John and I rode with Steve and his sister Angela along with a few others on his last Pack Trip into Mexico, about two weeks before he suffer his first stroke. I'd loved Steve's music and lyrics since the 70's. I watched him on Austin City Limits when he crashed Willies performance and even recorded it.

Our ride with Steve was everything I'd hoped it to be, even better--I became friends with his sister Angela and my heart goes out to her-- I know how close they were.

I'll miss you Steve, but your music will always be playing in my mind if not in the car. Dear Darcie was won of my favorites--he shared his feelings and love to his daughter in words he put to music.

Love to Angela, Darcie, and all who loved Steve, who are living this loss up close. May time help lessen you pain.

I met Steve in Denver, at the Sign of the Tarot coffee house. He was with "Dangerous" Dan McCrimmon and they played for tips. Soon, the line to get into the tiny coffee house was around the block. He reconnected country with folk and his music was incredible. I hope to join you smiling at God from the top of the hill someday, Steve. God bless you and thanks for the fantastic music.

I'll never forget driving from Red River to Denver with Rick and Ray Wylie and Wayne to the Steven Stills, Steve Fromholtz show at that overgrown "barn", and your then new tune,"Times were short from....", which chronicled one of Still's proclivities. The greatest compliment to your prodigious talent was that other musicians loved your work. Thanks for making us laugh a lot and cry some too. We'll miss you. George, "the Wolfman" Adams.
February 17, 2014
Sorry to hear about your loss. James 4:8 says draw close to God and he will draw close to you.
February 15, 2014
I enjoyed Steve's friendship over the years. I first saw him sing at Starlight theater in Terlingua 1990's. I hope someone got the word to Angie. He will be missed. My condolences go out to his family. R.I.P Gil & June Mason

Thanks for all the wonderful memories and know that Texas is praying for your family and feeling their lost. Take care Mr Puppy Dog Eyes you stole our hearts Steven and we will all be better just for knowing you and having shared a moment in time with you.

Stephen gave me a lot a great support when I first moved to Austin in 1976 including putting me on on of his shows at the Armadillo. I'm eternally grateful and I share your grief--

What a warm magnetic prescence Steve shared. I was a drink slinger at Castle Creek back in the old days, saw Everbody. So treasure the memories of his magnificent songs and his way of wrapping the audience in his spell. A great great spinner of tales, a lovely man. God rest his soul and live to family and friends
January 30, 2014
Please accept my condolences for the loss of your loved one. During times of grief, allow God to comfort you and your family for he truly understands what you are going through. (Psalms 72:12-14)
January 30, 2014
I fell for Steven Fromholz after listening to the Frummox album in about 1973. I spent many years "stalking Steven in the nicest possible way" as I told him the last time I was fortunate enough to visit with him a few years back. By stalking I meant driving insane distances to hear him perform any time I was able. Such a brilliant talent and genuine treasure. Indeed "till we meet again". I know he's writing songs about the human condition and bringing even more joy to heaven. Smile down on us Steve. With love, Susan
January 30, 2014
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
January 30, 2014
How I wish I had digital photos of the shows Steven and I performed together, with him in tux and even doing dance routines. He was so elegant, and could sing a harmony to a song he'd never heard in his life. I shall miss his larger-than-life presence. My deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved him.
January 29, 2014
My thoughts are with your family in your loss, which many of us feel as well. When I was about 15 in 1973 I heard Texas Trilogy and it literally changed my life. That song opened the world of literate singer songwriters to me, from Texas and beyond. It was a gift from Steve I still treasure over 40 years later. We saw him many times at Poor Davids over the years. He could make you laugh, cry, and everything in between in a 45 minute set. I am sure he is doing that in Heaven even now.
January 29, 2014
I saw Steve back in the mid-70's at the Rubaiyat Club in Dallas and have never forgotten it. He was truly a unique artist and I will always remember him.

I will miss listening to Steve (and Dan) and the Checkered flag I owned with Allen and Art. He was truly a poet of Texas. BIG hat.

Thank you Steve.
January 25, 2014

January 25, 2014
So sad to lose such a great talent and great guy.
First saw him opening for Steve Stills in 1972 in Berkeley, Ca.
Hung out with him in Austin a bit, what a lovely time and lasting memory.

Carry on from above, RIP

Thank you for touching my life through your words & music. My favorite song was and remains. "No Regrets". I want them to play it when my time comes. Damn, we're sure gonna miss you and that big Fromholz smile. But then, you have people to meet and old friends to catch up on. Godspeed friend.

January 22, 2014
Graduated Temple High School and saw Steve perform many times in the '70s. Rediscovered his music about 10 years ago and bought LPs. But his interaction with a live audience is the best memory.
January 22, 2014
We'll all miss you. You were a fine neighbor and friend. There will not be another like you my friend.
January 22, 2014
I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Please find peace and comfort in Psalms 65:2.
January 22, 2014
What a loss. Having also grown up in Bosque County, I feel Texas Trilogy was to Texas Music as The Last Picture Show was to Texas film. Both captured the essence of coming of age in rural Texas. Steve and I would share our memories of Meridian, Clifton, Morgan and Kopperl during the times I would see him perform. We are fortunate to have his gift of music as we mourn his loss. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
January 22, 2014
im sorry for your lost loved one
January 22, 2014
Steve, old friend, adios. You left too soon, but you created more memories than any ten of us.
January 22, 2014
Tamara and I send our love and prayers to you Susan, and to Darcie and Felicity and Kevin and to all of Steven's family. My visit w Susan and Steven at the ranch just a month ago was filled w his hilarious and quick wit, and kind heart. He loved watching the deer come in at sunset. His voice IS Texas. And his words our history. With great love and respect to a giant of Texas. Bye, Steven. Your spirit and inspiration lives on.
January 22, 2014
You were a great influence in my life and I'm grateful for every moment I had the priveledge to spend with you. RIP Steve
January 22, 2014
My heartfelt condolences to Angela at this tragic time. Steven and I were cousins and although we never lived in Kopperl, we both spent several summers there visiting our kin. I last saw him at my father's funeral in Kopperl in 2002. How I wish I had had opportunities to see Steven more often — but at times like this we all say things like that, don't we? Heaven's a might better now that Steven's there. Love to Angela and Steven's daughters.
January 22, 2014
We were shocked to hear of this. We loved hearing you sing. Enjoyed the basketball games at Bedichek when Felicity and Susan played on the girl's team. First saw you at Spamarama when it was at the Cedar Door in 1989. May you rest in peace!
January 22, 2014
So sorry for your loss. The people of Texas especially have lost a legend.

My prayers are with your family and close friends, and all of us who remember the "old days" at the coffee houses in Dallas. Your music and your memory will live on in our hearts and minds, and will be passed on to new generations. January 21, 2014
I hope Steve is hanging out with my x BW Stevenson making music we wish we could hear!
January 21, 2014
These words and thoughts describe his life to us: Inspiring, influential, hard to keep up with in the 1970's and 1980's, easy to admire, poetically perfect, musically incomparable, pure Texan, hard to dislike, and courageous to the core. We were forever changed when we first saw him and Dan perform in 1969 in Austin.
Dave Henry and Dan Burke
January 21, 2014
So terrible to hear of Steve's tragic death, and sadder still to know it was on that beautiful ranch with you, Susan. I will never forget visiting there back in the 90s -- you were an inspiration. May peace, love, and small comforts be with you in this sad time.

January 21, 2014
real sorry to hear this, years ago I remember Steve coming into Volvo dealer to have his car serviced, those were some great days in Austin back then where one could catch all these great Texas songwriter/singers. was listening to Steve and guys like Gary P. Nunn the other day, my prayers go out to Fromholz family.
January 21, 2014
My friend Sylvia Carter turned me on to Frummox several decades ago. Steve Fromholtz's Texas Trilogy songs are among my favorites, wonderfully evocative songs about small-town life in the Lone Star State. I was very pleased to find the three songs covered by Lyle Lovett on his "Step Inside This House" CD, a tribute to his favorite Texas songwriters.
January 21, 2014
Offering my deepest condolences to Mr Fromholz family. May God strengthen you at this difficult time.
January 21, 2014
...gone on the road; crossed that bridge cross the river wide. Trust the load is lightened- and know that you will truly be missed on this side.

A great poet and songwriter. We are all a bit better because of his talents. God speed Steven.
January 21, 2014
I have enjoyed your music since I first heard you when you were touring with Stills. And were it not for you, I would never have met my late wife. We ended up sitting by each other at one of your shows. For the music and Kathy, I thank you.
January 21, 2014
The good Lord is taking all angels away...may he continue to soar the skies...in the midst of all the other angels, watchful eyes...for what the lord has in store is a great Suprise...

Big talent and big heart. I only met him once, at a birthday party Angie invited me to. Angie, I know there is a big hole in your heart and world right now. I think of you often but have lost track. My sincere condolences and prayers are for you and the rest of the family.
January 21, 2014
May the "peace of God" be with you to give you comfort at this time. Phillipians 4:6.
January 21, 2014
It was my first and only Rio Grande rafting trip. Fromholz and Catfish were our boatmen. We landed on a sandbar late in the day to camp. Mike made supper and pineapple upside down cake in a Dutch oven. Fromholz, Fletcher and I played and sang after dessert. Looking up, there were so many stars, so much laughter, and so much peace. Steve's resonant poetry echoes down Santa Eleña Canyon still.
January 21, 2014
My condolences to the family, may God be your stronghold and refugee in this time of distress.
January 21, 2014
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
January 21, 2014
So sorry to learn of the tragic accident. At this sorrowful time, please find solace in God's word. It gives us hope. You will be reunited in paradise. Psalms 37:29

January 21, 2014
In the early '70s, Mr. Fromholz's masterpiece Texas Trilogy gave me and my father a precious gift: something to mutually admire and enjoy at a time when he and I could agree on almost nothing else. We listened to it together many times and eventually made peace with each other. Thank you, sir. You will be missed.
January 21, 2014
January 21, 2014
So sad that you are gone. Your talent was appreciated. You have left us your songs. You were a great songwriter. You will always be missed. God's Blessings of peace to your family and friends. R.I.P.
January 21, 2014
Steven was an oarsman and guide on our wedding raft trip in Big Bend...a couple decades ago...
And back in the 70's, my being an unexposed yankee from Chicago...he, along with Butch (who was also on that trip), Joe and Jimme Dale, made me realize long ago that there was another genuinely and equally beautiful American music style besides Blues and Jazz...
What a wonderful and endearing man. I will miss him and his bears...
January 20, 2014
wow-still having a hard time coping with this, old buddy-I got to know Steve well back in the mid 70s-his sister Angie and I sang together in several bands in Austin-I was always so impressed by the way you could handle yourself on stage with any crowd-and some of the stories I could tell about going on road trips with you! This just seems all so surreal-the music community has lost one of the true pioneers-my heart and prayers go out to your family Steve, especially Angela-I know this is going to be very hard for her. Heaven's choir just added a beautiful baritone voice to the mix-see you on the other side my friend!
January 20, 2014
You will be missed and thought of often by the Kempf family. You have touched our lives.
January 20, 2014
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
January 20, 2014
I really enjoyed Steven's great songs, and his deep, rich voice.
I had a nice talk with him at my music store job, about 4
years ago.
I'll never forget him.
January 20, 2014
The Frummox album was one thing my ex and I struggled over when we divided the property way back when. Great writing, great voice and a very funny guy.
January 20, 2014
to paraphrase the man in the big hat...we'll drink to the cowboys, dead or dyin'. we'll drink to your compadres and you...
January 20, 2014
Always loved to listen to his songs. A true Texas treasure and we will miss him.
January 20, 2014
Shared a urinal at the Surf Club Corpus Christi. He never missed a beat. Beautiful whacked out soul. As single dad his Dear Darcie is the most dead on capture of the feelings of distance, it helps me grieve every time I sing it to myself. Was 15 seeing him and Dan at the Rubyat. He stomped the terra. Going to sleep sad tonite. God's mercy on you Fromholz.
January 20, 2014
I've treasured my Frummox album since I was 15 and Steven autographed it for me a couple years ago at Mike Blakely's ranch. I'm so happy I got to meet him but so sad he's gone. Rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his beloved family.
January 20, 2014
Many great memories of the Checkered Flag. Thank you!
God gave us clouds that we may better appreciate the light.
January 20, 2014
My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Fromholz's friends and family. I never knew him, but I loved his music from the first time I heard his records in the 1970's. A great loss.
January 20, 2014
My sympathy to the family. May almighty God comfort the family.
January 20, 2014
RIP to my favorite songwriter of all time. When I heard the album Frummox way back in 1970, I was instantly converted from a rock music fan to a Texas songwriter fan. The Texas Trilogy did it. And Dear Darcy has always been a song I could relate to in my personal life. To Darcy and the rest of Steven's family, I give my sincere condolences. I was so sorry to hear that Steven was taken from us so early. He was a man with a heart of gold!
January 20, 2014
I first heard Steven's "Texas Trilogy" at boarding school in the mid '70s Decades later, late '90s, I had quite the personal moment with the man himself. I'd stopped at the Driskill Hotel bar in Austin after work for a drink. It was quiet, only one guy sitting at the bar, Fromholz, whom I recognized but had never met. Acting nonchalant, I sat at a neighboring stool and ordered. I wanted to express my longtime appreciation, but had to think about how. Finally, I decided to just look at him and quote from one of his own songs. I turned in his direction, caught his eye, and said simply, "Six o'clock silence of a new day beginning is heard in the small Texas town."

Without missing a beat, he tipped his glass toward me and replied, "Hell of an opening line, ain't it?"

Yes it is, and we ended up having a fine old time talking about all kinds of stuff. I'll never forget it. My sincere condolences to his daughters, his grandchildren and the extended family.
January 20, 2014
I didn't know you Steve, but we spent many hours together. Your songs shaped the course of my musical life and I will always be a fan.
January 20, 2014
A great and too little sung Texas singer-songwriter. Gone too soon but left a legacy.

Sorry for your loss.-Eccles.9:11
January 20, 2014
To Sis and the rest of Steven's family, I send my prayers and hearfelt condolences. You and the world have lost a tremendous talent, and we have lost a beautiful soul. It was a privilege to get to know him when I played in "Bosque County, Texas", and to carry on the friendship. His talent and his warmth and gentlemanly manner were so refreshing in today's world. We love you Steven and will miss you sorely, but I know Heaven is ringing with your music.
January 20, 2014
My sincere condolences to the family and friends. May the God who supplies endurance and comfort be with you in the days ahead-Romans 15:5. E.D. Park Forest, IL.
January 20, 2014
To the family you will be in my thoughts and prayers along with a crowd of others. My favorite time I saw Steven was at the Sons of Herman Hall in Dallas. He was gratious and charming. I will miss his wonderful shows!
January 20, 2014
Viva la Terlingua, Stephen. I will always remember the Christmas party and the look on Tracy's face when I walked into the room and sat down with you and Angie. I miss sitting down at the front of the Starlight cracking jokes till I sobered up. Going down the Rio Grand on New Years was the best time, I'll miss your smile and your stories and how you lit up that old ghost town. Thanks for being a part of my life

January 20, 2014
We will miss you, Steve. Have fun up there with the Wolverillos and Uncle Burrgh.

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I had not seen him for many years but I never forgot him. I was the opening act for many of his shows in the Austin area in the early 70's and he taught me so much just by watching him onstage. He was one of the best and he had a huge influence on my development as a writer and artist. He touched so many lives. Thank you Steve. May you rest in peace. You will be missed.

First met Steve in 1973 at East Texas Folk festival. Followed him for over forty years. Texas lost a music legend yesterday and I am very grateful to have known him.
Steve, please rest easy and say hello to BW and Rusty in heaven. Your music and stories will live within my heart forever

I was at home on Hartford St. in Houston listening to KPFT the first time I heard Texas Trilogy. It was about 1973. Took another 10 years to find the album Frummox. It's digitized now. Loved his voice. It was the voice of Texas. So long, Steven. Thanks for the memories.

So sad to hear the news about Steve. Yes, he was Steve to his classmates. I last saw Steve 5 years ago at the 45th class reunion of the DHS class of '63. He will be missed. May God grant his family comfort and peace during this very difficult time. Ruth (Martin) Brown, class of '63, Denton High School.

"Texas Trilogy", the album, is the one I always select when I yearn for the comfort of days, and people, gone by. Had the great pleasure of knowing Steven and many of the people of Kopperl that he wrote/sang about as only he could. Have been friends with Sis (Angela)for almost a lifetime. And, Sis, what doesn't kill us surely must make us stronger, by God's grace. My thoughts are of the good times and comfort received from memories and music; my prayers for all of you are pretty much the same, as well as knowing the comfort of the only one who can really bring healing to our sorrows. God bless.

Some of the best times of my life were spent sitting by a river listening to Steve sing and enjoying his company. He will be missed.

As nothing more than an audience member/high schooler at the Cricket Club, Castle Creek and Alliance Wagonyard, Fromholz touched my life with his songs and his huge personality. When I met him much later, I never let on how in awe of his talent I had always been -- well, I was, even then. My condolences to his family and to those who knew him much better than I. If my feeling of loss is any indication, yours must be enormous. If possible, take some comfort in knowing that he left a permanent legacy.

My heart felt condolances to the Fromholz family and the music community.

I'll always remember Steven for his wit, wisdom, and for the courage he showed getting back on the horse after the stroke hit him so hard some years ago, some of my favorite performances of his were in more recent years. He even came to the middle school where I was principal at the time and spoke to 7th graders about writing songs and poetry. He played Beethoven on a banjo for them that day--I didn't even know he could play banjo! And of course, there's the songs -- all those songs. God Bless you, Steven -- and my deepest sympathies to all of his family.

Saw Steven several times over the years. "I'd Have To Be Crazy" is one of my favorite songs!! And love it when he sings his part right before Willie in the midst of the song.
Met him and he signed my guitar alongside with other greats: Willie, George Jones, Merle, Kris, David Allan Coe, Billy Joe Shaver. and REK.
Last saw him play at the Book Festival at the Capitol building. Will never forget his explanation of the new meaning to his song "Bears".
January 20, 2014
Saw Steven at the Broken Spoke years ago. His voice and song poetry was truly unique. I heard "He gave her a ring" when he sang it on the Sam and Bob Show on KVET and loved it. I emailed Steve for the cords, which he sent me. I sang the song several times on cruise ships when they had passenger "lack of talent night." The audience often got a big kick out of it and even asked me for the words. I always gave him the credit for the song and send my condolences to his family.
There are plenty of his wonderful performances on YouTube and his music will live on in digital eternity. I sure will never forget him.
