It had to be the dollop of love included in all her food. She will be missed by so many. It helps to know that she is now in the bosom of God.

I was lost in a big city, scared, and I walked into the restaurant for a cup of tea (all I could afford), in 1972. Mrs. Woods brought me the tea, plus a big plate of biscuits and jam, then she brought a big ol' plate of sausage, bacon, and ham...She said I looked half-starved and needed to keep up my strength so I could follow God's path for me. It was the only time I was ever there, but her kindness and the feeling of meeting a new friend has always been a part of me. May God give strength to those who loved her...

He Knows, He's Been There
by Deloris Barr

If you think that no one understands
The trials you're going through
The awful pain, the heavy burdens
That seem far too much to endure
Just remember, He knows our puny frame
He's aware, He knows your name
He understands, is very much aware
Yes, He knows, He's been there
He laid aside His mighty power
That's not all, His Glory, too
Even humbled Himself further
He actually died, for me and you
Don't you see, He knows of suffering
He's felt the pain, that you feel within
He understands, He is aware
He knows all about it,
'Cause He's been there
He's been there, yes, He's been there
Jesus knows your situation
Yes He knows, yes, He's been there

May the love of God embrace your family as your mother and grandmother embraced so many from all over the world. I had the pleasure of visiting Sylvia's on many occasions when I brought a busload of seniors from Senior Citizens Counseling and Delivery Service in Washington, DC to New York for special events. A very nice gentleman always came out to the bus and greeted us before we entered the restaurant. They remembered our group every time we came to New York. If we attended the Christmas Show at Rockerfeller Center or a Broadway play, Sylvia's was always our restaurant of choice. Sylvia would graciously visit all the tables, take pictures, sign menus and chat with us about her humble beginnings. Her warmth, love and gratitude for our patronage, I will NEVER forget. She taught me a lot about embracing people from all walks of life, how to make people feel at home and comfortable. I bought her cookbooks and use them faithfully when cooking for my family. Her recipes highlight how food unites. She loved Harlem and Harlem loved her. We will miss you Sylvia, but we are grateful for all the special gifts you shared with us and the love you gave through your phenomenal talent of cooking. You will always truly be an inspiration and a special light in Harlem.

My sister and I visited the resturant back in 2001 while visiting our aunt. Mrs. Sylvia came to our table and chatted with us. Upon learning that I worked at one time with her niece Janet McGill ( married now) she placed a call to her. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly and so was she.

I started going to Sylvia's when I was a lonely college student missing Grandma's down-home cooking. When family from the Midwest visited me in NJ; I immediately took them to Sylvia's for a taste of home. I have her cookbooks and bought copies for family; and we eagerly bought products from her food line when they came on the market. She was so warm and gracious; and never seemed to meet a stranger. She will be missed.

Mrs. Sylvia Woods. R.I.P. Her hospitality was amazing. She made you feel at home. I visited the restaurant for a friends 50th birthday 8 years ago. Little did we know the time we would have. Mrs. Woods was so friendly. She greeted us, took pictures with us and the live Gospel music just added to the atmosphere. What a great time we'll always treasure. Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,

Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
