I am so saddened to find out that Neil Dougherty had passed away. He was a truly awesome man, who loved the game. I will always remember the times when he worked with the Kansas Special Olympics when they would scrimmage with the athletes. I have a great picture of him and my daughter that will always be cherished. A great man that died way before his time.
I was so saddened to hear of Neil's passing. Sorry my head has been under a rock and I just found out. I coached at Vandy a year during Neils stint there. I thought so much of him as a person... Always upbeat, Always sooo...personable. Kelly as great and awesome as it was to see you at your tournament and catch up, it was worlds more disheartening to hear about your brothers passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all of his love ones.
In remembrance of one year of your passing. It's hard to believe it's been a year already. Your memory lives on!
To Neil's immediate family, parents and extended family,
I know that this is a very overdue entry. For that, I am sorry. I am also sorry that I missed his services. I was, as I am sure everybody was, dumbstruck with disbelief--paralyzed in sadness. Know that I hold in my heart and mind, memories of Neil as that young bright eyed little boy to the handsome, talented, loyal man of integrity that he grew to be. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that I and my whole family loved him. God bless you and stay strong. A star has certainly gone out up there....but no doubt there is a new Angel.
Neil and I grew up in Leavenworth... You knew he had that something special when he was very young. That spark, that look, that zest in his eyes. He made all of us very proud. I am in shock hearing of his passing... Our prayers and lifting up go out to his family and friends. Yet another angel on high to watch over us...

I did not know Neil at all, but I have just read the media coverage surrounding his death and when I saw his age, I was stunned into silence. I am sincerely saddened and at age 50 myself, it also makes me think of my own mortality. My deepest sympathy to his wife and children. Head African-American Division I college coaches at major schools are rare and he was a tremendous asset to the game and community I am sure. He will be truly missed - even from those of us watching from afar. RIP Neil (1961-2011).

Met Neil back in high school and saw him again for the first time in 30 years at our reunion last year. We had a bunch of fun at the golf tournament and I enjoyed chatting with him about his life. Neil was one of the good guys and he will be deeply missed.
My condolences to the Dougherty family. Neil was a very good man who was an exceptional giver of his talent and time. My last conversation with him centered not on his own many accomplishments but those of his children and grandchild. I will always be very proud of him. Well done Neil...Well done!
I was shocked, and saddened to learn of Neil's death. For approximately 17 years, Neil and I competed against each other as both assistant and head coaches. Neil was a tough competitor, and yet, won and lost with class. His teams indeed, were a reflection of him. I dare say, the coaching profession at the collegiate level is in dire need of "Neil Dougherty's."
May God BLESS THIS FAMILY. so sorry for your lost.the Mells family.Ac played for coach d at Tcu

Richard & Cheryl Martin
A fine man, coach, and teacher. Perfect integrity. Class through and through. I still remember the phone call when he called to advise that my son could walk on at Kansas and then advised if it were his son, he would send him to the college that provided a full scholarship. Neil did what was best for each student-athlete.
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
"God Bless the Dougherty Family.
My the God of all comfort, be a mighty comfort to you all during this solemn moment. Our prayers be with you Patti and the entire Dougherty family.

My condolence to the family .....
My heart goes out to the Dougherty family. I'm so sorry for your lose. Losing a loved one in death is not easy. I hope that you can find comfort in John 25:8.
Patti, Our family is heart sick to hear of the sudden passing of Neil. As neighbors it was easy to see that he was a great husband, father and TCU coach. We will always remember him for his kindness the summer our families moved into the neighborhood and our boys became friends. One day that sticks in my mind is a long hot Sunday he spent coaching the boys 3 on 3 basketball team to a championship victory. He was so patient in between games talking to the boys giving them advice, working with them on their hand skills and just being a proud dad to Ryan. He also gave his time to many that day who just wanted to stop by and meet him and be a part of his magical energy. Our son looked up to him and what a great role model he was! Thank you for sharing your husband with so many as he has touched the hearts and lives of many.
Patti and Family

To Patti and the kids, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I fondly remember my last time running into Coach D on the recruiting trail at a Jerry Mullens event in Dallas, TX a few years back. It had been a while since I had seen him--and a long time since my playing days at Vanderbilt. But Coach D gave me a classic greeting: his warm, big smile, a big hug and a "What's up B!" He had not forgotten me yet.
Coach D was the first VU coach I remember seeing at my summer games. I will always cherish having him as one of my coaches. I have great memories.
Please know that I am lifting your family up in my prayers.
To the family of Neil Dougherty -- I send my sympathy and love to you. I remember Mr. Dougherty so well when I was principal of Midway Elementary School.
