Kerri from Perth Western Australia here... My respect for a marine and man who seemed to bless so many and made so many marines welcome. He seemed to be loved and honoured by so many marines and all those he came in contact with (from what I've read and watched). It's been an honour to learn about such an AMAZING person. His parents must be some AMAZING PEOPLE AND SHOULD BE SO PROUD TO HAVE RAISED SUCH A SON. God bless MATTS PARENTS and family members and his wife and son who are left behind to pick up the pieces. My prayers and thoughts go out to you all. I pray that the pain of losing some one so special has subsided somewhat. THANKYOU for the soldiers who fight so valiantly and for those who have died in combat.

Matt Abbate,

Words can't describe what I felt hearing about you passing away. I recently saw the other Matt and he told me. You were always very strong and I know you will be the strength for you family in their time of need...

For more then a year we would hang out and talk stories, about how you would amount to things greater then what you were doing. You did everything you set out to accomplish. Your Aloha spirit and always welcoming other to be friends regardless of their background made you a perfect friend...

Aloha Matt

God bless the family of Sgt. Matthew Abbate and all of the Marines who served with him. I read about him in the Wall Street Journal article dated April 2, 2011. I didn't have the honor of knowing Matthew, but I share your grief nonetheless. It's been six and a half years since LCpl. Wes Canning was killed in the second battle of Fallujah, and the raw hurt of Wes' death resurfaces everytime I read of the loss of another Marine. Please remember that Matthew's sacrifice will always be honored by those who love freedom and courage. Again, God bless you and keep you.
April 07, 2011
I had the priveledge to serve with Sgt Abbate in Fallujah a few years ago. I will always remember him as a kind, yet strong individual. Ever since the moment I met him, he continues to be an inspiration. I was enraged when I learned about his death, and I wish I was right there with him. The world is alot emptier with him gone, but Heaven has got to be much improved with his presence.

You had a great impact on my life aswell as many others, you were the face of 3/5 I will always remember you friend. Until we meet again. Semper Fi.

Matt you were a good friend of mine and meant more to me than you will ever know. I still can't believe you're gone bro but I know you're looking down on us and you're proud that we are carrying on. It was an honor to serve with you for the past 3 years and thanks for welcoming me when I was the new boot on the block, I'll always remember every concert we've been to, every beer we've drank together, and every field op we got stuck in because you made it a point that life is to short to not have fun. Love you man, hope your new command upstairs is giving you a warm welcome, R.I.P. brother.

Dear Abbate family,

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Matthew will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you.

FOLLOW THE RAINBOW TO HEAVEN.
=========================================

A SOLDIER HAD DIE OUT ON THE
BATTLEFIELD;

BROKEN HEARTS ARE WEEPING FOR
THEM,

BUT TAKE COMFORT OF KNOWING
THAT GOD HAD SENT THEM A
RAINBOW FROM HEAVEN;

THE SOULS OF THE SOLDIERS
HAVE GONE TO THERE HOME
IN HEAVEN,

OUR LOVED ONE'S HAS FOLLOW
GOD'S LOVELY RAINBOW IN THE
SKY;

ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE
SKY.

THAT LEADS ALL THE WAY TO THE
OTHER END OF THE LORD'S
HOUSE IN HEAVEN,

SO JUST KEEP ON PRAYING AND
TRUST THAT GOD WILL SEND US
THAT SAME RAINBOW IN THE SKY;

WHERE OUR LOVED ONE'S ARE
WAITING FOR YOU AND FOR ME AT
THE END OF THE RAINBOW IN
HEAVEN.

Our prayers & thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Your son is the ultimate warrior and unselfish with his life. It's because of young men & women, like him that we are able to live freely. We thank you, as the mother of this warrior, for raising him correctly to want to serve our country.

God be with you and your family, to comfort you and pull your family together.

God bless,

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SGT. Matthew Abbate our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Matthew. And to Matthew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Matthew, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,335 Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Matthew’s family and loved ones. Semper Fi !
