As friends of your neighbors Robert & Mary Haviland of Roslyn, PA, in the early '50s, we have been confirmed fans of Family Circus. I recall two references to the Havilands in your early cartoons. So sorry to hear of your wife's passing and that she had Altzheimer. You have brought joy to the world.

Dear Bil, and Family: As a long time fan of The Family Circus, and in a random internet search, I came upon the artical of Thel's passing. As it approaches the one year anniversary, please accept my condolences. I have added her to my Rosary paryers.
God's blessings be with you all.

Dear Keanes: I just now found out about "Mommy" from The Family Circus passing away last month. She was one of my favorite characters in the comic panels. I had almost all of the comic strip books. The first real picture that I've seen of her was on the back of the book titled "I'll Shovel The Cards" which I bought when it was first released in the spring of '92. She seemed like a beautiful lady, and I'm sure she had an equally beautiful heart of gold too. Sometimes when I hear my two young nieces thanking the good lord for a rainbow or some other beautiful happening, I felt like I was living your comic as well. I'm one of "Mommy"'s biggest fans, and I'll certainly miss her deeply.

From Childhood I grew up with "Family Circus" (My parents said myself and my siblings grew up IN one!)

As in FC, we grew up in a close family that was filled with the usual chaos-and love-that we have seen illustrated dfor these many years.

With Mrs. Keane's passing, we have ALL lost a family member, but we will always have the wonderful memories.

God Bless to Mrs. Keane and the Keane family

To the Keane family,
I was fortunate to be a friend to your son Christopher for a time when we both lived in Southern Cal and worked together. I met Mr. and Mrs. Keane at a cartoonist's dinner and will always remember your kindness. My mother is going through what Thelma did and so I know how hard the journey can be sometimes for the family, but I'm sure your love for her guided her safely home.

Dear Bill & Family.

Thel was such a joy to work with at Barton House. I looked forward to the weekends where her joyful participation in all of the activities made them more meanigful for me and the residents. I will always treasure my memories of her!

Words do not suffice to express my heart breaking for you and your family. My condolences to you all. I have always been so impressed with "Mommy's" patience with her lively crew. It is also refreshing to see a positive male role model who still "swept" Mommy off her feet with a kiss, who brought her flowers and spent time with his children(even letting them help with the strips). I hope, Mr. Keane(Sr & Jr) you will continue with the comic. Yours is the FIRST comic (often only one) I read. May GOD bless and comfort you all now and always.
May 28, 2008
My prayers and condolences to everyone. Your family has been inspiring to so many and a joy to have known. I was thinking last week at my niece's graduation from OLPH that it was 40 years ago that Glen and Jim Hannah and Larry Durack and Ken Peterson and I graduated form OLPH with Fr. Maguire saying Mass. Now "Mommy" and Fr. Maguire can whisper to us to avoid the potholes in life and stay on that dotted line made so famous with your cartoons. Peace to all in His Holy Name.
May 28, 2008
What a wonderfully welcoming woman. In spring ' 99 during a NCS event, Thel immediately insisted on introducing a timid me because of my name to Bil -- she had only just met me but she made me feel like the real "Dolly" to her real "Mommy". A very gracious and compassionate spirit. Paraphrasing lines from Peter Pan creator JM Barrie's biographic movie "Finding Neverland", when the little boy loses his loved one, he says "It's just, I thought she'd always be here." To which Barrie replies so beautifully: "So did I. But in fact, she is, because she's on every page of your imagination. You'll always have her there. Always." Fortunately Thel will always be in print for all to see but more so imprinted on each of our hearts forever. Thank you for sharing her with all of us.
May 28, 2008
Our deepest sympathies to your family. We have been fans of Family Circus since we were kids. Our children loved Family Circus so much we started buying all of the Family Circus books and have reread them over and over again. We have smiled and laughed out loud with each drawing. Thank-you for bringing sunshine into our lives. Your in our thoughts and our prayers.

I am so sorry about your great lost. I really enjoyed reading this. It just was so cute.
May knowing that others really do care give you a measure of comfort.
The Bible assures us: “Jehovah is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34:18)
May 28, 2008
To the Keane Family,
We offer our deepest condolences on your dear loss. It's obvious that Thelma touched the lives of many; especially as "Mommy" in the Family Circus cartoon. May you find comfort in your loving memories and in the hope that soon "All those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." (John 5:28,29)
May 27, 2008
Mr. Keane and Family,
I am sorry to hear about the passing of 'Mommy.' I have enjoyed reading the, "Family Circus," since I was a little girl and so many times it fit right into my family. Bless You All.
May 27, 2008
I just read about Mrs. Keanes death and I am so sorry to hear about the loss. I have enjoyed Family Circus since I was a child and know Mr. Keane to be a very giving man through work with the Society of Professional Journalists. May God help the Keane family through this difficult time.
May 27, 2008
Bill & family,

We just heard of Thel's passing this afternoon, and are shocked and sad for the family of our beloved neighbors. May the comfort that only comes from God, sustain you in the days ahead, and as you gather from around the world, may the memories deep in your heart give you warmth and joy as you recall them together. We've grown to love you Bil, along with your wonderful work, and are here if we can do anything to help in the weeks ahead.

Love, Don and Mary Jane

To the Keane family,
my deepest sympathy to you and your family at this time. I just wanted to thank you for sharing "Mommy" with the world. The Family Circus, is such a special part of my life. I feel like I just lost a dearly loved family member of my own. God bless all of you.
May 27, 2008
My sincerest condolences to you and your family in this sad time.
I have only three comic strips on my fridge, and all are Famiy Circus strips, (3.15.88, 9.24.00 & 1.19.03).
You have touched so many hearts with your gentle wisdom and humor that I am not surprised to learn that the basis for 'Mommy' was your wife.
Thank you for all the wonderful, clean, gentle and family oriented strips that the both of you produce. I hope you keep her memory alive for a long time to come in your stirp.
I am sorry you now have a missing member of your family, but I was told many years ago that if you keep that person in your heart, you will never lose or forget them. This holds true for Thelma and she will always be in our hearts. God Bless.
May 27, 2008
Heartfelt condolences to the entire Keane family. Reading your column daily makes me feel like I know you all personally.
May 27, 2008
My sincere condolences. I cannot remember your mom (outside of the cartoon world), but we lived next to you in Blue Bell, PA . Actually, you referred to our family a few times in the comic, and they are still framed and hanging in our house. I hope Mrs. Keane's memory lives on in the Family Circus.
May 27, 2008
I haven't subscribed to a newspaper for about a year or so now, but the first comic strip that I would read every morning, before any others, was "The Family Circus". The warmth and humor of each day's strip was always filled with a moral of some sort. Mrs. Keane, you have truly been an inspiration to families everywhere. May God grant you Eternal Light, Rest, Happines and Peace.
May 27, 2008

We thank Thelma for being a wonderful inspiration all these years and for your family that provided us with humor and insight.

I LIKED TO READ THE FAMILY CIRCUSE ALL THE TIME. I WILL MISS THELMA KANE IN THE COMICS.
May 27, 2008
BRILLIANT comic strip. To the family: I am sorry for your loss.
May 26, 2008
to mr. bil keane, and the keane family:

when i was a little girl, Family Circus made me smile, made me want to be the kind of mother i saw in "Mommy", who also reminded me a lot of my own mom. (it was the hair do!) the inspiration from your beloved wife and mother is evident, heartwarming, and unforgettable.

i now have a 3 month old baby girl, and look forward to sharing the daily Family Circus comics with her one day. they are still a breath of fresh sweet air, and proof that there is still good stuff in the funny pages :)

may the lord bless and keep each of you at this sorrowful time. please accept this expression of sympathy from a young woman who is just beginning her journey as a mommy.
May 26, 2008
Dear Keane Family,
High school was a long time ago, but the memories of the times I spent at your home with Gayle are some of the best. I always felt welcome, the snacks were the best, and Mrs. Keane's accent was music to my ears. I remember her warmth and her smile. Some of the best times were spent in your pool ---even the time when the pet duck bit my stomach. Mr. Keane, Gayle, Neil, Glen and Jeff, you have my deepest sympathy. Sincerely, Melanie (Armstrong) Cooper

To the Keanes:
"Family Circus" is one of my favorites. I'm sure Mrs. Keane was a very nice lady. I'm sorry to hear of her passing.
May 26, 2008
Our deepest sympathy, Bil, to you, Glen, Linda, and the rest of your family on the loss of your dear Thelma. We met you both in Paris, I think for the first graduation. You both were so warm and smiling. I remember that you were very friendly, and had a witty, almost mischievious sense of humor! (But, of course!) After meeting and speaking to Thel for a few minutes she seemed a bit shy, but that didn't last long, because her Australian joy of life kicked in and she was showing off her refined manner with humor interspersed. I could only imagine the laughter and joy that must have been expressed and heard you your home for so many years. Even though Thel had been ill for the last few years. She would want you to remember the love and joy you shared and the wonderful lives you brought into this world and how your success as parents is reflected in their eyes and their children's eyes.

May God grant you peace to know that your Wife, Mom and Grandmother is in the hands of Our Dear Lord, Jesus. Thelma is home, where we all will be together one day with our loved ones who have gone before us.

All our love,
May 26, 2008
To the Keane Family,

Thelma will live forever as "Mommy."

I raise my glass and toast her legacy.

Dear Keane Family,

I feel like I know a little bit of your mom and your family through the "Family Circus". I have two comics that have remained on my refrigerator door for well over 20 years. One reminds me "It Slips by too quickly...Treasure each day". My mom would send me clippings of the Family Circus over the years and the warmth, laughter and wisdom shared from your family indeed was a gift. There were times when I felt so connected to your mom even if it were through a comic strip. I join the many who are grateful for her life. Please know that you all are in my prayers.
May 26, 2008
My deepest sympathies to the Keane family. I grew up reading The Family Circus in the funny pages every day, and I will truly miss "Mommy".
May 26, 2008
I wanted to express my deepest condolences to the entire Keane family. I feel for your loss, and especially having to endure such a private matter in such a public arena. I did want to share how sad I feel upon reading about Thelma's death. I was born in 1958 (just like Jeff) and I have literally grown up with the Family Circus. Now, my children read it with me. I have many comics that I have saved and posted on the bulletin board (many are now falling apart), but your comics have touched me - I have cried and laughed along with you. That really is quite a legacy to have impacted on the lives on multiple generations (My father first read Family Circus to me when I was a little girl). I hope that you find comfort in your memories and solace in the fact that your family has provided countless hours of pleasure to many millions of people.
With sympathy,
Gloria Rickerd (Phoenix, Arizona - originally from Pennsylvania)
May 26, 2008
To the Keanes,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have never met Thelma personally but through your comic strip I feel as if I known her for years. May God Bless all of you.
May 26, 2008
To the Keane Family

You are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. As a mother of two young children I see myself in Thel's character in the Family Circus everyday. I love the comic strip and will greatfully remember the wonderful woman that she was. May she rest in peace.
May 26, 2008
My condolences to the family of Thelma Keane, and all those who loved her. May you find comfort in the promise of Isaiah 33:24, where Jehovah God promises us that "no resident will say: “I am sick." May the hope of seeing your loved one again, in perfect health, bring comfort to your hearts, while we await the day in which "He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore" (Revelation 21:4).
May 26, 2008
Blessings to Mrs. Keane and her spirt- thank you to the family and Bill for letting us share her through Family Circus.
May 26, 2008
Thank you for all the wonderful, warmly humorous (and often wise) glimpses of family life through Family Circus, Thank you for sharing your talent, your family and your love of family with us all these years. You and "Mommy" have left a powerful, enduring legacy. It is reflected in the persona and lives of your beautiful, talented family. (We are so blessed to know Glen and Linda). Our prayers are with you and your family as Thelma is welcomed home by our Lord.
May 26, 2008
I'm sorry I can't be there in person.

There's a lot of reserch: they will eventually beat this thing.
May 26, 2008
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
May 26, 2008
Dear Keane Family,

I have enjoyed the Family Circus over the years and wanted to express my sympathy to the family with the loss of your dear wife, mother and grandmother. May I also commend your openness and honesty about the disease she was living with. I work in continuing care and certainly admire the courage of families who acknowledge their journey with Alzheimer Disease. Best Wishes and may you be comforted by happy memories as you grieve your loss.
May 26, 2008
So sorry to hear about "Thel". While I was rearing five children, Family Circus was the highlight of my early morning routine. It always reminded me that somewhere out there was another family dealing with the same up and down that I was. Brought many a smile.
May 26, 2008
To all of the Keanes,

Aunt Thel had a smile that melted your heart. She was the love that inspired Uncle Bil, and it came through in the Family Circus. She gave so much of herself in everything that she accomplished in her life, especially her family.

Our loss is God's gain, and her memory will live on. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in the peace of God's love, Aunt Thel.
May 26, 2008
Sincere sympathy and condolences to Bill Keane and Family.
May 26, 2008
My deepest sympathies to your family. I have been a life long Family Circus fan and have grown up reading your daily comics. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My thoughts and prayer are with the Keane family. Also, I have been a fan of the "Family Circus" since I was a child and have saved many clips of the cartoon family. This is one of my favorited comic strips and I always head to the comics when reading the newspaper...may the Lord bless you Mr. Keane and your family!
May peace be with you and much love!
May 26, 2008
Bil, I was so sorry to hear of Thel's death.

In the early 80s you did a cartoon called "Little Helpers" for "How-To" magazine in Indianapolis and I came to the West coast to see you regularly during those years. Our brief relationship then and the opportunity to get to know you and Thel is something I remember with joy to this day.

My prayers for you and your entire family include gratitude for all you have meant to so many people. I still have your Dec. 23 Christmas cartoon on my refrigerator, where it reminds me of what you and your family have contributed to the rest of us.
May 26, 2008
I'm sorry to hear about your loved one I hope I can be of some comfort to you, by sharing a scripture without at John11:24(Jesus said," I am the resurrection and the life, he that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.
May 26, 2008
Our love and sympathy go to you, Bill, and your extended family. Wish we were still next door neighbors so we could say our thoughts in person. My mother too suffered the same as Thema so we know your dedication was as solid as my father's. Our prayers are with you during these difficult days.
Honey Ridgway (Costantini) and my extended family as well.

The Keane Family,

I have been a fan of Bil's comics since I was a little girl. Thel was always the woman I always wanted to be when I grew up; she was beautiful, a great wife and mother. I got this from just reading the comics and Bil's interpretation of her through them. I am a collector of the books and I will forever cherish them. May Thel rest in peace and know that she had little girls looking up to her, just like me. I am sorry for your loss but she will continue to live on through the comics.
God Bless!!

May 25, 2008
Dear Bil and all the Family Circus-The Asadourian's were so saddened to hear you lost your lovely wife and the children their wonderful mother.
How great it was to spend half of our adult life and Lynn and Eve their childhood and teenage years growing up next door to such a fine family. You will always be in our memories. Joan recalls the time that Micki got in your yard and terminated one of your rabbits. Joan
went out and got a replacement and
when she gave it to Thel ( Thel's comment was ) " I've been trying to get rid of those rabbits for years ".
They had a good laugh about that. There were many good times, parties and laughs over those 30 years. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
May 25, 2008
I don't know any of you but I must tell you that your comic strip made me smile on a daily basis. Thank you.
Prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.
May 25, 2008
Dear Bil and family....I remember the first time I saw Thel...she was 30 years old and beautiful. You were living in Roslyn and Tom brought me to meet the family. And 50 years later, I saw her for the last time, at Dan's wedding in Ireland. She was still beautiful. What wonderful memories you have of "Mommy", and what a wonderful life you have all had because of her.
