I am so sad to hear about Dr. Palmers death. I just started reading his books about 3 months ago and am happy to have found his books. I was at Barnes and Noble and saw second opinon and bought it and started reading it and could not put it down. I am so happy to have started reading again after 30 plus years of not. I totally love the way he wrote and have 9 of his books and will be getting the rest very soon!

I am a big fan. Although I never had the privilege of meeting him, he did respond to an e-mail I sent him several years ago. I was blown away. I have read and have all his books. I am a mental health nurse so it's no surprise I loved his books. I guess my absolute favorite was "The Sisterhood." My condolences to his family. I will miss new books by him but I can and will re-read the ones I have.

My connection and friendship with Michael Palmer dates back twenty years ... to when my family members were injured in a boating explosion at the Charles River Yacht Club. My grandmother spent six months at Mass Massachusetts General Hospital recovering from her injuries. I was living in Beacon Hill and working down town as a paralegal at the time. I visited my grandmother every morning before work, during every lunch hour, and again every night. I did this because I wanted to be by her side, and also, because she refused to eat unless I was present. Because she would dose off quite a bit during our visits, I often brought a book along to keep myself occupied. On a day when I had either finished a book or forgotten the one I was reading at the time, I visited the hospital's lobby shop in search of a new one. 'Extreme Measures' jumped out at me. Was it the title ... the cover ... the description? I thought mostly the genre. I began reading 'Extreme Measures' in my grandmother's room while she slept, until one day when she suprised me. I paused at the end of a chapter and the woman who I believed was sleeping said "Don't stop there; keep reading." This meant two things; Grandma had ecome a Michael Palmer fan; and, most importantly, she was getting better. After 'Extreme Measures', Grandma sent me on a mission ... to find all other books written by Michael. My journey began in the same lobby store where Michael just happened to be signing books at the time. The line was long and Grandma was waiting, so I slipped inside the store. There, I found no more books ... they were all out front at Michael's table. Knowing Grandma would soon have lunch, I headed back to her room. As I was leaving the hospital to return to work, a gigantic man approached me. It was Michael. He asked me what I thought of the crowd which had formed for the signing. I told him how impressed I was and how sorry I was that I couldn't stay. I explained my situation and told Michael I needed to hurry back to work. He was pleased to hear about Grandma being a fan and, before I scurried off, he offered to sign the copy of 'Extreme Measures' I had in my bag. "What is your grandmother's name?" he asked. After Michael addressed the book to my grandmother, I thanked him and raced back to work. I could not wait to tell Grandma over a luke warm hospital dinner that evening that I had met the author of the book; that he had even signed the book. When I arrived at the hospital that night and entered Grandma's room, I realized she had company. That company was actually feeding her dinner. That company was Michael.
Imagine; such a busy man taking the time to stay in town an extra few hours to visit someone he had never before met. Imagine; a large stranger getting my grandmother to eat for him. Imagine; this same person bringing signed copies of books he had written at the time to my grandmother. Imagine; this man who didn't live nearby ultimately visiting my grandmother on a regular basis and becoming involved in her complex medical issues. Imagine; this man staying the course until Grandma's discharge, and visiting her at her home or calling as often as he could, for the next seven years, until she died. At that time, I realized it was fate which caused me to pick up 'Extreme Measures' that day in the lobby shop. It brought Michael into our lives. He greatly enhanced the quality of my grandmother's remaining time here, on earth. Michael remained a close and loyal friend to me, and a mentor in my own writing until the end.

I'm sure you all CAN imagine these random acts of kindness having occurred ... because we are, after all, talking about Michael.

I am shocked and saddened by Michael's timely death. I will always remember and cherish memories of that dinner with Michael in CT when the idea for FATAL hatched out of the first conference relating vaccines to developmental delays. Thank you for helping educate the public on possible vaccine dangers. Thank you being the father my brother never had in Cincinnati so many years ago. Thank you for welcoming me and my daughter into your home. I look forward to being scared to death one more time when your last book comes out posthumously. And I am so happy that your writing tradition is being carried into the next generation. My heartfelt condolences to your huge extended family, especially to Luke. Your Dad was SO proud of the man you have become.

I met Michael Palmer in 1987 when I was a rookie Falmouth Police officer. We struck up a conversation after he treated an accident victim I was at the emergency room to interview. Dr. Palmer was easy to talk to and was interested in my job. We became fast friends. Working midnight shifts were pretty quiet back then and I would drop in with fresh patries to chat with Michael and his ER staff. When he was writing Extreme Measures he asked my permission to use my name and profession in his book. I was flattered by the gesture and could not wait until the book was released. Dr. Palmer was a wonderful person and I was honored to have known him. He touched my life and I will miss him dearly.

Dear Luke and family. I met your dad while working with Nicole at the Middle School in Swampscott. He was a warm and friendly man. One day we were at the house in Swampscott and Luke was about 4 and my son about 6. The boys were playing in the pool and Michael came out to play with the boys and named one of the characters in the book he was writing after my son, Joe Leone. He also helped my husband through a difficult time with alcohol addiction. My sincere sympathy to all of you. He truly was a good man and father.
November 06, 2013
I was fortunate to have read all of his books and 'spoke' with him on line- my deepest sympathies to his family & friends. He was a terrific author and will be missed
November 05, 2013
Michael Palmer was my parents' physician here in Falmouth, and both thought the world of him. I had the great fortune of meeting Dr. Mike years ago, and know why my mother spoke so admiringly of him even as she was in her nineties. All those things in the obituary about Dr. Mike's ethos are an absolutely accurate summary of what he was all about. My family and I extend our condolences to Dr. Palmer's family.
November 05, 2013
To Michael's family,
My deepest sympathy to all. Ever since I first met Michael and he realized we shared a name and a love of medical mysteries, I felt a closeness, from his greeting me with "I recognize you but the. name escapes me" or introducing me to the family and friends at his book launches as "my friend, Michael Palmer".
He will be missed.

Michael was a dear friend who i will miss so much. First met in falmouth ER, kept in touch over the years. He gave so much to everyone around him. He loved his sons so very much, and was so proud of them.
He was always willing to help me find interesting people to do short docmentary videos about, but when it came to asking him....oh no...."i have to stay right sized". So no "mikey" films!
We would meet from time to time, discuss our children, and life. I will miss that, and Michaels love of life. He was a great man.

The world has lost a real hero, and we are all so deep in grief. But Michael's loss is felt so deeply because his life was lived so fully.

To me, he was a friend, mentor and inspiration. I was always in awe of his work ethic. When he wrote, he was all in, focusing for hours and hours without distraction. And yet, he often ended his emails with something like "back to work ... unless you need me." And that was even more of an inspiration. His heart was enormous.

I think I'll miss him every day. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We were all so lucky to have known him.

To the entire Palmer family:

I wish I had half the skill that Michael had so I could put into words the feelings of sadness at this great loss, and joy of being blessed with such a great friend as Michael. He really loved the game of bridge, and this was the way we met. Over the years we became close friends. He always was so proud of Luke taking up writing! Several years ago, when I told him I was headed to Brazil on business for Gillette, he provided me with 5 copies of different books he had written that had been translated into Portuguese and he signed each book for me. On a personal note, he and Dick Dugas were over the top helpful recently in a time of great need which is something for which I will be forever grateful. I thought the obituary I read in the Boston Globe did a great job of capturing the goodness that this man personified.

I will miss him greatly.

Dear Palmer family,
I am so saddened by your loss.
Michael came to my ER to work a thousand years ago (it seems). I was brand new to Emergency Medicine, and he was brand new to the job. He was a brilliant physician and a wonderful teacher. He taught me more about Emergency medicine than I thought I could ever know. He was a compassionate, giving, loving man who gave EVERY ounce of knowledge he possessed to EVERY patient he saw, in order to assure that they received the best care he could possible provide. He was greatly respected in that arena.

In those days he was writing The Sisterhood, and he would bring that work with him to peruse and perhaps "buff up" a bit during some of the few quiet moments we had during the night shift. He shared some of the book and some of his misgivings about parts of that book with me.When I finally read the book in its entirety, I remembered those shared remarks, and it made the book even more enjoyable. I loved that book and every book since!
He was never taken with himself, others always came first, and all of us heard a lot about Matthew and Daniel (Luke had not come along yet). His family was his greatest treasure and a great source of pride.
l happened to see him not too long ago at MGH, and though I had not seen him in a very long time, the minute we began to speak it was as if the years just melted away. He had such a genuineness about him that truly made him special.
He had many accomplishments in his life, but his loving caring, honest spirit made those accomplishments even more special.
I will truly miss this soft-hearted, gentle man with the fierce core that never gave up..on anything or anyone....
Rest, Michael.
My heartfelt sympathies to all of you.

Dear Family, I am so sorry for your (and our) loss. You may have heard stories from him about our wonderful trip together from Connecticut to San Diego (Marc Lappe's uncle's house) in a 1946 Dodge pickup "camper" in 1963. Very good memories for me. Again, my deep sympathy. Henry Lanford
November 03, 2013
Michael, You will be sorely missed. As a member of our family, we knew how much family meant to you. Rest in peace.
November 03, 2013
Dear Robin,
As I sat in church yesterday and reflected on Michael's life, an image flashed to my mind. It was of a painting I saw many, many years ago in a little chapel in Toledo, Spain: The Buriel of the Count of Orgaz. The count lies in his shining armor with many important, powerful people gazing down at his body. But his soul is flying up to the arms of God...and it is an infant. The purity of his spirit is represented by a babe. That's how I will always think of Michael. You are in my thoughts and prayers,
Linda Hemphill (Wednesday nights)

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Michael. Although I live in Toronto I knew Michael through his parents Milton and May Palmer who were so proud of him. I did communicate with Michael many times but only met him once. His extended family were also extremely proud of his accomplishments. I met Michael 3 1/2 years ago. I was impressed by his brilliance and dedication, but more so by his humility, sincerity and generosity. He embraced me and was kind to me. I now have a Michael Palmer-shaped hole in my heart.
November 02, 2013
To the entire Palmer family and Noelle and Robin,
It is with grew sorrow that we learned of Michael's passing. He was a dear friend, a great neighbor and a generous person. There was always a warmth and inclusiveness about Michael: the neighborhood children in his swimming pool, the music, the parties in his home, the discussions about his writing. He was a person who truly understood the moral and ethical mission of doctors and this was reflected in his work with medical students' education and in his work with physicians recovering from substance abuse. Most of all we shall remember Michael's commitment to his family and his devotion and passion for Luke.
Our deepest condolences,
Dolores and Frank Emspak

Dear Luke,
Please accept my most sincere condolences. I have learned much from your dad over the years, and whenever we 'bumped into each other' when we were out and about, we enjoyed catching up with the news in our families. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, and how much my heart and soul smile just thinking about Michael Palmer. From Debbie Leibowitz (Temple Beth El/Shirat Hayam Preschool).

I echo the words of sorrow expressed to the family and friends of Michael Palmer. News of his sudden and untimely death brought back memories of growing up together in Springfield and sharing a friendship through college. Clearly he touched the lives of many, and may those memories bring comfort at this time of grief.
November 02, 2013
Generous, gentle, loving, interesting and, if at all possible, totally devoted to so many different things. I will miss knowing that Michael is up on his hill busy enjoying life, always with that contagious smile. My love and sympathy to Michael's dear family and to all those who loved him.

Michael Palmer grew up in Springfield, MA as did my brother and I. He was a special friend to my brother, Jim Landis, and remained so. I heard Michael speak at The University of Hartford where the auditorium was packed with admirers of his writing. He remembered me from childhood and gave me a warm greeting at the end of his talk.

A warm, generous, and inspiring man is gone, and so many people will mourn his loss.

To the Palmed family
I am deeply saddened to hear of Michaels passing. He was mine and my sister's favorite author. I won my first Kindle on twitter from him! It came with a case and a personalized note, which I have laminated. My sister and I also have the the book plates he signed for us. Where do you find an author who does that? He also talked to me about Aspergers Syndrome. I will miss him and his books very much! Today is 'all souls day " where we pray for all the soul's who have passed. Special prayers for Michael today. Know that his soul is with God now. Find comfort in Gods plan.
Much love and sympathy,
Mary
