Hello, my name is Leslie Craft-Cooper. I am a friend of Obie's from Atlanta. I just learned of Obie's demise. Please contact me at email@example.com. I send my condolence to your family.
Happy Birthday to the world's greatest father and baritone! Love you and miss you dearly!
May you treasure your memories as they become more precious in months and years to come.
Psalms 147:3-He is healing the broken-hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spots.
To the Family ~ Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile. These are gifts of love that are ours to keep. Though I do not know the family, I would like to extend my condolences. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so that you will know that you are not alone. And may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day. Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts. - Isaiah 41:10 & 13.
Just thinking about you today "BOOM". Going to see the guys in two weeks and have been thinking about since your B-Day. Just had to stop in and say I love and Miss YOU........
Just thanks for you smile who give me strengh during bad days.
Happy Birthday Daddy!!! I miss you terribly. As we celebrate the day of your birth, we are thankful to God that we had so many wonderful years with you. You are the best Dad a girl could ever ask for. Whenever someone mentions how special you were to them, they always speak about that awesome smile!!! That smile lit up the room and made you feel warm and fuzzy inside. No matter what kind of day you're having, just the sight of you smile would make everything feel alright. You are the best and now you and your brothers are making beautiful music in Heaven. I'll cherish the memories always!!
I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Obie. I met him in St. Petersburg, FL. after their concert with the Temptations. My best friend, siter-in-law of the late great David Ruffin (Joan) intorduced me to Obie. I was truly thrilled. He was very gracious and even graced us with beautiful music by his daughter. We hope to hear her sing again as Obie stated she was not yet published at that time. Obie and these gentleman were so very inspirational to me and my family and friends. I will always remember the bright exciting look in his eyes. He was so warm and friendly as were the rest of the members I met. I only regret I didn't meet the late Melvin Franklin of the Tempts that year due to his illness. However, I will always treasure meeting Obie. He was someone to look up to. Thanky you to his family for sharing him with all of us fans. We will always remember him with great love and much pride in his accomplishments.
While I truly am a big fan of the (Original) Four Tops, and I can appreciate that Levy Stubbs was the lead voice of the Four Tops, my heart belonged to Regnaldo "Obie" Benson. I connected with Obie's joyful and kind spirit. I never had the opportunity to meet Obie, but everytime I saw the Tops perform on television or heard Obie's voice on " She Used to Be My Girl", he (Obie) made me smile, feel happy and, more importantly, thankful to be alive. Obie's expressions of his love of life gave me hope. He was a rare human being, and I will miss him until the day I die. If there is a Heaven, Obie is there making the angles happy.
My wife and I were blessed to see the Four Tops perform twice. There was magic in how they connected with the audience. The younger generation of performers should strive for the same level of professionalism that the Four Tops has given to their fans for over 50 years.
MISS U , U NEED TO MEET UR BROTHER @ THE PEARLY GATES, MR. STUBBS IS CALLING.
Thank You So Much OBIE For Your Love and Music. I will Miss You Dearly.....
Words cannot say what the sound of the Four Tops means to our people...without groups like you we would have a terrible history! Thank You for your sound...God Bless you Obie!
I will always love The Four Tops. Their songs as well as other artists of that era set the standard and defines what classic soul is. The music of these wonderful artists truly captures the beauty and innocence of love. May your family find peace in Jehovah, The God of All Comfort
I'm sorry to hear about your loved one, I would love to share a scripture to the family at John11:25 Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life, he that exercises faith in me even though he dies, will come to life.
A PROUD LIFELONG FAN ,SINGING ON THE CORNER OF WEST FITTH ST. GVILLE ,NC. THE MEASURE OF A GREAT GROUP IS WHEN THEY CAN DO OTHER ARTIST MATERIAL AND MAKE THERE OWN .THEY DID IT WITH EASE , CLASS ,STYLE AND LOVE.I FIRST SAW THE TOPS LIVE AT THE APOLLO 1970 ,WITH THE DETROIT EMERALDS AND EDDIE KENDRICK SOLO ,GREAT SHOW. TO THE FAMILY OF "OBIE" I SAY , WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SOLDIER.
Sadly I will not have the chance to expose MY children to MUSIC, when music was MUSIC!! Almost 3 years later you are still missed. Keep on steppin'!!
Mr. Benson, I just know that you are dancing and singing in heaven. Thank you for your unforgettable music that I still enjoy.
i was and will always be a four tops fan from setting on my front steps in baltimore listening for there latest release and running around the corner to the record shop and demanding that they ordered it ASAP. from there i went into the radio business and not only had the chance to play there music over a 27 year career and then meeting them in walt disney world and spending a few hours with them talking about the business etc. let me say this...there will never, ever be another group like the tops and i truly miss lawrence and renaldo. i will honor and cherish your contributions to our culture and will always sing you praises until my last days on earth. all my best to the family and friends....and most of all rest in eternal peace.
God Bless you Obie. I was at the American Music theatre in 2005. I was only 8 years old when you guys were making it big in the 1960's. I never knew you sang the song- I believe in you and me. Gosh It was beautiful! You were at your best. God bless the Benson family. Obie you'll be well missed. Daniel
I saw The Four Tops for the first time in 1984, and the fourteenth and final
time in 1996. To me they were the definitive Motown group. Over the years,
I have attended many concerts of performers for whom an after show meeting
and greeting was accessible. Like a child for whom an autograph or just a
simple handshake and "hello" would make my day, I often took advantage of
the situation. Of all the times I did so, no one came across being as sweet
and cheerful, time and again, as Renaldo Benson. While I was saddened, of
course, to hear of his passing almost two years ago, I could tell he'd want me to remember
him with a smile. So, in return for his cordiality,
please allow me to send out my words of praise of "Obie" as both an artist and
human being. Yes, I know, I didn't really "know
him." He just made me feel like I was revisiting an old friend everytime I
saw him. I know if I were a performer, I couldn't be as friendly and
outgoing to fans on a one on one basis as often as he proved to be. The
man never seemed to forget how important his fans were to him, and never
looked down on them in a condescending manner.
His stage presence was unbelievable, considering by the time I saw him for
the first time, he had already been singing the same songs for twenty years.
He came across as if they were recorded last week, and he was eager to share
them with the world. Lighting up the stage as he did with his energy and
enthusiasm, he made the whole concert experience one of the most memorable
ones. We all know he had a great singing voice, and I must say, his
speaking voice as well was so charming, I always thought that if the Four
Tops ever broke up, he could make a living doing voice overs. If all of that is not enough, he cowrote what may be the greatest song in
the English language, Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." In my heart, Obie, Duke, Levi, and Lawrence will
always be a part of the here and now.
Having followed the music since I was 8 (when Baby I Need Your Loving was released) it was indeed an honour to fly to Detroit and be a part of the Tops 50th Anniversary celeration at the opera house. Little did we know that Boom Boom would soon be leaving us. A very big thank you to Lawrence, Obie, Duke and Levi for the musical legacy that continues to empower us all. God bless each and every one of you.
god bless you and your family,i never saw you perform but i loved yor music .you are in a better place now.
rest well my friend
Although I am only in my 30s, I own several of the legendary Four Tops' albums. Mr. Benson will be remembered dearly. I hope his family can focus on happy moments, instead of the painful loss.
To the family of Mr Obie Benson, i think it impossible to express what impact the Four Tops have had on American culture. They took us to a world unknown in our hearts with their music and their Brotherly relationship. " What Ever Happened to the Days, we met on Main Street
I was lucky to see three quarters of the original Four Tops at The Hammerstein ballroom in New York City in the late 90's. I saw the Tops live on many occasions, (the first of which was at a Murray The K show at the Brooklyn Fox) but the performance at the Hammerstein was without a doubt THE BEST EVER. Obie Benson was given the chance to really strech out on "When She Was My Girl" He had his own choreography and it seems that he added some additional lyrics and the crowd loved it. All four members of the group had their own special talent, Obie's was the beautiful bass and his gift for dance steps. I always thought that Obie was the co-writer of great song "What's Going On" but now I see that he was THE writer who gave Marvin Gaye and Al Cleveland a credit. The late Lawrence Payton was also a gifted writer as well as the second lead voice of the Four Tops. The Four Tops are an institution and I am looking forward to the contributions I know Theo Peoples, Ronnie McNair and Roquel Payton are going to give to this legendary group to bring the Tops to the top of another generation. Obie R.I.P.
Thanks for the wonderful memories. Mostly the tour of 1983 TNT. I enjoyed the time that I spent with the Tops on the East coast portion of the tour.
Rest my friend.
I recently purchased several "FOUR TOPS" DVDs, which included their 50th Anniversary Celebration. WOOOW!!! This is when I fell in love with Mr. "Boom Boom" Benson. He captured my heart with his beautiful and fun loving spirit! When he made the statement about getting busy doing what you do best, it sparked a fire inside me to go for dreams I had been putting on hold. I didn't know at the time that he is no longer with us. I just want to say that I thank God for allowing his spirit to shine through Mr. Benson and into my life. To Mr. Benson's Family, The Four Tops, Friends and Fans, may God continue to bless and keep you all and give you peace. Love and Well Wishes!!!!!!!!!Annette
Mr. "Obie" Benson is walking with our Father. He is home with our Father!
God Bless and Keep You. I have always been a great admirer and fan.
To the Benson family and the remaining TOPS I send my condolances. The time has gone by so fast. I've read that two of the sons are coming into the group,I think that's great. Roquel is Lawrences' son who is the other one? I know that Duke will carry on the legacy and make the right decisions. I pray for Levi that we'll have a little more time with him. It's hard to believe their gone and the empact it made on the group. But I say THE FOUR TOPS FOEVER.
May the Lord continue to look after and bless the Benson Family. Obie is in his house and will dwell with him forever. Continue to hold tight to your faith and the Lord will guide you through these moments of grief.
Rest in Peace. I will always love you and the Four Tops. You'll never know the wonderful memories your music gave me.
Dear Obie...you are and will be 4ever missed. I enjoyed your presence on every ocassion seeing you with my family. We enjoyed your stage persona at every show we'veseen over the past twenty years. Love you, Love you, Love you.

GOD has a new angel in the choir.
You are missed and I will always
So hard to believe that Obie has gone. I have fond memories of meeting him and Duke on LI many years ago when they sang at a dinner club called Jupiters. Obie was such a warm human being and such a pleasure to watch. Rest in peace, Obie.
I'll miss you. I loved the Four Tops
My deepest sympathies to Obies’ Family. I’m a thirthy year old latin male that asoulutely loves the four tops. It hurts me to know that one of the greats of Motown’s music has left this earth. This world is truly in need of more musicians like Obie to bring serenity and peace back to this world.
I have loved the Four Tops since I was a teenager and that was almost as long as they've been together. I loved all of their music and their group. I saw them perform in 1997 in Las Vegas and I last saw them when they appeared in Atlantic City in 1998. I remember fondly talking about how much fun Obie looked like he was having on stage and I remember how well he danced. He will surely be missed by all who loved the Four Tops. He's now at peace and is in the Choir with Luther, Ray and others. He will always be remembered and I send my condolescences to his family.
In 52 years of Living and after being exposed to the best in the world of music and song, it is the FOUR TOPS, who to me exhibit culture, character and musical creativity that places you somewhere beyond space and time. We may set their shoes aside, but we can never fill them.
Absolutely shattered when I heard of his passing. The four greatest singers who ever lived are now two. I saw Duke Fakir on tour in Newcastle, England and shook his hand and have to admit, I fought back a tear as the music played and the memories of Obie and Lawrence came to mind..it was an honour to also shake Lawrence's sons' hand. God Bless Obe and Lawrence.
We all loved your music now you will live in our hearts forever!!!
My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Obie Benson. He will be missed, but his legacy will be forever in our hearts.
May the memory of the Four Tops live on forever and ever in the hearts of the fans...my heart is saddened with the loss of "Obie", and I will never forget his beautiful smile.
A fan forever!!
Obie, you were always like fine wine. Your sound was always so unique & distinct. You brought so much fun & spunk to the group. You brought so much fun & excitement to those you entertained. I am very sad that your'e not here with us but, I do know you are in a better place. God Bless You Brother Obie. I Love You, Jimmy
my prayers are with the BENSON FAMILY & THE FOUR TOPS rest in peace BOM BOM OBIE BENSON D.T.GIBBS
From having the privilege of knowing the Tops personally, I can honestly say that each of them had/has something "special" that made me have love for them:
Levi= crazy; jokester
Lawrence= cool; laid back
Duke= professional; even keeled
Now even though I've known them ever since my Dad joined the band (1978), up until 3 years ago I didn't know how GENEROUS and KIND Obie was. I am saddened even more, because I never properly thanked him for all he did for me, my brother, and my niece (Zion).
Toby, Ebony, Val: I know it's a little late, but you are and will always be in my prayers.
My condolences to the family. I am a huge Four Tops fan and have seen them in concert for over 30 years of my life. I always enjoyed them and they've brought me alot of fond memories. I am glad that the Four Tops will carry on w/ the son of a former Top, Obie would of wanted that, along w/ Levi. May God Bless you, rest in peace and thanks for all the joy and wonderful times you've brought to my life in song and performing. God Bless - Sheri S.
I offer my deepest condolences. Instead of being sad, lets celebrate his life. His music brought joy and a smile to everyone's face. May GOD bless his soul. AMEN.
R.I.P. Brotha Obie- 4 tops 4ever

Our families (4 Tops) became one "big" family years ago, and we
will always cherish the closeness we have with each other.

Wow...words cannot express the loss. As we age the more we seem to recognize the importance of our past. The memories that constantly come to mind from our favorite songs. "It's the same old song"
We just saw them maybe a year ago in Ocean City, MD. He was the life of the show with his jokes and banter. We must live our life to the fullest, for tomorrow is not promised. Love to your family!
I am deeply saddended to have just learned of the death of Obie Bensen. I was just a kid when The Four Tops reigned supreme on the charts, but I do remember very well my older brothers/sisters blaring "I'll Be There", "Reach Out...", among others. It's hard to believe that in the span of three weeks we have lossed three great voices in Black America (Luther - Eugene - Obie). Heaven is really rocking now. To the Bensen Family and to The Four Tops - I would like to extend my sincerest condolences and to let you know we share your loss as well. Obie forever will be remembered by not only Black American, but America in general as well as worldwide. RIP Obie
The music world has lost a gifted entertainer, and in behalf of all the members of HALO we will miss him and all his inspiration ,love ,and passion for music.

OH WHAT A BLESSING TO HAVE HAD RENALDO IN MY LIFE, HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.WE LOVED HIM, BUT GOD LOVED HIM MORE.
Your voice, though no longer being heard here on earth, will always be heard whenever a Four Tops song is played. You were the original Fab Four and now your voice will join Marvin, Tammy, David, Eddie and all the great voices of Motown now singing in the heavenly choir. May your family and friends be comforted in knowing that you will always be remembered by the fans and that the fans prayers are with them in this time of sorrow. God bless.

Walk with God, my friend.
How powerful and great is our Lord? God is so wonderful that he called Obie home to Heaven right after Luther Vandross, can you imagine the music the angels and them as well as other artists are singing to Jesus Christ and God in Heaven. my husband (Melvin) of almost 25 yrs. went home to heaven almost a month ago 6/17/05 and it gives me some peace to know that he is with such angels in the arms of God and Jesus. many blessings and may god bless the loved ones of Obie and his family..
He will truly be missed, he touched alot of lives with his music. We love you Renaldo "Obie" Benson.
The four voices became one whenever the 4Tops sang; Obie your voice was outstanding and thrilling and the blend was beautiful; sing with the angels now...and tell Luther hello.
OBIE...a multi-talent, a great man.
Heart felt condolences to his family, friends and fans.
I am one of the Four Tops biggest fans. I am so glad that I got to finally see them perform in person this past April. I am so saddened by Obie's death. Even though the Tops are not the same, I hope they will keep performing and let the music of Levi, Lawrence, Obie and Duke live on. I know that Obie would want us to share the love with the new Tops, as well.
The Four Tops will never be the same without Obie Benson... He brought a unique style to the stage with his comical antics. He was a great artists and he will be missed.
My prayers are with the remaining group members, his family, friends and many fans.
My prayers are with Renaldo and his family. He will be truly missed.

the the family: you have my deepest sympathy in your time of need. remember, god does not put anymore on you than you can bear.
The Four Tops sang many a love song for many, many a year. However, to me, their greatest legacy is that they walked the walk and DEMONSTRATED true love. Love of their craft as vocalists and showmen. Love for one another. NOBODY stays together for decades due to business considerations. Their love for one another shall stand tall for all the ages. Thank you, Obie, for your part in creating this enduring story.
Another great person who has passed this way but has left a GREAT music memory behind,R.I.P.Obie.

The show was great, and I am so glad we had the time to spend together before you left town.I do remember telling Obie about his smile, and what it meant to all of us. I will miss you Obie.
The 4 Tops helped to shape my musical taste. there harmonies were so tender and uplifting at the same time and Obie was a big part of that unique sound. His collaboration with Marvin Gaye on What's going on is another milestone in soul music history. Rest in peace.

I was sadden to hear of losing Obie Benson. The Four Tops' music made growing up with my two brothers in Los Angeles bearable. I'll never forget them. Obie's smile was so genuine; he seemed to breath music and performing which he gave to us. Thank you Obie.
Family, God comforts your pain with lasting and loving memories of your Father.

To the Family of Renaldo "Obie" Benson: My heartfelt condolences to you at this difficult time. I had the pleasure of seeing the Four Tops in concert many times, and totally enjoyed Obie's stage performance. He made the shows that much more enjoyable. His legacy is not only his work with the Tops, but those powerful lyrics to What's Going On?...he will live on in all of our hearts.

The world, will be a little different place without him now.

To The Benson Family:
Obie and the Four Tops made real music. This is why some 40 years later we still hear their music as "classic oldies". I agree with my sister who also signed this guest book, "It was an era when music was clean, fun, danceable, and memorable". Obie, you will be missed.
The family, relatives, friends and fans. You have my deepest sympathy.
To the Family, Friends and devoted fans, I wish to convey my heart felt sympathy, I love The Four Tops as I am a native Detroiter and grew up on the music during the Motown era. It saddens me to know that one of our own has been
silenced but will not be forgotten.
May God Blees and Keep You
Sandra M. Collier and Family
May God's Love and Mercy comfort each of you.
My condolence to the Benson family, thank you Obie and The Four Tops for stilling the waters of a tubulent childhood, "peace and love"

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Matt. 5;4.
Deepest sympathy to Obie's family. May they take comfort in knowing that so many people loved the music of the 4 Tops. Their music represents an era when music was clean, singable, danceable and down right FUN music. For me, it is the background music of the 60s making history along with the civil rights movement. The 4 Tops music is timeless.
Your music was and always will be one of my most memorable times in life. You truly will be miss. Thank you for sharing your voice with us. May you have eternal peace.
Please accept my condolences in your time of grief. May God continue to bless and kept you in your time of need.
Last night in Baltimore there was a terrible storm, and the thunder was louder than usual. And then I remebered Heaven now has two of the worlds greatest bass singers, my father, Melvin Franklin and now my beloved Uncle Obie. No longer will the storms frighten me, how could they when two of the men I have loved all my life, are above me battling it out in true BASS form.
May God Bless you and keep you!
I have listen to and enjoyed your music. You will truly be missed. My condolences to your family.

I am so thankful that my 9 year old daughter, who is such a big fan, was able to see the 4 Tops perform last February in Orlando. When asked if she would like to say something she said to tell Obie to keep smiling and dancing in Heaven and that she will miss him.

Benson, will truly be missed. I listen to all of the Four Tops Records along with my children.
Just Keep right on singing.
Met Obie when I worked as an orderly at Grace Hospital. I had just got out of the military and I had the dubious honor of taking Obie, who was a patient, back to his room. I was an aspiring singer
and Obie invited me to the Tops studio over on Puritan street in Detroit. There I met the rest of the Tops and Fred Bridges, Fred Jr (Red), Lawrence Payton Jr. Also met many great musicians there. I developed my craft there. Eventually formed a group with Red and Lawrence Payton, Jr, and understudied the Tops. virtually lived at the studio. Since then I have released a couple of CDs myself, but my experience with Obie and the rest of the Tops I will treasure forever. May you rest in peace Obie!
The heavenly choir will be blessed by the addition of your voice raised in eternal hymns of praise.
May you find eternal rest in the Father's house.
I will miss you. The Four Tops were a premium musical group. You and the other groups of your era at Motown put black Detroit and Soul Music on the international map.
Peace to you.

We shall never have such an icon as the Four Tops who sang about "Love". "Thank your for your contributions because love is real; for God is love. We don't hear about love in the music that is sung in this generation. Love is not volient and brutal, but love is kind, gentle, giving, and forever lives on in the hearts of those that do find love. May God comfort your family and love ones.

To The Benson Family - You have my deepest sympathy for your beloved lost. I have been a fan of the Four Tops since I was a little girl. I tried to make as many shows as possible especially when they were in the DC area. Once I became a chauffeur, I remember they were one of the first celebrities that I had the pleasure of driving. It was during the Christmas Holiday. The group sang Christmas carols in the back of the stretch from the airport to the hotel. It was like my private show. I was speechless. I will always remember that special time. Mr. Benson will now be in Heaven rockin from side to side with all the other great singers. May the Lord be with you.

Thank you Obie for your spirit, energy, voice and life.
Family members...cherish the memories.
Sincere sympathy to the Benson Family.
Barry White, Luther Vandross, and now Renaldo Benson. The Lord "wants only the best for his vineyards."The (Chicago)Chilites,4-Tops, Delfonics, and Dells were "icons", and will always be. God be with them (all) and their families, during this homecoming season. In our time of need, He knows (and feels) our despair. "Death ends a life, but not a relationship, which struggles on in the survivor's mind, toward some resolution, which it may never find." (Author Robert Anderson; I never sang for my father). Our heavenly father will always "make a way out of no way."
The Family of Renaldo "Obie" Benson. I was raised in the era of the Four Tops. He was a Icon. May your family be blessed in your lost.

It’s God’s Will And We Must Comply
By: Charles G. Turner,
Life is uncertain,
But as sure as we are born one day we must die
Sometimes we sit and wonder why
The fact is it’s God’s will and we must comply.
Throughout our life we live we live through happiness and sadness
And many toils and strife
And when our earthly life is over we enter into our “eternal life”
Whenever a loved one or friend makes their earthly depart
It is natural for it to bring hurt and sorrow to our heart
And to deal with our loss we grieve, mourn, and cry
In all essence we must remember this is God’s will and we must all must comply
For those of us that are left behind
We must cherish the special memories
And keep them all in mind
Just remember it is not for us to question why we have to die
It’s God’s will and we all have to comply
May God Bless and comfort all of you
To The Family of Mr Renaldo Benson
