To Tony Gwynn's entire family,
We will never forget Tony both as a devoted Padre for 20 years and for being a loving and generous person to his family and the Poway community.

We are giving our suggestions to the Mayor of Poway for Tony's memorial. Hoping it will be placed in Old Poway Park. So appropriate for our home town hero.
Love,
Linda and Michael
Poway residents since 1987

John 11:33 says: "When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping and groaning, he groaned within himself and became troubled." Jesus expressed tears when his friend Lazarus died, he knows how it feels to lose a dead loved one and he understands what you and your family are experiencing. May this bring you and your family comfort in this time of need. cjp (fla.)

June 30, 2014
It's because of Tony I am a life long Padre fan, growin up in San Diego in the 80's I remember riding my bike to watch Tony play at Jack Murphy stadium. Tony was the most talented, most respected player I can ever remember, I know he will be missed dearly not only by baseball fans but by all. Tony was a baseball genius, naturally talented good hearted man. Baseball and San Diego were Tonys passion and his legacy will carry on. San Diego will never forget you Mr Padre. Thank you Gwynn family for sharing this wonderful man with us, may God hold you in his arms and give you comfort in your loss. REST IN PEACE MR PADRE !!!

June 28, 2014
I always enjoyed seeing Tony play he was the greatest player I had ever seen. I loved being there when he would get a home run and win the game with his hit. I remember hearing Tony speak one time at Qualcomm before the game I never got a chance for an autograph or a handshake but just hearing him speak was enough. I will always remember every thing he did for the Padres and the San Diego community. God Bless you Tony and to the Gwynn family may the Lord give you peace during this time and may the memories of the years stay with you forever. God Bless
June 28, 2014
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
June 27, 2014
Being a native of San Diego I knew of Tony as long as I can remember. To know San Diego, you knew of Tony. I took my then young 7 year old son to a meet and greet autograph session once. The line was soooooo long and took forever. BUT by the time we got to Tony, he made my son feel like he was the only one in line! So classy. Making his fans young or old feel like they were that important. They talked about my son's little league career :)
Thanks Gwynn family for sharing your husband/father with us all. Rest in peace Tony
June 26, 2014

Tony I will miss you! Thanks for all the service to the community of San Diego and all the positive memories you gave me throughout the years! You always put a smile on my face when you would get a base hit, I counted on it and you came through. You were a stand up man that I believe athletes around the world should strive to be like. Thank you again Tony!

Dear Gwynn family
I am truly sorry for you loss and you have my deepest sympathies. May you find comfort from God's promise to wipe every tear from our eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be any more, the former things will pass away.
June 23, 2014
May you rest in peace Tony, you will never be forgotten in San Diego. God bless his family.
June 23, 2014
Gone too soon!! A great athlete and great person.
Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Whatever we were to each, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be the household word it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was;
there is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of your mind
because I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near just around the corner...
All is well. Nothing is past, nothing is lost.

One brief moment and all will be as it was before,
only better, infinitely happier
and forever we will be one together.
June 23, 2014
RIP my god welcome you to his KINGDOM Tony GWYNN.
June 22, 2014
Tony you were as great a person as you were a great ballplayer. Your lasting legacy of being a true professional will never be forgotten.
June 22, 2014
I was a young kid when I met "T". He was the older kid in the neighborhood, who'd pitch sock balls to the young kids. "Sockballs" a small ball created from cut up socks, wrapped with rubber bands. Inexpensive, and difficult to hit. A game that played an important role in the hitting talents of the Gwynn
brothers and others in the neighborhood.

An inspiration and mentor to many from the west side of Long Beach. He and his wife opened their doors to my brother and me as young minor leaguers, and allowed us to work out with him during the off season. This exemplifies the person he was. He was a great baseball player, and true friend who'd give you the shirt off his back. A true "class act", with a great family. I strive to be half the man he was.

He will be truly missed. God bless the family, and may he rest in peace.
June 22, 2014
Tony, you will be missed , but never forgotten. You were as good a person as you were a baseball player. So long, but never goodbye.
June 21, 2014
You were so gracious to talk to our 10 year old all star boys while in Fresno a year ago. You will live on in those boys memories forever!

June 20, 2014
Tony Gwynn was a great ambassador for the game of baseball. He was a hard working ball player. A wonderful role model for baseball fans of all ages. I was fortunate to be present at his Hall of Fame Induction. It was very fitting that he and Cal Ripkin, Jr were inducted in the same year. Two outstanding ball players and human beings. The baseball world was made better because of Tony Gwynn. May he rest in eternal peace. May his family find comfort in his memory and all the kind words, memories and admiration shown by fans every where.

June 19, 2014
Tony Gwynn was one of seven players I cherished as a kid watching baseball. Unfortunately he is the first of those to die. I shed a tear as I post this unforseen tragic death. He beat oral cancer before yet I was unaware it struck again though I respect his privacy in the battle yet we fans would have given unheard of support. San Diego lost a legend this day as I lost a man I idolized from afar. One reason this player was and is special is back when I was 10 I made a birthday card for him like the outline of his jersey. I did not ask for an autograph or anything but he sent me a short thank you note for the card. I still have that personal treasure to this day. Tony will continue to inspire me and so many more even those who are too young to have know the great man he was personally and professionally. Thank you Gwynn family for sharing him with San Diego and the world.

I've been a Phillies fan all of my life. But you will always be my favorite player! I idolized you for years and went to most of your games when you came to play the Phillies! I met you once at a card show, and realized how genuine you really were. I can't believe you're gone this early, but you will always be remembered by your number one fan!
June 18, 2014
Tony, for those of us who were fortunate enough to have grown up with you and your family on the "Westside", we feel an extreme loss. While your achievements on the field are incredibly remarkable, your off field achievements through charitable work and teacher far surpass all of the statistics compiled. You were one of the most selfless, caring, thoughtful people I have been associated with. My heart is deeply saddened by your passing but is also saddened for those who were less fortunate not to have met you. May you rest in quiet slumber in the arms of the angels!

June 18, 2014
Much too young to die , may the Lord help and give his family strength and peace through this trying time , god bless and rest in peace .
June 18, 2014
I have been a baseball fan since 1982. As a wide-eyed ten year-old tomboy, watching baseball provided me with an enduring collection of memories.

Now, thirty-two years later, I am still an ardent fan of the game. Although never a Padre fan, I always enjoyed watching Tony Gwynn. An incredibly focused and disciplined hitter, he was truly enjoyable to watch every time he stepped up to the plate.

Sadly, he has lost his battle with cancer. He left behind a legacy of a loving family, dear friends, loyal fans, and memories of outstanding hitting and overall consumate professionalism.

May God be with his family, friends, and fans. May He bless them with love, comfort, and strength to face the sorrowful days ahead.

Thank you, Tony Gwynn, for being a model of consistency, sportsmanship, and integrity. You will never be forgotten!

We wanted to show him the respect that he showed to the fans and the game. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. God bless you and your family.

I can not imagine the grief your family must be feeling. Many fans like myself feel a loss for a great man that was such a beautiful inspiration of life. While I did not know the great husband, father, son, and Hall of Fame player, I revel in the message he left for us all in his smile and laughter. A message we all need to recognize. He just seemed to love life. My greatest condolences for your loss and thank you Tony for making baseball so fun to watch. June 17, 2014
Gwynn Family...
Not only did He take your husband, father and best friend.. He also took something even more valuable..He took both a true gentleman and a teacher.. I remember meeting your father in Pittsburgh. I was a vendor at the old Three Rivers Stadium and I was assigned peanuts and I was disappointed to say the least. So as O was walking across the turf with my head down I heard this voice say to me the same thing my great grandmother used to say to me..'Young man ..walk with your head up..it's always about where you are going..not where you have been..' As I looked up I noticed who it was and smiled and told him my great grandmother used to tell me that. He just said 'mine too..'.. He then autographed a baseball for me and gave me this gawd awful smelly brown shirt,, I had the both of those forever..Okay so it seemed like forever.. It sat right next to my baseball glove autographed by another great hitting lefty..Willie Stargell.. While away visiting family a power surge during a storm started a fire at my grandparents hose and everything was lost.. Including my baseball card collection, smelly brown shirt, autographed baseball and autographed glove.. Well thanks for letting reminisce about my younger day.. Your father will be missed.. He was and will always be considered by me as 'one of the good guys'. May you find comfort and solace and a bit of peace even though your grief must be immense..

PEACE

I had the pleasure of visiting Petco Park today to pay my respects to Mr. Padre, Tony Gwynn. It was such a peaceful atmosphere, lots of people around taking pictures, lots of love, weather was beautiful, nothing but good things being said about Tony: a good family man, good friend, an awesome mentor, beautiful smile, dynamic ball player…..just an all around guy. (It's “always” nice to hear nothing but GOOD things said about a person once they are gone. Shows what a “great” impact Tony had on everyone.)
No more suffering, no more pain Tony. R.I.P. You will truly be missed. San Diego mourns your death.
Gone but never forgotten. Peace, Prayers, Blessings to the Gwynn family.

To The Tony Gwynn Family-

My heart goes out to you all, & shedding some tears myself over this- Tony was not just a great family man & baseball player, he was a great human being, that has been taken away too soon. I met Tony at an autograph signing he had, out at El Cajon Ford, back in 2000 I believe it was, right after he had hit a grand slam homer. I wanted to get an autograph for my Dad who was a great fan also, & had had a stroke, & a photo for myself. I waited the hour or so it took, & looked like they were going to shut it down for time-sake, since Tony had to get to the stadium. But they kept the line open, Tony kept signing, & smiling, chatting some, & finally my turn. Tony was, just as everyone said, one of the nicest, most giving & considerate persons, that I had ever met. I congratulated him, & he thanked me, then asked for his autographed No Fear photos, & he said, "You bet!" I'll never forget that, thanked him again, shook his hand & left, looking over my shoulder as he continued signing & greeting fans. that is one of the warmest & best memories, I have ever had. All my best to you all & sincere condolences, & Junior, you look so much like your Dad & act like him too! Keep up the hard work on the Phillies & with your career too! Sorry if this is too long! All my best to you all!
Sincerely, Michael S. Jones, Real Estate Appraiser, Escondido, Ca.

My son and I saw Tony at the Atlanta Stadium when my son was only 10 years old. My son yelled down at the field where Tony was warming up, and Tony looked up in the stands and gave a wave to my son. My son is now 32 years old and still remembers how special Tony made him feel. He was a great player and very personable with his fans. He will be truly missed.

I lived in San Diego from 1982-98 and Tony was my all-time favorite MLB player. He had a career batting average of .338 and 19 seasons with an average of .300 or better and 8 NL batting titles. He played for 20 years and only had one game with 3 strikeouts (by Bob Welch who died last week). More importantly, Tony was a class act who set a great example for fans young and old by the way he carried himself. I'm going to miss him a lot. RIP "Mr. Padre"….
