I ran track at Bates College back in the early 1970's, and kept up with the sport after graduating, so I knew all about Peter Goodrich and his remarkable athletic achievements long before September 11, 2001. His loss was well-reported to everyone in the larger Bates community, and was felt by everyone - even by those, such as me, who came before he did. Several years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of working on a piece of litigation with Don Goodrich. He was my opponent, and was as decent and civil an adversary as I have ever encountered - in a business in which those qualities are often in short supply. I never knew Sally, but had heard of her work, and admired it from a distance. I know that people with true courage are always the first to deny that they have any, and I suspect Sally was the same. But from my perspective, I cannot imagine a greater act of courage than to carry on as she did, in the face of such a staggering loss.
Don, you have my heartfelt condolences. May Sally and Peter be at peace.

Sally Goodrich and I suddenly became linked together by the tragic death of an extraordinary and kind human being - her son, Peter Goodrich.

We only spoke twice about Peter, who was killed on the second plane that slammed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. But those two brief conversations over the phone told me all I needed to know about a remarkable and dedicated mother who had the courage and tenacity to go on living despite the shattering loss of her beloved son.

To this day, I don't know how Sally Goodrich found a reason to get out of bed each morning. Just after Peter's death, Sally was diagnosed with cancer, and now she was forced to fight off a life-threatening disease while continuing to cope with her overwhelming grief.

Some of us might have called it quits, close all the shades, shut out the living and allow grief and depression to consume us.

But despite her endless sorrow and nagging sickness, Sally found an outlet to remember and honor her cherished son. She and her husband, Donald, founded the Peter Goodrich Foundation, which raises money to build and fund schools in Afghanistan.

Two weeks after Peter died on that warm Tuesday afternoon, a friend of mine, who works for Stars and Stripes, informed me that Peter was a passenger on the second plane that struck the towers.

At first, Peter's name didn't ring a bell. I was still numb after the terrorist attacks. As a sportswriter and editor for the Lewiston Sun Journal, I kept a filing cabinet with some of the stories I had written over the years. At the top the stack of papers were several articles I had done about the Bates College All-American track star.

I called Donald and spoke with him just two weeks after those heinous events in New York City. It was one of the most difficult interviews I had ever done as a reporter. I knew life would never be the same for the Goodriches or the nation.

I remember Peter as a kind and modest athlete who was setting records in the hammer throw at Bates College. When you spoke with Peter, you knew right away that he was raised by caring and educated parents who put their children first. He was tribute to Sally's and Donald's love and devotion to their children.

Several years later, I got a call from Sally at the Sun Journal. She politely asked if she could reprint the articles I wrote about Peter on the foundation's Web site. I spoke with my editor and Sally was given the OK to place my stories on the site.

We spoke for a few minutes when she told me "that out of all the stuff that has been written about Peter, I read your articles every day because of the quotes you used in the story."

I was silent for a few seconds. You never know if the stuff you write ever touches anyone's soul. And now those words I wrote long ago continued to comfort a mother who suffered the most devastating loss of all - the death of a child.

I thanked this courageous woman for her kind compliments. We would speak once more when her son was posthumously inducted into the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

It would be the last time we talked about Peter.

Sally Goodrich, who wouldn't allow her grief to rule her and courageously plunged right back into to life to make a difference in the world, died at her home in Vermont on Dec. 18, 2010. She was 65.

Thank you Sally for being fearless and an inspiration to all of us in a world that could benefit from more compassionate individuals like you.

Rest in peace.

While a student at Bennington College, I did not have many connections with the local community. Hearing the town name mentioned on NPR today thankfully perked up my ears as I was introduced to a great spirit and the wonderful story of Sally Goodrich. I was moved by her strength, courage and imagination to move through grief and do what is right and good rather than seek revenge for that which cannot be revenged. Sally and Don's actions towards education and knowledge are a far more powerful tool than any weapon and bring us, as a nation, one step closer to the love and understanding so desperately needed if we are to overcome the war and hatred in the world. I feel just a bit happier, in the shadow of her death, that I was in such Presence while living in Bennington.
Condolences.

My family has reaped the benefit of Sally's love and generosity through getting to know one of her host students, Naeem. I hope it brings comfort for her family to know that he reflects her spirit and determination for peace. Her passing is untimely (and unfair) but she's built a legacy that will continue to benefit all of us.

I was so sorry to hear of Sally's passing. What an amazing lady! Funny, kind, giving, always looking for the positive. A benchmark for all of us to live by. In my eccentric brain, I imagine God asking Jesus "to move down one" to make room for her at his side!

May her beautiful legacy of love be a balm to your hearts.

Foss & Family~
Long ago, I remember a woman at a Mt. Greylock football game with a long staff, with various instruments attached. The sound graced our ears with her enthusiasm for every single boy on that field...not just her own! HONESTLY, I think of her at every football game that I attend, and that is a large number!
She will be missed far beyond the reach of her many efforts, and past all of us that knew her, her husband, her children, or her grandchildren and into the future...one that she did change!

No one but Sally could face such losses and battle cancer with such bravery and keep going so long with such energy and determination. "Saint" Don remained behind this successful woman supporting her in all her endeavors. They faught hard to keep Cora B. Whitney School open and Sally was my lifeline during that transition to Molly Stark, especially with computer support! She did so much for the education here in Bennington as well all her impact in Afghanistan. She really isn't gone - she will always be a part of me and who I am today. I'm sure she'll be flying around with Rick. "Look out!"

TO ONE GONE TOO SOON

Little angel, sent from God
To a desperate mother in need,
You touched the hearts of those you loved,
With every word and deed.

The pain you suffered and endured,
Would have conquered a weaker soul
Your willful, stubborn, hope-filled heart
Placed you in a stronger role

Sixty Five precious years
You nurtured love in a woman void
You gave your love, and life and hope
And kept your spirits buoyed.

Now in heaven, Sarah, please,
Keep watch o'er your dearest loves
And always remember, won't you please
You were loved like no other.

You will always be in my heart

While your hearts are heavy as you miss her, let the joy of knowing that her struggle is now over bring you some peace and comfort. And what a delight to know that she is now sitting and holding Peter's hand, as they both watch over you.
