September 07, 2014
Mary,
My emotions were stirred and my voice sang along with you when I saw you at the University of Illinois in the 60s. About 40 years later, I took my daughter and her new husband--as well as mine--to see Peter, Paul, and Mary at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA. Me, from Illinois, my daughter, a native Californian, her husband, from Brazil, and my husband, from China, all blended in your magic and music. RIP. You are missed, but your voice will never be stilled.

May we all look forward to the day that we wont have to endure death due to age, sickness or violence. Almighty God has given us the promise of soon there no more being infants who live but a few days, or one who fail to live out their days. For anyone dying at one hundred will be considered a mere child- Isaiah 65:20. May we all hold on to that hope soon to be fulfilled.

I've loved PP&M from their first album. I saw them live in Nashville in 1967 when Mary sang "No Other Name." for the first time. Noel Paul wrote it for her. It became my song. The first time I sang it in public was at The Bitter Inn in Greenwich Village. I sat on the stool where Mary sat for the album cover. What a thrill. All I could think was Mary. I'm still singing the song, and I still think of Mary. I loved and admired her. I am exactly her age, and my greatest compliment is when someone tells me "you sound so much like Mary." I miss her every day. I can't imagine how sad life would have been without her.
November 27, 2012
I have been a PP&M fan for so many years. I was serving in Vietnam, but they were still so very special to me.I loved both you and the trio's music, I have records which console me, but they will never match watching your performances.
With love to a very special lady, rest in peace for eternity.
Rev. Dr. Michael Houston

The memories of Peter, Paul and Mary's beautiful music will always be with me. I still get goosebumps listening to their songs, and smile when I remember their appearances on television, especially "The Folk Music Reunion". Phil C. Hawkins, Little Rock, AR (Pippinhawkins@yahoo.com)
July 31, 2012
In 2012 I still listen to all of my Peter, Paul, and Mary music, and I have every piece of music they have ever done, in LP, DVD, boxed sets and whatever I have had to purchase for my collection. It is one of my most treasured collections of music, if not the most treasured collection I own. It speaks to my heart and my soul even to this day. May you rest in peace, dear Mary, and may the angels fly you to the arms of Jesus that you might rest in memory eternal as your music will. Thank you for everything and thank you for the incredibly important part you played in my life!!! :) Memory eternal! Vicki

Welcome Home
written by L J Coon

Welcome home my friend, from so much suffering
Welcome home my friend, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend welcome home

Talk of love one’s lost, so many years ago
And how you hurt inside, till no more tears would flow
Let the healing start, you can't look back no more
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

Could I somehow sooth, your pain that lives within
If you just let go, the healing will begin
Holding on so tight, letting go is half the test
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

It’s ok my friend…the pain won't hurt, no more ...

The world was a better place because of Mary Travers.
September 11, 2011
Seeing Peter and Paul without Mary reminded me of the great loss America has suffered, quietly. HOw grateful we should be that she lived in a time and touched enough hearts that her work was recorded so that we can enjoy it over and over again and introduce it to younger generations
September 11, 2011
Thank you. You made my eyes a little wider, my heart a little bigger and my voice a little louder. Peace always.

Mary T was a fantastic performer and legendary singer in a great group.....PP&M were the Beatles of folk
She will never be forgotten
August 27, 2011
Our most loved Mary , Peter , and Paul ... Watching you again tonight on PBS brings back so many memories of my own childhood. But more meaningful are the years of my children shared with your music from 1985 forward. We would dance with joyous abandon to the lion and delilah song under summer moonlight in the backyard. Paul's wife saved my youngest daughter in a hotel swimmingpool in lake Tahoe in 1993. That same evening we were invited to visit with PPM after their concert and my very young daughters were delighted to cuddle in marys lap. I remember them admiring her shoes, their 3 and 5 year old eyes sparkling. Both girls now live their lives in music... One on Broadway, the other performing "folk it up" music. Thank you for the joy you have given our family.
August 24, 2011
You were an inspiration to a generation. Your group, your songs, and you, yourself, had such an awesome impact on our lives. Gone are the socially conscious groups like Peter, Paul & Mary, but your music lives on forever! Thank you for sharing it with the world.
August 23, 2011
Watching PBS tonight, 8/23, I didn't realize Mary has passed on, I must have been in denial about it, as I watched the show, I thought to myself, "When these folks pass on, I'll be so devestated, I love their music, their lives their principles they stood for!" Then my husband mentioned that Mary had passed away...I googled this and here I am. Blessings to Mary Travers. I was you in the Bay area in the '70's, my parents saw you in the '60's. My children were raised on it...I was raised on it...
I am so sorry you have passed on. I am happy you are out of pain, misery and the problems that come with leukemia. God Speed.
August 20, 2011
My sis Karla & I went to our 1st concert to see PPM at Allee Gymnasium at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, about 1964. It was fabulous and Mary was so beautiful! Such a memorable experience!

August 08, 2011
Watching PPM on PBS here in Tampa tonight. What a terrific person Mary was. She is and always will be missed by everyone. She made us remember and cry tonight.
July 21, 2011
I remember my parents to take me to see a concert of Peter, Paul, and Mary when I was about 6 back in the 90's. I drew a picture to hold up during the concert in hopes that Mary saw, as she was my role model. The next morning, I ran into her at one of the restaurants at the hotel and went up to her and asked if she received my picture. She laughed and smiled, and asked "that lovely picture was from you? thank you!" and gave me a big hug. I doubt she remembered...but it meant so much to me and I never forgot it. She is terribly missed.
July 04, 2011
I love Peter, Paul and Mary. She was a fantastic singer and a good person. I got to see her in concert 3 times. Your words in your songs have rang close to home for me. Rest in peace sweet lady.
June 28, 2011
I had the privilege of both seeing PP&M in concert, but also meeting Ms. Travers at an airport following a flight we were both on several years ago. A true class act, a woman of immense talent, and generous to a fault. Rest well Mary.
June 22, 2011
The day before 911 I heard you singing in my sleep. How many people must die before we know that too many people have died? Woke up the next day and well------.You have always made me thankful for my blessings. You are an angel.
May 05, 2011

Like Dee from Philadelphia, I just found this website and read many of the wonderful tributes to Mary. I am in my 60's and have fond memories of all of the their hit songs. Just the thought of hearing their music again brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
June 15, 2010
I just found this site, and this beautiful tribute to Mary. I am in my early 40's and though the group was a bit before my time, I went to see them a few times at a local venue in the 90's. Prior to that, I remember taking my Dad to the airport in the 70's listening to 'Jet Plane'. One of the highlights of the show for me, was when returning from the restroom, I ran into Mary in the back of the auditorium, she gave me a little pat and a wink. What a beautiful soul! When all the other kids were singing Barney songs....mine were singing 'Garden Grow', Puff and Blowin in the Wind. Teaching my kids those songs and the carefree days I had with them, will be with me the rest of my life.

Those we love left us with gifts that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom, friendship, advice, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile. These are gifts of love that are ours to keep. Although I don’t know the family I would like to send my condolences to you. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so you will know that you are not alone. And may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day. Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts at this time. - Isaiah 41:10 & 13.

For Mary...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I had the privilege of seeing Mary at Poor David's Pub in Dallas, Texas, in the early 1980s and remember not only what a wonderful performer she was, but also a gracious woman who took the time to sit and chat with us after her set. I found her to be incredibly down to earth; she truly sought to make the world a better place.

Mary's voice, along with Peter and Paul, gave me courage to resist The Vietnam War,as well as to grasp the need for racial justice in the 60's. Their songs and her pure voice gave me a vision larger than the one my culture gave me.

Thanks Mary,

I loved Peter Paul and Mary. One of the most touching shows was the one whem she sang to her granddaughter. She was beautiful and sang with heart. I watched the show every time it was on TV. I never had the pleasure of seeing the group sing in person.
January 12, 2010
Cannot believe that only today, Jan. 2010, am I learning of Mary's passing. I always went to see her as an adult because I usually did not have th money in the 60's. Though, Peter,Paul and Mary was my first ever concert to attend and it was at the Univesity of Florida in 1961 or 62, tickets purchased by a boyfriend (different conotation in those days) and he could not have given me a better gift. I still listen to their songs. Her life and love will always be remembered. You, her family have so much for which to be thankful, just to have been "hers". God bless each of you. Ramona Rung, Pemb. I learned what Good Music was, listening to PP&M. Learned to play guitar as well.

Trouble was, my Sister and I always ended up singing Mary's parts! Still do.

One of the most unique, instantly-recognizable Voices of any generation, Mary's will live on in all of our hearts.

Life will never be the same without Mary Travers. I cried when I heard the news, as if she was a lifelong friend; and she was. I saw Peter, Paul and Mary over 20 times in concert over the years and each time was like the first. You never tired of seeing or hearing them. Their message is eternal and Mary's legacy will live on forever. I wish I would have known her personally for I am certain she had much to teach those willing to listen with their hearts. I just feel lucky to have known her as a fan, and that I will be forever. Much Love, Lisa Salmons

I remember being a camp counselor many years ago and singing Peter Paul and Mary Songs. I loved their music and their politics. I brought my children to see the trio. I was honored to be at the memorial as a photographer. I posted the photos at
www.pbase.com/mary

There were many famous people there and I got to see my heroes up close and personal. I was talking to Tom Paxton and a person next to him said "Do you know who I am?" I looked at him and said Paul I'm sorry I didn't recognize you in a suit" We spoke about one of my favorite PPM songs (RIGHT FIELD).

Mary Travers will be missed buy her heart and music will always be remembered. When I become a grandfather my grandchildren will listen and sing Peter Paul and Mary songs.
December 16, 2009
I learned of the passing of Mary Travers while listening "early in the morning" to "Sky 104" FM (that broadcasts from Rabun County, Georgia) on my car radio. Peter, Paul, and Mary's timeless song "If I Had a Hammer" was being played, and afterward the DJ announced that she had passed on the night before. Soon after that broadcast I added an entry to my Classmates page paying tribute to Mary, and also recalling my listening to an early PPM vinyl album as a kid, simply titled "Peter, Paul, and Mary". I said in that entry that I could not recall what had become of that old album over those many years (I am now 60). Then seemingly out of the blue, while searching recently in a Goodwill Store in nearby Pendleton, SC for collectible vinyl records, lo and behold, right there in middle of one stack was a copy of that album! The cover isn't in great shape, but the record certainly is. God works in mysterious ways! What a blessing to have that in my library again and to be able to listen to PPM and Mary's sweet voice on vinyl during this Christmas Season. Rest in Peace, Mary Travers! I shall always remember you, your beauty, and your music! May God Bless your Family, Friends, and Fans.

For 45 years of pleasure; for seeing you perform live in Glasgow in 1965 and in Washington DC at Earth Day a few years ago; for being the one who made sure my views were heard in all the places I could never hope to get to; for being the friend I never met over all those years, and for all the words, music and wonderful harmonies..... thank you.

To Mary's family - deepest condolences from across the water.
November 12, 2009
To Mary's daughters, my deepest sympathy. Her songs touched me like no others. I saw her many times in performance in the DC area during her solo years. Her voice was surely the voice of peace and freedom --- and still is through her wonderful recordings. Losing her is like losing a good friend.
November 12, 2009
Thank God for Mary Travers. The likes of her will never be seen on earth again. She lives forever in the hearts of millions.
November 09, 2009
My deepest sympathy to family and friends all.My connection to you, Mary goes all the way bck to the 60's as you became a voice of peace, justice and standing tall for right and freedom for all. You helped inform my life as a teacher. You helped me know my job was teaching children not a subject. And you sang loudly and I loved your voice and you. With others, you showed me possibilities for the future. Thank you for last years concert. I will treasure it and you always.
November 09, 2009
I loved being in your company...Mary, you were one of a kind! One of the first women I became aware of that actually WALKED the TALK!

So now, for you, "The Answer is Blowing In The Wind..." Gone to flowers...

To Ethan, the girls and your grandbabies, my heartfelt sympathy and love is sent. To Peter and Noel, you know you have my love and empathy for a life long friendship that was one so close that you were joined at the heart.

When the "rest of us" say our final goodbyes to you and remembers the impact that you have had on the world, tomorrow... Look down on us and smile-and make some crack about it that only you could do.
You ARE LOVED!

Peace, Love and Blessing to all,

When I am dead, my dearest

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

I STILL LOVE HEARING THE GREAT SONGS BY PETER, PAUL AND MARY.
SHE IS SINGING WITH THE ANGELS NOW.
MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO HER FAMILY.
THESE SONGS TODAY DO NOT HOLD THE CANDLE TO THE ONES THAT THEY PERFORMED.
October 20, 2009
My deepest sympathies to your family and friends. I grew up listening to Peter,Paul & Mary and I always loved your music & your beautiful voice. You will live on forever in our hearts. Rest in peace Mary.

I secretly wished I had your beautiful voice while growing up in the 60's listening to all of your songs. You, Peter, and Paul stood up for equal rights through your songs. Those same songs could easily be played today to express how our nation feels. Thank you for all you gave us. May God bless your family.
October 11, 2009
Now God can hear your beautiful voice in person. CAK----

Mary, I hope that you somehow know all of the wonderful things that are being written and said about you. I know I can speak for all of your fans when I say you have a warm heart and a beautiful voice. Only those in heaven can hear your voice now, but at least we can listen to your recordings and enjoy hearing you sing that way. May you know that you are very much loved and very much missed and that you will remain in the hearts of your fans forever and ever.

Peter, Paul & Mary helped shape my love of music & performing. Their harmonies were inspirational & their songs spoke to us all. As a PS: my wife shared a peanut butter & jelly sandwich with Mary in Grant Park during the Democratic Convention of Chiago in 1968. I was in a band that was touring with the Beach Boys in Coco Beach, Florida at the time & missed everything! Chuck Jobes, Naples, Florida

My deepest condolences to the family & friends of the wonderful songbird Mary Travers. From listening to all your early albums I learned harmonies from Mary as well as, Peter & Paul which helped me to walk on the stage for the first time to actually sing your wonderful songs. I continued to sing your music for over 15 yrs. At the age of 16 I became politically aware and loved singing your songs anywhere there was a political rally, or just on a stage in a little blues joint I have so much gratitude to all of you., especially the fabulous Mary Travers. Mary, you will be sorely missed and always remembered by me and so many. In Loving Gratitude, Jeanne McCormick ~ West Palm Beach, FL)

I am so sad that we have lost you. I grew up on your music and was so thrilled years later to sell you an antique camera at an antique show in Rochester, NY. My sisters birthday was Sept 16th and it was she who introduced me to your songs...and a few days later I lost her too. I have been listening to you, to the songs I listened to years ago. What a gift you had and gave us.... You made a difference in this world.....
October 06, 2009
I never had the privilege to see or hear Mary and the fellows in person. I only got to listen to their records and enjoy their performances on TV. Beautiful people with gifted music. But, Mary, you have left us memories of the wonderful days of old. "If I had a Hammer" was my hubby's favorite but, I loved all your songs. Your music put such meaning to life and now you have left us to be the lead singer to God's Angels. Sing to him Mary as you sang for us. Your music and songs will live on for many, many years. You will not be forgotten. I send my deepest condolences to your family and to Peter and Paul, God Bless you all for the lovely memories you have given us.
My prayers are with you at this time.
Thank you Mary.
October 06, 2009
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary & her family at this sad time. Mary was a wonderful singer & musican that will be missed. I'm so lucky to be a part of the 60's music era. The words are what is missing in songs now, and the love that went into making the beauitful music that Mary was a big part of. 500 miles from home, lord. See ya next time,
Love, Renate

It was a pretty mean time in the sixties for people who stood their ground. Look back on their example for today when you stand your ground for what is right.

Thank you Mary for the inspiration of folk. to this very day my dad and i listen to stewball. the great grands are now learning too. we saw all of you at a restaurant in 1966, and oh how excited i was, but manners are taught by the father, and i couldn't come to see you. that was best probably since you were all eating.

my niece and i wail during our listening times. every child i have ever raised, loved, and have been around know 'freight train'. even the grands.

i have always loved you from afar, you led us and our country during a most turbulent time. i was blessed to be taught by the best. Thank you friend.

Mary, Got to see you in Wilkes Barre, PA in April and was touched by your drive and attitude. I grew up with your songs and so did my children. Sang Puff the Magic Dragon in a talent show and came in second when I was 12 years old. You now have those perfect wings! To Mary's family thank you for sharing her with us and I am so sorry for your loss.

I am remembering the Selma to Montgomery March and the night before entering Montgomery... sheltered from the steady rain by great trees at a place called St. Jude's and listening and singing and talking with Mary Travers, James Baldwin et al...through the drip came the marvelous sound of a voice named Odetta - and now through those same long-ago raindrops come today's tears of loss.

Frightened we all were - terrified really - but realizing in these later years how lucky we all were to be of that time and of that place.
October 04, 2009
Mary Travers' death brings great grief as not only have we lost a wonderful individual, but we lost a huge voice for those who believe in justice and equality. I'll miss you Mary.
October 04, 2009
I grew up as a teen in the 60s in Connecticut and enjoyed Peter, Paul and Mary's powerful, meaningful music. Seeing them perform at the Bushnell in Hartford in the 80's was an important memory for me. Just the fact that there are 1000 plus entries in this guest book says something for itself.

We will always be grateful for their music! Even though they speak so much of their music hits, to me 500 miles says it all. We come with nothing into the world and we take nothing from it when we leave. Lord I'm 1, Lord I'm 2, Lord I'm 3, Lord I'm 4, Lord I'm 500 hundred miles from my home! Not a shirt on my back not a penny to my name Lord I can't go a home this a way. If you miss the train I'm on you will know that I am gone you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles! My wife heard this when she was a little girl, I never heard it, until late last year when I found it on the internet and played it, I now listen to it almost every day! Very good tune! May God rest her soul, we sure thank her and them for their contribution to the music world, now her memory will live on.

I cannot begin to express how sad I was when I heard the news. I have loved PP&M since I was a young teenager. I have every album and CD and know every song by heart. Your music has given me a lot of enjoyment and continues to lift my spirits, sooth my heart and raise my consciousness. Thank you

The first concert I attended was a PP&M show in Austin Texas in 1965. Although the times were turbulent, their harmonies were not. I was only 13 at the time, and knowing every word ,I was in full-voice, helping Mary along until my mother had to shush me. I've seen many concerts since, but none brings back the sweet memory of theirs.
Thank you, Mary, Peter and Paul

Another great voice is now silent. My earliest memories of music growing up in the 60's was playing "Puff the Magic Dragon" on my 45 record player. Just one of Peter, Paul & Mary's greats. I will always love their music. May our prayers help Mary experience the peace that does not exist on earth. Mary is playing Heaven's Jam now! Eternal Peace!

Peter,Paul and Mary's music opened up our world in the late 50's. You can listen to their music and it can evoke laughter, pain, and social commentary in one sitting. Mary was sweetness, grace and toughness with a voice like an angel. We will miss her so much it breaks your heart.

Such irony... The last time I saw PP&M was with a friend who died at the end of that year of cancer. Your songs will always be in my heart and you will always be my favorite singers. But as always... The Song is Love.............
September 28, 2009
I am heartbroken about Mary Travers. I lived on McDougal Street the same street she lived in the early 60's I used to walk by her apartment but never knew who she was then, I used to see her with her mom and dad. I too was in her era. I walked by her apartment and you can hear her sing songs. She was a gradiously classy lady. She will be totally missed. When I moved to Florida in 1970's and they had done several shows here I always brought them up some flowers, and a Note Remember Mc Dougal Street? She wrote me many letters in the past that how much she felt loved by all, in that time in the Viet Nam war era.
She was not for any war, neither was I but the Puff the magic Dragon was always my favorite song. Mary rest with god and sing your praises to the angels, so you can sing the songs of love to them, You have touched my heart with your group Peter and Paul and yourself over the years. I loved you then, I love you now, I will miss you, always

PP&M wouldn't have been without the "M" for sure. I, in my early 50's now remember a time when they were all I heard even when the radio and record player were off Peter, Paul and Mary along with other notable groups did more then just sing and make music, like the article above mentioned, they changed our world.

You’ll be missed sister that I am also sure of.
September 28, 2009
I just learned of Mary's passing and feel so sad. Peter, Paul & Mary spoke for our generation. A few years ago, Mary came to Manchester College and did a presentation. I was so excited to actually see her in person. She was a legend, and her music will live forever.

We have lost a truly gifted performer, singer, writer, and wonderful advocate for all humanity. God Bless You, Mary!
September 28, 2009
On behalf of those of us who either marched from Selma-to-Montgomery in 1965 or support the Civil Rights Movement then and now, I wish to thank Mary and her band-mates and family for her bravery and social conscience.

May the angels carry her sweet soul to her heavenly reward with Martin, Jack, Bobby and all the gang. Peace!

I saw PP&M in Chicago in 1967 and will never forget them. Mary never stopped moving. I was in the 3rd row from the front, so I had a great view of this wonderful trio of great singers. She was a great talent to the music of the 1960's and beyond.

Mary's voice in "If I Had a Hammer" has resonated with me throughout my lifetime. Not just her incredible vocals, but her defining message. Though I am saddened by her earthly death, I am buoyed forevermore by her eternal gifts of song, cause and caring.

Mary had the most beautiful & unique voice. Her talent, and beauty were just the beginning. I was not quite a teenager when I discovered her music, and shared many singing family times because of her. Of all her songs, I think "If I Had A Hammer" was my favorite. Before I knew she died, I was in a store & saw the book/cd "Puff The Magic Dragon" and sang that song all day. Gave me chills to think she later died. Peter, Paul & Mary (through their music) gave our country great hope, great political awareness, as well as songs to sing with our children....loved "Peter, Paul & Mommy." Her legacy will live on ...

The music of Peter, Paul and Mary was my childhood salvation and continuing adult passion; a part of me feels lost with Mary's passing. Saw the trio together many times; the last concert was canceled due to Mary's health. Prayers to your family; you will be missed greatly. Sue S.(California)

When I was growing up, we played and played the records - learning all the words and trying to sing like PP & M. She was one of the most beautiful singers to watch and hear. I still get a lump in my throat when I see the performance of Blowin' in the Wind. Loving and knowing her music felt like knowing her. She was a blessing to her fans, and I am certain to her family and all who truly knew her. My sympathy for your loss, and a smile for your gift of loving and being loved by her. The angel choir got a new voice! What a joy it will be to sing with her in heaven!

My deepest sympathies to Mary's family. I was just singing one of her songs that moves me to tears every time I sing it. TRAMP ON THE STREET
It was about how Jesus was left to die like a tramp on the street. Of course Puff, Blowing in the Wind, If I had a Hammer.they were so well known and beloved, but my favorite was Tramp.Thank you Mary and may God Bless your family at such a hard and sorrowful time.

One third of one of my favorite singing groups has moved on. I first heard their music when I was nine or ten years old (I'm almost 57 now--How time flies!). Not only could you sing and/or hum along to their tunes and understand the words, but the songs Peter, Paul, and Mary sang really stood for something! The best tribute we can pay to Mary Travers is to take the torch from her and run with it!!!
September 27, 2009

What an inspiration to the world Mary Travers was and still will be through her music. Peter, Paul and Mary touched our Hearts and our Souls.
Mary left her legacy of Love, Peace and Compassion. How we need this in today's world. God Bless Mary's family and loved ones. I know she at peace.
September 26, 2009
"Where have all the flowers gone" is one of the most heart wrenching ballads to the Anti-War movement ever recorded and I cry every time I hear it.
Her sultry, smoky voice is unforgettable and I am only saddened further that I never saw them in concert.
She will always be alive in her music and may God Bless her family for sharing her with us for so long.

My condolences to her family. She will be greatly missed by all!!! I loved their music. Saw them several times in concerts...

September 26, 2009
"Puff" was my first record I received as a child. I would rock on my plastic pony on springs and sing along . I'm sure my Mother was eternally grateful for PP&M, for soothing her most patience- trying youngest, when nothing else would.
September 26, 2009
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

PP&M were so much more than PUFF...I was just a little girl, with an older sister, and I knew every word to If I was a Hammer. I still feel the power of those songs.. Thank you for a life well lived and what you all left behind. May the Lord shine upon you. Sincerely, Debra Stock

I am saddened with the death of Mary Travers as she, Peter, and Paul continue to touch me through their music as I remember what I heard and saw in concert. These days I am touched by decades old albums. I only wish that the youth of today could hear their words and be inspired to make this world a better place...like I was. Skip DalleMolle (IL)

A true angel and songbird of the folk singing history of america. In high school I was part of a group the Four Winds (we referred to ourselves as Peter, Paul and Mary, Mary) two guys and two girls and we sang peter, paul and Mary songs in four pary harmony. Never matching the greatness, but what an inspiration mary was. God has another Angel for his Heavenly Choir.

The gift of harmony is hard to come by and Mary and her colleagues certainly had it. We loved the group as a kid and more so as an adult. Thank you for your talents and love for the peace movement and people. We sure need "PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON" now in these times. I still listen to it often
Thank you Mary.
September 24, 2009
I was introduced to PP&M when I was a very young child and grew up being the only kid in my grade to ever heard of them. I have since introduced my own children to the great music that they sang. I am very greatful for the chance to have heard the music and see the joy they put into peoples' lives, mine included. I truly believe my life is better because of your music and joy in doing so. I will continue to introduce my children and eventually grandchildren to your wonderful music. I am saddened because of your passing, but I believe that you are going to please God and all of heaven with your music just like you did us here on earth.

September 23, 2009
Mary sang with trio at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem in the 60"s. I was asked and drove her from the school to the airport. She was most easy to talk to and shared how much she enjoyed singing with Peter and Paul.
September 23, 2009
My heart goes out to Mary's family and to her "music" family as well. PP&M was my favorite group in 1962, and will always be #1 in their music field. Mary, this world was a sweeter place because of you. My sorrow is heavy because of your passing, but as Heaven's angels sing their songs of love and praise, they will be more precious because of you. Love you

I loved the PBS Specials that had Peter, Paul and Mary in them.. Anytime I heard their voices, especially Mary's I would sing along. Because I had so many chances to hear their singing since the 60's uo until today.. I had no idea that the groupr ended in 1971. Her music will go on forever!!!
September 23, 2009
I wish I could turn back the clock and feel the hope engendered by the music of Peter, Paul & Mary. I thoroughly enjoyed their performances on PBS during recent years. I will miss Mary, but she will forever be young in my mind.

Good bye to a great lady who reminded us that the passion for social justice we all felt in the sixties did not die. Nor will her gorgeous voice or the memories of her warm and genuine stage presence. A truly great entertainer who connected with us all. I feel so lucky to have seen PPM in concert with my own daughter and to have shared their music with both my daughters, as well as my friends in my youth.
September 23, 2009
"If I Had a Hammer" was my favorite song in 1962 when I was 19 years old. I was fortunate enough to see PP&M in concert at my university the very next year and couldn't wait until they sang the "Hammer Song" as we called it. Thank you for the memories. My sympathy to the family and friends. AM Tennessee

I was very young while Peter, Paul and Mary were popular, BUT I had older sisters that loved the group so the entire household knew who they were. My favs were Puff (the magic Dragon) and leaving on a Jet Plane...the good olde days have been gone a long time. But in my memory they live on...

September 23, 2009
You are going too be miss by a lot of persons. I liked your music that was the good old days.
September 23, 2009
I was very young in the sixties, however the music that Mary, Paul and Peter made was a cornerstone in my love of music. I sang Puff for my grandmother and she learned to play it by ear on the piano to accompany me. Mary also gave me comfort that tall women did exist. Every time I see a special that includes both old and new Peter, Paul & Mary I sit back and enjoy
September 23, 2009
Peter, Paul, and Mary were a big part of my life as I was in college when they first became popular. They made me become aware of the social unjustness in this world. I will miss you Mary but I will keep playing the albums that I have and remembering all the good that you have motivated.
September 23, 2009
Growing up in the '60's and '70's, Peter, Paul and Mary were definitely a part of our household. Whenever I here" Leaving on a Jet Plane" it still makes me sad, but now I feel the strength that the song also brings to make a difficult decision.

We are all happy to have been able to share a small part of her life. I hope that the scripture found at Romans chapter fifteen and verse four brings you as much comfort as it does me and encourages you all to continue reading your Bible daily to find the strength and endurance need at this time.
September 23, 2009
Puff the magic Dragon was my favorite song. I remember my mother playing it for me. When I hear that song it brings back so many wonderful memories of her and my childrenhood. I play that song for my nieces and nephews and they all love to hear it. When we are in the car they ask to play it and sing along with it. One of the kids in the daycare that i work at asked if Little jackie paper was afraid of puff Cuz he was dragon. I told him that Puff was a friendly dragon so we had to make Puff the Magic dragon in arts and crafts. I had to tell them why puff was a magic dragon. I send my prays out to Her family and I will miss her she was like family to me.
Puff the magic dragon will live on in my heart. My god bless you all. Mary was the best.
September 23, 2009
Rest in peace. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, the way your voice spoke for so many people, and for the way you shared in the years we grew to adulthood.
September 23, 2009
"All my trials, Lord, soon be over". Rest in peace sweet, gentle Mary. The music from you, Peter and Paul brought me great pleasure and helped me develop my own moral compass. Thank you.
September 23, 2009
Love and blessings to the family and friends of Mary. She had a voice that will live on in all their recordings. I loved singing along with the group in and out of class growing up here in Hawaii. I'd hammer out the love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land. Aloha, Mona Neill ( Makaha, Hawaii)
September 22, 2009

Her voice, talent and caring persona will always remain in our hearts and mind. History will hold a special place for her contribution to American Music in the early 60's. A beautiful life.

September 22, 2009
one of my favorite memories-PP&M at Convention Hall in the early 60s!
September 22, 2009
Puff the Magic Dragon...the first time I remember crying when I listened to a song...how sad that Little Jackie Paper had to grow up and I think about that now that my son is 17 and a Senior in H.S. It was also one of the first songs that I learned to play on my first guitar. The Marvelous Toy was one of the songs I looked forward to hearing every Christmas (my son and I actually had the good fortune to meet Tom Paxton). I always count myself lucky growing up during the 50's, 60's and 70's. It was the greatest time for music and Mary Travers was one of the influential artists during this time. Some of the only music that my Dad actually never asked us to turn down :) Our condolences to Mary's Family and Peter and Paul. She'll be in our prayers.
September 22, 2009
I'll always remember Peter,Paul, and Mary.Your harmonies and your vison of changing the wrongs of that decade.Rest in peace sweet lady and sing beautiful music to the Lord as you did here on earth.

My childhood heart aches as it would for any close family member who gave so much without asking for anything in return. As much as my heart is saddened, I am not able to find the words she/Peter/Paul could to express my deepest sympathy. She will remain in mine and the future generations of my family for as long as I am able to share the music of such an ensemble.
September 22, 2009
Thank you, Mary, for sharing your lovely voice for so many years. You will be missed. Helen North, Seattle

I was so happy to attend your concerts with Peter and Paul in Boston! A Peter, Paul and Mary concert was always a JOY with audience sing-alongs.
It was always my dream to be on stage singing with you....I'm sure we'll all get the chance some day in Heaven!
Mary, thank you for sharing your gifts with us. My love and sympathies to Erika and Alicia Mary O'Connor, Belmont, MA

I was fortunate enough to see Peter, Paul & Mary in concert several times. Paul's "Wedding Song" was part of my wedding in 1979. Thank goodness for Pittsburghers that a local station still plays your songs on a regular basis. Condolences to the group and Mary's family.

Sincerely,
September 22, 2009

Travers family,

My deepest condolences on the loss of your loved one. The group, Peter, Paul, and Mary was one of my favorites and I loved the voice of the only female in the group. Their music is timeless. God has said that "no one will say I am sick". And he promises a resurrection of all those in the "memorial tombs". His words in the scriptures at Isaiah 33:24 and John 5:28 bring us comfort and give us hope.
September 22, 2009
Mary, you are responsible for many hours of pleasure for my family and myself. Your talents were a treasure to many of us who appreciated your heart and passion in your work. God bless you and may you rest in peace.
September 22, 2009
I send my deepest sympathy to the
Travers family. Mary's singing was simply beautiful. The Peter Paul and Mary group were my favorite in the 1960's and still is today. She will be missed by alot of people. May she rest in peace

September 22, 2009
My first "album" was also Peter, Paul and Mary's first. It was Mary's voice that I hear when I think of "If I Had A Hammer." Lemon Tree was very pretty but not as pretty as was Mary.
September 22, 2009
To Mary's friends and family my deepest sympathy to you all.

We have lost one beautiful voice.
September 22, 2009
I grew up in the 60's and Peter, Paul and Mary were my favorite folk group. When my son was born, we enjoyed the Peter, Paul and Mommy albums too. Thank you Mary for your beautiful voice and sharing your life with us.
God Bless...Linda
September 22, 2009
Me, Summer 1963, my first transistor radio, "If I had a Hammer". This 8 year-olds crush on a good-looking blond beatnik girl on a record jacket. What a Sound! What a Group! What a Time! Mary, you have never left my fondest thoughts.
September 22, 2009
I was a part of the 60's She was the anthem we marched to and the song that gave us courage. She will be missed.
September 22, 2009
She now leaves us on the wings of angels.......we will miss you, Mary.
September 22, 2009

September 22, 2009
I mnver saw A Peter Patl & Mary concert but I did enjoy their music. Many were to believe that many of their songs were un protest in large due to the Vietnam War, and I find that to this very day hard to velieve that. Truly a wonderful voice to listen to, RIP Mary you are now with the Amgels.
September 22, 2009
My parents grew up in the 60s, but they disliked most of the music of the day. I grew up listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary. When my children were young, we'd play the two-CD set as we drove from MI to MA. The children adored "If I Had A Hammer" and "Puff the Magic Dragon."

I always appreciated the tonal qualities of Mary's voice. Her deep, rich voice was a pleasure to listen to solo or in the delicate harmonies of Peter, Paul, and Mary. She will be missed.
September 22, 2009
Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us, Mary.
September 22, 2009
My parents listened to Peter, Paul and Mary consistantly. Mary was/is therefore a part of MY life. I will forever listen to her voice with fond memories!
September 21, 2009
../ I met MARY at Trinity University in San Antonio mid 60's. Her beautiful hair mesmerized me. She told me she IRONED IT. What a great talent .. I am deeply saddened by her death. Her voice along with Peter's and Paul's will live on in harmony forever. Love you Mary.
September 21, 2009
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
September 21, 2009
I shall forever feel blessed knowing that the world is a better place because of Peter, Paul and Mary. Thank you for sharing Mary with us! God Bless and let's all keep her music alive and be mindful of preserving folk music and each do our part in promoting peace!

Where has all my Mary gone? To sing in eternity... to brighten heaven.
September 21, 2009
I'm very saddened to hear of the death of a great songbird such as Mary travers. I'll miss seeing and hearing her and peter and paul in concert on PBS as I havd many times in the past. You'll be greatly missed by all your fans young and old as I know you will be greatly missed in the music world.
September 21, 2009
My thoughts and prayers go to your family. One hundred years from now, people will still be singing "If I Had a Hammer," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Puff the Magic Dragon," and more. And your work for peace and justice will still be an inspiration.

Mary, your native Louisville still remembers and loves you.
September 21, 2009
I was saddened to hear about Mary passing away. I am glad that I got to hear her along with Peter and Paul on PBS many times or even if they were on a show as guests. My favorite song is "Leaving on a jet plane". I believe Mary had a wonderful talent singing as well playinng instruments. She will be greatly missed.
September 21, 2009
Please accept our heartfelt sympathies for your Mary. Her smile, her voice, her energy, her love, her faith, her values and her music will last forever. The CD's, video's, cassettes, and records will continue playing in our home for as long as we last. Mary's friendship with Peter and Paul was a blessing for them and for all who heard them sing and what they stood for. We will never forget. Thank you dear Mary for all you gave us. Sing on, sing loud, sing true, dear angel and sing with God.
September 21, 2009
Please accept our sympathies on the loss of your beloved Mary. Her smile, her voice, her energy, her music, her values, helped bring us through the 60's and more. We will keep her in our hearts and continue her life with the beautiful music she gave us which we play on CD's, cassettes and records. Her friendship with Peter and Paul through all these years is a blessing and a reminder to others that what you truly believe is a dream come true. Sing, dear Angel, sing with God.
September 21, 2009
Our deepest sympathy to the family and to Peter and Paul. Mary is timeless, thank God we have her beautiful face and voice to always remind us of her!! SO glad we went to the Palace in Waterbury 2 years ago to see PP&M perform.........it was a beautiful evening, especially to see Mary out on stage again...we all sang Happy Birthday to her. Mary came into our chocolate shop in Guilford, CT some years ago now and we all knew who she was with that beautiful stature....bigger than life......she was "antiquing" that day. What an honor to meet her! "Leavin' On a Jet Plane" was one of our favorite PP&M songs because we were separated by the Atlantic until we got back together and married! Mary will always be in our minds and ears, with that beautiful voice and spirit!! David & Ingrid Collins, Madison, CT

When my husband and I were on our college campus in 1964- Central Washington State College in Ellensburg, WA we were treated to the most exciting and entertaining evening as we sang along and enjoyed the ever famous:
Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Thanks for the memories that will stay with us forever.

To the family,
I loved the music...I will remember the words and sounds and the feelings in my heart forever.
She will be missed
September 21, 2009
Growing up in the 60's, I always thought how remarkable it was to see Mary holding her own performing with Peter and Paul. I never thought of her as a female singer with two guys. She was equal to them, and shared the limelight. She was an inspiration for many young women, and she did it with grace and style. And that beautiful singing voice...!

To Mary's Family:

I would like to offer my condolences to the family. Death is such an enemy to life, and you know it's not a natural process planned by God because of pain that's felt. (All good and perfect gifts comes from him) Words can't erase the pain you must feel, but, I hope that my few words my serve as a source of encouragement and comfort.

I recall her music growing up in the sixties.

Her records had a message for all. The group had a name that brought to mind the names of the followers of Christ Jesus. Peter had a lot of Love for Christ, Paul was blessed to write 14 books of the Holy Bible. Mary the Mother of Jesus. (What a priviledge)! Did their message have a connection? Being an avid Bible reader, I understand the or feel that some of the ideas the group sang about, was words or ideas and thoughts found in the Bible.

The group wanted the best for all walks of life, and that what Peter and Paul preached about. Through God's Kindgom, all will benefit from the promises that's outlined in his kingdom arrangement. This arrangement has promised life in the future, and Mary can be part of that promise.
(John 5:28,29) (Revelation 21:3,4)

For the Love of Neighbor and Friends.
September 21, 2009

To the family:

Although born in the sixties, I recall her music as a child and appreciating how it crossed all barriers of life. We thank you for sharing her with us over the years. All her photos show tenderness in her eyes and smile, and she will be missed by all whose lives she touched through her words and song.

How fortunate to know that she is now in God's memory and will soon benefit from the promises that he has outlined in his Kingdom arrangement.

Take Care,
September 21, 2009

I loved her beautiful voice and how it sang of social injustices. God's Kingdom will soon right all the wrongs from the past and the present. (Daniel 2:44) God's Son, Jesus Christ, spoke of a wonderful resurrection hope for Mary. (John 5:28,29) I look forward to her singing again in the new earthly paradise that is to come.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Travers after a 4th of July concert on the common in the early 80s. We had a lovely conversation while watching the fireworks from City Hall. I just happened to be the guest of a friend who had a press pass. But Mary was friendly and genuine. She spoke about her daughters and said that she loved being a mother. It was such a thrill for me and she was so down to earth, gracious and lovely.

My condolences to Mary's family.
Rest in Peace, Mary.

I grew up with the music of this wonderful trio. Although I was born a bit late, their music was my music. I have now raised my own family and our 2 children learned all their songs from watching and listening to Peter, Paul and Mommy. Thank you, Mary, for your gifts to this world. You may be gone, but will never be forgotten.

So many images flash through my mind. Peter, Paul and Mary who were the voices of my youth still resonate with me today and will forever. Every year I could make it I would go to see them in concert at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT. I knew Mary lived in CT and remember when I heard she had a child at Danbury Hospital. And there she passed. I will miss her prescence here on earth, but her voice will live in my life still.

To the family of Mary Travers-Thanks for sharing her with us all of these years. I grew up listening to Peter, Paul and Mary and then listened to them with my children. I have some wonderful photos of her and I from a hospice benefit in Michigan 18 years ago. May your memories and God comfort and bless you!

To the family and friends of Mary Travers,
I'm very sorry for your loss. Mary has always held a special place in my heart. Nobody could belt out a song like she could. You could always count on her to put her own personality and passion into a song, especially the passion. She was not afraid of what people would say. She gave me courage. Rest in Peace, Mary. Hope to see you on the other side.

Mary Travers was the voice I sang along with since I first heard the group in the 1960's. I believe yours was my first albumn as well. Saw a concert in Saratoga, NY when I was 18, and then again in Clearwater FL in the 1990's. I cried tears of joy to see my favorite all time group. Now my heart is saddened for your physical loss, Mary, but I know your spirit will live forever, as well as your beautiful contribution to us all. Thank you forever.
September 20, 2009
I awoke the morning following her passing to know that Mary Travers had left us. I cried for many hours and have felt pure grief ever since.
As a child the first 45 I owned was Puff the Magic Dragon. PP&M brought to me a profound love of dragons that has carried me throughout my life.
Mary, may your crossing the Rainbow Bridge be swift.

Love & Light

I was a fan and great admirer since 1963 when I was 10 years old, my
parents drove me that year for 3 hours in the worst blizzard Kentucky had had for years, to get to my first, but not my last, concert. I loved her
so much. Upon hearing of her death, I pulled out my old scrapbooks of articles and photos I had colledted over the years. I also recalled a
line I heard in a true story years ago..."There are other worlds to sing
in." Lynn Laughlin, Nashville, Tennessee

Mary was a beautiful singer. We did a Fall Follies at our church several years ago & I had the pleasure of being Mary Travers. Our Pastor Paul Moots was Paul & Peter Ramusson was Peter. We did our best & loved their music. Sincerely, Mary Spinks, Mt. Sterling, Ohio
September 20, 2009
To Mary's family and friends, my greatest sympathy. I spent my college years singing her songs in a college group...the contributions she made to music in general, and folk music specifically are enormous. And please as people list the ppm albums, do not forget the gorgeous album she did solo with such awesome songs as "the first time ever I saw your face" etc.. she was truly a gift to not only lovers of music, but to all the laborers and peace activists who use those songs to empower themselves. She will be sorely missed, and never forgotten.
September 20, 2009
I learned to play guitar because of the PP&M songs. Mary was a great inspiration to me, then and now. Condolences to your family, you will be missed.

Dear Mary: I grew up with your music and feel better for it. You will be missed. Rest in Peace & God Bless.
September 19, 2009
I was three, possibly four when I have my earliest recollection of knowing I really liked a certain song. The song I heard was Puff The Magic Dragon. Having only seen the Lennon Sisters on the Lawrence Welk show, though there were four of them, they rarely moved while they sang. I remember being mesmerized when I finally saw Mary singing on the t.v., swinging her head back and fourth as she did, I just fell in love with her then and there. I saw the film clips today on PBS of her signing and it took me back, to that moment standing in front of the T.V. and just being stunned by her beauty, and active style of attacking the music with her heart and soul. Thank you Mary, Paul and Peter for introducing me to music. You are all why I play the guitar and sing today. The heavens are filled with a voice of an angel today for sure. Belt it out for St. Peter Mary. We love and venerate you, you were a treasure and a gift to the world. Gary b. saline, michigan. You will be dearly missed, but not a year when by without singing me signing Puff, or Blowing in the Wind or If I Had A hammer. How rich you made our lives., You made the world a better place. May the lord bless and keep you, your reward will be great I am sure.
September 19, 2009
Many will feel the loss of Mary in this world. She used her gifts of music and heart to touch the hearts and lives of those who heard her message. Throughout her life she sung out for freedom and justice, and she gave hope to many of us. From my rocky youth until now, her voice and spirit have provided comfort and inspiration. She is the perfect role model for those of us in our senior years, to keep working and speaking out for critical human issues. My prayers are with you.
September 19, 2009
My deepest condolences to the family. I so admired her wonderful voice. Thank you Mary, for giving music to my memories. May you rest in peace.
September 19, 2009

September 19, 2009
As a 24 year old fan I had the incredible good luck to share a seat next to Mary on a flight to Boston from N.Y.C. in 1974, I'm sure I drove her nuts with my questions and my overall excitement to be sitting next to what I considered an icon. Nevertheless she was most gracious and nice to me and I'll never forget that. R.I.P. Mary and to all who loved her God Bless. Jim Kelley Cape Coral FL.

My prayers are with you all; family and friends, at this time of Mary's passing. Her music filled my soul starting as a young child in an alcoholic home when the nights seemed to never end. PP&M sang against wars and conflict in Vietnam and other places but my war raged nightly in my home due to the alcohol- their music got me through these battles at home. I learned to play the guitar at 8 or 9 yrs. of age using their "Here's How to Play" by PP&M. I thank her and the group for always being a solace on those long nights. I went to a concert in Park City when my deaf daughter was young and we sat right in front of the stage-I remember Mary throughout the concert making eye contact with me and my daughter as I tried to sign their songs to her as best I could. I owe to PP&M more than they'll ever know.
Thanks to Mary's family for sharing her with the world!
God Bless you!
September 19, 2009
What a marvelous voice - what a marvelous talent - what a marvelous person. God Rest Her Soul...Mary will be dearly missed. My condolences to her family. God be with all of you...
September 19, 2009
To the family and friends of Mary Travers, please accept my sincere condolences; I share in your loss. Mary was a unique talent. That she rose to prominence as an arranger and interpreter of music at a time when the singer-songwriter was in ascendance is a testament to her sheer musicality. With the simplest of instrumentation, three voices and two guitars, she was able to paint the full palette of the human condition. Mary brought energy, vitality, and authenticity to her music. Her performances elevated the art of folk music and more, they elevated the human spirit. I will miss her.
September 19, 2009
My sincere sympathy to Mary's family and close friends. Her voice was wonderful and her song "For Erika" expresses the love all grandmothers feel for their grandchildren. I cherish the memories of the three concerts I saw from the "60's" to 2007. We grew older together. Rest in peace.
September 19, 2009
My condolences to the family of Mary Travers. R.I.P.
She brought us many hours of wonderful listening and I will always cherish all of the Peter, Paul & Mary Albums that we have collected.
Saw them several times in concert and I never walked away disappointed.
September 19, 2009
I grew up on the music of Peter, Paul and Mary......My first real memory of music is watching Captain Kangaroo and he showed a story book to "Puff, the Magic Dragon." Mary had the courage of her convictions. I introduced both of my children and both of my grandchildren to the music of Peter, Paul and Mary. My prayers go out to Peter and Noel Paul and the the PPM family. To her husband and children, thank you for sharing Mary with us.
September 19, 2009
My heart is saddened by the silence of Mary Travers, such an inspiration for songs to sing to my grandchildren. I send my condolences to her family, as well as her extended singing family.

Mary's voice has touched me in a deep way for decades. I have shared PP&M songs with my two adult children, my grandson and the pre-school children I have taught for 22 years. The voices and message of PP&M has been and continues to be one of change, conviction and harmony for us all.
The comfort is that her message and songs will live on in each of us, in our children, grandchildren and in her family.

Thank you, Mary, for making this wold a better place with your voice and with your deeds. You will live on in our hearts forever.
September 19, 2009
Oh babe, I hate to see you go. I do remember the incredible electricity of the two PP&M performances at the New Orleans Loyola Unversity Field House in the late 60s which I attended with my father; and also around 1995 at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival where PP&M played with Pete Seeger, the last concert my father saw before he died.
September 19, 2009
Strong, intelligent, kind, witty, and inspiring....that is how I will remember you. Mary Travers.
I saw Peter Paul and Mary twice in concert and left, each time, feeling so good and hopeful about the world.
Your beautiful alto voice is silenced now....but you gave so much joy to so many over the years. So much joy...and grace and hope. May your family be comforted knowing your voice was a true gift to our world.
September 19, 2009
She had a wonderful voice and great sense of civic awareness. May God Bless her and keep him at his table up there. My most sincere sympathy to her friends and family around the world. Her fans will me her as I do, but just think of her as having found Puff on Honnalee. WFC
September 19, 2009
My sincerest condolences go out to all of Mary's family and friends, especially Peter and Paul, who've lost their beloved singing partner. I loved hearing Mary sing since I was a child (I'm 34) as a solo artist and especially with Peter and Paul. I have several of their CD's that I will keep forever. Mary was one of the greatest singers I know. Mary will be missed but not forgotten.

Thank you for your wonderful music, Mary. You fought a brave battle and now sing with the angels in heaven. You will be missed but not forgotten.

May you rest in peace. God Bless you, Mary.

With Respect and Gratitude,

Lemon Tree, Blowin In The Wind , Puff The Magic Dragon , If I Had A Hammer ,and Leaveing On A Jet Plane were my favorites. Rest in peace Mary and may you sing with the choir of angles.
September 19, 2009
Mary is in the arms of her Lord! She's free from leukemia, may the Lord bless her family beyond measure. She along with Peter and Paul brought great joy to billions and billions of people with their music and her such beautiful voice. May the Lord bless the Travers family.
September 19, 2009
I was one of those lucky enough to grow up listening to PP & M and then to share them with my own children. We made it almost an annual tradition to go to see them at Westbury Music Fair here on Long Island. My sons loved the tradition (was it unique to this venue?) of having the children go up on stage bringing flowers. We were to go about a year and a half or two years ago, when the concert was postponed and then canceled due to Mary's health struggles. How heartbreaking to think that my kids will never again be able to give flowers Mary Travers! Thank you, Mary (and of course, Peter and Noel Paul) for the decades of love, music, and activism that inspired two generations of our family! And our deepest sympathies to Noel Paul, Peter, and your loving friends and family.

I hope you will accept one last entry on my behalf. My last entry was a poem written in grief,I'd like to add a positive note if you will allow. I think It would make Peter,Paul, and Mary flattered to know about this. I enter my friend's home only to hear(long before the famous rappers remade it) a remake of "leaving on a jet plane". It was playing on her video; her baby daddy's show. When they saw my face,at first they were alarmed-then I explained my blood relation and my love of Mary and her music etc. (what was in my first entry.)I had an impromptu audition w/coaxing-later(sang the original Jet Plane) was asked if I'd do back-ups, but I was due to start my chemotherapy. I noticed youngsters walking around singing the song-thinking it was brand new.My little friend said "my Daddy wrote that" I replied Your daddy wrote a great remake of my 3rd cousin's group's song. I think it would have made her and them happy and flattered to have heard it and know how much the youngsters loved it all over again. Sorry to be so long winded.Thank you for allowing me to share so much. God bless.
September 19, 2009
To one of my very favorites, as a singer and as a person. As many of us did, you took a stand for what you believe in. I still love the "heart" music of Peter, Paul and Mary. Rest In Peace, beautiful lady.
September 19, 2009
Front and center on the first row of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in the mid-1980's for a PP&M concert. Unforgettable! PP&M spoke for, and represented, the sentiments of the "peace and love" generation. Their courage to stand for then-unpopular causes was an inspiration, and their music will live on as a testimonial thereto.
September 19, 2009
As I am writing this so many good memories are resurfacing....The music will live on and on with so many people. Thanks PP&M for a lifetime of wonderful music. Mary, God bless. You will be missed.

"It seems in a moment, your whole world can shatter-
like morning dreams they just disappear,
like dust in your hand falling to the floor
how can life ever be the same,
it's all too easy to take so much for granted
but it's so hard to find the word to say
like a castle in the sand the water takes away
how can life ever be the same.
September 19, 2009

My deepest condolences to the Travers family. Mary was a very special person and a great icon to the music industry.
September 19, 2009
My children were raised on music and especially PPM. When my son was very small his favorite song was Puff TM Dragon. On one Drs visit he was due for shots and I had to leave the room, I told the nurses he loved that song it helped soothe him. They gave me a sympathetic nod and nudged me out so they could do their job. I stood outside the door and soon heard his cries of pain. They got louder when I heard two soft voices singing Ricky's song louder and louder. The crying stopped, that's the magic of Puff!

Prayers for your family Mary, you will be missed but we thank you for your gift!
September 19, 2009
My prayers are for the Travers family at this sad time. Working through grief can takes time and patience. The Bible tells us: Draw close to God, and he will draw to you.

My condolences to Mary's family and friends.

I first saw PPM in concert in Buffalo in 1963. As a young lad of 20 I was stimulated by their energy, enthusiasm and talent. Saw them 2 years later in the same venue and continued to follow them as their music was released. I attended a solo concert by Mary Travers at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford in 1985. What a memorable evening - just her, her bassist and about 200 fans. She had a special way of communicating with her audience, both musically and verbally. I spoke with her afterward in the lobby. In 2004, saw her at the Warner Theater in Torrington with Peter and Paul in concert - 41 years after I first experienced their magic. Mary, may you rest in peace.
September 19, 2009
To this day I loved the music of Peter, Paul, and Mary. I went to UTUBE and listened to all of their songs and cried. It's the end of an era and so many people we admired and grew up with are dying now. R.I.P. Mary, go sing with the angels.

I was always told from a child I was given a talent that came from this relative:(fear, anger and disbelief
are all a part of grief)
Through raining veiled sight
this I write
not my best
but til it's out,I can't rest
please don't misunderstand
the words that came to my hand
I don't know why I seem
to be in a fog
with the loss of a dream.
It all started
w/beautiful music
and a lady so kindhearted
I always knew we'd meet
even asked mom to help w/the feat
but everywhere I tried,defeat
so on thursday,I have back the internet
&maybe the info i'll get
only to find
the lady so kind
was so long, so close
but what hurts most
I missed her by one day
as she passed yesterday.
It is no longer about sharing, family&music
but that she has been so sick
I could have comforted her
for i,also,am dying of cancer w/out a cure
My heart is broken apart
she was always,in my life,a part
she knew of me
but we never did meet,see
I feel such a loss
how could God our Boss
add this strife
to all our life
I have been so strained
It is months it has rained
mind&body so drained
Now that Mary is gone
It's like the last straw to try & go on.
I was handling the stress
of my life turning a mess
even facing dying on the street due to the IRS
enforcing an old law they didn't before
but now the state is poor
&they want all the years @ once paid
w/penalties&interest daily made.
after all my schooling
I could easily pay the ruling
but I can't work now
and have no other way how
Even facing all that was OK
Somehow I broke&find it hard to go on
with my 3rd cousin gone
I don't know w/all my problems why this was the straw
that took my minds coping&opened all the sores raw
But from what I was told family through
by actions and words;Mary knew
& it rings true
the material things aren't what imports most
but blessings given by the heavenly holy ghost.

God Bless you Mary, You were a treasure and we all will miss you so much. You are singing with God's angels now. Thank you for your special hugs with all my sisters. I will never forget you. Becky from Maine

I was but a mere lad of 13 when my aunt took me to see Peter, Paul and Mary at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1966. To this day I can still picture the event.

My deepest condolences to Mary's family, to Peter and Paul, and to all whose lives she so deeply touched. We have lost a part of our being with her passing.

I believe she's now singing to Little Jackie Paper, who is sitting next to Puff, and her sweet melodies are "Blowin In The Wind."

Thank you Mary. Goodbye.

I loved the music of the trio and their gentle way of "protesting". Every song was a hit in my opinion, but I really loved "If I Had A Hammer" and "Puff The Magic Dragon" for the totally opposite presentations (strong and vibrant for Hammer and soft and lullaby sounding for Puff). Mary you were one of my favorite singers from the late 50's on. Rest in true peace now.

Love and peace to the family,

Very sad news, I grew up with folk music including Peter Paul and Mary 's style which was so different from the English folk singers of the time. This took me back to so many happy times listening to PPM and the unrest of the 60's and 70's which they so well expressed through their music. Mary will be very much missed, such an icon of my growing up. T Hartley, Birmingham , England.

Our family had the wonderful opportunity to hear the music of Peter Paul & Mary not once but twice at the Maine Center of the Arts. I can still recall singing Puff The Magic Dragon and looking at my wife and sons singing along. It seems like just yesterday.

At one point they came out individually and told short stories about their lives and Mary had the whole auditorium laughing loud and long.
She will be sadly missed not just because of her singing (which was amazing) but her smile and and her sense of joy for living always made those around her feeling that much better.

She will be deeply and sadly missed!

A PIECE OF MY LIFE HAS BEEN LOST- A WONDERFUL WOMAN WITH
A BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT AND VOICE. YEARS AGO MARY CAME UP TO ME AT THE AIRPORT IN A RESTAURANT, GAVE ME A BIG SMILE AND ASKED HOW I WAS DOING. I NEVER FORGOT THAT. DOWN TO EARTH .
HER MUSIC AND LEGACY WILL LIVE ON - GOD BLESS, MARY

I had the wonderful opportunity to see peter paul and mary live at the University of maine (twice). i am so glad i did. both my wife and i along with our sons alex and brian sang with the trio but what i recall the most was when they came out individually and told stories about their amazing careers.
mary told a couple of stories about her family life that had the whole auditorium laughing loud and long. She will be sadly missed. This country lost an amazing singer but more importantly a wonderful person.

I was so saddened to hear of Ms. Mary Travers passing. I remember seeing her on the Freedom Rides along with her commrades, Peter and Paul, I just loved their music from the 60's. I was also a child of the 60's. I was also pleased to be able to catch them on PBS Specials within the last few years, I thought they had just faded away but to my surprise they were still around. Mary, you brought a lot of musical joy to the world and you will be greatly missed. May you Rest In Peace.

Mary Travers.. Such a wonderful name of probably one of the finest people that ever lived upon this world.
Such a beauty in all her actions and beliefs. Peter and Paul have truly lost a very fine sister, We ourselves have lost a very perecious gift.
Jesus I believe is holding her very carefully in his arms and smiling as he says " Welcome home my beautiful Child..." I do believe that she will be and will make such a wonderful Angel..
September 18, 2009
I will always remember Peter, Paul, and Mary as part of my childhood. I grew up with them. Puff The Magic Dragon was the first song I learned all the words too. I always thought Mary was so pretty and gentle.
Peace~

September 18, 2009
peter paul and mary were part of my life from a pretty early age. i would always sing along with mary's part, because she always sounded the best. once my friend told me that she wished i liked mary less, because my singing was in no way nearly as good as hers, but that no one could hear her, because i always sang louder than the radio, and made her harder to hear. the world lost a sweet person and singer, she will be sorely missed. may she rest in peace with the angels, and join in their songs.
September 18, 2009
Mary's voice and that of Peter and Paul will live in my heart forever. I am so saddened to hear of her passing. We will miss that wonderful smile as well as her unforgettable voice.

Without them there may have been no equal rights. Without them we may have never seen the atrocities of apartheid. Without them we may not have a President of color. Without them we may have never known that there can and must be a kinder gentler world.

Mary was my inspiration, She and her "brothers" Noel and Peter are my moral compass, my spiritual leaders and my music teachers.

Most of us can only hope our lives have a fraction of the impact that hers has had on this world.

To her "brothers" Noel and Peter, know that I pray that God comforts you in such great a loss. Gentlemen, keep up the music somehow, for through that she will live and love as long as we do.

God has blessed us through this exceptional woman that we have known as Mary Travers. And the answer always will be "peace, justice, and equality and all of working for these things together." She will always be with us as long as we do that which she taught us to do.

Emma Lee Reed Hartle, Pittsburgh, PA

I grew up with the music of Peter, Paul and Mary and will never forget the impression that she has made on my life. I had tickets last year to see her along with my parents and best friends at The State Theatre but, unfortunately, the show had to be cancelled due to her illness. Although I missed seeing her live, I am so thankful that my parents got to see her at the State Theatre a few years ago. I know she is singing in Heaven and I will always cherish my Peter, Paul and Mary CD's!

Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary was the vocals for the group. Even though I was not around in the era, I love her music, especially the song "If I had a Hammer". We need a hammer to bat out injustice, oppression, and ostricism.

We send our condolences as long admirers and devoted fans of Mary.We were fortunate to see her perform several times at live concerts and have a huge collection of the groups songs. We will miss her greatly. The Kings, Waterville,Maine

I learned how to play guitar in a folk group. My first song was blowing in the wind. Leaving on a jet plane came soon after and of course Puff. My friend Bill Shontz told me if you want to learn harmony listen to PPM, then loaned me all his albums. As a female vocalist I emulate Mary's strength and femininity and sincerity.
September 18, 2009
I love you Mary Travers....... Rest in Peace and May God Bless You.
September 18, 2009
Mary Travers and PPM's music was so mcuh a part of my life in the 1960's and 1970's at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Walking down the halls on the 13th floor of the George Washington Tower you could hear the voices and music of PPM, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Arlo Guthrie. The simple and direct lyrics and melodies resonated deep within me. The beauty and clarity of Peter Paul & Mary spoke to my heart and the best parts of me. It motivated me to participate in our society and country. Thank you Mary. You are a beautiful person who has touched many, many, many lives. Your message, your warmth, your songs, your voice lives on. Thank God for your life. We are blessed to have had you with us for so many years.

Mary Travers, Peter and Paul were a huge part of my childhood with their heart-warming music. I only wish the chldren of today had such people to emulate.... Their music will live on in all our hearts.....My condolences ;(
September 18, 2009
I was so sorry to hear about Mary's death. There will always be a place in all our hearts for her and her friends Peter and Paul. I grew up listening to their songs. I know that she is with Jesus and that is sweeter than anything on this earth. .
September 18, 2009
Triplets arrive in this world. Peter, Paul, and Mary became triplets when their voices blended and their music became a voice of sanity when the world of the 60's was just too crazy. My husband and I adored PP&M. Our children and our grandchildren have grown up listening and singing their songs. There is a large ache in my heart for the trio I will no longer hear blend their voices together as one. All your "trials, Lord," now are over. Rest well, Mary. Peace to you Peter, Paul and Mary's family.

I fell in love with it, and still have it, and pretty much everything else you recorded. I loved your music, and also what it and you stood for. You were an excellect roll model for honesty. All anyone can hope is that we live long enough to make a noticeable difference in the world. Mary achieved that at a very young age; and with her beauty and grace, made Americans proud in the way she cared, the way she sang, and the way she conducted herself. We were lucky enough to have her in a free country for years. I'm glad many of us noticed. Love to the pretty blond girl with the best harmonys this side of heaven.Sincerly TreeBrian

Thank you PPM for your contributions to my life. Mary, you and the Family are in Prayer. I will miss your beautiful voice!
September 18, 2009
My deepest sympathy to Mary's family and friends. I know Peter and Noel are without words. I have loved PP&M for 44 years, my life was shaped by their music and political views of the 60's. I can't imagine this world we live in without precious Mary. I saw PP&M when i was 14 years old in Tampa, Florida. In fact I skipped school and stayed all day at the Convention Center, hoping to get a glance. I was so touched with their music and views for the times. I had the pleasure of meeting all three in Austin, Tx and at Kerrville Folk Festival. Mary was a very important part of my life, and I'm blessed for all the words and music of her life. I just want to say Thank You to her family for sharing her with all of us. She was truly a shining light in the 60's, and continued to shine her whole life long. May your candle continue to burn forever. Thank you Mary for all the sacrifices you made for what you believed, it will never be forgotten.
September 18, 2009
We were lucky enough to be given tickets to Peter, Paul and Mary's concert in March in Shippensburg. It was a gift for our fortieth anniversary from our children. It was the greatest gift we could have gotten as we have always loved your singing and raised our children on your messages in your songs. Our condolences to those who will miss Mary even more than we can imagine, Peter and Paul and her family. Thank you for many, many wonderful hours of listening to you.

Peter, Paul, and Mary were an icon of the 60's. I was in a folk group at that time and performed some of their songs. It wasn't just about the music, it was about the message. Though Mary is no longer with us, her spirit and music will live on to inspire and to teach. May this bring comfort to her family and to us all.
September 18, 2009
Mary, thank you (along with Peter and Paul) for inspiring me to love folk music and for making it a treasured part of my life. May you rest in peace.

To my friend Ethan,
Above and beyond the music and message in song of Peter, Paul & Mary, what I cherish most are the times that you and Mary would come into Ring's End in Bethel, and we would talk about the things that touched our personal lives. Mary was a guiding light to our generation, and helped us all understand the value of peace and love. My wife and I saw Peter Paul and Mary in NJ 2 years ago. To the end of our days, we will always be inspired by the memory of Mary walking up on stage with her cane and beautifully rendering Leaving on a Jet Plane.

In the early sixties when I begin to question race relations in this country and became angry about how I was treated as a young black man, one of the events that tempered my anger and motivated me to work for equal civil rights was listening to PPM singing "Blowing In the Wind". Hearing them sing that song and watching them interact with black artists gave me hope that things could change.
I wish her family and Peter & Paul well.
September 18, 2009
I was listening to "Leaving on a Jet plane" while reading this. I will always be grateful for her music. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

How blessed our world was to have had Mary:
Your music gave us words to speak, ideals to follow, and melodies to lift our spiirits.
By personal example and song, you challenged us to "carry on" for peace and justice, even through the tough times.
We raised our children by and with your songs.
In countless ways, in far corners of our country and the world, your voice and song continues.
We all sing on...

With love, gratitude, prayers, peace - to Mary's family, Noel, Paul, PP&M staff and family

She was a guiding light of my generation. The music still resonates in my head and I'll always remember believing as they did; singing as they did and marching as they did. This is a trememdous loss and one which will be felt for many years. God bless the family and the friends; the loss is devastating.

When I heard that Peter, Paul and Mary were booked to play Bethel Woods, I rushed out and got tickets. Sadly, when I heard that Mary was too ill to be there, I gave them away. It just wouldn't be the same. My heart goes out to her family. Now I know what it sounds like when the angels sing.

Mary,
A part of me died today. You were part of my youth and continued admiration for you through the years. Having seen you three times in concert and taking my sons later to Chatauqua Institute in New York it seemed full circle. You will be missed so.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. The love of family and friends will encourage you in the days and months to come. May the scriptures give you hope and strength. Psalm 34:18 - "God is near to those that are broken-hearted; and to those that are crushed in spirit he saves. You are in my prayers.

Mary Travers opened my eyes to the possibility that I could sing and play guitar - folk music has been solace and lifeline for many years. Only two weeks ago I played "Leaving On A Jet Plane" for a small group. I will play it again tonight and think of Mary Travers, a woman who gave a lonely girl hope and strength, belief in dreams. I hope she believed in Heaven, for she was an Angel and will be there now, singing still in her clear, strong voice. I send prayers for her family in their sorrow and loss, and hope that the knowledge of how she blessed so many people will comfort them, as she surely must have comforted her own family before she finally left them.

September 18, 2009
To Mary Travers' family,

I have loved Mary's work and passion for both social causes and folk music since she first recorded with Peter, Paul and Mary. She (and they) have been an inspiration to me in my life. Mary's kindness and love of the earth and humanity will always stand out for me because that is who she was as a person. I have prayed for her over the years as she struggled with her health. My prayers are with you as you grieve her loss. Thank you for sharing Mary with the world. We live in a better place because of her grace. God bless you, Mary.

September 18, 2009
Thank you for having the courage of your convictions and for all the good you have done in this world.

The music you have given us will remain and we will still delight in hearing PP&M. You are our youth and our old age - timeless with your messages of social relevance and caring. Keep on making beautiful music in heaven. It's the only thing I look forward to hearing if and when I get there.
September 18, 2009
I am very saddened at Mary's death. I saw her perform many times in Denver and my husband and I both love her music. Her music touched the old and young and we are all better for it. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Joanne Sutton

Even today, at age 63. I can vividly recall being at your concerts in Charlotte, N C and being captivated by your presence on stage. Your music still moves me today. You will be missed greatly, but your memory certainly will live on in your music, because great music goes on forever.
September 18, 2009
Thank you, Mary, for bringing greater justice to this country and for making the world more beautiful with your music.

Now you are singing with the angels. Love and Godspeed.
September 18, 2009
Mary,
Thank you for overcoming your fears, thereby enabling you to share your gift with us. You were a shining example of living your talk of justice. Your voice WAS a bell of freedom.
To Mary's family (and friends, most especially Peter and Noel Paul), our deepest condolences. We could only hope to make a fraction of the difference she made while in this life. She was a powerful presence and it's absence is equally so.
September 18, 2009
We have lost one of the greats. Not only a great singer, but also a great woman of strong conviction who was not afraid to stand up for her beliefs, at any risk. Mary can be proud of who she was and what she gave to us. The music and the legacy live on. May God hold Mary's loved ones close and grant them His perfect peace and comfort.
September 18, 2009
Mary, I can remember times when I was too young to go to concerts on a date so I begged my parents to take me to see you when you were in my town. I enjoyed it thoroughly but I don't think my folks did because we had to sit on the floor. Even though you have passed away, you songs never will. J, Salt Lake City

September 18, 2009
My condolences to all. A beautiful voice in our land has been stilled, a beautiful heart is quiet. Like many others of my generation, I sang your part with you. I will always be grateful you were part of my life.
September 18, 2009
I am sad and heartsick. My prayers and thoughts are with Mary and her family and countless supporters. The music of PPM was one small voice of truth during a time of national injustice. I still have PPM lps I got when my sister left for college. The music comes through today like it did 40 years ago, provides comfort and reason in times of distress. I sang PPM songs I still know by heart to my granddaughter and hope to continue to keep the music alive. May God bless.
September 18, 2009

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

September 18, 2009
The first time we saw PP&M perform was in 1962 in Chicago and the most recent time was at Ravinia, sometime within the past 10 years. They were always our favorite group and we absolutely loved the "folk music" groups of the 60's.
I always appreciated Mary's beautiful harmony and this may sound silly but I loved the "presence" she had on stage, the way she moved and the way she moved her head and her beautiful hair.
Our thoughts are with her family in her loss and also to the two remaining members of the greatest folk group ever.
We'll miss you Mary. Our prayers are with your family as they grieve for you.

We saw your concert at San Diego State and when we were doing a film on lobstering we rented a sprawling cape in Brookline and popped into Stookey's for a look at "a man outstanding in his field". My nephew, Jason was there and later went to Rockport Film School. Bill and John came up from Boston and we had such a great time. Your music inspired me to write poetry winning a national award at fifteen. My daughter Polaris just won the Grady Award /Poetry in Maine so you can see how your influence still blossoms down generations. Flowers fall only to be pressed.

Rest in peace sweet music lady. Your beautiful voice and music will live on forever and we are greatful. When I was a teenager I wanted to be you! I so admired your talent and your beautiful blonde hair...... "Don't know when I'll be back again, oh babe, I hate to go"
September 18, 2009
My sympathies to Mary's husband, daughters and to Peter and Paul. My sister and "her" singing group way back when is what sparked my interest with PP&M. That was many years ago and PP&M are still my favorite!!! I often go to their music when i need a lift.

September 18, 2009
Mary,
You are a legacy of music as it once was. You will always be remembered..Keep on singing....
September 18, 2009
How many times...Puff The Magic Dragon....did tears fall. Man that was like a love song of all times. When that song came on, especially to those of us 55 & plus...(.smiles to all of us)it just set a certain mood. I love what the group stood for...the words here in her story describe her in caring words like: "in her defense of the defenseless." How awesome that back "in the day" we had someone who did defend the defenseless & it didn't matter about race or ethnic background & what an honor to have marched with Martin Luther King. Mary was an awesome lady & hopefully we'll hear lots of her music....still !!!!! God Bless her family & friends !
September 18, 2009
To Mary's daughters my heartfelt condolences, she was wonderful and her songs bring back such great memories! My childhood nurse, Betsy, spent summers taking care of you when I was away when you were little, do you remember her? She thought the world of your mom! love and memories, Frances

What fond memories, of growing up. May you find comfort in knowing that there are others who really do care about your great lost.
God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.
September 18, 2009
R.I.P. Mary Travers you are a great Inspiration to us all. We will never forget your Music and Wonderful Singing with Peter Paul and Mary.
Maybe this country can look and follow your Loving Ways. You Are One of A Kind.

"Without his life-long friend, poor Puff could not be brave, So Puff, the mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave."

But also : "I've got a hammer, and I've got a bell, and I've got a a song to sing all over this land: It's the hammer of Justice, it's the bell of Freedom, it's a song about Love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land."

And "If you'll take my hand, my son, all will be well when day is done..."

Grant us all to live and die so well.

To quote Holly Near "I'll keep singing the songs you were singing as if I were two..."
September 18, 2009
One of my fondest memories is of taking my youngest son to a Peter, Paul and Mary concert in Phoenix several years ago, when he was in elementary school. He's twenty-something now and we both remember the concert vividly, especially the atmosphere of joy and love that radiated between the performers and the audience. I appreciate all the wonderful songs, the political awareness and activism, and Mary's voice ringing with truth and passion. "Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears!"
September 18, 2009
One of my favorite songs was the one she sang to her grandaughter in a special concert program. Beautiful, lady with strong convictions I admired her very much.

Peter, Paul and Mary were my introduction to the world of folk music and harmony as a young girl in the 60's. Thank you. One of my favorite albums was "Mary. . ." and the song I would sing to my baby boy, Eric, was "Erika". Thank you for the beautiful music and now sing with the angels. Sing out about justice and freedom and love. We need to hear it.
September 18, 2009
When I saw Peter, Paul and Mary in concert I felt like I was in the presence of royalty. It was an incredible thrill to be in their presence. Their lives and music touched so many--they lived up to their potential, enriched us all, pricked our conscience and made the world a better place for inspiring us to try harder to do better for others too.
Thanks Mary for the beautiful music and your life so dedicated to what really was and is important.
September 18, 2009

September 18, 2009
I loved the group as a kid...my favorites were "If I Had A Hammer and "Blowin In The Wind," as I always pretended to sing like Mary, in an attempted to belt their tunes while singing in a huge floor fan. I will forever have memories of Peter, Paul and Mary's contribution to the great tunes of the 60s and their support of the civil rights movement.

Mary was a beauty, who radiated the group. We appreciate ALL the beautiful songs and her spirited heart. May she rest in peace, as her memory will forever be cherished...THANKS, MARY.

September 18, 2009
I feel so blessed that we were able to see Peter, Paul, and Mary perform in May of 2007. Mary's voice was still so strong. It was very moving, and the audience was so energized. I felt we truly could have "changed the world" that night.

Thank you for all your music, which moved us through the 60's, 70's, and beyond. I'm especially grateful for all you gave my daughter through your songs, as she grew up, and even now... She has severe autism, and has LOVED your music. She was at that concert in Portland, ME in May,2007. Thank you, Mary, for touching us all so deeply, and for inspiring us to have such compassion in the world.
September 18, 2009
Dear family, I know the loss you feel right now is hard, but with time it will get easier. Find comfort in listening to her songs, and knowing that she is always near, in spirit.

I grew up on the songs of Peter, Paul and Mary. I was lucky enough to have seen them in concert in Virginia Beach, Virginia in the late 90's, and share them with my daughters and husband.

Sing on sweet woman, sing on.

Dear Friends and Family of Mary Travers, I grew up on PP&M. Their words of inspiration became emblazened on my young and innocent mind and heart. Much of the good that I am and who I am today is directly attributable to you, Mary and your partners. You have changed the world in you too short a lifetime. You never met me, but you have helped me to love and care about you and all of humanity. Thank you for a well lived life, God bless you and thnak you for making my life better. I'll see you in heaven and say hello to my mom. Sandra

I fell in love with Mary in 1965 and still am.
September 18, 2009
To Mary's family...I live in Mobile but went over to Pensacola to hear PPand M. It was and still remains the best concert I've ever attended. They barely stopped for a break and encouraged us to sing along...they knew there'd be no stopping anyway. The walls shook and swayed with the sounds of "Puff the Magic Dragon" and other popular ones of theirs. Frankly, I was a big fan of "Old Stew Ball (Was a Race Horse)." Your mom/wife really enjoyed entertaining. I play their music still ....thank God we had her. I remember her talking about her grandchildren, when they were babies, and what political party she tried to get them to identify with. My grandchildren came along and she gave me the idea you couldn't start too soon. (Smile.) She's an angel now.

Dear Mary, Rest in peace, the peace you sang for all of your life! Will always remember the PP &M concerts at what used to be the Carter Baron Ampitheatre in Washington, DC during the 60's. Your spirit lives on our hearts. Jesus Met the Woman at the Well will always be one of my favorite songs.

I've read in the story of Mary's passing, how she read each one of 10,000 emails while she was recovering from a bone marrow transplant.
When I first heard, almost five years ago, that Mary was suffering form leukemia, I took the time to send her an email. This is what I sent her:

Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 4:50 AM
Subject: A missive from the heart!

Dear Ms Travers,
We have heard you sing since 1962. You, and Peter and Paul, through your
voices have always touched our hearts, and raised our hopes and spirits. Our kids grew up
listening to your music. To them, as well as us, the sound of Peter, Paul & Mary became a part of our
home. That sound was enmeshed forever in our souls. We wish you with all our hearts a complete recovery.

"A woman’s voice can't shout to make us hear,
Two women’s voices can't shout to make us hear,
But if two and two and fifty make a million,
We'll see that day come 'round,
We'll see that day come 'round."

Our Warmest regards,
Semyon & Patricia Solomon"

I'm glad I took the time to send that message while she was still alive. For that I have no regrets, but I sobbed when I read of her passing, and I find my eyes filling with tears as I try to compose this missive. Yes, my family
and I will deeply miss her, but her music will beat in our hearts forever.

Forever in Peace
Semyon Solomon

I am deeply saddened by Mary Travers leaving us. Yet, I know she has found her "perfect wings." I purchased one of the first albums in 1964 when I got my very first record player--"Blowin in the Wind, and "If had a Hammer"--they embody words of truth and were logos not only for that time, but for all time. I was blessed to attend the concert Peter, Paul, and Mary gave at the Palace Theater in Waterbury and even more blessed to be sitting near some of her Mary's family and friends. Mary, Peter, Paul--your talents were unblemished by age. In that concert hall that night we were all friends, we were all close. We shared in the dreams, the goals, the struggles through the powerful spirit carried by words and notes. Mary--your gift of song shall live in all of us. Our Sunday school children have listened to the story of "Don't Laugh at Me" and at Christmas they have hard "The Cherry Tree." You have touched our lives as no other. It is in part because of you, that I have had the courage to sing in front of our congregation. You always sang from your heart and you gave us a piece of you to carry forever each time you sang. May your family carry these precious memories--each life you have touched is a life you have changed. Thank you for that.

In 1968, among all the turmoil, PPandM, had a date to play at the gym at Trinity. They had been at a march somewhere in the south, but flew to San Antonio. They were about an hour late, but played for us.

At the end of the concert, I was brave enough to walk up to the stage, just to say how moved I was. Mary leaned over and kissed me. She was truly a person full of love in her heart and it showed in her music. I am so sad today, except for the celebration of her life.
September 18, 2009
One of my favorite memories was seeing Peter Paul and Mary in 1962 at a concert here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My girlfriend and I went backstage and got Mary's autograph. She was so tall and her hair was like silk. What a beautiful smile she gave us as she handed our autograph books back. At 13 that was the ultimate joy! Thank you again Mary!

September 18, 2009

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I first saw Mary with PP&M back in the early '60's in the Village, and have been a fan ever since. I and my family have lost a dear friend who will be remembered for the joy and inspiration she always gave us.

Rest in peace,
September 17, 2009
I was always a fan of Mary's music. I listened because my siblings who were much older than me listened to Peter, Paul and Mary all the time. Their music helped me become a critical thinker and not to accept things "just because." Then something even greater happened. Mary, with her sense of humor and her spirit, inspired me while treating at MSKCC. I will never forget "Chemo Sabe." Thank you and God bless.
September 17, 2009
The world has lost a beautiful voice and a beautiful soul. I hope it brings comfort to Mary's family that she will live on not only in her music, but in all of us whose lives she touched. Rest in Peace Mary.

From the time I was 10 I have been singing your songs...through the 60's, 70's, 80's and still today. We sang your part six weeks ago in the audience with Peter and Noel Paul on Leavin' On a Jet Plane ... as you were unable to be at the concert. you were missed then and are missed now, but will never be forgotten.

I've loved Mary and the Peter, Paul & Mary group for over 47 years. Loved her voice, her passion for the music and the meaning of the words. My condolences to her family and friends. We will always have her music - I am listening to "Hurry, Sundown" right now.

What a monumental loss to the music world...a trio broken, a voiced hushed. Peter, Paul, and Mary were among the first to sing passionately about the world's wrongs and what might be done about them...and they did it better than any others. Rest in peace, Mary...and keep singing in heaven so the world can hear you. My sympathy to your family and especially to Peter and Paul.

I am so sad by the news of Mary's passing. Peter, Paul, and Mary as a trio were certainly a force in effecting peace, love, and understanding.

I will always treasure my opportunity to meet the trio in 1997, and the extra bonus of interviewing Mary for a magazine article. Her sense of humor and frank honesty were prevalent throughout the interview.

Her voice now is silenced, but her music will always remind us that a voice, a single voice, certainly can make a difference.

What a gift she gave to us all.
May she rest in peace.

I must have sung "Puff" to my now 29 yr old daughter at least a thousand times when she was small; she could never get enough of that song! And now we both sing it to her children/my grandchildren. Thank you Mary for your voice, your music, your message. All of your songs with Peter, Paul and Mary will forever be part of our history and our most cherished memories. Our world has lost a remarkable person. May God bless and comfort your family.
September 17, 2009
My aunt Ruti introduced us to Peter, Paul and Mary's music when we were kids. I never got to see them live in concert, but watched them on TV. I can't count the many times people would stop and tell me that I looked alot like Mary (what a great compliment). My sisters and I are also singers, (Trys Sesutes Grikaviciutes), and we also loved to sing some of PP&M's songs. It truly is sad that the era of good folk singing is gone, the messages of love and caring. My deepest sympathy to Mary's family, friends and fans. God blessed our world with this trio. Mary was a gift to us all. Can't wait to meet you someday!

I am saddened by the loss of Mary Travers. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mary's family and friends, especially Peter and Paul. I have enjoyed the music of Peter, Paul, and Mary for many years. Dear family of Mary Travers -- Heaven just must be a little more joyous and beautiful with Mary Travers now in attendance. Peter, Paul, & Mary have brought so much joy to myself and so many people in the world... "Now the time has come to leave you...". I am saddened to hear of Mary's passing. Sincere condolences to family and friends. PP&M was the first album I bought and PP&M music and many concerts were an influential part of my life and created such fond memories which endure. Mary was aways gracious, strong, a woman not to be dismissed, a beautiful, distinctive voice and a song not to be forgotten. The messages were just, the messenger divine, the delivery a gift. So blessed were we to have the opportunity to share for so long. "And morning bells will shine..."

Puff,The Magic Dragon,Blowing In the Wind, all the songs Peter,Paul and Mary came out with are legends. Soothing and thoughtful. Mary put the right sound out there. I guess now she knows the answer. She'll be missed here on this plane of life, but welcomed on the next. Bye Mary. Thank you.
September 17, 2009
My 1st concert in the late 60's @ the Albany Armory- sitting in the front row for PP&M brought smiles, tears and hope for real change. Dozens of PP&M concerts later,I still share the same social conscience-that same hope. Whether 'Erica with the Windy Yellow Hair' or 'Puff' or 'Blowin' in the Wind', Mary shared her voice to enrich the world with music and song....much like the Great Mandela.

Dearest Mary,

I made an entry to your guestbook earlier today and now find that I feel somewhat embarrassed by my omissions.

First, I want to say thank you, thank you and thank you again for the many years of the gift of your beautiful voice and generous, kind spirit.

Then, I want to say to Peter and Paul; I cannot begin to imagine the tremendous void you must feel at this time. Regardless of any differences you may have had along the way, I hope that you both truly realize, on this day, the immense and immeasurable contribution P, P&M made to the music of our generation.

I have spent this entire day in mourning over Mary’s passing. I have listened to your greatest hits over and over for most of the day. One day vs. almost 50 years of your gift to me- how can I ever repay you?

Again, to Peter & Paul, may I leave you with a favorite quote from Flavia;

“With each memory we meet again with those we love… for the heart never forgets.”

Our hearts will NEVER forget- love to you all and may you always find comfort in the memories and beautiful music you made together.

With kindest regards and in deep sympathy.

I last saw PP&M perform in 2006, as part of the dedication of the George and Eleanor McGovern Library at Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, SD. Mary, who was at that time ill, made a special effort to be there to honor George McGovern. PP&M had been active in his early political career and his presidential bid. The trio gave an outstanding performance. Mary's voice was strong, clear and beautiful as ever. I knew then that this was a very special moment in time and I was so fortunate to be there. That was the last time I saw her in concert. Her spirit lives on through her music. We can all learn lessons from a life dedicated to true humanitarian values. My most sincere sympathy to her family and friends.

I have such found memories of hearing Peter, Paul and Mary while I was a doctoral student at the University of Maryland. I was 30 then; now I am 76. In between I have great memories of their music. Thank you, Mary, for being a part of my life. Values that I hold dearly today were formulated, in part, because of your music. God bless you; may you rest in peace.

I never thought I'd send condolences to somebody I didn't know. However, to Mary's family---I felt I did know her because of her music. I was a child of the 60s--graduated HS in 1966, in San Francisco. I attended several performances of Peter, Paul, and Mary, in the later years, starting in Seattle for the 25th anniversary. The last PP&M performance was at Wolf Trap, Virginia, probably in 2005 or 2006. What an outstanding performer, great human being. God bless the family.

In my crusty 64 years of life I have shed a tear only once for what one may call a celebrity. Today was that day.
This old ball we call home will never be quiet the same without Mary to make it merry.
September 17, 2009
In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.
September 17, 2009
The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear. We share your grief.
September 17, 2009
In addition to the wonderful music, Peter, Paul & Mary made an enormous contribution to Civil Rights and to the cause of freedom in general, for all people the world over. Mary will be very sadly missed.
September 17, 2009
I will never forget in my darkest moments how Mary lifted me up in spirit, inspiring me to have courage , to move forward as a independent young girl, she still is my light.......as she sings in her song.........."I'm leaving on a an airplane", don't know when I'll be back again......"oh babe I hate to go"...............and we will miss you mary....... never will we see socially aware singers like this again, hope your flight is great...........

Mary gave so much pleasure to so many
September 17, 2009
A formee dj from the 1960s in Ogdensburg, I played peter, paul and Mary music every chance I got. I saw them perform at the Watertown Ice Area a number of years ago. God speed, Mary and may the perpetual light shine upon you.
September 17, 2009
Mary "sings" to me every morning on my way to work, just as she has since I was a schoolgirl in the late 60's. Mary will always "sing" to me - - in a way no other ever has. I loved her in the early days and I love her now. I wish her peace - - just as she wished for the World.
September 17, 2009
I am 51 years old and grew up listening to Peter, Paul and Mary. I always sang along with most all of their songs. Her voice was so beautiful. When my 22 year old son was a baby, I always played their music and rocked him at night to get him to sleep. As he grew up, I think that he even enjoyed their music, and the soothing songs that she sang.

I had the amazing opportunity to meet and sing with her while living in New York City. She was so gracious and absolutely one of my heros. The world has suffered a profound loss in her passing.
My heart and prayers go out to her family.

Peter,Paul and Mary's lyrics addessed many social issues of my generation. Their music is very much part of my soul.I grieve for the loss of one of Americas finest artist in the person of Mary Travers. May you rest in peace.
September 17, 2009
I don't believe I would have survived living in the violent home I grew up in without the constant comfort provided by all the peace, love & brotherhood toned songs of Peter, Paul & Mary. Rest well, Mary and Thank You.
September 17, 2009
I remember their music growing up as a young child as I am in my late 40's now. I am so saddened of the loss of Mary.I'm leaving on a jet plane really stands out for me as such a great memory.Puff the magic dragon was one of my favorites too.
God Bless and may your music live forever in out hearts.
September 17, 2009
I have sung along to PP&M since I was a young girl. Never was much of the Rock and Roll type, but more PP&M, Arlo Guthrie, Cat Stevens, etc. As a young mother, I always sang songs to my children. The kids are grown now, but they still know all the words to Puff the Magic Dragon, and I'm sure will sing it to my grandchildren. Even today when I hear leavin' on a jet plane, I get a lump in my throat. Good music memories. Rest in peace Mary Travers... you had a lifetime of making people happy with your music.
September 17, 2009

WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU THE REST OF OUR LIVES= REST IN PEACE DEAR MARY
September 17, 2009
"Dragons live forever but not little girls" to paraphrase her very famous song. She will be remembered for her works for as long as her music is heard. Her music was loved by young and old.
September 17, 2009
I FEEL NOW THAT ALL THE BEST ARE GONE FROM OUR GENERATION . THE WONDERFUL MUSIC THAT WE COULD SING WITH. MARY WAS A LOVING AND GIVING LADY. SHE LIVED NEAR BY AND CAME INTO THE SHOP AND ALWAYS STOPPED TO PLAY WITH THE CHILDREN THAT WOULD COME IN AND MY GRAND SON WOULD SIT ON HER LAP AND LISTEN TO HER SOFT VOICE SING PUFF, AS HE CALLED IT.HEAVEN HAS A NEW ANGLE.
September 17, 2009
I once heard Mary perform a song based on "Conscientious Objector" written in 1931 by Edna St. Vincent Millay which stated "I shall die, but that is all I shall do for death." I quoted from her performance before a veterans group. As a totally disabled Vietnam War Veteran I will never forget her for this song and it's meaning.
September 17, 2009
Good-bye,good-bye through all the pain.
I remember sitting in a therapist's office discussing how beautiful he thought you were,"That blonde hair swinging back and fourth". I smiled listening quietly to him.

You taught me what a memory means and now we never really return.

I wish you peace and love for eternity.

September 17, 2009
What a wonderful singer. So sad to see her pass. PPM will live on forever.
September 17, 2009
Being just a few years younger than PP&M I had the privelege to listen to nearly 50 years of wonderful music. My wife and I attended countless PP&M concerts and all of our children grew up not only knowing who these wonderful people were, but also the impact they had on American society. We will miss her terribly and play her music often. Adieu Mary
September 17, 2009
Peace and Love for us '60s generation. Thank you for the wonderful music memories Mary. Our sincerest sympathy to your husband and dear family. You have fought the long battle, it is now time to Rest in Peace Mary.
September 17, 2009
An outstanding performer and gracious person who leaves behind a legacy of work that is second to none. Blowing In The Wind, Too Much Of Nothing, I Dig Rock And Roll Music, and Leaving On A Jet Plane are my favorites. A superb talent that will not be equaled.
September 17, 2009
I lead a choir of people with intellectual disabilities. We have been rehearsing the great song "Don't laugh at me." I think it's P,P&M's greatest tune in terms of social justice. I bless Mary and her dear colleagues for giving us such an important song. For all those who do not know it, please listen in. It's deeply touching.
September 17, 2009
I first saw Peter, Paul and Mary perform at the Newport Folk Festival 1965 and last in 2007. I have been a fan for all of my adult lire. Today, the music has again died for me, but her voice will forever be in my heart. The angels choir has just received a beautiful strong new voice to lead them. Rest in peace Mary - you always deserved for the sun to shine.
September 17, 2009
Her music and her ideas of peace will live on for generations to come
September 17, 2009

ever since I was a little girl I was promised to meet this wonderful relative who's music I loved.Once nea(Ruth Nolan)and auntie Gertrude Travers died I had no way to contact her.I checked the internet and even called ch.2.Now I afford the internet again, there are many sites. It breaks my heart to find out she was so close to me and that she was ill;and that I could have comforted her as I am dying of bone cancer and really empathize. I found her one day too late.If it breaks my heart so, I can only imagine her family and friends missing this wonderful soul.I want to go to services and pay respecte, but have no info. If can't I'd like to leave an angel by her and pay respects privately where she rests later.I don't know how long I'll afford the internet(fitzcrack45@verizon.net) or 508-853-1028 if you can help w/info .In sympathy God bless

September 17, 2009
I am saddened that we have to say goodbye to a folk singer that has always been on my playlist. "I'll walk in the rain by your side...." the song I sing to my grandbaby, thinking of Mary's version of it. Thank you for your songs and your spirit and your strength. Godspeed.

September 17, 2009
The world has lost a great voice for peace and there will be a void in the world of music as Mary Travers' voice lives on only in recordings. She lifted my generation and will be missed. She was my "answer" in the wind.
September 17, 2009
My five siblings and I grew up in Milwaukee listening to the "Peter,Paul and Mommy" LP. We would all sing along and mimic the sounds of the "Marvelous Toy"! Twenty years later, my three children did the same thing while listening to PP&M on cassette. I wonder how my future grandchildren will hear it! Thank you for over 40 years of memories. Rest well.
September 17, 2009
She had the most beautiful voice of any woman that I have ever heard! My sympathy goes out to her family. We all feel the loss.
September 17, 2009
Mary, you're singing with the angels now but are greatly missed here on earth. You are loved by many. Your music, talent & love for all will not be forgotten. I pray for strength & comfort for all of Mary's family at this sad and difficult time.
September 17, 2009
I was honored to meet Mary back in 1962-63 when the trio
performed in Utica N.Y. It was a snowy afternoon and the
attendance was only about 30-40 people. They not only
performed but were so professional and kind. You would
have thought they were performing to a full house. Mary
in a black, short sleeved, knee length dress and her pretty
long blond hair especially effected me. She was so friendly
and personal with everyone in the audience. Thank you for
sharing her with us. you have my sympathy. May she now rest in peace.
September 17, 2009
You have know idea how much peter, paul, and mary have influenced my life. they have been my favorite singers since i was three, and at 15, they still are. their music was magical; it was truly music. It hurts my heart that Mary has passed away. it's been like my life's ambition to see a pp&m concert, but i guess i never will. the other day in english class, we had to bring in the lyrics of uor favorite song. i took in "weave me the sunshine", and it seems so ironic that just days before her death, i chose that song. for all of you that knew her personally, i can't say that anyone knows what you're going through, but all of pp&m's fans are grieving just the same. If only i could heal your sorrow, fill my cup again.
with love,
stefani

I am so sad about this. I love Peter, Paul and Mary. She was a great singer and entertainer and will be deeply missed by those of us who grew up with Puff the Magic Dragon.
September 17, 2009
My sincere sympathy to the family of the late Mary Travers. I grew up with the music of Peter, Paul and Mary and as a child my favorite song was "Puff the magic dragon" and later in life I saw them in concert and in the 90's in Toronto with just Peter and Paul, Mary was not able to make the concert we the people filled in, I truly would like you to know Mary touched the lives of so many and reached deep into our soul to move us. May God bless her and keep her safe, and just think, God's own choir has another lead singer to brighten up the days... Bless you Mary. Rest well..
September 17, 2009
I'm just about 40, so being a 70's/80's kid - I loved "Puff the Magic Dragon".

Mary your harmonies on "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "If I had a Hammer", among many others were awesome.

You can tell when someone is "Real" and "Authentic" via sound and screen. You no doubt were both. Thank You!

RIP
September 17, 2009
I saw PP&M perform many times in Toronto. It was always a special time for me when they played. After one concert at Ontario Place, they were signing autographs and Peter asked me if I would hold his wine glass while he signed for a number of people. He then invited us to have dinner with PP&M and guests. I was able to chat with all three over dinner. It was a very special evening that I'll never forget. Good-bye Mary, you are loved by millions! You will be missed.
September 17, 2009
Wow! What a voice she had. When I hear their songs, her voice rings true and clear in my head which made my day! She'll be dearly missed!
September 17, 2009
Dear Family,

I am sorry that Mary passed away. I remember as a child how much I enjoyed her singing. I too have lost loved ones in death. What has given me comfort are the words in the Bible that tell us that soon "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." (John 5:28,29)

I hope this has given you comfort in your time of sorrow.

Sincerely,

September 17, 2009
Mary will be missed for her smile and talent. As I went about my morning tasks today, I listened to her music carried in my pocket. I pray that she rests in peace and that God is watching after her.
September 17, 2009
Dear Travers family may your hearts be lightened with the thoughts that you will be with Mary again. She is in no pain now. She is waiting for you on the other side of the vail. She will watch over you and you will feel her love every day. I know I feel the love of my sweetheart after loosing him 4 years ago. My deepest sympathy to you all for the loss of your loved one. May God be with you through these hard days. My prayers are with you.

Gosh, My heart skipped a beat when I heard of this news. PP and M have been part of out lives forever, part of every day living. When inspiration is needed all one needs to do is to play the songs. Coming by performances on TV is when we stop and take a break from life to enjoy and absorb the true heartfelt performances. Mary's voice was one of not too many when you know who it is immediately. I will miss her as I'm sure we all will. The music lives on and I'm sure she will be one of those individuals remembered for a very, very long time.
September 17, 2009
Peter, Paul, and Mary were a part of my heritage growing up in the 60's. I am thankful for the everlasting music that Mary left for generations to come. I pray for peace for her family and friends in her glorious homegoing.
September 17, 2009
I am deeply saddened to hear that Mary Travers died yesterday. She has been such a huge presence on my turntable, cassette tape player, CD player or radio. I feel like I knew her personally.

If I may paraphrase some of the words from one of the trademark songs that she sang so many times with Peter and Paul:

His head is bent in sorrow, green scales fall like rain,
So, again, Puff the mighty dragon sadly slips into his cave.

I have loved and listened to her music for almost 50 years, and will miss greatly her warm, wonderful smile.

May I express my heartfelt sympathy to her family and close associates. She was one of a kind and a true national treasure.

Her beautiful voice will forever be a part of my music world and she will always be singing in my house.

I can hear the whistle blow, dearest Mary- rest in peace.
September 17, 2009
Some of my best lifetime memories are of Peter, Paul, and Mary's concerts and playing their records while singing along! I loved the way Mary accented their message with the flip of her hair, and I especially enjoyed Mary's solos. I hope that Mary's familly will find joy in knowing that Mary is now singing with the angels who have lifted her up into God's loving arms.

I am saddened by Mary's passing. When my youngest son was in kindergarten, he would come home singing "Puff the Magic Dragon", which his teacher had taught his class to sing. When he was an adult I bought him a ceramic castle music box with a knight in the parapet, ready to slay the oncoming dragon. The box played "Puff the Magic Dragon". In the 90's I was fortunate to attend a PPM concert, and it was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had! I shall always cherish this memory. What a gift Mary was to that trio, and to all of us. I can still hear her voice.

I am very sad at this passing. I'm sorry to see you go, Mary. My wife and I had plane tickets, hotel reservations, and theater tickets to see PP&M near Chicago in April '08. I didn't want to miss a chance to see them/her. I'm sorry she hurt. I'm sorry that she is gone. Her caring means so much. XXXOOO
September 17, 2009
A very sad day. Singing along with the records, the tapes, the CDs, it's been my life and that of my children. Moments I'll never forget -- In the 90s I got to sing along with the audience to Puff at the Meyerson, which was pure magic. In 2003 at the Meyerson again, right at the beginning of the Iraq war, we all sang (and wept) along to Where Have All The Flowers Gone. (Yes, I was the one who started sobbing first.) Mary might be gone, but her sweet voice will always be with us.
September 17, 2009
What a wonderful voice, I am saddened to see you go, but know that where ever you are, you will be thrilling those around you with your voice. May God Bless your Family & Friends. And may God Bless you Mary Travers
September 17, 2009
Today, the sun is a bit dimmer. The sadness of your family and your 'world family' is heavy. The joy and beauty of your voice and songs, both in the group with Peter and Paul and as a solo, have been carried in my soul and heart since the '60s. Thank you and bless you for all those gifts. My thoughts, songs of you, prayers and sympathy to your family.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
September 17, 2009
I feel a deep sense of personal loss. I will treasure even more my compelete Peter, Paul and Mary collection. May God bless your soul and my heart felt condolences to all your family and personal friends.
September 17, 2009
My condolences to Mary's family. My high school and college years in the 60's are filled with memories interlaced with PP&M music. Seeing her (and them) in concert, which I was able to do several times beginning in 1963, was always special. Thank you, Mary, and may you rest in peace.
September 17, 2009
To Mary's biological & musical families,

In college at KU, we would road trip around Kansas to get to PPM concerts, but the last time I saw them live was the Reunion Concert in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.
Blessings and comfort to all,

This was the first music I ever loved -- The harmonies and the hopes for all of humankind. What I learned from PP&M has run resident on my soul ever since that time. Condolences and love and thanks.

I had grown up with the music of Peter, Paul and Mary and will forever echo in my memory. I was honored to see the trio in Houston, Texas in the early 1980's and I will never forget the beautiful harmony. My condolences go out to the Travers family and to Peter and Paul.

Please accept my deepest sympathy.
I attended one of their concerts back in the 60's and have held fond memories of it throughout the years.

A wonderful singer that always made me smile. I grew up with the music and have a songbook with all their songs and can sing most every word by heart. A treasured memory to have had Mary in our everyday lives. Condolences to the family. May she sing with the angels in heaven now.

What a great loss to all of us Baby-Boomers, and the World. Puff-The-Magic-Dragon was the 'one' song that a lot of us, that lived and died in Viet Nam, used as reference to the Helicopter Gun-Ships that fired many, many rounds into the Jungles to protect some from dying. May GOD bless her/Family/Friends.And may each of you find comfort and peace.

Loved Peter Paul And Mary. My heart felt sympathy for your loss. It is our loss also.

Like so many others I grew up to the music of Peter, Paul & Mary. Their music inspired not only the imagination, but social consciousness.

My sincere sympathies to her family, and to Peter & Noel Paul - who have indeed lost a part of themselves too. We join them in mourning her loss, but she will live on in her music to touch many generations to come.

I will always remember Mary - not just for her voice and her politcal activism, but for her down to earth sense of humor, which I loved. We will all miss her terribly, and I am blessed to have sung with her for so many years. --- Cantor Kathy Barr

Because of Mary, I found my voice and allowed the harmonies to flow freely. I will always hold a place in my heart for her, and with every note wish peace and God speed.

My heart is deeply saddened. When my son (now a second year conservatory student studying opera) was two years old, his sister was in an infant seat. He would take her play gym, turn it on its side for double microphones and sing with Peter, Paul and Mary. My husband, he and I were Peter, Paul and Mary. His sister? She was Dick Kniss. (My son started playing upright bass in fourth grade.) About three years ago, we saw Peter, Paul and Mary at the Lowell Opera House. (How blessed we were for that opportunity.) We treasure our second copy of the Holiday Concert. We treasure a copy of the video teaching children about bullying. You will forever be in our hearts, Mary.

To the family of Mary Travers: I'm so sorry to hear about one of the dearest singers of all time. One song I like by Peter, Paul & Mary is "500 Miles". Her voice started the song saying "If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone, you can hear the whistle blow, a hundred miles." She will be greatly missed.(Rev 21:4) In God's Kingdom, we look forward to seeing Mary Travers again.

Sincerely

Seeing all the songs listed brought back a lot of memories from my junior high days so long ago. God bless her family! Lynn and Danny Watson

I first heard P.P.+M. back in 1964 when my older brother got the Blowin'in the Wind album.I was seven years old at the time and I've been in love with the political correctness of their songs'content and the plaintive spiritual righteousness in Mary's vocals thattranscended and gave a clarity and a transparence to the urgency of taking action and standing up for what is truly right whenit is trying to be repressed by powerful self-interests groups so they can fulfill their agenda.I had theprivelege and the pleasure to see P.P.+M in concert at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans in the early 1980's when they were bringing attention to the atrocities going on at that time in El Salvador.I briefly talked to Mary outside in the parking lot after the concert to thank her for making difference in so many people's lives and effecting changes that needed to be made.I became the only liberal in atotally conservative family living in a totally conservative upper-middle class white collar professional neighborhood and I realized, despite the peer pressure to go along in order to get along,it's o.k. to be different if what you believe in is right.Thank you for the inspiration and awarteness,Mary.May God bless you and keep you always as one of His guardian angels to watch over and protect the less fortunate people of humanity.I hope our souls cross again sometime;next time around, the treat's on me...

LOVE ETERNALLY,
LAIRD DENEGRE"DENNY" MARTIN
