I always considered Shirley Verrett to be an icon: a woman of immense talent, beauty, and grace who, for a brief moment, I was blessed to encounter. She sang a concert at my undergraduate alma mater and, as a music student, I was blessed to work back stage, offering her such things as chicken soup and tea. She declined both, but offered warmth and grace instead, heaping an amazing concert recital on the top. It was unforgettable. I have often wanted to tell her in person how her presence as an African-American operatic singer influenced my life as a young African-American baritone. She is remembered with joy. God's blessings of peace be upon her husband, Louis, daughter, Francesca, and other family members. She was the BEST!

As Time rolls on we must let go of the greatest gifts given to us from God. Shirley was a fine lady, a gentile spirit and one who brought greatness into our lives. She is remembered by all who were graced with her presence. Thank you for letting us share the burden of the physical loss and the joy of the eternal salvation she so dearly believed in. Let us keep the Spirit alive through all the memories of the greats, like Shirley and let us all be encouraged to strive to always do the very best at what ever we place our hands, to the glory of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
What a glamorous Proverbs 31 woman.

First time I met SHirley Verrett was during Siege of Cornith at the MET. Before her huge act 3 aria, she quickly handed me something and said hold on to this - it was a wad of something like kreosote (or it may have been licorice). It still makes me laugh! Bill Russell, New York, NY)

Dear Lou, Francesca and family,
Our deepest condolences on the loss of Shirley, our beloved former neighbor. We have warm memories of delightful visits with your family, and Shirley as a thoughtful, committed and beautiful person who was innately modest despite her elegance and celebrity as a stunningly gifted musician. Her singing at Tanglewood and elsewhere provided memories for a lifetime. Wishing you well as we share your sorrow from afar.

God bless Shirley, she brought much happyness and pleasure to this lover of opera. I was always moved with her performances of Delilah, and part of me died with her passing. Hope to see you again one day on the other side.
November 29, 2010
Dear Verrett Family,
I had the great privilege of singing with Shirley in my professional debut in the 1980 New Orleans production of Carmen. She was, of course, stellar. But more importantly, to a young singer like myself, she offered calm, centered advice, and was a model of professionalism on and off the stage. In the following years as we met again in various venues, she always remembered me by name and was most generous with her precious time. I think this, her generosity of spirit, came through so clearly in her exquisite singing and in her fine, graceful personality. I shall always remember Ms. Verrett with gratitude and deep happiness. She created a place in history that is uniquely hers.

I am sorry I never got to meet Shirley. Her little brother Ron is one of my close friends and also a fine musician. He has taught me much. I am sure I'll be able to meet her someday.
November 26, 2010
To the Verrett family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Words can't express how much Shirley Verrett has meant to me, an aspiring singer, ever since I first heard her glorious voice. Since then she has inspired me with her beauty, class, and immense artistry. I know she is singing in Heaven with the Seraphims.

To the Family of Shirley Verrett:

Surely the sun must have dimmed for just a moment at the passing of this great lady and magnificent artist. I had the good fortune to meet her early in the 1960s, when I sang background on what I believe was her very first RCA Recording, "Singin' Through the Storm," with chorus and orchestra, conducted by Leonard De Paur. It was obvious that she was destined for success. I followed her career from her first Carnegie Hall Recital, to the Met, and later as a recitalist on the college circuit. She was never less than phenomenal. When I began my biography of Hall Johnson in the early 2000s, she was kind enough to write her personal recollections of her coaching with Johnson for inclusion in my book. I was able to thank her by sending a tape of her first Victor recording which somehow, she didn't have. Her loss to the world is mitigated by her extensive recorded
legacy of operatic and recital repertoire, much of which I own.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. She will ever remain in my memory and in my life.

I will always hold my 'X-sister-in-law" close to my heart. She was a most beautiful woman , inside and out, and a friend. I will never forget the times I spent with her and "Uncle Louis." I think of her so often and was shocked to hear of her passing. Shirley, you will always live in my heart. Missy.
November 20, 2010
Dear family of Ms. Verrett,
I had the luck to hear Ms. Verrett live many times. In Venice I heard all performances of La Favorita (1988) and I could hear a lot of recitals in Italy. It is impossible to forget the deep professionality of Ms. Verrett, who always was in each rehearsal from the beginning to the first performance. It was a joy to greet Ms. Verrett after her recitals and her opera interpretations in Italy. I hope that many opera houses, not only in USA but also in Europe, will rembember her voice and her example.
With my condolences and my affection,
Roberto Scoccimarro

Dear Lou, I was so saddened to hear of Shirley's passing...what a lady...what an artist, what a wonderful human being...in that smile alone there was such love and understanding...and how she took the stage. Shirley and I travelled back together once from Barcelona after she sang Eboli there...we kept eachother company on the trip back and had some nice talks. She is remebered in my heart. I have you and Francesca in my thoughts and prayers.
With affection,

To the Verrett family:

My most heartfelt sympathies to the Verrett family on the loss of Shirley Verrett. I heard her perform many times at the Met and in concerts and was always deeply moved. I was in the audience on the evening of February 21, 1978 for the opening night of Donizetti's "La Favorita. Her interpretation of "O tu Fernando" left me in tears. I also remember her in a concert with Grace Bumbry in which they sang the "Mira O Norma" duet. It was an "electrifying" performance and, in response to the wild applause and shouting, they sang it again as an encore! Her interpretation of Princess Eboli ranks among one of the greatest. May she rest in peace and listen to the choirs of angels sing to her.
November 14, 2010
I must have listened to her recording of Macbeth 100 times. Her voice was so thrilling. She could touch your soul. I told her so in an email and she was kind enough to answer back. She had so many fans. She will be missed.

I was in High School in Matawan New Jersey, circa 1964-66-ish, when my friends and myself went to NYC to see Carmen: Shirley Verrett played the title role. We were up in the cheap seats. As I recall, it was held in Carnegie Hall because at that time, the Met as we know it now in Lincoln Center, was not yet built. She was a gorgeous Carmen. Did not know that she, like me, ended up here in Michigan. Very sorry
to know of the passing of this "L'oiseau rebelle". 79 seems young, these days. Requiescet in pacem. Kate (Conley) Kent

To be told "no" and overcome it would be too simplistic when discussing Shirley Verrett. She moved beyond prejudice, parental disapproval and vocal criticism with such courageous grace!
Carmen, Eboli, Azucina, Dido, Norma, Tosca and, her Lady Macbeth! What an enviable body of work she has left behind.
Thank you Ms. Verrett for giving so much of yourself and thank you to her husband and daughter for sharing her with us.
November 14, 2010
Dear Verrett Family,

Our heartfelt condolences on your extraordinary loss. Ms. Verrett will stay in our hearts for generations to come, as she was a true example excellence, accomplishment, beauty and grace.

To the Family of Ms. Shirley Verrett:

It is impossible for you to comprehend the number of people who share your grief and whose prayers are with you now and always as you celebrate the life of such an exquisite artist, consummate musician and woman of grace and integrity! I first met Ms. Verrett when she was artists in residence at Tanglewood and I was a vocal fellow during that same summer. Her singing was magnificent and her encouragement to young singers was so special. I was last in her presence during the signing of her book "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the NANM, Inc. My deepest condolences to the family of Shirley Verrett. I had the great priviledge of having Shirley be one of the judges when I won the Metroplitan Opera Auditions, I later had the opportunity to sing with her during my career. It was an honor to work with her because she was not only a wonderful artist with a fabulous voice, but she was also an elegant woman that I admired and respected greatly. She was a star that will always be remembered. Thank you for what you gave the wonderful world of music.

May you find comfort also in God's promises found in the last book of the Holy Scriptures. "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Dearest close close friend. We were together just eight weeks ago .After brunch we made loving promises, hugging as we kissed each other goodbye.I am so glad we had our "sister" time together and will always cherish those last moments as the sweetest in our eleven years. I know one night you went to sleep and passed on. But you are here, your voice is ever resonating ,not only in awesome memories of your exquisite artistry in so many roles, it is you, your persona, your essence and the gift of yourself that you have shared with so many colleagues, students, friends and family. Your reach and your stretch seemed boundless. You never walked alone and we are not alone because we have you in our hearts and minds deservedly. Thank you for having been on this earth and sharing your soul with me. My love will always be kindled at the thought of you. Forever close, E

As a vocal performance student inthe 1970's at Central State Univ. in Ohio, I was blessed to have a letter writing relationship with Ms. Verrett. She was always encouraging and supportive. She invited my friends and I backstage after one of her local performances during my college years. May her body rest in peace, and may her voice soar with the angels.
November 11, 2010
Many of us are saddened by the death of Shirley Verrett whom I knew in life as a singer of great warmth and beauty of sound, a considerate colleague with a big, bright smile and flashing eyes, a woman dedicated to her art and to her family.
I shall remember her as an earnest performer who, through her outstanding dramatic talent and exceptional vocal capabilities, brought intelligence, dignity and human understanding to her performances in opera.
For a moment in time, in 1967, we, Leontyne, Shirley and I, quietly and successfully walked on a single path the result of which still today bears witness to the small mark we three american, african american singers together made in the world of opera - and american history.
To Lou and to the family, my husband, Ulf Thomson, and I send sincere condolences.
November 11, 2010
I worked with Miss Verrett and most of her performances with Sarah Caldwell and the Opera Co. of Boston as her hair and make-up person and it was an unforgetable time for me. She was the best, for sure. Those moments together, both in Boston and here in NYC will never be forgotten. My meeting Lou and Francesca were memorable too and years have passed since those times. Francesca was very young and wonderful and Lou was charming as ever. The time has passed and I will never forget. I share your sadness.

Rest in peace.

Dear Verrett family, friends and fans, my deep sympathies are with you. Please be comforted by the revelation by Jesus found at Revelation 21:3-4.
November 10, 2010
I was fortunate enough to have heard Miss Verrett in recital on several occasions, but the one that stands out in my my mind is a recital in Chicago in which I felt she surpassed Price and equalled Callas. Her regal manner her incomparable musicianship and her artistry left an indelible memory on this opera buff. I will miss her great voice and I am glad that once I ran into her at the Detroit opera house and was able to convey to her my sadness at her not having received a Kennedy Center award...well she never did but to all her loyal fans that is the Center's loss not Miss Verrett's..She has joined that heavenly choir wherein the immortals dwell. Rest in peace.

Ms. Verrett was and is in the pantheon of fierce, fearless singers and actors-a lady of the stage who inspired and awed all of us-particularly us mezzos. I am sorry I never met her but I have her recordings and DVD's and loved she did not let anything get in the way of being true to the music and the composer's intentions. I envy those who were her students and could see and hear her beauty. My condolences to her students, the UM community and her family. Deepets Respects

on the other side of the quantum veil,
in a dimension just beyond sensation,
the aria's last note is sung
and the audience raises a raucous ecstasy;
the men longingly throw bouquets
upon the stage's apron, dreaming perhaps
of a moment near that face, melting in
the breath that carried a visual and vocal art
to such a perfect sublimity.

I'd spent quality time with my Aunt Shirley at her book signing in Los Angeles, and during the weekend of Grandmother Verrett's funeral. I'd hoped to see her again on this side of eternity, but I can't wait to hug her on the Sea of Glass! She was a warm and talented woman, and I miss her.

I was fortunate enough to have been working at the Met when Shirley Verrett made her debut....shortly after, she appeared as Eboli in Don Carlo and a few of the other younger singers and I were standing off-stage watching her power through "O Don Fatale" and I remarked to my buddy "Wow, she didn't run out of steam at the end!!!" Well I'm sure she's singing with the angels now and will be missed and mourned.
November 08, 2010
What a lovely memories she has left this world. Such an amazing, graceful and inspiring woman. Her beautiful voice sends shivers up my spine and brings tears to my eyes. So much love, light and blessings to her family and loved ones.

A light has gone out, but through her artistry Shirley Verrett lighted a flame within us which, through her recordings, shall never be extinguished. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with her family. To our everlasting deep gratitude we were privileged and honored when Shirley Verrett served multiple times as one of the distinguished judges at our Italian Songs and Arias Vocal Competition for Michigan High School Students. Her passion and love in reviewing and encouraging each of the talented young finalists in the competition were something to behold and truly inspirational. Shirley, we love you, and the memory of you will be with us forever.

To my family, may God comfort you all during this time of sadness. Cousin Shirley was a beautiful person who we all loved and appreciated. She will be greatly missed.
November 08, 2010
Ms Verrett's voice often moved the listener's very soul. It was so wonderful to be inspired by such a tremendous artist on stage. I will never forget the thrill and joy of each performance I experienced. Rest in peace for yours was a life well lived. We are all the better for the sacred art you shared so freely.
November 08, 2010
I first heard Madame Verrett in Florence, 1967. It was Carmen, I was 12 and in the following years I was lucky enough to met her many times, in opera, concert and recital, the very last time being a recital at Rome Opera in 1992. I was in love with her voice, artistry and personality : she was radiant, warm, incredibly beautiful and, of course, one of the very very great artists of our time. She obviously had a love affair with her public, and in Italy she had some of her greatest triumphs. And I am so sad, so sad... I have so many photos of Madame Verrett i took in Rome and Florence, Naples or Verona and I will always love and respect her.
November 08, 2010
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Elvira, Ron, Joe, and family, I want pass along my condolences.
November 08, 2010
Aunt Shirl was not only a great vocalist, but a sweet person. When I was little she used to send a limousine to pick us up to go watch her performances in San Francisco. MacBeth was on of her best musicals I have seen. I did not appreciate the experience until I was able to reflect as an adult the wonderful person and artist she truly was. Her memory will always be vivid in my mind.
I will never forget when I wrecked her rental car. She was so sweet about it. I saw a different side of her and grew to love her very quickly. Aunt Shirl, I know you can't hear me, but I will always love you and miss I do miss hearing your sweet voice.
November 08, 2010
I was lucky enougth to see and hear a performance of yours. May you rest in peace, superb artist and good person!!
November 08, 2010
I had the great privilege to sing Adalgisa with Shirley's NORMA at the Met. It was such a wonderful experience, not only because our voices fit very well together, but because she was such a lovely colleague. It was a difficult time in my life because my mother was dying of cancer. Shirley was so sympathetic and understanding when I finally left the tour to be with my mom. Shirley was such a great lady, in many ways a role model for me. My Dalila followed hers at La Scala; my Carmen followed hers in Spoleto. Mezzos make the best friends. I'm just so sorry our paths did not cross more often. My heartfelt condolences go to her husband and beloved daughter.
November 08, 2010
One of the greatest singers of the last century, and one of my first operatic idols. I loved her pungent low notes, richly fascinating texture in her middle voice, and especially the exciting, ringing top notes. Her Eboli and Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda are benchmark performances. May her memory be for a blessing.
November 08, 2010
So many have carved paths for others with exemplary talent and determination. Thank you Shirley Verrett. I am truly sorrowed by your passing.
November 08, 2010
I consider it a privilege and an honor to have been acquainted with Shirley over 50 years ago in California, listening to her golden voice in church, was so inspirational. During the ensuing years, I closely followed her professional life, and continued to be thrilled with her talent and music. Her physical voice is stilled now, but she left us with a rich legacy of beautiful music that will live on and on. I extend my condolences to all of Shirley's family, the Verrett family and other members. May God bless you and heal your sorrow.
November 08, 2010
Professor Verrett was my voice teacher while studying at the University of Michigan. Studying with her was an honor. She was an amazing performer, teacher, mentor and friend. She truly loved and cared for her students. One semester I had several upcoming opera auditions and all of my roommates were sick with the flu. Professor Verrett paid to have me stay in a hotel so that I could be healthy and rested for my audition. I will never forget her kindness or her friendship.

Dear Mr.Lou and Ms.Francesca and Verrett Family,

Today my heart and feelings go out to you and all of Madame Shirley's fans. My family knew the Verrett family in Oxnard California. Mr.Verrett was a craftsman builder, building homes in the Colonia area of Oxnard after World War II. He helped build my grandparent's home on Roosevelt and First Street. At that time white builders would not serve the Black and Latino families, even if thier children had served this country in the Armed Services.
I played on the same baseball team with Troy her brother. It was at their house that I heard her voice. I went home astounded that such a voice could reach that level.
My sith grade teacher told me that Shirley had attended the same neigbor hood school,Ramona School here in the Colonia and took us to the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara to hear other singers.
Today I am teaching school at Ramona school and have for the last eight years introduce Madame Shirley to my students as well as her music. Today I will play her CD Shirley Varrett in Opera as a tribute to her.I will continue to present her to my future students as a great example of courage and fortitude.

As tenants and neighbors from 1981 to 1984 in Manhattan, we will never forget your gratiousness as we occasionally met in the hallways of that beautiful brownstone. Listening to you practice from our apartment above was always a treat. To Lou and Francesca, our heartfelt condolences on the loss of a precious and sweet loved one.

Shirley will be missed by so many. Her voice and drive helped to make me the singer I am today.

My prayers are with Ms. Verrett's wonderful husband Lou and all family members. Listening to her perfomance of Neocle at the Met inspired me to become a better singer and a better person. Her Princess Eboli and so many other roles continue to have this affect on me. May God's Peace be with you. We will never walk alone as you sing with the angels.
November 08, 2010
A voice from heaven and a soul sent from the gods. May you rest in peace. YOu will be sorely missed
November 07, 2010
I had the privilege of expriencing the artistry of Miss Verrett live on at least two occasions; once as Carmen with the New Orleans Opera. The other in concert with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. The inspiring words that she shared with this young singer at the time remain with me today, and I refer to them often.

Be in peace, Miss Verrett. Your legacy of love will live on!
November 07, 2010
I first heard her as Giovanna Seymour in that fabulous "Anna Bolena" with Beverly Sills...their big duet was belcanto singing writ large and I would listen to it over and over again. Years later I would listen in awe as she scaled the virtuosic heights of Rossini in her performance as Neocle...The runs, trills, cantilena, they were all there. And to think only a year later she would sing a "Mild und Leise" of heart-breaking beauty. Listening to her voice as it soared in and out of Wagner's dense orchestral fabric, watching that gorgeous face register all of Isolde's emotions, it was hard not to be deeply moved.
A gorgeous woman, and a beautiful voice that was capable of saying SO much. Never a boring moment from a diva who knew that opera, at it's core, is primal scream refined, polished like a gleaming diamond as it's shot through the lens of human experience.
She was a marvel. Brava, Shirley!
November 07, 2010
God bless your soul Madam Shirley Verrett. I will never forget the gifts of interest, wisdom, and time you shared so generously. Thank you for your life, legacy, and example of extraordinary greatness, humility, and true Christian spirit. Your smile, we remember. Your spirit….we do aspire. Your memory, we cherish. Your voice, the angels welcome its return. Be at rest and be well.
November 07, 2010
I saw my very first opera with Ms. Verrett as Tosca. I immediately fell in love with the art form. She was amazing. I made certain that I got to see her perform with Luciano at The Met. She had a major influence on me...and now I share that love and this opera with the hundreds of middle and high school students that I teach. Rest in Peace, Ms. Verrett...you are singing with the angels.

Caro Lou, cara Francesca,

On behalf of the entire Alcorn family, Sabina and I would like to extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences. Try as we may, we cannot begin to fathom the loss of this majestic Artist and supremely principled soul--truly one of the twentieth century's great gifts to humanity, and the performing arts. Although a towering, larger-than-life presence when onstage--offstage she appeared the opposite--at once warm, inviting and refreshingly down-to-earth. It is with great fondness that we shall always recall her brilliant, flashing smile; her joyous laughter; her sense of humor; her generosity of spirit, and of course her stunning beauty. Just as it is with profound gratitude that we shall forever cherish the memory of the stirring memorial recital she so lovingly performed at The Cooper Union's Great Hall in the wake of my father's untimely passing in 1992.

Love,
November 07, 2010

The last time I saw Ms. Verrett was at the Detroit Library when her book came out. Always elegant and gracious she signed my book. It is a moment that I will always treasure. I am deeply moved at her transition and have always been inspired by her huge body of work and remember seeing a performance of her as Delila ....utterly thrilling and earthy. She falls into the category of legend and will not be forgotten.

Shirley Verrett was the very first catalytic flame of artistry that is an overall part of who I am today. She was one of the first operatic voices I ever heard when I was 20 years old and saw the film "Aria" in 1988. Her singing of The Witch's aria from "Un Ballo In Maschera" still stands as my all time favorite aria from my all time favorite opera. Verrett's Ulrica intrigued me SO much, I couldn't fully relax until I had found and purchased the full recording of Verdi's Ballo in New Haven, CT which eventually led to me pursuing voice study which in turn led to me being an opera singer in my own right.

I met Ms. Verrett on a freezing February night after hearing her sing Delilah to Domingo's Sampson at the Met in 1989. After singing all night, she was incredibly warm and gracious, especially because there was a nice big overly long uncomfortable pause due to me losing the ability to speak upon approaching her. I literally was STUNNED in Shirley Verrett's presence - There she was in a streamlined black velvet evening gown with a mink mini vest draped over her shoulders and her hair completely pulled back into one solitary straight up spike with a diamond broach at the base of her head.

Absolutely Incomparable.

Addio, La Verrett. Moto, moto grazie
November 07, 2010
She lifted her sails high and traveled the seas greatly! Now she has entered into port to take her place in glory. We are blessed to have experienced her beauty, artistry, and grace. She lives on in our hearts, as do all those whom we love. Sincere condolences to the family.

November 06, 2010
I only met Ms. Verrett a few times, through musical connections here. She was such a lovely, gracious person. She made me get over my awe of the great musical talent she was, and just enjoy getting to know her.
November 06, 2010
A small story, but nevertheless an important one. George Shirley (my teacher) began teaching his lessons in her studio and I can truly say that her room inspired me and helped me grow as an artist. Just seeing Ms. Verrett's glamorous photos of her with every other imaginable opera legend is something that dozens of people would have loved to experience, and for artists, nothing is more important than inspiration. Rest in peace, Donna Shirley.
November 06, 2010
The sounds of heaven are even more beautiful now than they were the day before. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world. You have inspired many to follow in your footsteps and because of the struggles and sacrifices you had to make, their journey in the world of opera is that much easier today. My condolences to the family of Madame Verrett.

November 06, 2010
Right now I'm listening to her KAPP album of hymns, 'How Great Thou Art,' which she was kind enough to autograph for me one evening at Avery Fisher Hall. Her voice was a unique and beautiful gift which gave many people a lot of pleasure. I enjoyed most of all her album of duets with Montserrat Caballe, which turned me on to opera for the rest of my life. She's singing among the angels now.

My college voice teacher Carol Marty took me to see Shirley in concert in 1969. The first thing that struck me was her regal carriage as she walked on stage. She looked very tall. I was shocked when shaking her hand that she was much shorter than I. I was in awe of the beauty of her voice and her presentation of the recital.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Verrett when she judged a competition I took part in, in 1995. She was as beautiful, elegant and kind up close as she seemed from afar.

Her voice, of course, was a marvel, from top to bottom and back up to top. Her performances so centered, so fearless. What a gift to have had her in this world.
