Melvin Turpin was one of the main reasons that I started following UK BB and still follow the Cats! Still breaks my heart to this day!! You will ALWAYS be # 54. RIP Big Dipper.
October 11, 2013

I met Mel when he was working as a security guard in Central Illinois in the 90s. He was such a nice man - very easy to talk with. It was just so surreal to be around someone that had played at such a high level for a program like Kentucky and in the pros. I was grateful for the opportunity to talk sports (including the classic Illinois/KY snow game in CHampaign in 1983?) with such a nice and kind man. RIP, Melvin

I grew up in a house that was ALL UK! My dad bled blue, so it meant we ALL did! He loved each and every player, and I did too. We both loved to watch him play.If my dad were here today he would be saddened,as I am saddened, to see such a young, and wonderful human being be taken so soon.On behalf of my beloved father, and speaking for myself,Mel Turpin, you will always be in our hearts, and in the hearts of many! You are free now and knowing that you are at peace is a comfort. God Bless your family that you left behind.I know that they are so proud of you,as we all are!

I grew up in Fork Union, VA where my father was Athletic Director at Fork Union Military Academy for nearly 40 years. I remember the winter of 1980, watching the FUMA Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament that was a 2-night tournament featuring the BEST prep schools around. I was 12 years old at the time, and will never forget the unbelievable show that Mel and the FUMA team put on out on the court that night. I was in awe, and specifically remember a reverse dunk that Mel threw down which sent the FUMA cadets into a frenzy.

I'm sure there are countless memories each of us share of Mel the player and Mel the person -- and Mel the father -- and I can only imagine what a loss his family and closest friends must feel, as I, too, feel deeply saddened by the passing of this true legend and truly loved human being.

Rest in peace, big "Turp."

My deepest sympathy to the entire family -- especially to Kiel and the children,

Will Blair

July 10, 2010
Whatever personal issues Mel may have had, I will remember him as a wonderful basketball talent, a gentle giant, a "jokester", and a great representative for UK. He was asked one time why he would stop and talk with people he didn't know about UK long after he was no longer playing. His response was that UK fans supported him his entire career. When one stopped him to chat, Mel felt that might be the only opportunity the fan had to speak personally with an ex-UK player, and he wanted to give back. Mel, you did give back. I'm sorry we couldn't help you in your time of need. RIP.
July 10, 2010
Sorry to hear about your loss. For those who have not had the experience, it is impossible to understand the depth of the pain caused by losing a loved one in such a tragdy way. In fact, the human mind only gradually accepts the terrible reality. We cry out due to the pain in our heart. our tears are not unnotice by our heavenly father, although your deep pain will not easily disappear. The Bible assures us that Almighty God is near to those who are broken in heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
July 10, 2010

July 10, 2010
Great UK player, Hope all goes well for the family
July 10, 2010
This is a tremendous loss to the entire Big Blue nation. Those who may have never seen Mel play basketball missed a treat. He's easily among the top 10 players I've watched @ UK in 35 years. I always rooted hardest for him because, if you knew his full life's story, you couldn't help but be impressed of how he got to Kentucky. There were 3 things that contributed in my opinion: Undeniable talent, certainly a non-"bigman on campus persona" and many people deeply wanted Mel to be a success. Everyone loved him. I am indeed very sad as I write this note to his family and many friends.
July 10, 2010

Melvin was indeed a gentle giant - to a 5 yr. old little boy - with great inspirations from him - Mel used to come in our small grocery store in N. Middletown, Ky.in the 80's - always had a smile, a b'ball tip, and a pat on the head for the "little man" - as he called our son,Rob - they would discuss his plays at the last game - and he would "take his advice" for the next game - he would always say - what do YOU think I should've done ?? - He certainly won our little town (and boy's)heart - so, so sorry for the state's and Mel's family loss - we have indeed lost a "gentleman of the blue" -

I met Melvin while working with him for a security company. He was one of the kindest people I have ever met. His smile could light up a room. He and Karry used to come in to our office and he was always smiling and joking. I used to tell him I liked standing beside him because that was the only time in my life I have felt small. He was a wonderful person and will be truly missed by everyone. My prayers go out to his family. Love you Melvin.

I remember watching you with my father when you played for UK. I ran into you again at UK hospital when my Nephew was there. We sat down and talked about the good times when you played for UK. We laughed about all the times people would bring you food and how you said McDonald's was your home away from home. May God hold you in his loving arms and bless your family during these hard times. Rest in Peace

I was a sophomore at UK when I (literally) ran head-first into Melvin Turpin on my way to class. I remember apologizing profusely, and he just laughed and asked me if I was all right. He was a gentleman, in a game where gentlemen seem to be fewer and farther between nowadays. My heartfelt sympathy to his family for the loss of this gentle giant.
July 09, 2010
Wish i could have seen you play...heard you were a beast on the court, and gentile giant off. best wishes to you and your family.

Kentucky has loss an all time legend! Known by many as a twin tower, Melvin provided many memorable moments in the history of Kentucky basketball. May he forever be remembered for his greatness and gentle spirit.

As a Lexington native, I was always proud of the great accomplishments of the many great individuals transitioning from Lexington public school basketball programs (especially the BS Defenders) to the historical program at the Univesity of Kentucky. The contributions they made to the world of UK basketball were huge!

Prayers go out to the family, friends, former team members and coaches as they mourn his passing. He will truly be missed but his memories will forever live on in our hearts.

Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal! Rest in peace Big Mel!

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Mr. Turpin 4 years ago while visiting family in Kentucky; a real pleasant gentleman. My thoughts and prayers goes out to his family.
July 09, 2010
My first memory of Melvin was watching him hold Patrick Ewing to 8 points in the 1984 final four.

I had the great fortune of meeting Melvin personally many years later. On my way to a weekend drill with the Marines, Melvin and I crossed paths at a Super America around 5:00 AM. I thanked him for being a childhood hero and shook his hand. It made me sad he was working a tough job for the city of Lexington, instead of spending time in an NBA retirement.

I am glad I was able to see him play and I feel fortunate I was able to meet a childhood hero. I wish Melvin's family the best.

July 08, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
