My poem, written for this Easter 2013, in respect of those who have given their very all to bring about a better world on our behalf and in recognition of their families, friends, loved ones and fellow soldiers who miss them so deeply at each Easter Sunday meal. May They R.I.P. We Will Remember Them.

Empty chairs each Easter Sunday
In homes across our land
Tears flowing gently
For each son or daughter
Mom or dad
Who gave a heart to Canada
Stood proud for me and you
Stepped forth to make a difference
In a world, in need, they knew
I've seen comets
I've seen meteors
But what I saw the other night
Was a glowing ball
Streak across the sky
In slow motion, in its flight
It glowed so bright, like mini moon
Its colour just the same
And then in the spirit with which it came
Turned to darkness once again
Overjoyed in what, I had seen
It was not a shooting star
It was a light that lifted high
In the brief moment of its spark
Oh lord, so many soldiers
So young and full of life
Have moved my heart
In this gentle way
As they've stood so far apart
Parted from their families
Parted from their friends
Stood so tall for who we are
Given all that could be given
Now held so close, within the hearts
Of those who miss them so
As bright, as seen, this palm Sunday's eve
Not unlike a story foretold
Of a son who gave his very all
So others would follow
Follow in a dream, a way
That a world would see a light
Of goodness spread across a world
At freedoms dawning sight
Oh Lord be near our soldier
Who also gave a life
For all to see a better world
On behalf of all of us
Lord, I dare not compare your son of life
To our warriors brave and true
I only give this humble voice
Of their efforts, the good, they do
Standing tall
Standing brave
Standing with all you shared
Within their hearts as young they were
To mold them
Brave for you

For the Families of Our Fallen This Christmas 2012

Angel's feathers falling
To remind us they're up there
Wind chimes sounding gently
To let us know the lord is near
Today is but a lull, in winter's nasty chill
One can see the storm clouds building
Circling, all around us now
We hold so close the warmth that was
To let it not escape
Yet no matter how hard we try
The warmth, it finds the gate
The chill it reaches down inside
Attaches to the spine
Sends shivers climbing through us now
Hearts are frozen held in time
For those who've lost a loved one, friend
Tis all they can endure
A hope, a wish, a prayer, t'would bring
Their loved one home again
Oh Lord their Soldier stood for all
Please warm these hearts so chilled
So they may find the warmth once shared
With this one no longer near
As they look out through the window
Let the moon and stars, shine bright
Let all about, it glisten forth
On this, this special night
Another hero gave his all
The one who led the way
For them to find a life beyond
And faith to find a day
A way to climb a staircase
To the heavens high above
To join a son, a daughter, friend
To be together once more as one
Oh lord you sent your son, our gift
To those who lend a heart
To those who've given all and more
For those life has forgot
We stand so near, so near Oh Lord
In praise, in solitude
Await a time, a time to share
A loved one entrusted unto you

Thank you Lord

For Remembrance Day 2012

Flurries of snow across our land
A chilly wind bites at the spine
As we stand for those who stood for all
In far off distant lands
Some recall the void, the pain within
Left in hearts, in minds, in lives
Who were impacted at the loss of those
Their lives never the same again
Friends recall fond memories
Child in tears for a mom or dad
A wife recalls the horror of war
That turned her life, a living hell
A mother or father stands in thought
A loss beyond belief
Of one who was their heart their soul
Since counting tiny toes upon their feet
Fellow soldiers, comrades
Loved ones, friends
In their minds they bring them near
In special thoughts of those they've lost
While fighting over there
We as Canadians
Stand proud, respect
All those who stood for all
Sent from a nation whose open heart
Has provided a world a home
Oh lord my heart so empty
As I stand, two minutes given
Just a moment's time
For the life they gave
On behalf of all of us
I cannot be prouder Canada
I could never turn away
From those who've shared
Their loved one forth
A debt we could not repay
Stand proud, Remember, Oh Canada
For those who stand for us
For their families, friends, and comrades too
For they gave for me and you
We are focused on the flower
Began in fields so far away
An image to be remembered now
On each Remembrance Day

I got to know Matt during high school. I can honestly say that he was the most strong minded person I have ever met. He kept asking me what my middle name was for weeks before I finally relented. His persistance in asking me left me with an indelible impression as to how he was as an individual. I have to concur with what someone else said about Matt, in that he was always the same person day in and day out. The world would be a much better place if there was more people like Matt.

Thanks Matt for all the memories you left me with, I'll always feel grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know you as much as I did.

Thanks for serving this country! I'll miss yeah!

For the Families of Our Fallen, This Christmas 2011

The wind is howling at my doorstep
This eve of Christmas Eve
The trees are bending low its clear
As Christmas day draws near
As I decked the tree this Christmas
I thought of those so brave
Of those who've lost a loved one
Who stepped forth for me and gave
They gave their all for Canada
A gift beyond compare
They stood a world away in time
Where few would tread or dare
So many loved ones share in tears
In thoughts they've left behind
Hugs once held so warm and close
A smile within a mind
The TREE has become so special now
For it holds a life time past
Its sparkling lights a memory's glow
Of a hero once held so near
As garland wrapped the tree in smiles
Those smiles of yesteryears
Those smiles held upon as face
Forever now held near
Each piece of tinsel a frozen tear
Shed at a time of loss
And now reflecting the reason why
For this hero was dearly loved
A true angel tops this Christmas tree
For is seen when looking high
As a loved one lifts their faces near
And a prayer races from a heart
A wish that they were standing near
A wish for laughter's sound
A warmth a hug once use to bring
Remains a memory oh so close
Oh Canada, our heroes gave
Their loved ones hold our hearts
Lord please reach out and hold them close
Please be so near this season forth

Watching the telecast from Kandahar on this Remembrance Day and hearing your name, Matthew, among 158 killed in Afghanistan still brings a tear to my eye but it also brings to mind the selflessness of men and women such as yourself. I talked about you and your family with a group of gr. 8 students last week and it brought about deep and thoughtful questions and insights from these young students. You may not be here physically but your spirit still resonates with so many. Just wanted you to know that we do remember and we are forever thankful.

You know you have had an impact on someone's life when there isn't a day that goes by when they don't think about you and the friendship shared.

Matthew Dinning On Wingham Cenotaph
Wednesday, October 12, 2011 5:10 am
The name of a Wingham soldier has been added to the Wingham Cenotaph. At last night's Committee of the Whole meeting, Deputy Clerk Kathy Adams told the committee that the process to add Corporal Matthew Dinning's name to the Wingham landmark has been completed in plenty of time for next month's Remembrance Day service. The addition of Matthew Dinning's name had been approved at an earlier council meeting, and Mac Anderson has asked council to accept his work as a donation. The Committee agreed to draft a letter to Mac Anderson expressing apprciation for his donation.

Portraits of Honour Tour Stops in Wingham
Wednesday, June 8, 2011 12:10 pm

A mural depicting the 156 men and women who have died in Afghanistan was on display in Wingham this morning. The Portraits of Honour mural is on a national tour that started May 31st at CFB Trenton and will finish sometime in November. Among the stops will be a big ceremony on Parliament Hill on Remembrance Day. The tour stopped in Wingham to honour Corporal Matthew Dinning who grew up there, and died in Afghanistan in April 2006. The mural was started in December 2008 by artist Dave Sopha who was inspired to do something after hearing about the 100th soldier to die. Sopha shut down his own studio and hasn't worked on anything but the mural. Each portrait takes 80 hours from start to finish. He says the response from the communites has been overwhelming in the week it's been on the road. Sopha spoke at a ceremony this morning along with Steve Tiffin of the Teeswater Kinsmen, Matthew Dinning's mother Laurie, as well as government and Legion representatives. The tour stops at the Listowel Kin Gala this afternoon at 3 before moving on to the Bagotville International Air Show on Sunday.

For the Families, loved ones, friends of or Fallen This Christmas 2010

Looking back, on childhood’s days
When wonder set the sails
And all imagined could come to life
Within thoughts, dreams as they played
When Santa rode a sleigh one eve
In every coming year
And magic taught sweet dreams to fly
To rooftops every where
Now sitting wishing Christmas Eve
Looking off into the night
Pleading for a shooting star
Enhance this wish with all their might
A wish for just a Christmas hug
From a soldier no longer here
No longer in our earthly world
Held close now, within near
The hearts of those who’ve felt such pain
At the loss of a hero’s life
A hero who stepped forth for all
Bring this hero close this night
As tears once more roll down a cheek
Another endless, sleepless night
Let our Lord brush close a warming hug
Of your loved one, bring them near
A gentle breeze, fond memories’ bring
To hold them ever dear

Wishing the magic of Christmas could bring the smiles, the hugs and the warmth of your loved one, into your home for Christmas. Ever in our hearts and always remembered. May our Lord bless you this Christmas and throughout the coming year.

I didn't know him personally, but CPL. Dinning has now touched my life.
On my desk at work this week, lied a name on a piece of paper. It read CPL. Matthew David James Dinning, Age 23.
The name was an opportunity to personally connect to one of our fallen soldiers, and I feel that I have, and more.
I took it upon myself to research some details about him and in doing so learned that we had a lot in common. Hockey, OPP family, fun loving, a bit of a prankster... the list goes on.

I appreciate and greatly respect what he gave to our country.
Too often we take what we have for granted and lose perspective on what was sacrificed for us to have the things we cherish and freedoms we enjoy. I want to thank CPL Dinning, for providing a small reality check to me. He may not be here, but he's certainly still helping Canadians. Thank you.

I will never forget.

Thinking of all those who have given so much; those who have paid the Ultimate Sacrifice, our Veterans, our serving soldiers, their families, loved ones and friends at this special time of Remembrance, 2010. We Do Remember.

They crawled on their bellies slowly
In the dirt, the dust, the slime,
Ran onto beaches, lived in fear, a moment out of time.
A time that changed a world in need
A time that set apart
Times that held a world so close, near and dear to every heart
The gas they sent, it took its toll
Many others held that ground
And challenged over and over again
Until freedom’s world was found
Liberated nations cheered delight
A world was aimed anew
But for so many who had lost a life
The tears fell hard and true
They stepped forth for their Nation
They stepped forth for a world to be
They stepped forth to chase the evil back
Keep their families safe and free
Through life times of years gone by
Up to this present day
A brethren strong with so much might
Stepped forth for you and me
We owe so much to those who’ve walked
In fear yet oh so strong
So brave in every step they took
So many now are gone
They have challenged life itself each day
And stood for what was right
They did it with their heart and soul
And stood with all their might
Lord love the souls of these so brave
And cherish duty’s call
For they gave all for a better world
On behalf of one and all.
At this time of Remembrance
Into our hearts we welcome those
Who have walked this solemn journey forth
For those who needed a friend along
We recall their families, loved ones, friends,
For so many have paid the price
Of freedom, or for a world in peace
Or to fight terror in another place
Oh Lord we hold their honour high
Our tears have washed the path
For those who take their torch to stand
As to them the torch is passed
Forever near we promise
We will honour these hearts so brave
And stand nearby their families, friends
For the sacrifice they gave

PTE. Dinning. Thats what I will always remember you as since we started our Military career together in St Jean 2003. I remember when we arrived at the Mega on the Sunday and thats when I first met you.. You were quiet and shy at first and so young but we became friends fast. We use to hang out and shine boots, iron etc..I remember the first weekend out when we went to the bistro. There was a big lightening storm that night and we watched from up on the 10 floor, it was pretty cool. I did manage to take some pics of you . You would always run away when I would try to snap some pics of you, you hated it.. But I did get some..

I have been thinking of you lately as I am now posted back to that very place as a recruit instructor. I see the faces of the kids in my platoon and I think of a moment in time when it was us there. I don't know if I said goodbye to you on grad day..

I was so sad and shocked when I heard what happened to you. Little did I know those 2 months I spent with you in the beginning of our Military Career's was the beginning of the end for you. You are a true hero, and I hope you are resting peacefully.

My heart goes out to your family. I'll always remember you.

The 2nd annual “2010 Ride for Heroes” Event is being held Saturday, August 14th, 2010 with the Motorcycle Ride starting in Wingham, and

The 2010 Ride for Heroes will honour Warrant Officer Gaetan Roberge, 45 years young when he fell to a ro...adside bomb doing a security patrol December 27, 2009. He was a proud member of the Royal 22nd Regiment out of Valcartier PQ, the famous “Vandoos”. It was members of the Military Police who served with WO Roberge in Afghanistan that submitted his name for the “Ride For Heroes” because this man was truly a Hero to all who knew him and served with him. In WO Roberge’s honour, the 2010 Ride For Heroes will set up a scholarship in his name at a secondary school in his hometown of Sudbury, ON.

Last year’s 2009 Matt Dinning “Ride for Heroes” and other private donations established a scholarship at Madill Secondary School in Wingham that will be a fitting legacy to Cpl Matthew Dinning for many years to come. It was Cpl Dinning’s father Lincoln Dinning, who asked that future “Ride For Heroes” be opened it up to honour other fallen heroes. We believe the 2010 Ride For Heroes honours Lincoln’s unselfish wishes. We still continue to honour Cpl Matt Dinning, ensuring that every "Ride For Heroes" will always either start or end in Wingham ON,

Registration Information:
Motorcycle Rider $30.00 and Passenger $10.00 (both include $5.00 BBQ Ticket)
Sponsored @ $100.00 (minimum pledged). No Charge Rider Fee plus will receive a BBQ Ticket

I’ve been thinking a lot about you lately, although we’ve never stood face to face.Your memory is so vivid in my life every day. He won’t ever let you be forgotten.

He still misses you every day and wishes you were here... The very mention of your name causes me to lose him for a second.

Lost in his thoughts of you. Lost in the memories. And when the day dream ends, it turns to the nightmare of your last day.

I guess I think about you a lot...He’s back where you gave your life. Driving down the very roads where you took your last breath. And missing you more and more every day.

He tells the best stories about you. They are so bittersweet. I wish I could have met you, to have heard your voice just once.

I hope you know that a part of you is still here... Your memory will never fade. You may be gone but we will never let you be forgotten.

We hope you are resting peacefully.

As I focus this Easter Sunday
My heart goes out to you
For a Chair is sitting empty
For a Hero Brave and True
Who gave a life for Canada
And a world we should become
A better world for all to share
A better world for everyone

They had raised their eyes in honour
To the Flag that flew above
They had sung its anthem strongly
In their hearts so full of love
It began for them in childhood
And sang out for years to come
At the vision of the Flag above
Onto which their hearts had clung
This special group, a brotherhood
That stepped forth to a country’s call
For them the Flag was calling
Could not turn away this love
For them it was the strongest call
The path that led the way
For they had held it steadfast near
Flying high above each day
And then one sad, so tragic day
The leaf flew from the sky
To wrap and hold them tightly bound
In return for all their love
It warmed their weary bodies
Clung closer to their hearts
And to hearts that shared the pain, their loss
At such a tremendous cost
Wrapped within the hug that flew above
Love’s vision, all their lives
Now carried forth in a country’s love
For their loving sacrifice

Lincoln,

Please accept my appologies for using this website as a means to express my condolences on the loss of both Matt and Vu.

I remember so many good times policing in Wingham with you, Steve and Laura. I was so glad that those of you from the OPP station took me under your wings as I wasn't that well recieved by the "Old Boys Club" of the town service.

It is hard to believe that something like this has happened so close to home. Please extend my condolences to all of the officers still active in Wingham that I knew during my short stay there.

My thoughts and prayers are with you now again.

This will be a difficult month for all of you with the loss of a member of your OPP family as well as Matt's birthday. Our sons were only a month apart in age and I know how bittersweet their birthdays are. The arms of your friends and family surround you as you go through another difficult service on Friday. God bless you Lincoln, Laurie & Brendon.

Thinking of Matthew Today. And searched his name on several search engines.
He was a brave man and deeply missed.
I was lucky enough to have met him as a child, and will never forget the "wet towel" mark he left on Brandons Leg at the lake.

To the Families of Our Fallen. Thinking of you this Christmas

The tears that fall to a winter’s sky
A loved one looks off into the night
For Christmas Eve is a lonely time
When a loved one is not held tight
We know they would have been here
For their families, for their friends
If they had not given our world the gift
In their service to all mankind
They stepped forth to change a world so wrong
Lift a country from it’s past
To provide a future for those in need
A future to go forth and last
But someone stole this life so strong
The beauty of a thought
Of stepping forth, to stand protect
And the goodness it could have brought
Please fill this void, warm this broken heart
Who looks out upon this eve
Troubled in a thought, a loss
Of someone now so close to thee
Oh lord please place a gentle thought
A memory of a time
When joy would fill this household warm
And keep it there at Christmas time
Let this family know we care so much
They should not be alone
Please help our thoughts be passed along
To warm those within this home
For Christmas is a time to know
That the coming of this child
Provides for all across our earth
To be reunited with that smile
The one that used to hold a hand
Or hold us in a hug
The one for whom we shed these tears
On this cold and lonely night
Please hold them close on Christmas morn
Celebrate the birthday of this child
Who came to bring salvation forth
To reunite them in awhile

By Roger Borchert

We pray oh Lord you stand near this Christmas to warm, to hold these families tight and mend these hearts so torn. Wishing you all the best this Christmas and throughout the coming year.

Bravery and courage for such a young man. I know from experience he was "pumped" and willing to risk his life. He was trained so well his actions were automatic. He is my hero, God bless. Let Christmass be all the good memories and the joy he brought.

I think of you and your family and their loss almost everyday. I thank you for your service and share in the sadness of your family's loss, such a brave and beautiful soul and guardian angel for your brother Brendon.
November 12, 2009
Thank-you for all that you have done. As well thank-you for looking after Brendon.
November 12, 2009
Matthew although I never had the honour of meeting you I am in awe of the life you lead and the choices you made at such a young age. I don't even have the words to say how appreciative I am of your sacrifice...so instead I promise I will show that appreciation in my words and deeds. I will never take my security, freedom and rights for granted. I promise to you also that you will NOT ever be forgotten. God blessed you with an amazing family...I got to meet your grandparents tonight and they are so proud of you and Brendan. I know you will all be united again one day but until that time you keep watch over your family from above and keep them safe.
And I look forward to meeting you one day...

On the eve of Remembrance Day, you are in my thoughts Matthew as you will be tomorrow at the 11th hour. The bravery and committment that our armed forces show each day amazes me and I so admire these qualities. Your family must be so proud of you and your brother. I heard from my sister that your brother arrived home safely from his mission. I'm sure you were there with him the entire time. Job well done.
Rest easy Matthew and know that your sacrifice is remembered and you are missed.

Lincoln, Laurie and Brandon - you will also be in my thoughts tomorrow (Nov. 11th) - so glad to hear that Brandon is back in your arms.

Sincerely,
Marlene Irwin (Joanne Currie's sister)

In Respect of our Military Families, Our Fallen, and Wounded on Remembrance Day

For what we take for granted
So many have died for
So many lives so vastly changed
At the dreadful cost of war
There is the good; there is the bad
A liberated nation cheers
Left in dread for those young souls lost
Devastated a world back home
Efforts to protect a peace
That no one thought was near
Laying lives upon the line
Visions at times so unclear
Lives touched by fear or lived in dread
Of wounded coming home
Of crosses lined in many rows
From a trip down a heroes road
I have been sitting on the bank
Of a river flowing by
Flowing heavy with the flood of tears
From their family’s eyes
For on this day of remembrance
Their thoughts, their dreams, their prayers
Are focused on a loved one lost
Leaving them in such despair
My heart it wants to reach out
Let them know I can’t forget
The gift they’ve laid for their fellow man
Tis the greatest gift to give
So humbled in a moment’s thought
So treasured was the step
That they took forth at their country’s call
Let it never be forgot
We measure freedom lightly now
For we’ve grown so familiar with
But if not for those who took this step
And gave this precious gift
Would we take it so very lightly
Would we have the chance to vent
About all that annoys and bothers us
Without retribution for what we’ve said
So thankful they stood so proudly for
All that we hold so dear
All that makes us Canada
For me it’s oh so clear
For some others they just don’t get it
They think so little of
What has been placed in front of them
At the cost of someone’s love
If I could send forth a message
Place it in a bottle, float it by
I’d provide a note of how much I care
For those whose tears are flowing by
If I could walk along this shore
Such a warming hug I’d give
To those who’ve lost a loved one
So we can live the way we live

I find myself consumed with thoughts of you. I miss you daily. I am so very proud to say that I knew you. They say you never forget your first love and this situation is no exception. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of my life.
June 15, 2009
I hear of your bravery and courage all over town, and wish to tell you that you'll never be forgotten to those that loved you most. I had never met you, but when you were killed there was a big funeral here in Wingham, and it seemed like everyone came. I even kept the newspaper article from the local newspaper about your sad death. Our history teacher, Miss Cruickshanks, talks about you all the time as the polite boy who sat near the back of the class. I sometimes think of how you had once walked the halls of F.E. Madill as just a regular student, just as I do today. You have shown me what real courage is and to stand up for what you believe in. Matt, to me you are a true hero.

Thinking of our Canadian Fallen Soldiers due to our efforts in Afghanistan. For them, their families, friends and fellow soldiers during this Easter Season: this Poem was written with the help of one of their Mothers. For her assistance and inspiration I am so very, very grateful.

We thank you Lord for being near
And for your gifts given unto us
We thank you too for sending forth
Your son’s so gentle touch
He provides our world with caring hearts
Without which we could not love
He gives strength to those who would step forth
In a world hidden but from above
They’ve stepped beneath terrors darkened clouds
Too many whisked away
We pray Oh Lord you gather them
Provide them a new day
Please take them close, near to thee
We entrust them to your care
Let them rest awhile hold them near
And set their spirits free
May they stand proud now
Among their peers
Families, friends, and loved ones too
For in the loving Grace of an angel’s touch
We’re drawn so much closer unto you

Thank you so very much for your efforts and sacrifice towards making our world a better place.

For the loved ones of Canada’s Fallen Heroes

May the New Year bring
A warmth to thee
That helps to heal the heart
That mends the fracture caused within
That’s torn you apart
May it whisper in your ear at night
That love is standing near
That you will never be alone
A warmth to quell your fear
May it welcome you in mornings’ light
And be near throughout the day
Standing near to comfort you
In a needed special way
May you always know
The time will come
Together you will be
Find in the tear a memory brings
The joy it helped you see

May the lord be near throughout the year, come and help in every day, that it takes for you to overcome this tragedy life did play.

For the families, loved ones, and friends of Canada’s fallen soldiers: It was written this evening with thoughts of what you and your families are going through at this season and could not hold it back any longer. It is my Christmas gift to you all.

I thank you for wandering near
As you think of where I lie
You think of what I went through
And a tear wells up inside

Let not that tear
Fall for me I’m sitting watching you
For I’m not there at all no more
I’m here inside of you

I’m sitting near within your thoughts
And in your memories
I’m just the thought a gentle breeze
In a gust of memory

I’m the gentle shiver when you are near
I’m the glimmer in your eye
I’m the sparkle that a teardrop brings
When it wells up in your eye

I’m the smile a fond moment brings
I’m the warmth you held so dear
Remember that, as time goes by
And know I’m standing near

As you look upon the Christmas tree
Shinning at this time of year
Know the Lord sent his only son
So that I could be standing near

May our Lord be near you all.

Our hearts and prayers go out to you all during this so difficult time of year. Please know that it comes complete with the glisten of tears held within the eyes of it’s, author Roger Borchert. Thank you so very much for the efforts of your loved one towards making our world a better place

Never Say Good Bye

I am walking with you hand in hand
I am speaking to your heart
Listen when I say to you
I’m here, we’ll never part.
I am with you in the day time
I am with you through the night
I hear the prayers you’re sending me
Can you hear me? I’m alright.
I am happy and I wear a smile
I’m with some friends you know
Open your soul and listen to me,
I’m here, I did not go.
I am holding you with loving arms
I am carrying you through your tears
I am listening to you tell the stories
Of our laughter through the years.
I am shining down a light of love
From the heavens in the sky
Please believe me when I tell you
I will never say good bye.

This poem was read tonight at a Candlelight Vigil and a light was lit for you, our son and brother.

In Respect and Remembrance of Our Fallen Warriors, their Mothers, Fathers, Wives, Children, Grandparents, Loved Ones, Friends, Fellow Troops, and all those Canadians whose hearts and tears lay at your side; I submit:

There are no words that I can place here in this registry that could ever justify or explain the loss of your loved one, friend, or fellow soldier. Please know that my family and I cannot stand idly by, without taking a moment, to express how much our hearts go out to you. There is no greater gift towards the future of our country, our world, our humanity, than the efforts and sacrifices made by our Canadian forces towards making our world a better place. Whatever the politics of the day, whatever the leadership of the moment, our selfless warriors have stepped forth to deploy to meet the needs of our changing world, with honour and an integrity that is unrivalled. We as Canadians truly bow and honour your efforts and sacrifice.

We have fallen on fields of battle
In lands so far from home
We have marched to war in honour
For those who’ve felt alone
We have defended those who couldn’t
And stood between the lines
Of two opposing armies
In this new world in our time
We have stood for those who cannot
For those who are oppressed
Standing shoulder to shoulder
To help others do their best
We have held our line with honour
Fury held at bay
Rebuilding a broken nation
To allow all to have a say
Our sons and daughters moms and dads
Stepped forth to make it so
A gift given for a better world
Such a precious gift you know
Our youth in pride have stepped forth
Do this job as best they can
Lay their life upon the line
Each true Canadians
They will not be forgotten
We can never turn away
They have taught the price of giving
In such an honoured way
For where would our world be then
If we just stood by and watched
Could we look ourselves in the eye
And say it wasn’t lost

Our tears. Our thanks. Our prayers.

With a heavy heart stepping forth
Please forgive me when I say
That I let you down in the past
In not a little way

I did not write to let you know
Just how much I cared
For the sacrifice you’ve given
For so many in despair

You stepped forth and joined our forces
Laid your life upon the line
To bring about a safer world
A new world in our time

Fellow soldiers friends and families
And those you held so dear
Still think of you most everyday
For us others it’s not so clear

We must slow down and take the time
Understand how great the cost
For if not placed in front of us
Can we comprehend the loss

Sometimes we’re just so very shy
Or we don’t know what to say
Or do not want to interfere
Or seem superficial in any way

I can no longer withhold my thoughts
I have to pass them on
For it breaks my heart just thinking of
All those left to carry on

Please know that you are in my prayers
Will be there for years to come
Know that you are in my thoughts
For the efforts you have done

Oh yes there is that special day
To remember not to forget
Those who’ve paid the greatest price
We can never repay this debt

Cpl. Matthew Dinning we knew you not, but our prayers reach out for you, your loved ones, friends, and fellow soldiers. We do, so dearly, thank you and your loved ones for your efforts towards making our world a better place.

July 20, 2008
On Saturday in April, 2006. as I was unloading equipment for a show at the Blyth Theatre in Blyth, ON, Corporal Dinning's hearse drove by in a somber line of cars headed to Wingham, just up the road. A song came to me in an inspirational moment as I stood on stage. I stopped the show, sang the song, the audience stood, held hands and sang with me It was a powerful, emotional moment. The song honours all Turtle Island's fallen warrior heroes. They will be in our hearts always. To hear it, go to www.shannonthunderbird.com, click on the whales on the main page. Rest in peace, youngster you are what makes Canada great.

On your 2 year anniversary, I was sure to have a poppy with me as a reminder to all. Matt, you always knew what I thought of you as a friend and that will never change.

To the family of Matthew,
We are thinking of you as it is coming up to two years since your loss. We also lost a loved one that day, Bombardier Myles Mansell. It is hard for us to believe that it has been almost two years now. As we've said to the other families, it is still so painful but at the same time we are so proud. We know you must feel the same. We think of you and the other families often and will especially be thinking of you on Tuesday.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dinning

I was Matthew's Grade 2 teacher at Alliston Union Public School. He was in my very first class that I had ever taught and I remember him vividly as a vibrant, happy, full of life young boy. I saw his picture today at our Remembrance Day Assembly at our school in Barrie and recognized him immediatley. It does not surprise me to hear that he chose to serve in our Armed Forces to aid and assist others. I also understand that he was hoping to follow in his father's footsteps to become an OPP officer.
I am very greatful to Matthew and all of the young men and women who are representing Canada in our fight for peace.
November 08, 2007
On November the 9th, our school is having a Remembrance Day Ceremony. In it this soldier is being remembered along with all others who gave their lives for us in this war. I am proud to say I will be standing up when Matthew's name is called and picture is displayed along with many other students in my school (who will be standing at the call of other soldiers' names) to show the great number of those who died for our country. This will touch the hearts of many, and bring the feelings even deeper into those attending the assembly. Thank you so much Cpl. Matthew Dinning. Thank you to all the soldiers who have served and are serving to make peace in other countries and in our's, you are all amazing.

Mr. & Mrs. Dinning,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you for your courage in coming forward with your story recently. Having lost my brother in Afghanistan less than a year ago, I realize how difficult it is to put yourself into the spotlight as you did. Please know that you have the full support of our family in your actions and that we stand behind you. Yours sincerely,

To the Dinning family:

Having just read your story on the Internet, I stopped for a few moments to say a silent prayer for you. Having lost my own son at age 19 in a non-military tragedy allows me to more appropriately sympathize with you. We parents who have lost our children know the pain that defies explanation to others. Time will never erase your love and memories for that child. You be strong! Have courage and never lose faith! You are not alone.

I prayed that the Creator, the One who loves us most send you the grace you need to sustain you. His love for you is constant. Matthew and my dear son John are in a better place enjoying perfect happiness. God willing we too will one day be reunited.

I wish you peace.

Sincerely ...

Richard V. from Windsor, ON.

My wife and I knew Matt from Petawawa. He was a great guy, youthful and professional! I was with Matt in Kabul my last few weeks in theatre, I regret now that I did not accepted his offer to drive around with him and the rest of his gang as they were getting familar with the roads conditions on the ground. That week Kabul was restricted to essensial duty road moves, this did not stop these men from doing their job, they drove off fearless. My final days that I saw Matt was in Kandahar. He stood tall and was on keen alert as the out going and in coming commanders signed over command of the new roto. After the change of command, in the heat of the afternoon, we all drank cold drinks and munched on light snacks while Matt stood watch giving protection to the VIP's. Matt was a vision of inspiration, on duty and proud to be serving in uniform as a police officer. Hanneke and I think about him often and will not forget his courage and desire to serve!

Matthew,
It's been a year now, and well, it still feels like yesterday.

There isnt a day that goes by, that I dont think about ya in one way or another.

You likely know, Ryan came up to Wingham this weekend, and yes, we (Ryan, myself and Bud) had an OV (or two) for ya!

Keep an eye on us from up there. we all miss you, and we all love ya! Give Dusty a slap on the back from me!

Take care, and God Bless

Lincoln, Laurie and Brendon - It's so hard to believe that Matthew is gone and harder yet to know that it has been a year.

Please know you are all in my thoughs

Those we love
are never really lost to us -
we feel them
in so many special ways-
through friends
they always cared about
and dreams they left behind,
in beauty that they added to our days...
in words of wisdom we still carry with us
and memories that never will be gone...
Those we love are never really lost to us -
For everywhere their special love lives on.

Matthew & Families,
Thinking of you during this time of grieving, I was your clerk who made all your arrangements to deploy. I remember you filled with excitement standing in the orderly room just a few days before leaving. I remember looking at your file on my desk afterwards wondering how you were making out. Matthew you were a dedicated soldier and will be missed.

There's not a day that doesn't go by that I don't pause to reflect on our soldiers, the ones we lost, the injuried and the ones still serving.

Matt may you continue to soldier on with my husband WO Frank Mellish KIA 03 Sep 2006.

Our prays are with you all

Matt,

When I heard about what happened to you on that tragic Saturday morning, I honestly thought I was living a nightmare. It made me upset and I constantly asked myself the following question: Why must the honourable always be the first to die?

You may be gone from this world, but you will always be remembered. I will always cherish the law debates we had against the girls in Grade 12 law (we really got them going didn't we?). I will always remember us carrying out the rugby pitch at Madill. We had a lot of good times, and I'm truly blessed to have met a person like you. There will come a day when "horse" and "blue thunder" will meet again. Until that day, God bless you and your family. I dedicate this to you:

Reflections of a Soldier

A soldier with honour
A man with soul
Stern eyes a glow
Integrity his to bestow

He fought for country
He stood by a friend
Never losing strife
A nation on the mend

His calling was freedom
Echoing through the skies
Sought by the brave
Responding to the cries

His purpose was choice
His calling was being
Believing what’s right
An unprecedented meaning

His gift was friendship
His word was his bond
Through every height and fall
His presence at the call

A life complete
A soul departed
Advent to friend
Loyal to his end

His memory persists
Never to depart
Forever he will stay
Forever in our heart

He really showed us what it's like to be Canadian by fighting for our country and helping other countries in need we should truly be greatful that we have such brave people in this country of ours and if Matthew has shown us one thing it is definatley bravery!

Hard to think it's been over two month already... Matthew; I was blessed to have you as a friend, my best friend. Every day I see something or do something that reminds me of the good old days that we shared together.

I was told something the other weekend, and every time I think of it, it brings a smile to my face. Every one reading this should take note... When thinking of a lost loved one, don't cry. Look up to the sky and smile; because we know they are looking over us with a smile on their face.

Always Remembered
Never Forgotten
Always in my Heart

I miss ya bud.
and until we meet again

God Bless.

As Matthew's uncle the lesson I think we can all learn from Matthew is from the example of how he lived his life. Matthew decided who he wanted to be in life, he then took a stand and stood by his principles, and then just got on with it and made it happen. Just imagine what type of world we would have if everyone lived like that. Matthew is an example of fearlessness. He wasn't afraid to live life to the fullest. I believe that Matthew is looking down on us and encouraging us all not to be afraid to truly live our lives to the fullest. Matt, thank you for your example.
May 23, 2006
Only shortly known but will be sorely missed
May 21, 2006
I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Please know that your loss is also Canadians loss when we lose someone who loved our country so much that they were committed to making the world a better place. Our country, our world, is a safer, more peaceful place because of people like Matthew who are willing to protect our country even though it cost him his life. Thank you Matthew. May god bless him. And my god bless your family on the rough road you must travel right now.

Linc. I wanted you to know my wife and I's thoughts were with you. We, too, have two boys, and watching them be boys is something else indeed. I appreciated your eulogy that day, especially how you mention how lucky you were to have seen him become a man. The country is proud of him too. I was proud to be one of the 4 MC's in the escort that day.

Dear Lincoln and Family,

We are saddened by the passing of Matthew. Although we did not know him well, we have often heard many wonderful tales of this remarkable young man. Although this offering is small at this time, if you ever feel the need to exchange ideas with a "fresh voice", your Mom has Rick's e-mail. She can put us in touch and it will be an honour to talk to you.

God bless and much love,

Judith, Imre and Rick Sipos

Linc and family,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of your son Matthew. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this sad time. May you be comforted by the many wonderful memories of this amazing boy.
May 11, 2006
I knew him well for Too short a time! I Worked at the golf course in Wingham with Matt and he was a great "kid" and well on his way to being a great man. I am proud to say I knew Matt and will always miss "what could have been" ? He was TOO FULL OF POTENTIAL! And was well on his way to acheiving that potential! I may not have talked to or met up with Matt for weeks, months or years, because of work, family, sports? Any number of things, but its the hard fact that I CAN NEVER talk to him again that is really tuff to deal with.

TO THE FAMILY OF CPL MATTHEW DINNING. I WENT THROUGH BASIC TRAINING WITH MATT. I WAS THERE AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF HIS CAREER. ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE DONE BASIC UNDERSTAND THE BOND THAT YOU FORM WITH THESE PEOPLE OVER A VERY SHORT TIME. I REMEMBER THE FIRST DAY I MET HIM. WE BECAME GOOD FRIENDS AND OFTEN HAD MANY CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. I REMEMBER HIM AS LAID BACK AND QUIET. HE SEEMED TO LIKE TO TAKE WALKS AND HAVE SOME QUIET TIME. I REMEMBER SPENDING A LONG TIME TRING TO TAKE HIS PICTURE AND HE TRIED TO KEEP HIDING FROM ME. THANK GOD I DID MANAGE TO GET A FEW. HE WAS GOOD TO ME AND TO EVERYONE, HE WAS A VERY CLOSE FRIEND TO ME THERE AND I WILL ALWAYS HAVE GOOD MEMORIES OF THAT SPECIAL TIME, TO THE FAMILIES, MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY. I HOPE HEARING EVERYONES SPECAIL MEMORIES OF MATT WILL HELP.....
May 11, 2006
Our deepest sympathies go out to your family and friends. Our son/brother/husband/father Cpl. Randy Payne also fell with Matt on that tragic day. No words can ever change what has happened, but please remember that we grieve for and with you. They have fallen at such a young age so that others may grow old because they have made the ultimate sacrifice to our country. They proudly performed their duties until the end.

Matt and Randy where close. They roomed together overseas and had many common interests, including hockey which they both excelled at, and they worked out all the time at the gym together.

As I have said to my brother Randy, “Rest in eternal peace… for your work here on earth is done and you have been called to a higher place to join the army of angels where you are needed more…”

May your memories bring you comfort in the trying times ahead.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We have a son in Afghanistan with the Canadian military and although we pray for the safe return of all soldiers, we are thankful that Corporal Dinning was inspired to defend and protect, not only Canadian values and the war on terror, but most importantly the safety of his fellow soldiers. In talking to our son, he has expressed how he and his peers have experienced a great loose and that their resolve has strengthened. Corporal Dinning is and always will be a hero.

Laurie, Linc, and Brendon:
During the past week I've thought about things that could be said in this time of sorrow that could bring comfort to you and to your family, but there simply aren't any.
Its too bad that it takes a loss like this for us to realize what people mean to us, and what sacrifices people are making to make this world a better place to live in.
Matthew grew to be a good man, a man who in 23 short years accomplished more than some will in their life time.
Thank you Matthew for being brave enough to volunteer for something that most of us wouldn't be brave enough to volunteer for.
Rest in peace Matthew, and thank you.

Linc, Laurie and Brendon - I am sadden by your loss. I first met Matthew when he was at Wingham Detachment with his father. Matt had completed college and came for a ride along with myself. He was a smart boy who was following in his father's foot steps. I have since left Wingham Detachment but called one night shift a few weeks back and spoke to whomever answered the phone - it was Linc. He quickly caught me up on all that I have missed in the office, but the first thing he told me was his boy Matthew had made military selection and was in Afganastan. I couldn't see your face Linc but I knew how proud you were of Matthew, always be that proud! You are an outstanding police officer - one of a kind. Matthew was an outstanding man - one of a kind!

When I heard of the tragic loss of two members of the Military Police community, I felt numb and for a short while the world seemed surreal. Although I never met Corporal Dinning or Corporal Payne I felt as though they were my brothers and in a real sense they are brothers in arms. I too have read the postings on this site, although I’m saddened at the loss, I take strength from the sentiments and thoughts of not only fellow MPs but of persons from all around the globe. I know that no words can truly express the loss and emptiness felt by the families of both Mat and Randy but take comfort knowing they touched so many both in life and in death.

To the family and friends of Mat Dinning and Randy Payne, on behalf of my wife Tammy and all members of the CFNIS Esquimalt Detachment my most heartfelt condolences.

Matt Dinning was one of my closest friends. We met each other after basic training and went to CFMPA together. Even after graduating we would co-ordinate our leave time. He was the type of guy who, when I had to work Christmas, flew 4000 km across the country just to hang out.
Matt was quick witted and kept you on your toes and was someone you could always count on. I am proud to have served with him and it was a priveledge to have know him. I send my condolences to his family and I will miss him greatly.

April 26, 2006
Dear Dinning Family,

I did not have the honour to meet Matthew; however, upon hearing of this tragedy, I, as a fellow Military Policeman, felt compelled to find out who this man was. The fact that Matthew had decided to serve his country speaks of his character, but it is only ones God, ones family and ones friends who truly know the soul of a person.
As I read every entry in this guest book, with tears in my eyes and a complete sense of loss and sadness, I truly mourn for your loss. You had the opportunity to know and love an exceptional person.
To Matthew's friends and co-workers, honour his memory and remember and cherish the good times.
To the Dinning Family, there is nothing I can say to ease the pain of what you now and will continue to feel. You are in my prayers and God Bless you.
April 26, 2006
To Matthews family we are saddened for your tremendous loss.

April 25, 2006
I am so very sorry for the loss that your have had to experience. No parent should ever have to berry his or her child. As young as Matt was he was mature beyond his years. I met Matt while we were on our basic training courses in St Jean. Matt and I completed our Military Police Training together 4, May 03. Matt was sharp as a tack and so quick witted. He always took the time to listen when something was on your mind. Matt stayed with my family and I while on a visit to Thunder Bay and was well liked by all. We were all shocked by the news of Matt’s passing, however, honoured to know he died doing what he loved, serving his country. Matt will be greatly missed however never forgotten. Matt is in God’s hands now, a soldier forever in our hearts.

He believed in what he was doing and did it in a way that made you proud to be in the same trade as him. I will miss most his off the wall sense of humor that kept everyone who know him on their toes! We are diminished by his loss but strengthened by having known him.
April 25, 2006
Thank you for giving yourself to a service that is all too often misunderstood. Not many will walk your shoes brother... not many can for it takes somebody of your nature. People will speak of you and they will hold their heads up high when they do. Rest in Peace Brother.

April 25, 2006
My time as Colonel commandant of the Military Police Branch ended before Cpl Dinning's enrolment and training. However, I know that he became a strong and valued member of the Military Police family, and it is my loss not to have known him and to have served the Branch when he was a member. His death is a tragic loss to the Military Police family and to the CF. My thoughts and prayers go out to his own family in their grief. LEST WE FORGET.
April 25, 2006
It is with a heavy heart that myself and my family offer our deepest sympathy for the grief you must bear. This ‘ordinary’ Canadian family will never forget his sacrifice. God bless and give you strength for the burden you must bear.
April 25, 2006
The Dinning Family,
As CFB Petawawa MP Detachment Commander, I had the privilege of welcoming Matthew to his first posting as a newly badged Military Policeman. It was an honour to serve with a young man whose pride and enthusiasm in being a soldier and a policeman was so obvious. Please know that those of us who share Matthew’s uniform also share your sorrow.
April 25, 2006
Our condolences on your loss. We mourn with you and the sacrifice your son and family has made to support the goal of peace in the world.

April 25, 2006
When a loved one as Cpl. Matthew Dinning goes from active living, it is easy for us to turn to God. There is nowhere else to go! It is then we realize the "nowhere" means God is "now here."

God is everywhere all the time, always healing, teaching and loving us. Things look bleak now, but we know our Creator is going to show up and stand up.

God is the spirit of life. Life is not merely what we live, it is what we are. There is always a ray of hope, for God can and will help us. God maintains and sustains the energy of life that we are.

We must depend on the life of God in us. We must know at all times, in all situations, under every possible circumstance, we can depend on God. God, the good, powerful essence of life is always within us, always around us, always holding and lifting us up. The very essence and energy of God is actually what we are. In times of difficulty, we must remember, so we can live life to it's fullest.

Now abides faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is LOVE.

God's faithful Love abides forever.

This June will have marked the three year anniversary of the beginning of our military careers. Matt and I met in basic training, and from the instant I met him I felt like I had already known him a lifetime. He will always be remembered for his quick-wit and charm but most of all his ultimate sacrifice and bravery. My deepest condolences go out to the Dinning family and all of Matt’s friend’s.

My, and all North America's, sympathy and condolances to the family and friends of Cpl Dinning. I have friends who emigrated to the states from Afghanistan and understand why and what he was trying to protect. God bless.
April 25, 2006
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Dinning family and numerous friends during this time. I had the honour of meeting Matt in St. Jean in 2003 on our Basic Training course and stayed with him through MP QL3 training in Borden. Matt was a great guy with always the right thing to say. He was a tough competitor that was dedicated to all he put his mind to. He was a great friend who took time to come up to Thunder Bay to our wedding and fit in instantly with all our friends and family. Matt will be greatly missed.
April 25, 2006
Matt Dinning was one of my best friends. I grew up with him during public and highschool. Even before he died I would brag and talk about him a lot. Matt loved his family and friends and never spoke bad about anyone. Most of my best memories involve Matt weither it was hockey, hanging out, sitting in our hot tubs and talking for hours, shoveling roofs on saturday nights, or sports. For those of you that don't personally know Matt. He is a perfect example of a best friend. Although I haven't seen him very much over the last few years since he was living out his dream, it still feels like he lives on summit drive. Matt, I know your up there with Brett and I have never been so proud to be someones friend. You are my hero and I will never stop talking about you. I know you will look down on all of us down here. Thanks for the awesome times and I will see again. ALLLLLRIGHTY THAN!!!!

April 25, 2006
I worked with Matt as a dispatcher in CFB Petawawa and was privy to and the butt of some of his practical jokes. He made all of those around him richer for the experiance. He made a difference, and he will be sorely missed.
April 25, 2006
On behalf of my family, we wish to extend our sympathy and condolences. No words can express our deep felt sorrow at the loss of a fellow Military Police member. We can take solace in knowing that Matthew’s dedication, duty and honour will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this solemn time, God Bless.
April 25, 2006

Words cannot express our feeling with the loss of someone we love. Time will heal the pain felt, memories are everlasting. Matthew has paid the ultimate price. He gave himself so others could live a better life. With heavy hearts a Country now knows Matthew. He will be missed by all. He will be in my childrens prayer. They will know Matthew and who he was and what he has done. Saint Michael has taken another Policeman to walk Heavens beat. God bless you at this time.

April 25, 2006
Being a fellow Military Police member assigned to the CFNIS CR, my duties would routinely bring me to CFB Petawawa. It was during one such visit that I had the pleasure to meet Matthew. My first impression was that of a strong, capable, earnest, yet jovial young man, who was instantly likeable. One visit turned to more, and I had the opportunity to occasionally meet with Matthew while he was on shift. I so enjoyed the humorous conversations we had. Matthew had a manner about him that would leave you smiling irregardless of how hard the day had been.

It was my most distinct honour to have known such a unique soul as Matthew. God grant him peace.

My most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
April 25, 2006
Our deepest condolences to the Dinning Family,

I hope that you can find even the smallest amount of solace in knowing that his sacrifice was made doing something that I’m sure Matthew truly believed in and for this he honours us all.

April 25, 2006
Matt & I were roommates at our MPAC in Halifax in 2003. Having grown up in the same area we found plenty of familiar ground to talk about...especially our families. Matt always had a warm smile and cheerful conversations when we later would meet in St. Jean and again in Borden during our days at the CFMPA. Matt your love of your family was always plain to see and admired. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten....Murf
April 25, 2006

April 25, 2006
I had the good fortune to work with Matt for approximately three months at the Military Police Detachment, CFB Petawawa. Although we worked on different shifts, we did respond to a few calls together. However, most of the time I spent talking with Matt, was during shift changes. I certainly remember him to be eager, a quick learner and having a great sense of humour. Matt was a dedicated policeman and will be missed. My sincerest condolences.
April 25, 2006
I had the pleasure of working with Matt for only a few months at the MP Det in CFB Petawawa. He had a quiet and calming demeanour about him and a strong sense of duty. He will be missed. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I worked with Matt at 2 MP PL. I remember seeing him a few days before he left for Afghanistan. He was so happy to be going over, he was a great soldier and police officer. My prayers are with you.

It is with profound sadness that I send out condolances to you and your family from ALL members of the Military Security Guard Unit, at the loss of such a fine young Military Policeman. It was a senseless act that took his, and his comrades life. We can only hope that his loss will not be in vain.
April 25, 2006
It is with the greatest sorrow, that we lose a member of our Military Police family, the written word can never replace the fond memories. Matt served with pride and honour in our Canadian Forces, a duty that is never taken lightly and a passion shared by only a few of Canada's great citizens. Today I thank you for your contribution too your country, for protecting others and for sharing the vision of world peace. Your ultimate sacrifice will not be forgotten, bless you as you watch over the remainder of military personnel serving on foreign soil.
Too the family and loved ones left to share the memories of Matt, my sincere condolences and sympathy.

To the Dinning Family:
As a serving Military Policeman I too mourn the loss of your son. I did not know Matt but he is a part of that larger family - the Military Police Branch and the Canadian Forces. I feel your loss deeply, the more so because one of my junior members was an academy classmate and speaks very highly of him. Reading some of the other posts here by other MP that I know and respect who knew Matt, I know he is the type of soldier I would have loved to have in my circle of co-workers and friends. Our loss is Heaven's gain as another of God's soldiers is called home. Please accept our condolences and our heartfelt thanks for ultimate service Matt provided to the cause of freedom and this country.

Securitas. Stay Safe.

We met back up again when he decided to volunteer for close protection training. Matt was an individual, quick-witted, smart, and always had a one liner to finish your conversation. Matt was a great friend, who always took time to come and visit me in Ottawa. He will be missed, but, never forgotten.

Dearest Dinning Family: My husband and I are both Military Police Officers and have been for over 20 years. Neither of us had the privilage of knowing Matthew but cannot help feeling like we have lost a member of our own family, because we did. From reading all the other notes it is evident Matthew was a wonderful human being and my heart is sad that he has been taken from you. In time, may you find peace within, knowing he is in a better and peaceful place, watching over you. May your memories live on inside your hearts, until you are with him again someday. Know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.....

To the family and friends of Matt:

It is often difficult to find the words to express how one feels at a time of such great loss. My heart is filled with pain and sorrow at the loss of a great soldier and a close friend. I had the pleasure of going through CP training with Matt, a course that taxed us to our physical, mental and emotional limits. Through it all Matt could be counted on to keep things light with a witty joke or a funny comment, but he also knew that when it was time for business, there was no joking around. I was always amazed at the maturity and discretion that he exhibited for such a young man. These qualities made him an exceptional soldier. I will miss Matt a great deal, but I know that he would want us all to carry on and to honour him that is what we should all do.
April 25, 2006
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. What a hero your son was!

Dear Dinning family:
Id like to wright to you today to express my loss for your son and the prayers that I give towards your family. For your son has touched my life not only as an intelagent, funny, quickwitted police officer, but as a role model for me as I was under his wing for 4 months as a coop student. I experienced the laughter and joy he so often brought to the work environment and the good times we had driving around in the police cruiser, telling jokes and making small talk. I would also like to thank you as a family for rasing such a wonderful person because that is one of the things i was going to do after i made it into the military police. I was going to walk up to matt and say "thanks for all of the good times matt and i hope i can make some little co-op kids day the same way you made mine officer Dinning". I will continue to pray for matt and you as a family and i just hope one day we will all be with mattt again. Let the heavins take you in my lost friend.
April 24, 2006

To the Dinning family,

--- "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. " ---

To the entire Dinning Family, we express our deepest condolences and will keep you in our hearts and prayers. Our son is also an MP in the Canadian Forces and he told us that he shared a room with Matt in Halifax for some of the pre-screening programmes. He mentioned that Matt was a shy, quiet fellow who loved his family and that he was a good person. He also said that he would trust his life without hesitation as Matt was a good person, a good soldier and a good MP. We now have a bond with you and your family - a silent bond of the military family. May God bless you and keep you as Matt is at peace and is a Canadian hero.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
