I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Senator Strom. He was the icon of constituancy service and compassion. He came to my rescue on several occassions and I will never forget his kindness and personal touch in time of need. He was a true American patriot who loved and was proud of his state of South Carolina. May God's blessings be with all of his loved ones and may they never forget his contribution.

Strom Thurmond was actually a distant cousin of mine, but I actually had only seen him a few times in my life. He was a wonderful and caring man. Senator Thurmond always called when my family had a death, wedding, birth, etc. I was always amazed how he kept up with all of those things. I have read numerous stories these past few days about how helpful and kind he was to so many people. He will be missed terribly by the people of South Carolina.
July 02, 2003
I first met Sen. Strom Thurmond when I was about 7 or 8 yrs. old and he was going from house to house asking for votes and I was in the yard and he shook my hand and asked to speak to my parents. I never realized that I too would be voting for this Great Man. Thanks for all that he did for South Carolina and our people.

A man of politics before I was born
but knew he wanted to serve the people of his beloved homestate, South Carolina.

Through the troubles and turmoils, he proved he was a man who could change his beliefs and be open to new ideas to better serve the people he represented, and he represented them in a grand fashion.

No matter the color, background, ethnic group he had time for all and enjoyed the fellowship with his South Carolina friends.

Never commmitted to anything he didn't follow though. A man of his word and make it his bond.

Just a few loving memories of our South Carolina Friend as there are not enough pages to list them all.

Though you may no longer be with us, your smiling face, your goodwill, and your committment to your beloved state will continue to live through our memories of you.

Goodbye my South Carolina Friend.

June 29, 2003
God has called home another faithful servant. Edgefield, South Carolina and the United States have lost a man with a heart of compassion.

Today, my 84 year old mother related to me how Strom Thurmond as a young man would deliver Christmas packages to the less fortunate of Edgefield.

Strom Thurmond also was a cousin to my maternal grandmother and also a cousin to my paternal grandfather.

One of the high points of my life was in May of 1962 when as a member of the first graduating class of Strom Thurmond High School got to meet him for a luncheon with the Class of 1962 in Washington. And, I was very fortunate to have been at the table next to him.

June 29, 2003
I first met Strom Thurmond in Greenville, S.C. We were at a National Guard convention. He was on the elevator with my friend and I. We talked all the way down to the lobby. He told me to tell the people of Edgefield hello. I saw him so many times after that at parades, conventions, where I worked at United Defense in Aiken, S. C. and he even came by the store we owned in Trenton, S. C. to get gas. He never forgot where he came from. My husband worked in Washington at the Pentagon for a while and traveled to Washington several other times. He and some other members of the National Guard always visited Strom's office. He always loved for anyone from South Carolina to visit. He will be missed. I am especially saddened and will always remember his passing because he passed away on my birthday. My husband(a distant cousin of Thurmond) and I extend our sympathy to his family.
June 29, 2003
We are pleased to acknowledge the many times you responded to our needs, and to your being an excellent representative for the people of SC. Thank You and your wonderful family.
June 29, 2003
Senator Thurmond had a very personal affect on my family. He chose my son MIchael to participate in the Sony student abroad program in Japan the summer of 1996. Michael also told of his speech at a youth camp he attended when Senator Thurmond advised that the young people read every day. Michael died in June of 2001 and I am grateful for the memories that we have that Senator Thurmond helped to make happen. My family will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

June 28, 2003
thanks for giving so much of your time to the people you loved
June 28, 2003
In discussing Senator Thurmond----
where do I begin?
As a young boy growing up in Augusta, when this war hero from nearby Edgefield was elected Govenor, through his record election as the only write-in winner in a U. S. Senate race, to my meeting him as a Cadet at a football game of The Citadel where he was a guest of the President,
General Mark Clark, to his presence as the author of the "Southern Strategy" --- and lastly, on ongoing
love and respect for perhaps one of the very few individuals, who said and meant the very same things that he said in both the U.S. Senate and in Aiken, S.C..
God be with his family in this time.
I am certain that the Senator is with God.
Thank you Strom --- always my hero.
June 28, 2003
Thank you for your many kindnesses on behalf of our state and my family. Rest in peace.
June 28, 2003
Three times I asked the Senator for assistance with breaking through the government buracracy. He accomplished in days what I had tried for months and in one case four years to fix. He lead a life like no other. Celebrate his time on earth. May God bless you all.

You can not judge a man's actions by the times he lived in. Strom was one of the greatest politicians this nation has seen in the past century. His love for this country was apparent in his policies and his career. It is hard to imgaine an America without him in it. My heart goes out to his family. He had a great run.

What can I say that has not all ready been written about Senator Thurmond.
When I was small girl growing up in Aiken county, my father was a deputy sheriff for the county and he would be asked to pick up the Senator from the airport. He never forgot my father and years later when he came to our church in North Augusta for a visit. He saw my father after many years and called him by name and remembered their times together. I thought this was very impressive. Knowing how many people he has known in his life.

He has truly left his footprints not only the sands of time, but also on hearts of the people.

Also, Dr. Billy Thurmond was my doctor for a few years when he first started practising medicine in North Augusta.

We will miss you Sentor Thurmond!

Mrs. Thurmond, Julie, Strom Jr, and Paul, Senator Thurmond was so very precious to all of us in the state of South Carolina and especially Edgefield County. His compassion and quick wit put everyone at ease that ever met him. He made everyone feel welcome. He will trully be missed. I am so glad that he had each of you. You all made his life brighter through the years. When he spoke of his family, the sparkle in his eyes lit up like the stars in the sky...he just gleamed when he spoke of all of you. My heart goes out to you. I know he was 100 and that was a long life, but his presence was so much a part of this nation, he will be missed everywhere and especially in your homes. He will always be a part of us all as we fondly remember the things he said through the years and remember that wonderful smile that brightened our days, too. God bless you all. My prayers & thoughts to the family of Sen Thurmond. I'm from S.C. orginally & grew up knowing him as the Senator. I would always listen to the news to keep up on all that was going on. He had a fruitful life that went on for a long time. Just to retire in January after such a long term---what a guy. now, he can be upstairs & handle things on that end!!! God be with the whole family.
Respectfully,

To the Family and friends of Sen. Strom Thurmond. This comes from a heavy heart as many in the state and nation do have on this day. My Family and I feel a strong bond to this wonderful strong human being due to the fact our blood run the same. I was born a Thurmond in WVa in 1961. I was told over the years of this great man and watched his power in Law and the Goverment over the years. I took ribbing and teasing over the years due to his long life span, but would always say in return, "Don't you wish it was you"? I for one am very proud to have shared my 40 some years knowing of this man. Plus being a distant relative of the Thurmond generation. The Thurmond generation is a very proud and strong generation and "YOU" will never be forgotten.....In public or in our hearts. Love and Godspeed to you Uncle Strom..........Delilah

My family will always be thankful for the help Sen. Thurmond gave my
Father in 1960 getting his Social Security started. He had been turned down, even though he was paralized on his left side and could not talk, due to a severe stroke. I know there are many families that share the same story.
Sen. Thurmond was always there in your time of need, never to busy to give that helping hand to a family in distress.
Aiken County and the entire country will certainly miss Strom Thurmond.
