September 10, 2007
To the Family of Paul J. Cahill:

My wife, Barbara, joins me, admittedly a little late due to medical tests, but our condolences are nonetheless as sincere. I had the pleasure of working with Paul's father, Pat, at District 4 for several years. Pat was an honorable and dedicated police officer and as the apple does not fall far from the tree, so was Paul an equally dedicated firefighter who made the supreme sacrifice. Our prayers go to all his family that God will give them the strength to get through this terrivle ordeal. May God Bless all of you. Our love and prayers,
September 10, 2007
Thank you Firefighter Cahill for the service you have done. May God continue to comfort the Cahill family and know we are thankful for the work you did everyday.

To the Cahill Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The tribute given to Paul continues to honor his life. Please know that his sacrifice will be remembered forever in our family as there are over fourteen firefighters in our family that belong to Paul's brotherhood. May the love and the dedication that he had for you and his job give you pride and comfort to your lives forever. God bless you all.
September 08, 2007

September 07, 2007
My heart goes out to the Cahill and Payne families. No one like one's dad. You will never forget him.
May their souls rest in peace.Next time you meet a firefighter, give him a hug. He deserves many.
September 07, 2007
To the Cahill family, friends and brother firefighters:

Although I know none of you, as the grandson of a retired firefighter and son and brother of current firefighters in New Bedford, MA, Paul’s heroism and ultimate sacrifice hit close to home, as every firefighter family lives with the fear that is now your grief and mourning. Although words can not alleviate the pain you now feel, the words of the mayor of the City of Worcester after the tragic loss of the six Worcester firefighters in December 1999 stuck with me all these years. Addressing the families, friends and fellow firefighters of the fallen Worcester firefighters, he told them that their sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, and friends would always be with them, much like Paul will always be with you. Although you may not be able to see him the way you used to, he has not left you and will never abandon you. All you have to do is open your heart and listen and he will be there to guide you every step of the way. For those looking for a hero, you don’t have to look very far. A hero is a firefighter who runs into a burning building, never thinking of himself.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Paul and all his brother firefighters are true heroes.
September 07, 2007
To Shauna, Adam, and Brendan,

I repeat what I just wrote to the sons of Mr. Payne. Your Dad makes me want to be a better person. I hope the pride you must feel for your incredible father helps in some small way to ease the pain of your loss. He is a hero not just to Boston but to mankind. Sending love and warmth to your entire family during this difficult time. I will never forget his bravery and his sacrifice, and I will be forever grateful.
September 07, 2007

September 07, 2007
paul cahill was my cousin on my fathers side, he was older than me, so i did'nt know him very well, but i did grow up with his sister jean, we went to high school together. i was also close to his brothers jim and patrick, we all summered together in marshfield mass. yesterday was the most amazing tribute that i have ever witnessed, such an outpouring of love and respect for an amazing man. i just wanted to say, i was honored to be a part of his family and to thank all the firefighters that participated in his memorial.

To the Payne family - I don't know either firefighter or their families but the loss is felt by everyone. My sincere condolences and prayers of comfort to everyone. May God embrace and comfort all of you in this tragic time. I am most impressed by the bond that all firefighters from all over share and what an impression it leaves when they all come together at times like these. May He protect all firefighters everywhere for their unconditional bravery that they show every day for all of us. God bless. I am so glad Cardinal Sean was there to pray with all of you. He is a wonderful man.

September 07, 2007
Dear Pat & Family,
This missive is written with a heavy heart, my deepest condolences to all of the Cahill’s and their families in your time of distress. The outpouring of support shows how much Paul meant to you and I am sure, so many whose lives he touched as a fun loving individual. I have felt the loss of someone near and dear, so my heart goes out to you all with profound grief. I am sure you will all carry his legacy as a son, brother, nephew, friend and as a consummate public servant in your heart as you go through the healing process.

Many individuals in life squander the calling to follow their dreams and live an entire life regretting their lack of decision. Pat, your brother Paul followed his dream, although short he will continue his sojourn in eternal life as a Soldier with the Lord. Here on earth he took up the call that from all that I have read about your family has been best described in the immortal words of John F. Kennedy “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. One of the noblest professions in public service is to serve one’s country as a soldier and community as Paul did as a firefighter.

Sorry, I missed you by a few minutes at Florian Hall last evening. Please accept this note with all the prayers and blessings from my family to yours. As your colleague here at the MBTA, if I can be of any assistance in your time of need please don't hesitate to call.
Sympathy & Regrets

Anne,
It was so sad to see that the Anne and Paul Cahill on the news was actually the Anne we know from so many years ago when we worked together at Colpitts World Travel in Dedham. I didn't realize Paul was from Dedham and from such a big family. My family went to Dedham High as well so I am sure we crossed paths. My heart goes out to you and your children. I hope that the many wonderful memories you must have of Paul will help you through this difficult time. Take care.

September 07, 2007
My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone of you. As the daughter of a retired firefighter and the niece and cousin of others it was a thought we all lived with but it never consumed us. I am sorry it has to consume you. Stay strong and remember Paul is a hero to us all.

Fallen Jakes

Numerous messages to God since Wednesday…
Bless our brothers, the fallen Jakes
It seems there’s never rhyme nor reason
For whom He decides to take

Again we’re forced to struggle with the fact
That He’s taken two of our bravest
If we could, we brothers, march to heaven
From Him their souls we’d outwrest

But such is the fate of the dedicated Jake
Much, much too often
Though they died doing the job they loved
This blow cannot be softened

It crushes their families, kills their dreams
Of happy times together
They must go on, remembering their souls
Will live with them forever

We fellow firefighters in the “brotherhood”
Have lost two of our own
Like countless of our brothers before them
It still cuts to the bone

And lest we forget their brothers in arms
Who fought by their side
Some of whom still lay in hospital beds
Lucky to have not died

Our hearts may go out to all of the above
For they all suffer today
They’ll pick up the pieces the best they can
Each in their own way

But our prayers are for the eternal souls
Of two true Boston heroes
Who did their jobs until the very end
Earning them their haloes

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cahill family at the tragic loss of Paul. Although I did not know Paul, I knew his Dad Pat when I worked with him in the DA's Office. I can tell by the tributes here that Paul was the same kind, loving, caring, funny man. My son is a firefighter and my husband and Dad are both retired firefighters. God Bless you all and may your memories of Paul help you through these sad days.

I live very close to the fire department and Paul J. Cahill was among a few of the first responders during a cardiac incident I was having. They were giving me oxygen until the EMT's and Paramedics arrived. His face really stayed in my memory, like a perfect picture and then when I saw that he died in the fire I felt sad. I felt sad that someone who aided in saving me was now passed. I panic when my heart beats too fast but seeing his face on TV and in the news really made me wish I took a moment just to say "thank you".
Having lost a very close relative recently, my sincerest condolences to his family.

Serving in the Army for the past 22 years, I fully understand meaning of "Brotherhood" and mourn the loss of a fellow member, whether they're military, police or firemen.

Getting an e-mail and reading the internet story today that it's one of my cousins, that hits home a little harder.

My deepest condolences go out to the Cahill family along with the rest of his extended family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

To the Cahill Family: I am very sorry for your loss of Paul Cahill. Paul J Cahill was truly a hero who put himself in harm's way to protect us. May God's compassion and support hold you close during and after this time.
September 05, 2007
Regretfully I could not attend the public viewing today, but if I had, I would have told you that I was having dinner across the street on that horrific night and when we learned that there were likely two fatalities, two of us quietly prayed Hail Mary's. I hope you take comfort in knowing that in Paul's time of need, prayers were being said on his behalf. God bless you.
September 05, 2007
Dear Cahill Family,
Although more than a generation of firefighters has passed since my dad's retirement from the BFD, I feel for you. My dad, Chief Mike Laurano was Division A's deputy chief in the late 70's and early 80's. He loved his work and always instilled in us the serious nature of his job. To this day, a trip past Ladder 24 on Cambridge Street, Boston stirs alot of emotion and pride in me.

We always lived with the fear of your worst nightmare, and I cannot even imagine any words for your inconsolable sorrow.
May God give you the strength to get through these unspeakable and sad times. When I heard of Paul's untimely death, it brought to mind my dad's sadness when he lost his brothers in the line of duty.
God Bless you and keep you. You are in my prayers.
Respectfully,
Karyn Laurano-Vadala

We became friends as IBEW apprentices. We worked together and ran together. We'd sit for hours and talk...about our families, our lives, and our directions. Our directions changed, but every now and then we'd run into each other and you would give me that Paul Cahill look and say, "How you doin'?" and we'd talk just like old times. I won't forget you. Rest in peace My Friend.

We are shocked and saddened by the loss of FF Paul Cahill, another brave and selfless firefighter and father of Brendan who we know is a good man as reflected in the eyes of Simone, who is our adored cousin. Although I have never met the members of the Cahill family I shed a tear for their loss and the loss of a Hero. Our hearts are still broken from 9/11 and we feel more pain with the passing of another firefighter as we humbly respect the magnitude of the sacrifice made. Working at the credit union I pretty much have met all of the Boston Fire Department, but I do not know them all well. Paul was different. He always had a smile on his face and he just made you feel good when he was around. He will be missed, I will never forget him and I will keep your family in my prayers.

On behalf of the residents of West Roxbury's Highland neighborhood, I want to express our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Firefighter Cahill.West Roxbury has been a safe neighborhood because of men and women like Mr. Cahill who risk their lives every day to save ours. While large fires receive the headlines, it is little acts of kindness done every day, like responding to the elderly who have fallen or children who want to tour the fire trucks, which make these firefighters such valued members of our community.
Our thanks and prayers are with you.

It is a sad day in the labor movement to have lost a member of our family and a good friend. Paul was a great member of Local 103. He always brought a smile to the faces of his co-workers, especially in his early days of construction on the Copley Place Project. It was here Paul made many lasting friendships that continued in his days with the Boston Fire Department. My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul and Warren's family.

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.
My thoughts and prayers are with you

My deepest condolences for your loss. My great uncle Joe Saniuk was killed in the Vendome Hotel Fire in 1972 along with eight other brave men. Although I was not even born yet (1975) as soon as I was old enough I learned about the hero my great uncle was and I was filled with exhilarating proudness the day the city of Boston remembered the nine and erected the vendome memorial. I only hope that any comfort I may give during this time is that Paul and all the other jakes are together in heaven watching over us. God bless.

I am very proud to say that I am a part of Paul Cahill's family. I already knew that Paul was one of the nicest people I ever met. I had also suspected, but now know, that he is one of the bravest as well. Paul passed from this earth in the performance of a dangerous job that he performed with distinction. He often made light of the dangers that he and his fellow firefighters faced every day and this was his way of protecting his family from the true nature of his work. His legacy as a father, son, husband, brother, brother-in-law and firefighter will outlive all of us. Rest in peace, my friend. You are a hero in the truest sense of the word. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

The Heart Behind The Hero

I provide a faceless, nameless service to a community that rarely knows how much they need me.

If I am called from a sound sleep to sacrifice my life, attempting to save the life and property of someone I do not know . . . . .I will do so without regret.

God bless you.

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.

To the Cahill family,

I would like to express my deepest sympathies to your family, because I can remember when the fire department came to my house to help save my mother's life when she was in a diabetic coma and they helped carry her out the awaiting ambulance. There was another time when the fire department came to save another member of my family who is now a father of 5. I just want you to know that maybe it was Paul who could have been one of the many fire fighters who came into my family's life and I just want you to know that I appreciate what they do and they deserve the most highest praise above all.

As a child I had a horific nightmare involving a fire. Since then I've always had a fear of dying by fire. I am humbled that Paul was willing to face the beast for my sake over the past 25 years. If that is not the definition of a hero I don't know what is.

My prayer is that God will give Paul's family and friends the same courage and strength to carry on without him.

August 30, 2007
The Cahill family received the call last night that every firefighter’s family prays they will never receive. Our thoughts, prayers and gratitude go out to Paul's family, friends and colleagues on the BFD.
Firefighter’s are a rare breed that are willing to face the most dangerous conditions every time the apparatus exits the doors of the firehouse. They share a camaraderie that others cannot even imagine among siblings never mind among co-workers. Firefighter’s love the job they do or they wouldn’t be able to do it.
As a resident of the City of Boston, I am grateful that a man like Paul was willing to answer the call whenever help was needed and I thank his family for allowing him to do a job that he loved. May God bless you always.

To the family & friends of Paul J. Cahill,
When somebody dies, a cloud turns into an angel and flies up to tell God to put another flower
on a pillow. A bird gives the message back to the world &sings a silent prayer that makes the rain cryPeople disappear, but they never really go away.
The spirits up there put the sun to bed, wake upthe grass, and spin the earth in dizzy circles.
Sometimes you can see them dancing in a cloudduring the daytime when they're supposed to besleeping.
They paint the rainbows and also the sunsets andmake waves splash and tug at the tide. They toss
shooting stars and listen to wishes. And whenthey sing windsongs, they whisper to us,
"Don't miss me too much. The view is nice, andI'm doing just fine."
