute Bol.

It was very surprising to learn that Manute Bol had passed. He had a great career in basketball and was liked by many people. His humanitarianism was extraordinary. I hope that his family and friends can comfort each other knowing how much he was adored.

Another comfort can come from the bible where God promises that one day our dead loved ones will be resurrected back to life. This can be found at John 5: 28&29. We know that this will come true because at Hebrews 6:18 it tells us that it is impossible for God to lie.

If your family takes a few minutes to look up these scriptures it can comfort you knowing that God has not forgotten Manute now or forever.

Love, Michele

I got to know Manute through caring for him over the course of his stay at UVA Medical Center. I want his family to know how much he wanted to return to them in Kansas. I asked him one night, Why do you live in Kansas? He said "My family is there" We joked that I would drop him at the airport in the morning. He spoke of God often, so I know he is at peace. I hope the family knows that...

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of one the worlds' greatest basketball player. I use watch Mr. Bol went he played for the 76ers, was dangerous on the court, he will reject anything and everything in the middle of the court. He would always have the smile after he toss your shot back in your face. He will be missed greatly, but not forgotten. God bless the family. Erica James and Family

I remember him as a young male and I never could get over how tall he was! It is very sad to see him perish but the bible states in Acts 24:15 that there will a "ressurrection of both the righteous and unrighteous..."

This way we can be sure that his face will be seen again right here on earth!

To the Bol family, i'm sorry for your lost.

I watched you on the court and you were a warrior but your work in the country of your birth puts you in the hall of fame of saints. Your legacy to me is the heart you had for the people of your country at risk of death, what you did on the court was exceptional but the man you were to fight for your beliefs at the cost of the loss of great wealth has made you in my eyes a saint and a man of God who will be welcomed with open hands in the house of the Lord

Bol Family:

Manute has been lifted from his labors and our sympathies for his loss are extended to the family. I will always remember his arrival in Bridgeport and how he shone such a light on U.B. and Famous Pizza. He was definitely a phenom and my sons and I began attending the games & following his career. They, themselves were aspiring BB players & were in awe of this young man. He was always kind, gentle and approachable. I'm not at all surprised about his humanitarian efforts in providing for his country. Even years later when we saw him again in Mass. at a CIAA championship game, he was gracious enough to speak with us and pose for photos with our family. Soft-spoken and always humble, he was an unforgettable class-act. Thank you, Manute for gracing our City and touching our lives. May you rest in peace and may God bring comfort and healing to you all.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am deeply saddened. I served as chaplain for the Washington Bullets/Wizards ('79-'98) when Manute played for the team and got to know him fairly well.

One thing that I want to share is that in one of the pre-game chapel meetings Manute asked Jesus Christ to come into his heart. I remember the look in his eyes and the smile on his face. He was very aware of his need for a Savior. He was also very aware of the price that was paid on the cross for his salvation.

Anyone who makes his/her peace with God through Jesus Christ is instantly absent from the body and present with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8). Based upon that blessed hope, it can be said that at this moment he is with the Lord.

Manute is now part of the "heavenly cloud of witnesses" (Heb. 12:1) cheering us on to finish the race well. The way Manute lived his life -- pouring out to those who are in need and who have absolutely no way of repaying him for his generosity -- is wisdom for those of us who are yet alive.

And it also gives us a glimpse into Manute's profound understanding of what Jesus had done for him some 2,000 years ago.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Manute was simply too young to die. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. He was able to carve out a nice career, but he certainly was not the most talented player. But it was
what he did off the court that made the man. He was a good man.

May the God of all comfort be with the family.

I was a college basketball referee when
Manute was playing college basketball. I refereed a game @ Mt.St Mary's college and he was playing. I remember he blocked a shot from his original position as a baseline player in his team's zone defense as took a couple
steps toward an opponent in his corner
of the baseline. Was I ever impressed!!

What a brave young man he was, to come so far from home and family. Yet he didn't leave them behind. Because of Manute Bol, the world was much more aware of Sudan. He amazed us with his talent (and yes, his sheer height), but he amazed us even more with his good heart. Sudan Sunrise will be only one of his legacies. The other is the gentleness of this giant of a man--in integrity as well as being 7' 7". May he smile on us from the free throw line in heaven. God Bless you well, Manute!

Was working in downtown Cleveland in early 1980's at Ameritrust Bank. While driving past Cleveland State University I spotted a very tall man with his arm rested on the bus shelter top!!! I asked my co-worker driving if he saw that and he said I was nuts. We turned around and drove right up to bus stop...Manute just smiled as I am sure our jaws were dropping out...God Bless Manute Bol

June 20, 2010
As a Marine serving at the embassy in Cairo, Egypt, I had the great privelage of meeting Manute Bol. He came out there often to spend time with his cousin who worked security with us. His cousin grew up with Manute after his family was killed in the war. He and his cousin would spend a lot of time at the Marine House playing pool, working out, and even playing a little basketball. I wasn't much of a basketball player so, I played pool with him, which was really hard to do against someone who could reach all the way across the table. He was the kindest man you could know. He talked fondly of his days growing up and of the sadness of the war there. He had a big heart and was a great man. He will be greatly missed.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

In a world where star athletes act like spoiled children, Manute Bol was a continual class act. Many made more money than him in his chosen profession, but he did far more in his 47 years with those resources than any of his contemporaries have with far greater fortunes. Let us never forget the cause of Sudanese peace that he gave his life fighting for. He wasn't an All-Star in basketball, but he sure was an All-Star human being. Rest In Peace, Manute.

June 19, 2010
I am so sorry to hear of Manute Bol's passing. As an African American, it was beautiful to see someone from our "motherland" and so much adversity make it big in life, and want to do so much good for his beloved people and homeland.

As a Christian, I would like to extend to his family the hope of the Christian Scriptures. Jesus said that “all those in the memorial tombs will hear his [Jesus’] voice and come out.” (John 5:28, 29) Similarly, Revelation 20:13 says: “The sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Hades gave up those dead in them.” “Hades” refers to the common grave of mankind. This collective grave, that we all go to when we die, will be emptied. All those billions who rest there will live again. That is God's promise and that is what Jesus gave his life for, so that we all, great and small will have a chance to live again, in a beautiful paradisaic earth.

May the love of the Almighty God Jehovah and his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ reach your hearts, enrich your minds and heal your broken hearts at such a tremendous loss.

June 19, 2010
my sincere condolences to MR BOL'S family and friends. I watched him play and block shots. He had a passion for the game.
I recently found out that my brother has kidney problems.
I have found that reading the holy writings can bring comfort so here are a couple of verses you may find comforting too.

(Revelation 21:3-4) . . .With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.. . .

(2 Corinthians 1:3-4) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those in any sort of tribulation through the comfort with which we ourselves are being comforted by God.
thank you

Rest in Peace, Mr Manute Bol.
June 19, 2010
The world has lost a gracious and generous ambassador of both basketball and activism. No matter what Manute ever accomplished on the court, he always found the time and energy to keep our attention on the Sudanese Crisis. He is said to have donated most of his NBA fortune to his good work, and to have risked his life on many occasions to continue his travel back and forth to his home country. There will never be another role model quite like him. Our sincere sympathies to his entire family.

Lost for words but "wow" what a shame that Manute has left us at such a young age. My condolences to the family.
June 19, 2010
What a sad day! My children were young while he played, and they loved to read about him in Sports Illustrated for Kids. They could not believe anyone could be so tall! The true measure of his size was in his heart, shown by all he did for his homeland. I fervently hope that his good work will continue, and that today's players will consider his legacy and follow his lead in doing good in this needy world of ours.
June 19, 2010

He was too youg to die. He was a good man who worked hard for justice in his native country
June 19, 2010
My heart is filled with great sadness as I read about the death of Manute Bol. I really enjoyed watching the former NBA player run up and down the basketball court fighting through screens and chasing after loose balls. But most importantly, he was a kind person who never forgot where he came from, and willingly gave back to his Native Sudan. I do hope that his life will not be forgotten, and that his family may find comfort in the arms of God. May his soul rest in peace.
