Deepest Sympathy, Robin

The death of the Lord St John of Fawsley deprives parliament of one of her most devoted and exceptional members. His death also deprives his family and friends of a warm and refreshingly idiosyncratic presence. It was a privilege to have known him, and to have been taken under his wing, for he was not only a remarkable public figure, but an individual capable of supreme generosity and kindness.

One of the great English eccentrics, his appearances on English TV in the 1980s always gave me a great laugh but provided food thought with his wisdom.

My sympathies to his family and friends. I remember the news reports and my family in York talking about him. They and I were great fans. RIP.

During a meeting I had with him in 1985 he jumped up unexpectedly saying he had to give a talk to some American businessmen. As he bundled me into the back of a waiting car he told me it was about the new conservatism. I didn't know there was one I said naively. It's the same as the old dear boy, he replied dryly , but they won't know it. On the way to the lunch, he stopped by a barber shop and had what he called a four minute haircut. A one off and will be much missed. Have fun out there Norman.
