Well, POND family,Ive only met Jeannie, but, I feel as though, Ive met you all. "Rep"Pond and I used to swap family stories, without even knowing it sometimes.Even as my employer (so to speak), we were also friends.I use to fuss at her about leaving her purse out in the open in our busy little office!!! I could on and on,,vacation to relax pain-free! Gone in the flesh,,,but so very much HERE,in SPIRIT!! She will forever remain ALIVE in my heart..We will all miss her, but, happy to know that she is where we all hope to be... there in HEAVEN!!!! Be strong POND family as you are NOT alone in your loss of her..we all lost her...but we all benefit from the gifts she left us...how to love, be loved, and enjoy life!!! w/luv,

Mrs Pond will be greatly missed by several faucets of the community.....The Political community and the education community....She was my daughters Kindergarten teacher and helped me with her in so many ways after she graduated kindergarten...and for that she will always hold a special place in my heart...I went to her later in the school years of both of my children and she was always willing to help with issues....a great woman was lost, but a greater angel she is now!!! Thank you for a dear woman like Mrs Pond!!!

Grace, kindness, compassion, courage of her convictions all come to mind when remembering Phyllis. She truly had the interests of others above herself. I always appreciated her candor, good humor, and willingness to share her time. I always remember her fondly. Rep. Pond made Indiana and her world a better place. She serves as a shining example for all of us. She will be missed.

I remember her as my kindergarden teacher at New Haven. Tom Masel 52 years old now.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all right now. I smile with sadness right now because of all the fun and fond memories. She was my teacher, my Girl Scout leader and, later in life, my friend. She used to let our whole troop have sleepovers at her house...and I'm sure terrorize the entire family. She was always smiling and laughing. When one of us ran the sled into a barbed wire fence, she "patched" her up and continued with the s'mores! Later in life, I turned to her with a problem and she was there for me. So share your stories and smile often. She is special.

Kindergarten Teacher

Parents told Phyllis the worst problem was keeping sick childern at home to recuperate. They didn't want to miss a single day of school because they would miss what would happen in Mrs. Pond' s class that day.

After serveral requests to visit her kindergarten class, I took my son to visit to learn what to expect when he started school. In class the little girls were given hammers, nails, screw drivers, screws and small wooden boards. I cringed at the thought some little girl might hit her finger. Phyllis said don't worry, she will only do it once. The little boys were a different story as the little boys took turns hitting the keys on old manual typewriters.

Phyllis The Mechanic

When her three childern were driving old used cars, Phyllis took night courses on many things on caring and upkeep of a car. She liked it so much she took the course more than once learning to save money in many different ways. She often chided me for not changing my own oil..etc. Her car trunk was full of emergency items for cars and people. Many times when she saw a motorist with car trouble she would stop along the highway to fix the problem.

I was on the phone at a rest stop on I-69 when my car wouldn't start I called for tow assistance to rescue me and my disabled car. Phyllis came out of the restroom at the rest stop, went with me out to my car, opened her trunk of tools, fixed my car and I called the tow driver saying nevermind the car was fixed. He said no one had ever called back that they didn't need him.

Blood Donor - 130 Pints

Phyllis definitely was a blood donor for many many years. As soon as she was eligible, she would drive to another city to visit the bloodmobile. Until her recent illness, she had given over 130 pints of blood.

The Mustard War

Phyllis accompanied my elderly mother, Ida Collins to Fort Lauderdale for a visit. When she put something in her suitcase at the last minute before leaving, she was surprised to find a jar of mustard my ornery brother had hidden there for a joke. The next time she was in Fort Lauderdale she left a medium size jar of mustard in the front porch from the Mustard Phantom.

Brother Bill called me a year later when airplane sales were low. He needed me to find the exact location of a flower bed at Phyllis's house in New Haven and call him back with measurements. When I knew that Phyllis and George were gone, cousin Luella and I went to visit their neighbors with shovel in the trunk. We dug a large hole in her flower bed and planted what brother Bill had requested: a 1 gallon container of mustard in plastic wrap and a large sign that said "Gotcha!"

Bill had alread made up NASA stationary with a letter notifying Mr. and Mrs. Pond that a large piece of foreign object appeared to be on their front lawn. Approximately 15ft west of the driveway and 30ft south of their mailbox.

Phyllis told me later, after getting the letter, she went out and dug it up, while George watched from the window afraid something would blow up.

Renters

Phyllis enjoyed renting her farm home. She especially was glad to help struggling families. Years ago, one family moved in the middle of the night after several months of non payment. When she finally found out where they were living, in December, she asked me to go with her to see them. Little children were playing outside and were so happy to see Phyllis. She asked them to get their Daddy to come out to the car. He came out, looking scared to death and white as a sheet. Phyllis said, "I know when you moved, you were behind on rent and without deposit money returned. I want you to know Christmas will soon be here and I want to make sure your little children have a nice Christmas". With that, she handed the renter cash and told to them all to have a Merry Christmas.

God is gracious. Mom was suffering these last few weeks. Pulmonary fibrosis is a wicked disease. Pinch your nose and breath through a straw while doing you normal things and you will feel like you are drowning. My mother was and amazing woman, but the greatest gift she gave us thre kids was faith in the knowledge of Jesus Christ as our Saviour. I will miss her every day of my life, but stand firm in the knowledge that she is able to breathe and pain free. I know that we shall see each other again in His Glory. I am her daughter now and forever.

Dear Pond Family,

Since learning of Phyllis' passing I have been flooded with memories of her many achievements. Hundreds of students had an exceptional start in their education as a result of her innovative teaching and winning presence. My dad would often come home from school and tell of the interesting things that were happening in her classes. My sister-in-law, nephews, and niece all count themselves fortunate to have been her students. Her tireless work in the Legislature will benefit Hoosiers for years to come.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you during this time of transition.

Fond regards,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Mr. Pond,
What a great example of marriage Phyllis and you have given to all of us. You allowed Phyllis to spread her wings and work on what she felt was important to our community and state. Phyllis continued to focus on our children's education so that they would be able to succeed in life. She showed great strength and proved that women have a valuable place in politics.
I hope that in the next few days you celebrate a life well lived and honor a very wonderful woman.
May an angel help guide you through and ease your pain so that you can see what a gift Phyllis was to everyone she touched.
With Love & Friendship,

Thank you for all for your kind words of sympathy and especially those who have shared personal stories because they paint a living picture of who Mom was. Please continue to share your special memories, because it brings us so much joy.
Mom was a wonderful person who touched the lives of so many; even after many years, she remembered every student by name (along with names brothers, sisters, parents house and pets). Why...because you were all so important to her. She would send personal cards when her kindergarten children graduated from high school; it made her so proud. For those who had her as a teacher, you learned lessons like, "I can't hear you unless you say, please" or "if you fib, your eyes turn green." In the Spring, she would hatch chickens and ducks. The kids would eagerly come to school to see what had happened each day. Mom would allow the students to take the chicks and ducks home for an evening visit, learning such lessons as ducks float, but chicks don't. We really appreciate those who have shared memories and those who will do so. So if you know of any others who have some special stories, please ask them to share. With deepest appreciation for all of you who have touched Mom's life, her son, Bill "Doc" Pond

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Pond's family. I was lucky to have her as my kindergarten teacher in the early 70's. I was able to visit with her at the Pizza Hut a couple of years ago. She sat at our table and blessed us with her prescence. Even after all these years, it is with great sadness to see of her passing. She was and is an insperation to me!! Heaven is truly going to be a better place with her in it.
