Colonel Bud Mahurin. Thank you "honest John" for your service to our Country. I am honored to have had tou as my friend and to have worked for you in the aerospace industry. God bless you and America. Best Lou Villegas, November 14, 2013.
We attended Wreaths Across America and our five year old daughter chose this hero to honor. We came home to search his footprint in life and what an incredible life this true American hero lead. We honor and remember Mr. Mahurin during this holiday season and always. Many blessings to his family and friends who loved and miss him. We thank him for his dedicated service. God bless you all.
Bud was the guy who could talk to anyone, regardless of who they were.
I feel very fortunate to have met Bud .
I can remember calling him back in the late eighties and telling him I was building a half size flying replica of the Spirit Of Atlantic City P-47 that he flew.
He was thrilled so much that he and his wife Joan came to my home in NJ to see the project and he even sat in it.
I worked with his wife Joan to put together a surpise for him, presenting with his POW medal at the FAA Tech Center Near Atlantic City,NJ.
I was fortunate enough to fly down to DC in my Arrow,Pick Bud up and fly with him back to the center.
Wow what a thrill and honor.
We put together a video for him.
It was the history of the Spirit Of AC,plus Buds history.
This took sometime but it was worth the effort to see his face.
Later I did a painting depicting Bud,and some of his WWII buddies that was done for the 56th Fighter Group Reunion we did for them at the Tropworld,Casino in AC.
I also was able to get the Mayor at the time Jim Whealn to give him the key to the city.
This was in conjuction with the fact that Bud flew the Spirit Of AC P-47
that they bought during the war bond drive during WWII
We met a couple times at the Baltimore Harbor, where and Joan visited when doing Virginia Bader art events.
Bud loved Chris Craft boats and Midget race cars.
I will forever have fond memories of Bud,and will so many others.
If I had the computer savy to share my photos of Bud I would.
Reading his book "Honest John" I would say is one you should read.
He was a true "ACE" and a great friend

Rest in peace. we might be related but i dont know but it is great to hear that more mahurins are out there doing those great things for this country.sincirely, David Mahurin
I didn't know you personally. I know we are related. No one can have the name Mahurin and NOT be! I have followed Bud through different articles I've read. I'm proud of the job he did for our country!! I'm sorry for your loss (to his family) Love-Shelly Mahurin Latimer
Bud, you were so wonderful as a man, as an inspiration, and step-father. As an Ace you will always be a true HERO to America. THANK YOU. Jenn and I will miss your laughter and stories. We miss you and will forever love you!!!!
Met Bud (and Patty) on his return from Korea, introduced by Col Corey Ford who'd known him from 56th fighter squadron days, later meeting pilots he'd flown with in the ETO (P-47s, P-51s) Gabby Gabreski, Dave Schilling and their boss, Hub Zemke, all of them among the greatest warriors our country has ever sent into battle. Hanging out with Bud, (worked with him on his book, introduced him to Wm A Wellman, director of Wings, hoping to get his story on film) wherever we went he was a focal point, serious, witty, engaging, intimate and always challenging, gathering people, telling stories and for me (then in my twenties)an iconic figure who defined what it was to be a patriot, the epitome of heroism during an era when heroes up-held and believed in the virtues of this country. An unmatchable man. An honor to have known him.
To the Mahurin family my deepest regrets
in having to say goodbye to such a wonderful man. I didn't know him but I thank him and so many others that served so we can have the freedom we have today.
Hello Bud, An electronic guest book, you would have never guessed. Save a seat up there in the clouds.. where friendships are rekindled.
Rudy And Farris Horak 3 June 2010
All of Bud's friends will miss him a lot. We will particularly miss the monthly lunches at Jimmies and the great flying conversations.
It was a great ride old friend, and we had a ball, I'll be bye to get you before too long, so save a cup for me.
Cheers to ole Purdue!!
You have my deepest condolences for he truly was a hero, and a great pilot.
Always a fan of his work.
What a wonderful tribute from the son of this courageous and honorable American! It was because of the courage, competence, and bravery of men such as Bud Mahurin that I was able to know my Father whose job during WWII as a designer of sea-going diesel engines won him deferments until April of 1945. With 2 children and the War in the Pacific still raging the Navy was inducting my Father as an Officer. He was to enter in August of 1945. In the Navy my Father would have used all of his intelligence and strength to accomplish his missions. If President Truman had not used all powers granted to him as Supreme Commander I never would have known my Dad as he would have become a fatality on some atoll in the South Pacific.
So for me, brave Americans heros such as Bud Mahurin have a very, very special place in my heart because they allowed me to know one of the best fathers this nation had. I think I can imagine what it must have been like to have known Bud as I suspect he had the same characteristics my Dad possessed: courage, honor, bravery, competence and never accepting "no" for an answer. I am eternally grateful for your Father's service to this great Country. May he now be with the angels.
Patricia Suacci Warnock San Rafael, CA
May God bless our American heros. And extra- especially Walker Mahurin. Love and respect .
My relationship with you has been more of a father/son & friend affair. I am thankful for this because I can say you will always be remembered as my friend.
When I was a boy, I learned many valuable traits and attitudes by observation and instruction. When I was a young man I continued to learn and apply those traits and attitudes. I learned perseverance, patience, tolerance, and believe it or not, ingenuity. I have flown, learning through osmosis, having you work with me on occasion and I can navigate from training received by your hands on teaching. I pilot boats from experience and instruction given by you. I am able to sail from hands on instruction and tutoring, all of the things you gave me have remained with me through the years. Many have been instructions for knowledge, many have been instruction for life, and all have been done in love and friendship. I will miss you Dad.
It requires a special X factor to be a successful fighter pilot. Hate to see these men leave us.
I want to say Thanks to Mr Bud for his service. I know he has gone on to be with all his other veteran friends sharing old war stories and maybe just maybe he has met my dad and they can share some stories. I am a Blue star mother and I was at the honor flight reception and had such a wonderful time chating with all of the veterans. May you find peace knowing he is with his band of brothers
...for he once slewed the clouds, embraced the sun, rode on flying wings as high as the sky and touched the face of God.
Bless this courageous defender of our country as he becomes the 'missing man' in that most heart wrenching aviation formation.
Scott Dietterick, Kingston, PA
My deepest sympathies to the family of Walker "Bud" Mahurin. On this Memorial Day and every year thereafter, as I hoist the flag, I shall salute the rising sun and when I lower the colors, I shall salute the setting sun.
The P-47 Thunderbolt is my favorite aircraft of WW II in the European Theater. I can see Bud and Gabreski now, as they fly with each other, on a mission with our Lord!
May he rest in peace, never to watch his "6" again!
Having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, I can imagine this man flying over the ships of my father and uncles at some point late in WW II, going in harm's way. God bless him and his family. May they know they're not alone and belong to a great group. My prayers to all who have served and are currently on duty on this Memorial Day weekend. Rest easy, flyer.
Thank you for the freedom we enjoy in our country today! I regret that true "men" are a breed dying with your generation. You have my undying admiration.
Rest In Peace Colonel Mahurin. Let Your Name liveth for everymore...

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am sorry to read of the death of such a truly real American hero of the generation of military servicemen who helped save the world from tyranny and dictators.
