Happy Birthday Jim! R.I.P.
My deepest sympathy to you, your children, and your extended family and friends. I was very saddened to learn of his passing, but my sorrow is tempered somewhat by fond memories of Jim, in Swansea, so many years ago.
I was raised there in the 1940s and 1950s and remember Jim (at that time he was "Jimmy" and I was "Lonny") with great affection and fondness. We were both members of the extended Bliss family, which (as you know) held reunions every Labor Day. He was always cheerful and supportive, and I considered him a great role model (and still do). I remember so clearly sitting with him in South Swansea, eating the traditional chicken salad, baked beans, and corn, and discussing topics such as what it was like to attend college (he got there first) and different models of cars and so many other topics.
Years later, I was pleased to connect with Jim and meet you at the reunion in Fall River. We picked up a conversation about old Packards where we had left off decades before!
Based on my recollections of Jim as a child and young man it never surprised me that he became a highly successful businessman and a true leader for so many worthwhile charitable and civic causes.
His passing is a major loss to his family, and to the community.
I just recently learned of Mr. Waring's passing and extend my sincere condolences.
Although encounters with him were few and brief, I found his enthusiasm and determination most admirable and enjoyable. In particular, I fondly recall "May I share an Observation". As a man of varied and innumerable travails, he observed much and had much to share. May he rest in peace.
Dear Liz and family,
I was sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He ws a wonderful man who made my father enjoy many sports and other activities during his lifetime. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time, but the wonderful memories will remain forever.
Our deepest sympathy extends to the entire Waring family. You are continuously in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Jim was a very thoughtful man and an inspiration to all.
Andrea & Brad Bibeau & family
Dear jay and the Waring family-
your Father was an exceptional man. It was a pleasure to know him through the years and he will be missed! You and your family are in our prayers.
Jay, on behalf of the entire Gendron family I would like to express our deepest condolences on the passing of your father. He was a great man and an incredible inspiration to all of us in funeral service. We will continue to keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.
To the Waring Family,
Jim is such a special man. I learned a great deal from him and through him, learned about myself. He gave so much of himself and impacted so many lives. He is missed.
Nancy (Hartley) Weaver Cassidy
Christine, I am so sorry for your loss. I am thinking of you.
I was saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. Mr. Waring (as I new him) was a man I had much respect for. He was always gracious and forever professional. The "Funeral Service" Industry has lost one of a kind. His presence will be very difficult to replace.
Please give my condolences to your family. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.
Mark A. Tauro
The arrival of Jim's obituary certainly put a pall of sadness on my mind.
I still can't believe the powerful friend, intellect, orator and diplomat has moved up to a new planet.
Joan and I extend our prayers with love to you and your dear family.
May God forever rest Jim's soul and watch over each of you.
Joe and Joan McCracken
Dear Liz, Christine, Jay and the entire Waring family,
Betsy and I, our kids and our parents, and even their parents have all had such a wonderful relationship with Jim and your family over the years that it would be hard to put so many feelings from so many people into appropriate and adequate words, but I will try to share just a few from my point of view.
We echo the many kind words which were so perfectly used at the service, by you and by those who also loved and admired Jim. It was a fabulous and dignified tribute you should be proud to have been able to deliver for him.
Jim had such a profound impact on our community and on the success of all his friends whom he chose to support, as well as on all those who relied on him to make the grief process a natural, simple and successful one. He was certainly a professional. To merely skim the surface, I'd say we all appreciated Jim for his ability to make the grieving process so much easier, we admired Jim for his achievements and enthusiasm, and we loved him for his caring, his candor, his humor and his zest for life.
In recalling some of my fond personal memories, I can't help but grin to remember his off the cuff remarks (or Sumnersisms) heard at parties in Dick's barn, at dinners in Laguna, or even from the back of the car on the way to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, or en route to Foxboro or Fenway. Although I cannot "verify his vociferous vocabulary"... his explanation of the self-prescribed "HalfaDiet" was priceless. Our sons enjoyed him writing off a 2.5 hour snorefest in the back seat with "Gee, I must have dozed off there for a minute". I can assure you I will never hear the word "nightcap" again without thinking of Jim...he wanted to enjoy good times with his friends for as long as they could last.
We were honored to be included in your once-in-a-millenium New Years Eve celebration chez Waring, and one of many who he generously invited to opening day. I enjoyed tailgating and cheering in the stands with Jim at Harvard.
Besides encouraging their success, Jim was vigorous in standing up for his friends, one of many qualities I take away from having the pleasure of knowing him. He got to the point, and was convincing.
Betsy and I, our entire family and especially Dick and Betty will miss Jim very much, and we know you will miss him so much more.
It would be very easy to be sad at such a time, but we are happy to have known him as well as we did, and cherish so many fun times with him.
He lived a tremendous life!
Jay, I am very sorry for your families loss. From Randy Z. & staff
I had the good fortune to meet Jim many years ago when I supervised the construction of the beautiful addition to the Cherry Place location. He was always a joy to deal with. He made me feel as if I were one of the family. He will be sorely missed. My Condolences and Prayers are with you.
I heard there was a guy who bought the funeral parlor near Fenway Park so he wouldn't be late for any game. When we finally met, I didn't have the nerve to ask if he was the guy. We talked about music and baseball. I didn't think he would remember me, but out of the blue came a letter saying he liked the baseball book I wrote. It was more moving than any fan letter you could imagine.
To The Waring Family,
My day was brightened many times over the years when I'd get an unexpected note from Mr. Waring about a significant milestone or accomplishment in my life. While Mr. Waring was clearly successful in the 'big' things in his life, he definitely paid attention to the 'little' things as well.
May he rest in peace.
I was so sorry to learn of your father's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of loss.
People's Funeral Chapel
Jim is a man who will be sorely missed by more people in more places that I can even imagine. He touched so many lives. He has helped our family professionally too many times over the years, for which I will always be grateful. But it is his warmth, friendship, and wonderful personality that I will remember, treasure, and miss the most. I wish I could be there to help you and your family as Jim was there for me and mine, and yet here I sit, miles away, sadly unable to return the favor. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
I met Jim back in 2002 in New Smyrna Beach. I was his hairdresser as well as his friend (more like a daughter) He was the sweetest man I ever met and the most intelligent one with a laid-back attitude while vacationing in the south. I will miss him at those 9:00 am appts. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Liz and his entire family. Kathy Washington (Sandy Beach Salon)New Smyrna Beach, Florida
Dear Liz and family,

I remember Jim as a bright, warm and dedicated man. He was such an advocate for the University Library, as was Liz, and his support for my work as Dean of Library Services was indispensable.
I will remember him fondly.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Dear Liz, Jay and families, Pat and I were saddened to hear of Jim's death. Jim was one of the pillars of funeral service not only in Massachusets but on a national basis as well. He will be greatly missed by all.
Fondly John Crane

To Jay and the entire Waring family:
I first met Mr. Waring face to face in 1994 when I helped with the funeral of Officer Thomas J. Giunta. Since that time I have worked with him, helping with the arrangments for several fallen officers in this city and others, retired officers, and numerous dignitaries. While working alongside him he was a man that gained my respect very quickly. The dedication he showed towards his profession was second to none. Having recently lost my dad I know the emotions that you and your family are experiencing. Be proud of what he did in his professional and personal life. His legacy with last forever. May God bless him and may he rest in eternal peace.
Sgt. Michael K. Hoar, Fall River Police Department
Dear Liz, Jay and Christine:
It is with heavy hearts that we send our deepest sympathy to you on the death of Jim.
He was a very accomplished man, and a true friend to both Phil and I. His reach throughout the Country, and the many lives he touched is a tribute to his character. How can I, personlly, forget the beginning of his career, working at the funeral home with Russell and Mark? He was such a bundle of energy and knew just how he wanted to bring his compassionate message to as many people as he could. May you be comforted by your memories, and may your faith help in the healing process. We are sure that Jay and Christine will continue to carry on his legacy.
I remember Mr. Waring warmly from his visits to The Eliot Hotel. I thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor and he always left me laughing! It was nice to meet your family when you accompanied him to Boston. My condolences to you all; Mr. Waring was a wonderful person!
Jane LeRoy Greene
Dear Liz and family,
Your "slide show" was so uplifting. It seemed to say that although Jim left too soon, you had a wonderful family life together. We had some great times with you, and our boys enjoyed talking baseball with Jim when they went to breakfast with us. Our very best wishes to you at this difficult time.
Love to all,
Jan and Dave

Although Sumner Waring did not know me, I wanted to write to express appreciation for his vision. I am one of many social workers(and other professionals working in the area of grief), to attend several of the conferences put on by his, and then a coalition of funeral homes in the RI/Mass area.
These conferences were always a treat...from the wonderful speakers, to the food, to hearing about some worthy person who was being honored, to the fact that the conference and CEU's were all free. I'm sure there are many other areas in his life where his generosity came through, but I feel lucky to have benefitted because of him. I'm sure this special man will be much missed not only by family and friends, but by many whom he never even knew. Barbara Brown
Jim was such a special person to so many of us. He will be greatly missed. May you all find solace in the fact that he is now at peace and that he definitely left a mark on our community.

We will miss him.

Dear Liz, Jay & Kristin, & Christine, Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Jim. As you know, words cannot express the gratitude I feel for his unwaivering support to me and my family during the horrific time after the car accident when I was an apprentice in Kenmore Sq. His amazing treatment of my family when they traveled up for surgeries-supplying hotels, dinners, etc., his reassurances to them that I would always have a job with him no matter the outcome of the uncertain brain injuries, his loyalty and commitment to keep me employed, insured and paid during that time are unheard of in this day and age. Prior to the accident, I was wide-eyed and awed by his intelligence, professionalism and prestige. Not only am I a grateful for all that he did for me, I am thankful for having known him and learned from him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I am sorry for your loss; lots of wonderful memories of your Father. Your family is in our prayers. Take care and be well.

Jay and family - My sincere sympathy to your family during this difficult time.
Nearly fifty years ago, in the mid 1960's when Fall River and the Fall River Chamber of Commerce were both in serious trouble, Jim was one of the young lions that stepped forward. His leadership and effort helped to make a significant difference in the future of both. We were there during that time and we know that Jim will be sadly missed. Our memories are strong and many. Liz and his family are in our hearts and prayers. Dennis and Edie Orvis, Executive Vice President, Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce, 1969 to 1983.
Dear Liz, We were shocked to find Jim's obit in this morning's Prov. Journal. As you had suggested I was sitting tight 'til his treatments were over on Oct. 6th, and today was the day I was planning to call to see if now he was up to having us come to visit. All of us not only in the Westport community, but also (according to his obit) in the far wider community to which he reached out, will sorely miss his warmth, exuberance and love of life. We were priviledged to have known him and to have basked in the affection that was part and parcel of who he was.....a rare and wonderful soul. God Bless! We send you our love, Dick and Ellen Gower
Jay, what a nice tribute to your father. After seeing all those pictures, I felt as though I new him. He appeared to be a loving father and grandfather. I'm sure he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Words will never express all that Jim did for so many people, those who grieved those who needed a mentor in funeral service, those who needed a laugh, those who were warmed by his big bear hug, those who just knew he was there for any question, or need. I will miss him deeply and always have a special place for him in my heart. He loved life, people and most of all his family. God Bless you all and thanks for sharing him with us. With deepest sympathy and love,
With deepest sympathies...Lisa (Bridge) Phillips
My sincere sympathies to Jim's family and friends. Jim was a friend. Jim was the first one to greet me as a new member of the Fall River Rotary Club. He made a point to seek me out, shake my hand and later sent me a sincere note. Once he found out we both went to Babson College we always said "Us Babo's have to stick together". I will miss Jim and his welcoming warm smile. Bob Howard of Norfolk, MA
At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the whole Waring family. I had met Jim only a few times but he was a man the left a big impression. Funeral Service will miss him.
To Liz, Jay, and Christine. It is with deep sadness I read about the passing of Jim. I don't think I have ever met a more thoughtful and caring person. When my dad passed away, he sent me a personal letter expressing his thoughts about my dad and our family. I will never forget that. Liz, as a lifelong friend and classmate, I send you my deepest condolences and hope that the future brings you many thoughts of Jim and the greater good that he had done in his lifetime. It will always bring a smile to your face. Jim is in our prayers, God Bless

Jay, Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your Dad. I was sadden when I heard about his passing. My thoughts go back to the first day I met your Dad at NEI. He was always full of energy, and his dedication as a funeral service professional was his passion. Serving with your Dad on the Board of Trustee's at NEI was an honor. Your Dad will be missed by all, and I will always cherish the good memories. Your Dad gave so much of his talent to funeral service, and we all benefit from our association with him. Unfortunately, my schedule will not permit me to attend the services, but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Please convey my thought with your mother.

Dear Liz, Jay, Christine and family, My heart beats slowly this morning feeling your pain. You were blessed to have shared such a wonderful life with Jim, your dad or fondly, Grandy Jim. May he rest in peace. His battle is over, may this bring some comfort to you all. God bless and peace to you.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Waring family. I was truly saddened by the news of Jims passing. Jim was such a positive influence in my funeral service career, and between he and Jay, could not have been any nicer to work with, and for. I will always remember his kindness. RIP Jim.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
Liz, Jay and Christine, our deepest sympathy in the loss of Jim. David Oliveira and Victor Medeiros
God bless Liz and Jim's family. The thing I will remember most about Jim is his ability to write wonderful letters. He was like Ronald Regan in that respect. When I became President of the Fall River Chamber of Commerce, Jim sent me a letter of welcome. When I resigned, he sent me a letter of remorse that I was leaving. When my Dad passed, he sent a Western Union telegram telling me how sad he was, and how much he was thinking of me. When my son passed, I recieved the most important letter from Jim. He told me that the pain I was feeling was due to the fact that Jeff's passing was "out of order"...children are not supposed to pass before their parents. Jim was a person I not only respected...he was a person I admired. He truly cared for his friends...his clients...and his family. I am devastaded by his passing. I truly loved and admired him...God's peace, my friend. You comforted me when I lost loved ones. I now grieve for our loss of you.
Jay, On behalf of all the staff at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home please accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of you dad, a great man.
