Dear Anderson Family,
I know it's late but I just wanted to send my condolences. I never personally met Sparky but I grew up with stories from my Dad and Aunts of Carol babysitting them and how good of a friend my grandpa was with him. I know both my grandparents loved getting a Christmas card from him every year. One thing I'm sure of was my grandpa was there to greet him on the other side. Who knows maybe they're both up there playing a game of baseball.

I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY! I HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED HIM AS A MANAGER & THE BEST COACH!!I HAVE EVER KNOWN!!
November 04, 2011
To The Anderson Family,
I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to you during this difficult time. As a NY Yankees fan I always felt that the American league was superior to the National League. However, when Sparky Anderson and his "Big Red Machine" came busting through I realized that my thoughts were off base. Sparky managed all of these All-Stars and not one time have I ever read about any of those players saying something negative about Mr. Anderson. Of course, I never knew Sparky personally but I admired him greatly and loved to hear his interviews. He seemed like a great guy.

Sincerely,
Terrone of NC

When we discovered you were staying at the same hotel as our family and left an autograph request on your door, you could have just ignored us. Instead you made a memorable family trip even more unforgettable. Thank you for your kindness to fans, especially kids.

Sparky was a winner on the baseball field, and off the baseball field. He was a winner with his family, and with every life he touched. He is a winner today, as he celebrates eternity, along with Ernie Harwell, who got to heaven before Sparky to put together the welcoming committee, along with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...

November 07, 2010
A great manager but more important a very nice person. Several years ago I spent about 30 minutes talking baseball with Sparky. I was on a cruise and he was there with a Reds Fan club. Having lunch with a couple from the Reds group I told them I saw Sparky the prior day but did not want to bother him. The gentleman told me Sparky loves talking with people so the next time I saw Sparky I was able to have a great conversation with him. It was just before dinner and he was waiting for his wife. We talked about baseball, he was very modest about himself but praised his players and other great teams. A great baseball man but even more important a great person. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Sparky, you were the driver of the Big Red Machine. You transformed great individual players into a true team that, working together, built a great dynasty that gave Reds fans so many great times. You were such a decent, humble man as well. And I especially enjoyed your best quotes. I still remember you saying (about George Foster): "I call him the Destroyer because he is destruction personified". You'll always be the best. My condolences to your family.
November 06, 2010
Thank you Sparky for all the memories you and The Big Red Machine provided to me as a young boy in the Cincinnati area. I got to go to Riverfront five times to see you. I'll never forget it. One of the "GREATEST" managers that ever coached a baseball team..He had the knowledge to make teams better and to take them to better places in the standings.Took teams that the press said had not chances of winning and turned them into wiiners. He will be truly missed by everyone that watched baseball. My prayers go out to his family with loss of a loved one.
November 06, 2010
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Anderson family at this tragic time. Mr.Anderson was a great human being, a leader whom many a man followed with their every being. I would go to war with this man, as so many did. Baseball lost an ambassador in Mr. Anderson (Sparky), RIP Skipper!!, from the McNab family in Regina, Saskatchewan.
November 06, 2010
You will always be remembered as one of the greats. You were a class act, You loved the game.
November 06, 2010
Sparky Anderson will most certainly be missed by fans here in Southern California. His baseball highlights began as a high-school infielder at Dorsey High School in the early 1950s. I was a young student at Fairfax and remember Sparky at the City baseball Championships. Sparky had a gift for making other players better competitiors. And later coaching & leading the Reds & Tigers to World Series Championships. Inspiration and a winning way were his credo during his whole life.

Later after Sparky retired from baseball, I met him having breakfast in a Thousand Oaks restaurant. He was a true gentleman with a quick smile and loved talking baseball with everybody. You don't find those kind of personal values nowadays. He was one of a kind to his players & the fans.

My sympathy to his wife and family. May Sparky join the other great Managers like Walter Alston & Casey Stengle in baseball heaven. You will never be forgotten. RIP

I was a young New England woman when I first became aware of Sparky Anderson and the Red Machine. I always thought of Sparky as a role model for a manager that everyone could learn from whether managing a sport's team, a family,or classroom. It was his style of management that was so impressive. I continued to follow his career when he went to Detroit. He truly exemplified what baseball once was and should still be about. Sparky, I'll miss you.
November 05, 2010
As a young woman of 23, and not having much knowledge of baseball....my folks took me to Al Lopez Field in Tampa to witness The Big Red Machine. What an introduction to the sport!! I'll always remember that Spring Training and the feeling I got from seeing baseball's finest...coached by baseball's BEST!

Thank you, Sparky, for all you gave to us. Thank you, Anderson family, for letting us share Sparky all those years.

Rest in Peace, Sparky. We love you very much and will never forget you!

The day we brought our newborn son home from the hospital my brother took our Mother to see the Reds vs. Braves "Grand Opening Game" at the "NEW" Riverfront Stadium. They saw Hank Aaron hit the first ever homerun at the new stadium during that game. They returned home about 1:30 a.m. Mother was excited about her first grandson, but her rendezvous with Sparky and the BIG RED MACHINE was a special memory she mentioned to me many times over the years. She often went to sleep listening to the Reds via a transistor radio. "Thanks for the Memories" Sparky. RIP. You were loved by our family. Deepest condolences to the Anderson family.

Mrs. Anderson, Lee, Albert and Shirley, we were neighbors and I was Mr. Anderson's bat boy when he managed the team in Rock Hill, South Carolina many years ago. He was always my ride home after the games and was so kind to me. I ran into him at the Detroit airport the year they won the series and he was most gracious and asked about my family.
I will always cherish those special memories of a wonderful man and a wondeful time!! God Bless you!!

To the Anderson family - like so many other people in Ohio/America, you don't know me, but I grew up with the Big Red Machine and LOVED Sparky! He was truly one of the greatest figures in baseball and a wonderful human being. He will be missed so much! Besides baseball, I remember an episode of "WKRP in Cincinnati" that he starred in; he had some very powerful words to deliver there too, about life and work and a person's character. I pray his final days were peaceful, and that you, his family, can find comfort during this difficult time, in all the kind words the world will have to say about him. RIP Mr. Anderson; you were one of the GOOD GUYS!

To lose both Ernie Harwell and Sparky Anderson in the same season is a reminder to all baseball fans, and particularly Tiger fans, how lucky we were to have been expose to their examples of professionalism, greatness and humility over the years. When Sparky signed a baseball for me years ago, I told him that I would donate money to his favorite charity, to which he told me his favorite charity is kids. Truly a great man who will be long remembered.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Anderson numerous times during spring training in Tampa. He was always willing to stop and talk with the fans, give autographs, handshakes, and even an hug or two.
They talk about the respect that his players had for him, well the fans respected him also! He was a gentleman, a great role model, and a thrill to watch him lead His Big Red Machine.
Peace be with his family and friends.

November 05, 2010
My family and I were down in Florida on vacation years ago during Spring Training and thought it would be fun to go watch the Tigers practice. As we walked into the stadium, sitting immediately to our left was Sparky Anderson. My daughter, at the tender age of 3 piped up and said "Hi, Sparky!" He stopped what he was doing and walked over and spoke to her about baseball and asked her if she liked baseball. Being that precocious age she replied "no, my mom and dad made me come here!" He got the biggest kick out of that remark. That was the kind of man he was...kind, caring, friendly, loving. That was 26 years ago and we still talk about that wonderful memory. We will miss you my dear man. Baseball will never be the same without you. My sympathies to the entire Anderson family. RIP!

I was in Class A ball with the Reds when I first saw Sparky Anderson in Spring Training in 1968. I think he was manager of the Reds' AA affiliate and I remember him very clearly as a manager you would want to play for. Even though I only played two years in the Reds' farm system, [all] ballplayers have a connection, no matter how small and that spring training was my connection to Sparky Anderson.

I didn't have any more film, but that was ok, cause I got to meet you after the series was won for Detroit in 84. I watched that in Germany while in the Air Force.

November 04, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

November 04, 2010
When I heard the news that the Tigers had hired Sparky, I thought they had really done something right.
In 5 yrs., as promised, he brought a World Series championship to Detroit, something that hadn't happened for 16 years.
The teams he had with Cincy were some of my favorites, EVER.
So many Hall-Of-Famers came from those teams, as well as two of the most exciting World Series contests one could ever witness.
To his family, friends, formers players, and the rest of baseball:
Don't mourn his death!!! Celebrate his life!! Sure, we are sad for the lack of his visible presence, but, his spirit lives on.
Now he's part of the universe.
May the love of God sustain you at this most grievous time.

November 04, 2010
So sorry to lose a great man who enjoyed
baseball. I remember when my late brother
was in the hospital in Cincinnati Ohio in
1977 he had leukemia, and my brother was
a big fan of Sparky. His dream was to meet Sparky when he was in the hospital
but he was so sick at the time. But Sparky took the time out and went to visit my brother, and gave him a team picture of the Reds and he signed for my brother and that really made his day. Sadly I lost my brother with the
battle of leukemia not long after Sparky had visited him. But to this day I still have the autographed team
picture that Sparky did for my brother.
God Bless you Sparky and my prayers are
with the family. Sparky you were a true
manager for the Reds Team. Rest in Peace.

When I was a young man of 18/19 years old, I worked at Thrifty Drug Store in Thousand Oaks CA. One of my coworkers was a sweet little lady name Mrs. Anderson. I always loved working with her because she was always so nice to customers.

I remember she always needed to make sure that she bought some chewing tobacco for her husband, George.

Sometimes George would pick Mrs Anderson up from work and she would say "Goodbye everyone...George is here" One day I noticed that Mrs Anderson was leaving work and she jumped into a red VW Scirocco that I recognized as the same one that the great Sparky Anderson drove around Thousand Oaks. At that moment I realized that Mrs Anderson was Mrs. "SPARKY" Anderson!!!

I could hardly contain myself the next day and I remember say "Mrs Anderson you never tod me that you were Mrs SPARKY Anderson!!!" She was always so low key and assumed that nobody would really care that her longtime husband and sweetheart was anything more than "George." Well, as a long time fan of baseball...I HAD to meet the great Sparky Anderson and told Mrs Anderson as much. A couple days later, she told me that George would be coming to pick her up today and he said that he would come in the store to meet me.

Well, sure enough a couple days later the meeting I was anticipating happened and I met Mr. Anderson. Sparky Anderson, to my suprise and relief was as low key as Mrs Anderson. Mr Anderson was more concerned about people recognizing him and that it might negatively affect Mrs Anderson's work place.

I made a friend that day in Mr. Anderson, and when the Detroit Tigers were in town to play the Angels, I would sit in box seats on the visitor's side and cheer for my freind Sparky's team.

Thank you Mr. Anderson...you will be missed.
November 04, 2010

November 04, 2010
I'm so sorry to hear this. My condolences to Sparky's family. Some of my very fondest childhood memories are of my father, a HUGE baseball fan and military guy, surprising me by coming to my elementary school to pick me up early. When he had on his Reds cap, I knew we would be going to Al Lopez park to see the Reds during spring training here in Tampa. Sparky always had time to sign autographs and pose for pictures with this little tomgirl, especially when he found out we had the same last name. He was truly a great gentleman, and his loss is felt by all.
November 04, 2010
God Speed Sparky.
November 04, 2010

November 04, 2010
God speed, Mr. Anderson. You will always be a great in my book! R.I.P.
November 04, 2010
Sparky Anderson was a great man. Living in Thousand Oaks for the past thirty years, I knew him as a very cordial and warm neighbor whom I saw at church on Sunday and who was always available to help support projects. He was famous in the world of sports, but he was universally loved for his humble attitudes and warmth to everyone in our city. This is a sad day because we are less for the passing of our friend, Sparky Anderson.
November 04, 2010
I remember meeting Sparky in 1973,I was a teenager and loved the Reds, he gave me his autograph and we had a picture taken. I saw him again in Lakeland with the Tigers, this time I had my son with me. I took the picture from the 70's and the autographs to show him. We laughed, I had gotten older, not him. He did autographs for my son and again we did pictures. He told my son that he always remembered seeing me every year on opening day in Cincy. What a remarkable man and such an honor to have had the chance to be in his presence. Sparky, you always were and always will be a class act.
November 04, 2010
God Bless you Sparky, I developed an interest in baseball as a young girl because of you and the Big Red Machine. RIP
November 04, 2010
So sad. I loved Sparky's smile and humility, always giving credit to the other people around him. Seemed -- from any interviews I saw him do -- that he was a funny guy, too. Maybe even a little Yogi Berra-like with his quotes!

RIP, Sparky, and may God comfort your family and friends. Very sad day in Reds history. :(
November 04, 2010
My condolences to Sparky's family. He was an excellent manager and a truly wonderful person, one who was respected by the players and fans alike. Rest in peace Sparky knowing that you are in your own Field of Dreams.
November 04, 2010

November 04, 2010
The whole world is a little darker now that the "Main Spark" is gone. We'll miss you Sparky.
November 04, 2010
My sympathies. He was a part of providing good moments when he managed the Reds.
November 04, 2010
What a great all-time baseball manager who will go down in the baseball history books. Sparky is the reason why I chose to follow the Reds and have been since the "Big Red Machine" year in 1975. There are so many "GREAT ONES" who are already missing him today and they are: Morgan, Foster, Bench, Rose, and etc, who will keep Sparky in their hearts forever. I sure hope this upocoming Reds 2012 season will honor Sparky in some way, for example, playing the season in his memory, choose a plaque or a statue and a full-size picture of him placed near the outfield so the players can go up to touch him for good luck before every home game starts. We certainly know that Sparky will have the best seat in the house looking down at the Reds team rooting us on for another great season and making it all the way to the World Series.

Brenda Stapleton, Columbus, Ohio
November 04, 2010
