For the families and children of our fallen this Christmas 2013

Colours glowing near a window pain
Shimmer gentle, seen, the sight
Lifting hearts in yuletide's glow
On Christmas Eve, tonight
Let them hear the carols
Sung on high
Sung in hearts so light
Sung with all the love that grew
Sung with all their might
As they gather close
Around their Christmas tree
Recall a life time, shared
Broke into tears, for a life once shared
With a nation
With all of us
Oh Lord our child of Canada
Lost a soldier, Oh So Dear
To a world that needed
A strong, strong heart
To stand, to say, no more
In a world gone so terribly wrong
On behalf of me and you
They stood, they gave, all that they could
Left those they loved behind
We now cherish, the very thought
A thought that's so profound
Hearts have risen high above
As angle's wings do fly
Carrying forth their love so dear
We hold them near to us
Their wives, their children
Their moms, their dads
Their families, loved ones, friends
And those who walked at their sides
On behalf of all of us
As sunshine gathers, sparkles thought
In the snow that's on a tree
May the beauty of the gift they gave
Shine on for you and me
May the warmth of love surround their hearts
Quell the hurt, the pain the loss
May it bring your soldier, mom, or dad
Close to you tonight
May they wrap their loving arms so tight
Hold you close and oh so near
And let you know you're never alone
At this precious time of year
In life, in birth, a special child
Was born on Christmas morn
To bring to you that special chance
To be near to them once more

May the Joy of Christmas warm your hearts and lift your spirits high
Shine the glow that Christmas brings
Close to you tonight

We Will Remember Them. Written for Remembrance Day 2013

For those who've stood at the gates of hell
As battle rages forth
And stood to hold their line, their fate
To lift a new world rising forth
A world in which freedom's hand
Was openly held toward
To those to escape the bonds that bind
To hold them ever more
From the clutches, the beating down
Their spirit and their hearts
Those who held that outstretched hand
To those who needed help
So thankful all a world should be
For they stood for another voice
One that held our hearts, our minds
Standing very close
Freedom is not just a venture forth
It is a way of life
That lends us all, the gift to stand
Go forth for what is right
And allow all those to climb aboard
Who see it in their sight
Oh Lord you gave us choices
Good or evil found in hearts
The two, so very different hold
Our worlds so far apart
Tonight I looked into the coals
Of embers burning bright
And saw the life of those who share
Our nation's glowing light
At first their dreams are smoke and mirrors
Of a life that used to be
And then each soldier rises up
Gives meaning to where they've been
Learning pride, remembrance
From those who've stood before
Those who tossed the torch that holds
Their futures, evermore
So many didn't return back home
They lay where poppies grow
So many others caught their torch
And across our earth they've roamed
Within this new world
They have worked so hard
To help to come about
A world where sons, where daughters, rise
And share a brand new world's spark
Lord love them for they took a stand
And said no more, no more
A message needed
In our world today
As terror knocks on every door
We could never wander very far
From these hearts so warm that said
Our world needs us brave enough
To stand in terror's way
So as you sit around a campfire's light
Look in and see how bright
The glow that warmed those hearts to stand
As they stood for all of us
We can never forget that step they took
We remember those who gave
All they could towards a better world
A better world today

We Thank Them
We Will Remember Them
Strong of heart
Strong in spirit
Glowing heroes to recall each day

March 30, 2013
My poem, written for this Easter 2013, in respect of those who have given their very all to bring about a better world on our behalf and in recognition of their families, friends, loved ones and fellow soldiers who miss them so deeply at each Easter Sunday meal. May They R.I.P. We Will Remember Them.

Empty chairs each Easter Sunday
In homes across our land
Tears flowing gently
For each son or daughter
Mom or dad
Who gave a heart to Canada
Stood proud for me and you
Stepped forth to make a difference
In a world, in need, they knew
I've seen comets
I've seen meteors
But what I saw the other night
Was a glowing ball
Streak across the sky
In slow motion, in its flight
It glowed so bright, like mini moon
Its colour just the same
And then in the spirit with which it came
Turned to darkness once again
Overjoyed in what, I had seen
It was not a shooting star
It was a light that lifted high
In the brief moment of its spark
Oh lord, so many soldiers
So young and full of life
Have moved my heart
In this gentle way
As they've stood so far apart
Parted from their families
Parted from their friends
Stood so tall for who we are
Given all that could be given
Now held so close, within the hearts
Of those who miss them so
As bright, as seen, this palm Sunday's eve
Not unlike a story foretold
Of a son who gave his very all
So others would follow
Follow in a dream, a way
That a world would see a light
Of goodness spread across a world
At freedoms dawning sight
Oh Lord be near our soldier
Who also gave a life
For all to see a better world
On behalf of all of us
Lord, I dare not compare your son of life
To our warriors brave and true
I only give this humble voice
Of their efforts, the good, they do
Standing tall
Standing brave
Standing with all you shared
Within their hearts as young they were
To mold them
Brave for you

For the Families of Our Fallen This Christmas 2012

Angel's feathers falling
To remind us they're up there
Wind chimes sounding gently
To let us know the lord is near
Today is but a lull, in winter's nasty chill
One can see the storm clouds building
Circling, all around us now
We hold so close the warmth that was
To let it not escape
Yet no matter how hard we try
The warmth, it finds the gate
The chill it reaches down inside
Attaches to the spine
Sends shivers climbing through us now
Hearts are frozen held in time
For those who've lost a loved one, friend
Tis all they can endure
A hope, a wish, a prayer, t'would bring
Their loved one home again
Oh Lord their Soldier stood for all
Please warm these hearts so chilled
So they may find the warmth once shared
With this one no longer near
As they look out through the window
Let the moon and stars, shine bright
Let all about, it glisten forth
On this, this special night
Another hero gave his all
The one who led the way
For them to find a life beyond
And faith to find a day
A way to climb a staircase
To the heavens high above
To join a son, a daughter, friend
To be together once more as one
Oh lord you sent your son, our gift
To those who lend a heart
To those who've given all and more
For those life has forgot
We stand so near, so near Oh Lord
In praise, in solitude
Await a time, a time to share
A loved one entrusted unto you

Thank you Lord

For Remembrance Day 2012

Flurries of snow across our land
A chilly wind bites at the spine
As we stand for those who stood for all
In far off distant lands
Some recall the void, the pain within
Left in hearts, in minds, in lives
Who were impacted at the loss of those
Their lives never the same again
Friends recall fond memories
Child in tears for a mom or dad
A wife recalls the horror of war
That turned her life, a living hell
A mother or father stands in thought
A loss beyond belief
Of one who was their heart their soul
Since counting tiny toes upon their feet
Fellow soldiers, comrades
Loved ones, friends
In their minds they bring them near
In special thoughts of those they've lost
While fighting over there
We as Canadians
Stand proud, respect
All those who stood for all
Sent from a nation whose open heart
Has provided a world a home
Oh lord my heart so empty
As I stand, two minutes given
Just a moment's time
For the life they gave
On behalf of all of us
I cannot be prouder Canada
I could never turn away
From those who've shared
Their loved one forth
A debt we could not repay
Stand proud, Remember, Oh Canada
For those who stand for us
For their families, friends, and comrades too
For they gave for me and you
We are focused on the flower
Began in fields so far away
An image to be remembered now
On each Remembrance Day

Are forever in their debt

For the Families of Our Fallen, This Christmas 2011

The wind is howling at my doorstep
This eve of Christmas Eve
The trees are bending low its clear
As Christmas day draws near
As I decked the tree this Christmas
I thought of those so brave
Of those who've lost a loved one
Who stepped forth for me and gave
They gave their all for Canada
A gift beyond compare
They stood a world away in time
Where few would tread or dare
So many loved ones share in tears
In thoughts they've left behind
Hugs once held so warm and close
A smile within a mind
The TREE has become so special now
For it holds a life time past
Its sparkling lights a memory's glow
Of a hero once held so near
As garland wrapped the tree in smiles
Those smiles of yesteryears
Those smiles held upon as face
Forever now held near
Each piece of tinsel a frozen tear
Shed at a time of loss
And now reflecting the reason why
For this hero was dearly loved
A true angel tops this Christmas tree
For is seen when looking high
As a loved one lifts their faces near
And a prayer races from a heart
A wish that they were standing near
A wish for laughter's sound
A warmth a hug once use to bring
Remains a memory oh so close
Oh Canada, our heroes gave
Their loved ones hold our hearts
Lord please reach out and hold them close
Please be so near this season forth

To Those I Love and Those Who Loved Me
When I am gone, release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had many years.
I gave to you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
But now it’s time I travelled on alone.
So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust,
It’s only for a time that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on,
So, if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see me or touch me,
I’ll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear,
All my love around you; soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone
I’ll greet you with a smile and say,
“Welcome Home”

For the Families, loved ones, friends of or Fallen This Christmas 2010

Looking back, on childhood’s days
When wonder set the sails
And all imagined could come to life
Within thoughts, dreams as they played
When Santa rode a sleigh one eve
In every coming year
And magic taught sweet dreams to fly
To rooftops every where
Now sitting wishing Christmas Eve
Looking off into the night
Pleading for a shooting star
Enhance this wish with all their might
A wish for just a Christmas hug
From a soldier no longer here
No longer in our earthly world
Held close now, within near
The hearts of those who’ve felt such pain
At the loss of a hero’s life
A hero who stepped forth for all
Bring this hero close this night
As tears once more roll down a cheek
Another endless, sleepless night
Let our Lord brush close a warming hug
Of your loved one, bring them near
A gentle breeze, fond memories’ bring
To hold them ever dear

Wishing the magic of Christmas could bring the smiles, the hugs and the warmth of your loved one, into your home for Christmas. Ever in our hearts and always remembered. May our Lord bless you this Christmas and throughout the coming year.

Thinking of all those who have given so much; those who have paid the Ultimate Sacrifice, our Veterans, our serving soldiers, their families, loved ones and friends at this special time of Remembrance, 2010. We Do Remember.

They crawled on their bellies slowly
In the dirt, the dust, the slime,
Ran onto beaches, lived in fear, a moment out of time.
A time that changed a world in need
A time that set apart
Times that held a world so close, near and dear to every heart
The gas they sent, it took its toll
Many others held that ground
And challenged over and over again
Until freedom’s world was found
Liberated nations cheered delight
A world was aimed anew
But for so many who had lost a life
The tears fell hard and true
They stepped forth for their Nation
They stepped forth for a world to be
They stepped forth to chase the evil back
Keep their families safe and free
Through life times of years gone by
Up to this present day
A brethren strong with so much might
Stepped forth for you and me
We owe so much to those who’ve walked
In fear yet oh so strong
So brave in every step they took
So many now are gone
They have challenged life itself each day
And stood for what was right
They did it with their heart and soul
And stood with all their might
Lord love the souls of these so brave
And cherish duty’s call
For they gave all for a better world
On behalf of one and all.
At this time of Remembrance
Into our hearts we welcome those
Who have walked this solemn journey forth
For those who needed a friend along
We recall their families, loved ones, friends,
For so many have paid the price
Of freedom, or for a world in peace
Or to fight terror in another place
Oh Lord we hold their honour high
Our tears have washed the path
For those who take their torch to stand
As to them the torch is passed
Forever near we promise
We will honour these hearts so brave
And stand nearby their families, friends
For the sacrifice they gave

Dear Mike, even if I did not know you, not a day goes by without me thinking of you the day you left us. I remember taking care of you with your friend Rob by my side as we where getting ready to put you on the blackhawk helicopter to go to KAF. It was hard. To me you are a hero, a fellow soldier of arms and we will all miss you very much. I keep a picture on my wall of you at home to honor you. Rest in peace Mike, we think of you all the time. As I focus this Easter Sunday
My heart goes out to you
For a Chair is sitting empty
For a Hero Brave and True
Who gave a life for Canada
And a world we should become
A better world for all to share
A better world for everyone

They had raised their eyes in honour
To the Flag that flew above
They had sung its anthem strongly
In their hearts so full of love
It began for them in childhood
And sang out for years to come
At the vision of the Flag above
Onto which their hearts had clung
This special group, a brotherhood
That stepped forth to a country’s call
For them the Flag was calling
Could not turn away this love
For them it was the strongest call
The path that led the way
For they had held it steadfast near
Flying high above each day
And then one sad, so tragic day
The leaf flew from the sky
To wrap and hold them tightly bound
In return for all their love
It warmed their weary bodies
Clung closer to their hearts
And to hearts that shared the pain, their loss
At such a tremendous cost
Wrapped within the hug that flew above
Love’s vision, all their lives
Now carried forth in a country’s love
For their loving sacrifice

To the Families of Our Fallen. Thinking of you this Christmas

The tears that fall to a winter’s sky
A loved one looks off into the night
For Christmas Eve is a lonely time
When a loved one is not held tight
We know they would have been here
For their families, for their friends
If they had not given our world the gift
In their service to all mankind
They stepped forth to change a world so wrong
Lift a country from it’s past
To provide a future for those in need
A future to go forth and last
But someone stole this life so strong
The beauty of a thought
Of stepping forth, to stand protect
And the goodness it could have brought
Please fill this void, warm this broken heart
Who looks out upon this eve
Troubled in a thought, a loss
Of someone now so close to thee
Oh lord please place a gentle thought
A memory of a time
When joy would fill this household warm
And keep it there at Christmas time
Let this family know we care so much
They should not be alone
Please help our thoughts be passed along
To warm those within this home
For Christmas is a time to know
That the coming of this child
Provides for all across our earth
To be reunited with that smile
The one that used to hold a hand
Or hold us in a hug
The one for whom we shed these tears
On this cold and lonely night
Please hold them close on Christmas morn
Celebrate the birthday of this child
Who came to bring salvation forth
To reunite them in awhile

By Roger Borchert

We pray oh Lord you stand near this Christmas to warm, to hold these families tight and mend these hearts so torn. Wishing you all the best this Christmas and throughout the coming year.

Mike;
Know that we have gathered to honour you, speak of you, and to remember what a good friend you were.

You are always in our hearts and our thoughts.

We are proud to have known you and blessed to have you as a friend.

The black band with your name on it is never taken off. The letters imprinted on it have been worn away.

You have touched our lives.

Thank you for being. We salute you.

I received this email from a friend. I think it says everything....

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?

Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, 'No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

In Respect of our Military Families, Our Fallen, and Wounded on Remembrance Day

For what we take for granted
So many have died for
So many lives so vastly changed
At the dreadful cost of war
There is the good; there is the bad
A liberated nation cheers
Left in dread for those young souls lost
Devastated a world back home
Efforts to protect a peace
That no one thought was near
Laying lives upon the line
Visions at times so unclear
Lives touched by fear or lived in dread
Of wounded coming home
Of crosses lined in many rows
From a trip down a heroes road
I have been sitting on the bank
Of a river flowing by
Flowing heavy with the flood of tears
From their family’s eyes
For on this day of remembrance
Their thoughts, their dreams, their prayers
Are focused on a loved one lost
Leaving them in such despair
My heart it wants to reach out
Let them know I can’t forget
The gift they’ve laid for their fellow man
Tis the greatest gift to give
So humbled in a moment’s thought
So treasured was the step
That they took forth at their country’s call
Let it never be forgot
We measure freedom lightly now
For we’ve grown so familiar with
But if not for those who took this step
And gave this precious gift
Would we take it so very lightly
Would we have the chance to vent
About all that annoys and bothers us
Without retribution for what we’ve said
So thankful they stood so proudly for
All that we hold so dear
All that makes us Canada
For me it’s oh so clear
For some others they just don’t get it
They think so little of
What has been placed in front of them
At the cost of someone’s love
If I could send forth a message
Place it in a bottle, float it by
I’d provide a note of how much I care
For those whose tears are flowing by
If I could walk along this shore
Such a warming hug I’d give
To those who’ve lost a loved one
So we can live the way we live

A date I know will forever be burned into the souls of many

A wonderful man taken on this day, one year ago...where has the time gone?

We gathered today to honor and remember him, we gathered today to honor a woman...

This man would be proud of her, the strength she shows, the smile she shares, the laughter of what once was

Honored to know her, and blessed to have known you.

You will never be forgotten. You touched us all, and we raise a glass to you.

Rest easy, we will look after her for you.

Thinking of our Canadian Fallen Soldiers due to our efforts in Afghanistan. For them, their families, friends and fellow soldiers during this Easter Season: this Poem was written with the help of one of their Mothers. For her assistance and inspiration I am so very, very grateful.

We thank you Lord for being near
And for your gifts given unto us
We thank you too for sending forth
Your son’s so gentle touch
He provides our world with caring hearts
Without which we could not love
He gives strength to those who would step forth
In a world hidden but from above
They’ve stepped beneath terrors darkened clouds
Too many whisked away
We pray Oh Lord you gather them
Provide them a new day
Please take them close, near to thee
We entrust them to your care
Let them rest awhile hold them near
And set their spirits free
May they stand proud now
Among their peers
Families, friends, and loved ones too
For in the loving Grace of an angel’s touch
We’re drawn so much closer unto you

Thank you so very much for your efforts and sacrifice towards making our world a better place.

For the loved ones of Canada’s Fallen Heroes

May the New Year bring
A warmth to thee
That helps to heal the heart
That mends the fracture caused within
That’s torn you apart
May it whisper in your ear at night
That love is standing near
That you will never be alone
A warmth to quell your fear
May it welcome you in mornings’ light
And be near throughout the day
Standing near to comfort you
In a needed special way
May you always know
The time will come
Together you will be
Find in the tear a memory brings
The joy it helped you see

May the lord be near throughout the year, come and help in every day, that it takes for you to overcome this tragedy life did play.

For the families, loved ones, and friends of Canada’s fallen soldiers: It was written this evening with thoughts of what you and your families are going through at this season and could not hold it back any longer. It is my Christmas gift to you all.

I thank you for wandering near
As you think of where I lie
You think of what I went through
And a tear wells up inside

Let not that tear
Fall for me I’m sitting watching you
For I’m not there at all no more
I’m here inside of you

I’m sitting near within your thoughts
And in your memories
I’m just the thought a gentle breeze
In a gust of memory

I’m the gentle shiver when you are near
I’m the glimmer in your eye
I’m the sparkle that a teardrop brings
When it wells up in your eye

I’m the smile a fond moment brings
I’m the warmth you held so dear
Remember that, as time goes by
And know I’m standing near

As you look upon the Christmas tree
Shinning at this time of year
Know the Lord sent his only son
So that I could be standing near

May our Lord be near you all.

Our hearts and prayers go out to you all during this so difficult time of year. Please know that it comes complete with the glisten of tears held within the eyes of it’s, author Roger Borchert. Thank you so very much for the efforts of your loved one towards making our world a better place

I am left humbled by the selfless and endless dedication and commitment that I witnessed being exhibited by our Medical Technicians on Roto 5; a group to which Cpl Starker belonged. To me, these men and women are like guardian angels to our troops on the battlefield when they bring "aid to the soldier." In Respect and Remembrance of Our Fallen Warriors, their Mothers, Fathers, Wives, Children, Grandparents, Loved Ones, Friends, Fellow Troops, and all those Canadians whose hearts and tears lay at your side; I submit:

There are no words that I can place here in this registry that could ever justify or explain the loss of your loved one, friend, or fellow soldier. Please know that my family and I cannot stand idly by, without taking a moment, to express how much our hearts go out to you. There is no greater gift towards the future of our country, our world, our humanity, than the efforts and sacrifices made by our Canadian forces towards making our world a better place. Whatever the politics of the day, whatever the leadership of the moment, our selfless warriors have stepped forth to deploy to meet the needs of our changing world, with honour and an integrity that is unrivalled. We as Canadians truly bow and honour your efforts and sacrifice.

We have fallen on fields of battle
In lands so far from home
We have marched to war in honour
For those who’ve felt alone
We have defended those who couldn’t
And stood between the lines
Of two opposing armies
In this new world in our time
We have stood for those who cannot
For those who are oppressed
Standing shoulder to shoulder
To help others do their best
We have held our line with honour
Fury held at bay
Rebuilding a broken nation
To allow all to have a say
Our sons and daughters moms and dads
Stepped forth to make it so
A gift given for a better world
Such a precious gift you know
Our youth in pride have stepped forth
Do this job as best they can
Lay their life upon the line
Each true Canadians
They will not be forgotten
We can never turn away
They have taught the price of giving
In such an honoured way
For where would our world be then
If we just stood by and watched
Could we look ourselves in the eye
And say it wasn’t lost

Our tears. Our thanks. Our prayers.

Oh lord please hear
Our pain runs deep
At the loss of so many sons
Oh lord be near
To those who wait
The return of those so dear

Oh lord give strength
Help us endure
This foe we’re up against
Oh lord please guide
Our warrior lads
As they stand for those who can’t

Help us provide
A better life
In this your changing world
For those oppressed
And left behind
With no future to be unfurled

In doing so
Please stand near
Mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons
Who’ve lost a loved one
Stepping forth
Your comfort needed to overcome

Let the world know
We’ve stood near
To those who need a friend
For those who need
A helping hand
In a country on the mend

We do, so dearly, thank you all and your loved ones for your efforts towards making our world a better place.

Your sacrifice is a reminder to all Canadians of the brave men and women still serving in hostile areas around the world. May your family find peace at this difficult time. In our prayers...

One the most dedicated people to his field I have ever heard of. To work full time as an EMT, and then volunteer to go help out where is was needed, I was in awe when I read about it. As a Medic Trainee I have nothing but the highest respect for Michael. I only hope I can live up to the precedents set by amazing men and woman like him.

Although I did not ever meet him, I know the world is a lesser place without him.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much, Rest in Peace my Brother.

It's a terrible thing, but our thoughts are with you and your family. You were very brave and I'm sure that you'll leave an unfillable gap in your unit and among your friends.
June 07, 2008
Mike,

I know I waited until now to talk with you but, to be honest, I just can't believe you are not home safe. I continue to think about you and the wonder at how certain people touch out lives and the impact it has on us. For the first time I can agree on how people talk and remember someone lost in death, and how wonderful and sincere you are. Your wife and family have so much to be proud of as you are the genuine man all describe. I absolutely enjoyed working with you at both Cochrane EMS and Nakoda EMS. I learned much from you as both a Paramedic and most of all as the honest caring man you are. Few people affect me the way you did and will always will, hence the importance of the legacy we choose to leave behind because of our good and honourable life. I sincerely wish your family all the best. I am happy you are well loved and remembered. This is proof that you truly are a good man. Most sincerely, Debra (ps. I got me a Harley too...what a good ride!)

thank- you so very much

Thank you Sir. You and every soldier make us all proud.
June 02, 2008
As the moon rises up into the night sky your memory is posted in the stars. You were a great parmedic and I was told you were a great friend to those who knew you. You are leaving a huge hole in all those you left behind. Even though I never knew you I see the sadness in fellow workers who knew you and know you will be missed. My thoughts go out to your family and a thought crosses my mind that every time the moon moves into the night sky it is you looking down on all those you knew and protected and helped thought out your career.

My deepest sympathy at this time. It sounds like Mike was a wonderful guy and he will be greatly missed.
May 20, 2008
Dear Starker Family,

I am a 34 year old City worker. My common-law husband was an infantry member of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). I shared the same building as your son. Each day I walk past his picture. I clearly remember the day that picture was posted. I remember because I walked by and said thank you to the two men in that picture. I remember because the same feelings I had with my husband came flooding back. Feelings of pride, of strength, of fear, of love and of gratitude. I remember thinking how strong, brave and handsome they both looked. I remember feeling that I too should be standing with these men. That I too should be standing up for the right to freedom, safety, and health as these men were. Each and every day that I have walked into this building I have looked at that picture, with both a sense of awe and appreciation.

My words can not begin to touch the loss and pain your family is experiencing. However I wanted to take the time to tell you that you are thought of. That I pray for Michael's soul; and for the grieving hearts of your family. I wanted you to know that many of us, here at the City, in Calgary, in Canada and in war torn areas of the world bow our heads in thanks and tremendous grief for the loss of Michael's life. I wanted you to know how very much I appreciate what Michael stood for and that he stood for me and my family. I am so proud of the honour and strength the men and women, like Michael, exhibit in the constant threat of terror.

I don't believe a family ever truly heals when they lose a member in the line of duty. I believe this loss echos through the family, through our military family and into the civilian community. I know the loss of Michael will echo in our hearts forever.

Michael, thank you for your ultimate gift and sacrifice.
May 19, 2008
To the Starker Family,

My heart feels your pain and the sorrow you're going through. May your greif be only as long as you need it to be...and your strength give you the will to continue.

This is just something I wrote and now it seems as though it was written for the men and women who are not returning home.

I hope you enjoy it.

"THEY"

They stand up for us every day,
And we don't know their names.
To most they are just uniforms,
And they all look the same.

They stand on guard for country,
And defend the way we live.
These men and women chosen,
Called upon to give.

To those who know the sacrifices,
These soldiers face each day.
To us they are our heroes,
God protect them, this we pray.

They face the unknown enemy,
With bravery and pride.
They deal with situations,
Where most would run and hide.

Seeing things they wish they hadn't,
Their courage gets them thru.
These soldiers who stand up for us,
Doing the deeds they have to do.

To those who know the sacrifices,
The challenges, the pain.
We know some will be taken,
And not come home again.

Dear Mrs. Starker...Nicole and
Parents of Michael...The Starkers
and also Nicole's Parents and all
members of this grieving family....
My prayers, thoughts and condolences are forwarded to you in
this book to tell you how much I
learnt from hearing your Uncle
Priest's homily, Nicole. During his reflections about your
beloved spouse, whom you married in 2007....it was as though I came to know him and the many gifts he possessed and shared so generously with all with
whom he shared life and also with those to whom he ministered in health issues....He sounded like a very brave soldier and indeed he was...he gave his life
for the good of a nation....Jesus gave His life for us all....May that giving...that self-giving and supreme sacrifice of Michael's life become a very special blessing in your lives as you ponder how faithful and good Michael was. May he now be rejoicing in the heart of heaven. May joy, peace and
true freedom be his and may Our Faithful God grant him that Eternal Peace for which he gave his life........God bless and keep you all and His healing peace be yours too.
Sincerely in Christ...Sister Anne Rektor, SSND

I just got back from your funeral. It was beautiful and well executed. So many people showed up. There were stories to be told, and laughter to be had. We did you proud. At times I just sat, sat around the room and watched. Watched as the boys we haven't seen for years gathered together witout missing a beat. There were stories to be had, with booze to be drunk...we were strong, just like you would expect us to be. Every now and then someone would break down with the agonizing pain of reality. Wow, we will never see you smile again, never be the brunt of your sarcasim, never feel the heat you exuded from your presence...You are gone...Huge reality check! If I never hear those bagpipes again, it will be too soon. You were loved, loved by many, and now, you will be oue toast. Toast to the good times, and memories shared...Life is unpredictible, yet so cruel. How can one man who touched so many lives be summed up by a tap on the table and a cheers of the drink....But that is all we have left, is the memories and the protocol...You will be sadly missed, and respectfully honoured always. RIP

To the family of Cpl. Michael Starker, Our condolences to you all. We knew Michael for only a brief time more than a decade ago. One didn't have to speak with him for very long without coming to the quick realization he was truly a great guy. He really left a lasting impression. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.
May 17, 2008
You will never be forgotten. You have been an inspiration to me since the days of Nakiska and especially the day I was your patient. Your bravery, kindness, and selflessness are qualities that we should all strive to achieve. My deepest sympathies to the Starker Family in your time of loss

Deares Nicole and Family;

I or should I say we attended your funeral Mike. Wow! To see your life, flash before our eyes, an open door to who you were, was truly amazing.

As I looked around the hall, I could tell that you have touched the lives of everyone. From soldiers to policemen, bikers to civilians, you certainly left your mark on all of us.

I cried for you, I wept for your parents. I sobbed for Nicole, so full of grace, strength and humility.

Not only are you a hero, but I as an ex-military wife saw another hero within our midst. Nicole.

You would have been proud of her Mike. Her dignity, courage and strength helped all of us get through this terrible time.

I myself learned so much from that sweet Nicole. I am proud to have known you, but am equally as proud to say that Nicole is my friend.

To Gunter and Helen: Thank you for sharing your son with the world, but especially thank you for you. For it was you that created this fine man, he has the strength and dignity from you both.

To the McGonigall family: I had the priviledge of meeting Mike's 2nd parents. You are equally as special. Not only did you welcome and love Mike and Nicole, but he was one of your own. Thank you for taking care of him.

To all of Nicole and Mike's family: I sit here today, thinking of the past few days, and just need to say this. God has a special place for people like you. Without you, there would be no Mike. Without ever having known Mike, we would never had gotten the chance to know you.

God Bless.

Dear Starker Family,

I want to give you my sincerest condolences.

I supervised the majority of Mike’s exams through the Testing Centre for his EMT program; he was always a happy guy and always put a smile on my face during stressful times. It broke my heart when I heard the news. I no longer work at SAIT but it was people like Mike that make me reflect back at the good times during my position there.

I pray for the strength and healing for you and your family during this hard time. Remember that he will always be in your hearts as he looks down upon you from Heaven.

God bless you. May you take comfort in knowing how grateful we are for Michael Starker, your husband and son....our hero.
May 16, 2008
Corporal Starker was a true hero in every sense. His dedicated his life to helping and protecting others. As a City of Calgary paramedic, he routinely responded to dangerous situations to assist those in medical distress. As a soldier, he commited himself to helping protect those whose safety was threatened by an evil regime.
This noble commitment to mankind ultimately cost him his life. There should be some measure of comfort in knowing that his sacrifice was not in vain. Inspired by his leadership, valour and righteousness, others will carry on and complete the mission to which he was so devoted.
We will not forget Corporal Michael Starker.

TODAY
Today, let us not forget the fallen – they are the brave;
Today, mothers will hold their son’s and be glad that they can;
Fathers will sigh deeply, wondering if they could stand tall and strong if their son was taken from them;
Today, wives will hold their husband and look into their eyes and be thankful that they came home.

Let us not forget;
Today, a mother has lost her son – she cannot hold him again;
Today, a father who has lost his son, will try to stand strong for his family;
Today, a wife will say goodbye to her husband for the last time.

Today, we will remember this man’s sacrifice - his own life;
It will be something his whole family has to bear – they are the brave;
Something for every Canadian, man, woman or child to bear – let us learn from them;
Today, we need to appreciate our family, our city and our COUNTRY.
May 16, 2008
Thank you, Cpl. Starker, for your willingness to risk your own life to do the right thing. Thank you for believing in peace and helping those in need. Our world has lost one of the best; you will not be forgotten. God bless, and may time bring peace and comfort to those who loved you.

I am sorry for your loss and my thoughts have been with you this week. Nicole, we met years ago in Ontario, and I know the love you shared with Michael was truly a gift. Thank you Michael for you work and dedication.
May 16, 2008
I struggle to put my feelings of loosing Mike into words. I think it is because I am still in disbelief that we are now without this exceptional individual. Mike had the ability to make a positive impact on any one he came into contact with. No matter how brief the interaction, whether it was a patient or co-worker, Mike touched people's lives. I only had the privilege of working with Mike for one year, but I am a better person for knowing him. He was hilarious. He was a great medic. He was a true soldier. He will be greatly missed.
May 16, 2008
Today May 16th, 2008 is your funeral, and family and friends gather to pay their respects and support your family Cpl.Michael Starker. Many will line the streets of Calgary waving flags, saluting, or just being silent as you pass by.
Thank you for your sacrifice for our country. The Greatest Country in the whole world, and the greatest City. To the Starker family and Nicole and friends we will be saying an extra prayer of strength and comfort from God above. May you feel God's arms around you.
from one born and raised Calgarian to another. THANK YOU and may you rest in Gods arms.

My most sincere sympathies go to Mike's family and friends. I remember Mike from his time in the Airborne and know he will be missed by his collegues as well as his family. It is comforting to know he continued to do what he loved. God Bless him.
May 16, 2008
Nicole, although we can not be with you at this time know our thoughts and prayers are with you now and always. Mike was a great, selfless true hero to all. Michael, thank you for your sacrifice. It is true that God only takes the best.
May 16, 2008
Mike,

I know in my heart that all these messages are getting to you, just as much as they are getting to your family and friends.

You are my first friend to ever pass away, and as much as I learned from you in life, I now learn from you in death.

I will think of you often, and with time, I hope it will be with more smiles than tears as I celebrate your life and our friendship.

I will always treasure your snappy one-liners, your poker faced deliveries and the hearty laugh that soon followed.

I appreciated being your study buddy in school as you constantly challenged me to be the best I could and I thank you for that.

I appreciated the present you made me to celebrate my acceptance into Paramedic school, and still use it to this day.

And now, you will forever serve as a timeless and unwavering silent reminder, for me to appreciate all that I have, be grateful for my many blessings in life and never take life for granted. With that final gift to me and others, you will forever live on in our hearts.

For that, I thank you and honor you.

Annie

Nicole, Starker and Seguin families

I never met Mike personally but have shared many stories this week with Sgt. Miles of the 15 Fld Amb. He spoke fondly of their times together and how great an honour it was for him to have Mike in his troops. Your husband/son will be forever remembered as a man who sacrificed his life to give others theirs. It will be my honour to stand tall on Friday as Mike takes his last march with his fellow comrades.
May 15, 2008
Dear Nicole and family:
No heart can ever be prepared for such sorrow. I will remember Mike for his kindness and sense of humor when he brought Georgia to our kennel - I know he looked so forward to those special holidays with you. Please know I am keeping you close in thought.

Michael's passing has touched the entire EMS Community in so many ways, but what I feel the most is the reminder he sends us about our commitment to the people we serve everyday. Michael chose to leave the relative safety of his Paramedic position with the City of Calgary with the purest of intention, to bring aid to those much less fortunate than us. It is this commitment to the world family and its health that sets the tone for how we should all approach our work everday. I hope that I can continue his commitment to people as I move forward in my work as a Paramedic within my small part of the world. It is my hope that the family garners some measure of peace in the knowledge that he will be remembered by all of us in the EMS Community and the example he set will be emulated into the future.

With deepest Respect,

Mike, when ever you were attached to one of my patrols it was always comforting, because I knew I had someone that I could rely on completely no matter what the situation. You were a medic by trade but an infantryman at heart. You were always eager to help and never turned anyone away that needed help. It was a privilege to have known you and you will be deeply missed by all. My condolences to your wife Nicole and to the rest of your family.

Dearest Nicole and Michael's Family,
My son Jeff, was the Bar Owner who was murdered 4 years ago in Braeside. I saw your comment in the paper today about not ever wanting to say goodbye and I just wanted to tell you that from my experience you don't. The love and laughter that you shared lives on forever. I know that it may be hard for you to believe that right now but as the days go by you will see. You will never stop missing the hugs and physical closeness but you will have many special moments when you know that they're still so very near. These moments will sometimes make you laugh and often bring tears along with the smiles but they will be special times when you need them most to help you go on. You are a very strong women and I know you will learn to honor Michael with the way you live your life each day.
I will remember you in my prayers often and if you ever need to talk please come by.
God Bless all of you,

Our deepest condolences to the Starker family. We do not know Cpl. Starker, but we are proud of his Bravery and unselfish commitment to protecting us and same goes for all Canadian troops. May God be with you all at this difficult time.

"We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us treasured memories,
Your love is still our guide;
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again."

To The Starker Family:
I am so sorry someone who has dedicated his life to assisting the lives of others has lost his own. I am sure he does live on in the lives he has aided and the memories of others.

Do not stand by my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

Children dream about being a Super Hero. They dream about having Super Powers. However as adults we tend to stop beliving in Super Hero's. We think they are a work of fiction. However Super Hero's are real, and if you are lucky enough one will touch your life. At first glance Super Hero's look just like you and I. So how do you spot a Super Hero? Well Super Hero's have some key traites.
- Courage
- Bravery
- They think of others before themselves
-Some have Super Powers (Like the power to heal others & save lives)
- They give of themselves at every oppertunity.
Mike Starker had all these traites & more.He used these traites in both his Calgary EMS & Military careers.Mike Starker was a true Super Hero. And when my children are dreaming of Super Hero's I know they are thinking about men & women like Mike.
Thank You Mike.

Mike

Working with you in Kananaskis, I was honoured to know and work with you. You integrity will never be questioned, you honesty and humor will alway be missed, and your humble demeaner will never be forgotten. When I heard that you were heading to Afganistan, I became extremely uneasy, as it brought it truly home, knowing someone who was serving their country, and helping another country a world away. I will always remember how proud you became when talk of your experiences as a solider occured.

When I moved onto a new job, you keep reminding me to slow down, and enjoy life. You kept offering to help me with the welding project on my trailer, but we never could seem to get our schedules sorted out.

When I heard the news, it was devastating, my heart goes out to your wife, Nicole, your family and for your families with Ems and the Military.

I tell everyone who asked about you, everything that is said about you, is true, there is no greater person, with such intergrity, but yet so humble and down to year.

Mike, your goofy, trouble making grin, will never be forgotten. May all of us remember to say to those who are important in our lifes, how make we appreciate them.

Mike,

Thank you for everything, everyone is so proud of you, and horoured to spend time with you.

You served your country and community with pride and honour.

Mike, although I only knew you briefly, you personified a soldier's soldier. Even when I coined you at the men’s mess dinner 2007; your pleasant demeanor and professionalism was clearly evident. May 12, 2008
I would like to offer my sincerest condolonces to the Starker family for your loss. I immunize a lot of soldiers in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan and although I do not get to know these soldiers all that well, Cpl Starker stood out in my mind and I remember his visit to my office vividly. It was very evident to me what a professional soldier he was and his obvious devotion and anticipation toward his upcoming deployment was admirable. His determination to serve his country and help others was felt by so many people. As Cpl Starker left my office that day I couldn't help but think how lucky the CF was to have him. I thank him for his ultimate sacrifice.
May 12, 2008
Nicole, I am very sorry to hear this news. My deepest sympathy goes out to you. I only met you once; at Mark's wedding in Kelowna, but you made a lasting impression. We had a long conversation about cars.
That was also the last time I saw Mike but I felt we still had a bond even though we had not seen each other for quite a few years.
Mike and I went through reserve basic and battle school together 1989. I remenber when I met him, it was the fisrt day of basic. We had an instant connection becasue we both had the same sense of humour....we did alot of laughing. His optimism and professionalism even at that level were inpsipriring to me and made me try harder. We were both in the same group of friends for 2 or 3 years and eventually we drifted our seperate ways. We had some good times which I never forgot. I admired Mike's drive and focus...he always knew what he wanted and just went for it.
Mike was a model soldier and Canadian.
I am very proud to have known him.
He will not be forgatten.
May 12, 2008
Mike,
Working with you from May to January 07', was a great learning experience. You were always willing to take time to give advice or help out with from your vast knowledge bank. I deeply miss your passing, and sympathies to your family.
May 12, 2008
I met Mark last year during the predployment phase and as with anyone in the dismounted medic world, its a pretty small community, I got to know him a little bit. His friend Fabio and I had climbed some mountains many years ago and we always said one day it would be good to prove ourselves like our fathers and grandfathers had in the past. I didnt know then that the medics would take such a heavy price in this war but I am not suprised by their sense of fortitude and honour and dignity that each of these combat medics carry with them each day..... Years from now as more and more stories trickle down from the foothills of the Hindu Kush; the Canadian people will hear of the bravery of our great soldiers. The heros are the ones that serve the heros are the ones that answer the call and the true heros are the ones who pay the ultimate price for a cause that many dont seem to understand but to soldiers its easy...

As a mother of a soldier who has served in Afghanistan, I am saddened by the pain of your loss; as a Canadian, however, I am so proud of Michael's accomplishments, bravery, and service to his country. Please know that Canadians everywhere support you and share in your grief.
May 12, 2008
I had the best times in the some of the worst circumstances with Mike, in both 15 Fd and 1 Fd. He could make you laugh when you were cold and wet and tired. Sorry for your loss Nicole.
May 12, 2008
From Chantelle, myself and the boys, please take knowledge that our thoughts and prayers are with you all and those of your family and friends. We sit here stunned and saddened with out having ever met Michael.

He served his family, community and Country and others, who were blessed to have known him.

I have said before..... and it is of little consequence now, however..... it is true of Michael and others who chose to do what they do....

It is not how Michael died that makes him a hero... It is how he lived.

Soldiers, EMS personnel, Fire Fighters and Police officers thrive on the notion that we all make the world a better place.... just one person at a time... one call... one patrol.... one crisis at a time. The communities we serve are better for it. We do this for the greater good and not the praise. Now is my family's time to praise Michael and his family. God bless you in this sad time.

On behalf of my family and community........ Thank you Cpl Starker.

The world has lost a truly great man. Mike touched the lives and hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. From our years together in Oakridge Elementary school all the way through to High School at Henry Wise Wood, Mike's kindness and sense of humor were unsurpassed. When he joined the military at the end of Grade 12, we lost touch, but were surprised to meet as co-workers in 2005 at Calgary EMS. The most amazing thing about Mike is that he never changed. A heart of gold and a true hero. You will be forever missed my friend.

We wish to send our heartfelt condolences to Nicole. We know that nothing we can say or do can ease your pain. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers from this day forward.

As Canadians we to often we forget that we are at War and try not to think about it. People that serve in the Canadian Armed Forces don't hesitate to help others even if they are on the other side of the World and they all to well know their decision to help could cost them their lives.

I am very proud of all the Armed servises and my thoughts go out to Michaels family, while you have suffered a great loss never forget that he was doing what he believed in.

My deepest condolences to to Nicole, and also extended to Mike's parents.

Mikey, you were one of a kind - the type of person who could turn another jumpers morale up with your infectious laugh and crazy smile. I am honoured to say that I had the priviledge of serving with you in 2 CDO, my brother. Remember how excited you were when you decided to buy my harley off me when we came back from Somalia, and right away you were asking me, Pots, Mosie, and Shell all about riding and what we recommended you try with your "new" toy. You gave 110% consistently, no matter what you were doing, jumping, soldiering, and there's no doubt in this old jumper's mind, that you excelled in being a paramedic and as a husband as well.
Our patron saint, St. Michael, is now guiding you to the RV where Vaughn and Frank will link up with you.

Farewell my brother - Fair Winds and Soft Landings.

Nicole, Helen, Gunther, Caroline and Michael's nephews, neices, aunts and uncles.

I met Michael when he was a very curious three year old full of fun and mischief! He was a happy, wonderful child and he adored his sister Carolyn. I have a wonderful memory of him being very curious about how I was able to nurse my son, Steven (when he was born).

My heart breaks for all of you at this very difficult time and I wanted to let you know that I have thought of Michael over the years and imagined what a wonderful man he grew to be.

My heartfelt sympathy extends to each and every one of you.

To the family and friends of Cpl. Michael Starker:

I am so sorry to hear about your lost. It is hard to write these things when you know how that person is feeling. They say time heals all wounds. But when our wounds bleed everyday it’s hard to cover. Always think of the man he was, the things he said that made you smile and remember the forever lasting stories you carrying in your heart. All of these will help ease your pain. Mike is a HERO that we will always carry in our hearts. I never had the pleasure to meet Mike. But I think my late brother-in-law, Sgt. Vaughan Ingram (KIA August 03/06) probably knew him. He was also Airborne. I hope in time your pain will lessen and your heart heals.
May 10, 2008
You shared your friendship generously; led by example; knew when to laugh and when to step up; and had the uncommon sense to know the difference. We are better people today for having known you in Kananaskis.

Nicole, our hearts are aching for your loss. Mike's unforgettable smile would brighten every time he spoke of you. May you find comfort in knowing what a difference Mike made to all those fortunate enough to have walked in step with him, even for a short while, along his amazing journey through this life.

Rest easy Starker.

Mike I remember when you came to Canadian Airborne Regiment, 2 commando full of piss and vinegar, you where a young buck with lots of potential. You always had a great sense of humour no matter what the situation, your quick-wittedness combined with your sarcasm always made me smile. We shared many good times and hard times. I remember laughing when I saw you this fall, and realized that you where coming with us to Afghanistan, because unlike the rest of them who did not know you, I knew that you where and infantryman first and one hell of a medic second. I wish that I could say that I found comfort being there with you in the last hour. I find it harder that there was nothing that I could do for you my friend. As I wrote the words to read at your memorial it hit me the length of time we had been friends 16-17 years, time flashes by when you are having fun. I could not speak at your memorial that we had for you in the FOB. I found myself chocked with emotion. You are an amazing man, husband and soldier. What manner of men are these that wear the maroon beret, you were the best. Fair winds and soft-lands Mike. My condolences to your wife Nicole and your Parents.

To the Family of Cpl. Michael Starker:

I would like to offer my deepest condolences, on the loss of a truly great Canadian Hero. When I heard of Mike's passing in the Ghan, I remembered the words of a Fellow Paramedic, that the work of a paramedic was truly Gods work, as a Paramedic they were out helping people two by two, hepling the sick and injured, and for this hero to serve his country to ensure that the right and freedoms of the people half a world away shows the heart and strength of a great man.

Stand Down Soldier, You will not be forgotten.
May 10, 2008
Mike made the world a better place by helping those that needed it one person at a time. He left a positive impression with everyone he met. He had the courage to go help in a place where most of us would not dare to tread. Mike is a hero because of how he lived; he will always be remembered for that.
May 10, 2008
I worked with Mike while living in Red Deer, Alberta and although co-workers come and go, Mike left a lasting impression of being a sincere, caring and genuine great guy to spend time with. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones - Mike will be missed and remembered by many. Thank you Mike and to all those who have served our country with bravery and courage so that others may benefit.
May 10, 2008
My deepest condolenses to the Starker family. Mike was one of the very few combat medics that enabled us to patrol the areas we had to go. I would trust my life, and any of my soldiers lives in his hands. On 6 May 08, like every day in Afghanistan, he was a warrior until the end. He fought the enemy with everything he had, and gave both confidence and courage to our men. No words can describe how much he meant to us, and how brave he was amongst hundreds of enemy machine gun rounds impacting our postion. Mike did not go down without a fight, and his actions saved some of my soldiers lives. I am forever in his debt.

With Heartfelt Sympathy for your family and for your beloved co-workers who miss you with all their hearts; Sincerely, GPS

Untitled,

I can’t believe the news today, wondering what the hell went wrong
I feel sick to my stomach, as the anchors sing on

I think of the times you teased me, and locked me out of the hall
You would always let me back in, But after you’d make me call

It’s that time that I cherish, and everything you did
I will never forget you, Especially near Mt. Kidd

I am not very good at this, so please help me one more time
I can see how much you’re loved, its prevalent standing in this line

As you’re brought back to us, you come home to us by air
So we may pay respect to you, and move on from feeling despair

I can’t get passed this moment, wondering what it was all for
I still wait to hear your laughter, and lock me out the door.

There’s no time left to share, so a lesson we must get
Don’t waste the time you’re given, and let us never forget

Ride hard Mike
RIP

Sleep peacfully Mike.
They went with songs to the battle, there were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
There were staunch to the end against odds uncounted.
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them

I travelled through Afghanistan many years ago - long before the Soviet invasion. They are a good people and Michael was working to help the many who just want to live their lives against the violent few. There will be Afghanis who say prayers too for the loss of this fine young Canadian soldier who laid down his life for the love of others. I am so sorry for your loss.
May 09, 2008
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Thank you for standing up for what you believe in and for making our world a better place. You have made your country proud.
May 09, 2008
The members of Alberta Ambulance Association learned of Cpl. Michael Starker’s untimely death during their annual convention. It deeply affected and saddened each one of us.
As we observed a minute of silence in his honor we were conflicted with emotion; a deep sense of pride that one of our own had carried his profession into Afghanistan and deep regret that he had paid the ultimate price sacrificing his life for his country and others.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to Michael’s family and his extended military and EMS families in Calgary and across Alberta and Canada as well as those left to serve in Afghanistan.
Sincerely,
Alberta Ambulance Association
Members, Board of Directors and Staff

Mike there is quite a few times to remember! Camp Lejeune, N.C. we'd crawl out of our hootches, brush our teeth and say time for a dip of Copenhagen! Or after a meal it would be time for an after dinner mint, same flavor of course. There was the time you and I were bugging Ernie Parolin (you called him skipper and he called you little buddy) saying we would kick his ...... Than he grabbed my arm and started to punch you with my arm and of course you had that look on your face like what the .... And I was like sorry man but I'm feeling like Raggedy Ann here and can't do anything. When we did our Recce course in Pet in 93' we had a stacked det, with you making top candidate, Mannioni finsihing 2nd, me third, and OT 64 in 8th. There was some good times there buddy. Or when we started to laugh when that engineer started to fall asleep and you leaned over and said hey look the terminators battery is running out. I'll never forget our times together, only thing to say is PALS, enough said. I'll talk to you later buddy!
May 09, 2008

It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It's the Soldier, not the politicians that ensures our right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It's the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag.

Looking back, we would have held that last hug longer......

I send my deepest sympathies to Cpl. Michael Starker's family. This war has affected all of us as it is happening in our time. As it has happened to countless Canadians who's families have lost loved ones to war in the past, but it still hurts when it happens. These Albertans who give the last sacrifice for their country are the ones whom should be honored as "The Greatest Albertans", how much more can we say about Albertans like Cpl M. Starker whom have given the last measure of devotion for Alberta and their Country.
May 09, 2008
Mike, I and the rest of the lads of 15 Field Amb (including members of the surrounding military family) are taking the news of your passing extremely hard. We are going to do you proud, both in our continued service and at your ceremony in the coming week. We've been talking about you all week... remembering both your quiet competence and your amazing (albeit admittedly sarcastic) humour. We are the successors of your courage and honour. You've set the bar pretty high brother. You will NOT be forgotten. RIP.

Mike, today at 1140hrs I raised the Canadian Flag, the Health Service Flag and the Dental Flag to half mast at Camp Black Down in CFB Borden where you have trained. I will continue to do so until you are finally laid to rest. It has been three days since your transition from this world. I know you really believed in what you were doing because we spoke about this before you left Edmonton. The humility and kindness you possessed made it so easy to chat with you. You were considered approachable and thoughtful by many which perfectly fit your personality as a caregiver.
Thanks for the time you have spent on this earth, thanks for the encouragement to pursue EMT, thanks for your sacrifice in the name of peace. We will miss you. You had a great heart as a citizen soldier, and an excellent example for our society.
Take care, my brother, Rest Peacefully. The next phase from here you will be in the state of Immortality because of your actions and the life you lived when you departed.
The greatest love a person can give to humanity is the willingness to sacrifice himself for others. You have done your duties, so Rest now soldier, rest now!
Fab, I know how you are feeling. I love you too brother.
My prayer goes out to his wife, family and friends. May the great God provide comfort in this moment, the time of need. You will be comforted. God Bless.

C/10
AIRBORNE!

To the evenings in the TV room text messaging your EMS partner five feet away. You have done your country, family and especially your wife Nicole proud. Your memory will live on forever. Rest in peace my friend.

To Mike's wife Nicole & his family. I would like to express my deepest sympathies for the loss of such a wonderful man. I've only known Mike since last July when he came to 1 Fd Amb & knew instantly that I was so lucky to have him as a member of the KPRT UMS. He has been a wonderful mentor to all the other Medics, he was my right hand man & Mike truly cared about supporting the troops he worked with. I could go on for a long time about all his admirable characteristics, he was a proud Uncle, affectionately refered to by the UMS crew as "Uncle Mike", he was a loyal husband, he talked about his family & his dog. Mike was truly a dedicated and professional soldier and Medical Technician. He will be sadly missed and I feel honoured to have known Mike even for the short time that I have.
May 08, 2008

I would like to send my condolences to the family and friends of Cpl Michael Starker. He was a very honourable man who gave the ultimate sacrifice to others in need. His sacrifice will never be forgotten by the people he fought bravely for and he will never leave the hearts of the family and friends that meant the most to him.

I had met Mike on a course in Borden, Ontario a few years ago. I am honoured to have met such a great man.

I also have lost a loved one in Afghanistan. 08 April 07, my fiancé MCpl Christopher Stannix. To the family and friends of Cpl Starker, when Chris died it was the hardest time of my entire life. I found in my time of need, talking to others who have been in similar situations helped me and gave me strength. I would like to pass on any support I can to help you through this time. If you ever want anyone to talk to, please do not hesitate to contact me.

“It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.” Father O’Brien’s words are perhaps the truest words ever spoken on war. No sane person ever asks for war. However, it takes true heroes to defend freedom when wars occur.

Thank you for sharing your heroic son, husband, brother, relative, friend, co-worker with us – we are sharing your pain and loss, and our prayers are with you.

Dearest Nicole and Family,
With a heavy hurt please accept our deepest condolences. Mike was so loved by all who knew him.
Each time a man stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others by striking out injustice, he sends forth a ripple of hope combined with others. These ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightest walls of oppression. Few are willing to brave the battle, only those with the courage and moral conviction to change a world that yeilds painfully to change. His character and act of bravery will live on forever.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "To laugh often and love much...to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to give one's self...this is to have succeeded."

In respect of the loss of another Canadian Soldier
Cpl. Michael Starker May 6, 2008

Some walk our earth
In big bold steps
And invoke a presence of mind

A gift to share
With those in need
At such a desperate time

A pain cut deep
It snuffed the gift
To be enjoyed and shared around

For this young man
Upon stepping forth
Has sadly been struck down

Oh lord be near
Our warrior lad
Who set forth to lend a hand

Oh lord reach out
Please take him near
Help those so near him stand

Lord share your love
They need you near
Their pain soars high within

Please quell the hurt
And help them heal
For a life that could have been

From memories lane
Help recall the gift
That he set forth to give

And let us hold
His honor high
And let his spirit live

Cpl. Michael Starker, we knew you not, but our prayers reach out for you, your loved ones, friends, and fellow soldiers. We do, so dearly, thank you and your loved ones for your gift to help those in need.

Although words cannot erase the pain that you must feel with the loss of your son, please be aware that many Canadians –– from the crowded streets of Toronto to the rolling tundra of the Yukon –– are united in honouring a valiant soldier. He did not die in vain, but rather for the great cause which we all seek: peace. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your brave son.

"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
Winston Churchill said those words, and they were never more truly meant than for a man like Cpl. Mike Starker. Mike knew exactly why he was in Afghanistan, he cared deeply for people in trouble and for his fellow soldiers.

I am proud to say I had the priviledge of working with Mike when he first started with Calgary EMS, and found him to be one of the most upstanding, kind, cool, nice guys to work with. I greatly admired the fact that Mike had been a member of the Canadian Military for years, and then became a Paramedic, and still served in the Reserves. This was a man who gave his life to serving people and his country in many capacities. He will be missed, and it saddens me to no end to hear of his sacrifice. My sincere condolences to his wife Nicole.

Lest We Forget
May 06, 2008
Each and every day I am grateful not only to those serving overseas for our country but to the families who are left here, to worry, to grieve and to make it through as best they can. Today, I think the pain that we all feel for Mike, for his family, for the co-workers of both Mike and his wife feel along with the pain, the pride that he did what he felt he had to do, and did it with all his heart. I'm sure that he will be remembered long from now for the caring ways he shared and the loving people who's hearts he touched everywhere.
May 06, 2008

Canada has lost another person who excemplified the deep Canadian spirit of service. Both to his country as a reservist volunteering overseas but even more so as a medic dedicated to the sanctity of life. His true selflessness in putting his life on the line for his beliefs will enshrine his memory in the hearts of all who serve or have as another hero lost. May God be with all who knew him and comfort them in the knowledge he will never go unforgotten for the life he gave.
