I put this on fb today and was encouraged to pass it on to you.

Although my degree was in agricultural economics, the meandering course of life that God puts us on brought me for a brief time working at Johnson Space Center in the astronaut office (CB). My first boss there was an unflown pilot named Willie McCool. His background was in A-6s and he bad been to Pax river. He had all the credentials of a right stuff test pilot/astronaut. However, in personal demeanor, he was like a camp counselor. He actually wore flip-flops and a tie to work once. He got little-kid excited over the work we were doing (redesigning the Space Shuttle Cockpit). He would gladly take me and my cohort Tammy Walters to lunch just because he was a super nice guy.

His attitude on life is reflected in a story he told me once. He had a brief regarding the cockpit redesign that he had to give at HQ in Washington. He was getting his laptop set up in front of all the big wigs and his computer came on the display as he hooked up. What he wasn't ready for is that he had been playing Warcraft or some such thing with his son earlier in the week and that was what he ended up starting his presentation with. Although slightly embarrassed, he was happy to tell this story on himself. That was who he was.

I met some great people and some great astronauts at NASA, but I can say with all honesty, that Willie was one of the best people I worked with and for. He was wrote me a recommendation letter for Army commission and through his invitation, I got to take my dad (a long time space program engineer) to his launch...to a mission that never landed.

RIP Willie McCool (23 September 1961- 1 February 2003) You are missed

Hey cousin, I'm sure we are somewhere 2nd or third, but were related back somewhere. I don't know why but That flight more than any other since the first excited me. I love science and before I even knew you would be on that flight i was following the progress of pre-flight.
I was super excited when I found out a McCool was on this flight. Everyday I got all the news I could until one early morning when you were comming home. I cried like you were my brother. I mourned and still mourn your passing.
I know The heavenly father has you patroling some outer rim of some universe where you are flying high and free.
May you rest in peace, love and excitement.

Mr. McCool,

I have never met you, but you gave me something that I lacked all of my life, someone to look up to. For the first time in my life, I have someone to look up to, someone that inspires me, someone that in some ways I'd like to duplicate. Thank you for helping me to turn my life around. Thank you for being my hero.

Father we entrust our brother William to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

During a time of terror continual threats of war, a space shuttle crew reminds us of people that make
passionate choices for the good of others. People who are outstanding in character and action. The loss of
the space shuttle has reminded me to reflect. Who are my, our heroes? I heard about Willie McCool from his
brother and sister in law. He passionately loved God,his work and family, very few people ever achieve this kind of success. I am so proud of Willie McCool! I did meet Willie's wife Lani. Lani introduced me to Jesus. Like Willie, she has a love for God. In fact she left me a reminder a small button with a caption" Jesus loves me anyhow". This button caused me to reflect on my passions, my relationship with people my personal relationship with
God. My prayer is for the space shuttle families. Father God provide your wisdom, comfort and peace,
surround the space shuttle families with your love. I am confident of Willie McCool's eternal destiny.
HERO! For some reason during this time of terror and continual threats of war we need to be reminded of our passions our heroes.

I am an old retired Navy Master Chief who served my country on active duty for many, many years. I served four tours in Vietnam and have met a few heros in my day. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Commander McCool, I am willing to bet he was the kind of naval officer I would have followed to hell and back. Commander McCool, you are one of my heros.
February 19, 2003
My family and I would like to give our deepest sympathy. It is very obvious what a wonderful person, husband and father you have lost. He had a big heart and a beautiful, kind smile. It is to say that his family lost a unique person that this world of ours will be lucky to have many more of. Believe me, William McCool's courage shows not only in his professional life but also in his personal life. He lived his life to the fullest, and cared about what made him happy and alive. To his family, please don't be sad. He is looking down at you right now smiling and saying that he will always love you. One day you will be together again.

February 15, 2003
To the family of Willie McCool.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. We, in San Jose, are still mesmerized by the loss of the Space Shuttle Colombia and her crew. I personally felt sad when Willie's name was mentioned among Colombia's crewmates. We (twin brother Ramon and I) knew Willie back in Dededo Junior High and John F. Kennedy High School. We ran track and were in Jazz and summer bands. He played the trumpet and was a good long distance runner. He was really cool. He rode his bike from Andersen AFB to JFKHS in Tumon. He loved the island and the people there. Ramon and I are so very fortunate to have known Willie. I just recently learned of Willie's achievements and was happy for him for all his accomplishments and making it to NASA's Astronaut Corps. It's sad that all we have of Willie now is in our hearts. May the Good Lord bless and keep you all in his tender care as you try to survive this tragic loss. May Willie's wonderful life be never forgotten, and may the
Good Lord shine His Light on Willie and his family forever.
February 14, 2003

God Bless Mr. McCool. Though I never met him I know he was a great person. When I grow up I want to become an astronaut and a pilot, and when I accomplish it, it will in his memory. God Bless his wife, 3 sons and parents. He was a great person because of you and he will be in our memories forever. We will never forget. May he rest in peace and always watch over his family and the world.

February 04, 2003
Today I read a news story in the Daily Southtown about Mr. McCool's 1998 visit to a local school. What a beautiful tribute to a man who took the time to visit two schools, spend time with the students and speak of his love for his wife and children.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. McCool and her family. May God give you comfort and peace. Your husband was a brave pioneer and for this, we thank you for sharing him with our country.
February 04, 2003
Dear William McCool,
Our prayers are with your family & friends. You must have been such a great man - courageous, loving & ambitious.
Before the launch you looked like the happiest man on earth. I thought how proud your children & family must be. Being an astronaut is every boy's dream...you have accomplished so much and you're an inspiration to so many. That's why you will never be forgotten. And while we don't fully understand why God called on one of his favorite son's too early, we find comfort in knowing your spirit will remain with all of us always...Love, The June Family

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,--and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless falls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor eer eagle flew--
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
February 03, 2003

You soared through the skies to the heavens above. G-d held your hand as he led to see the wonders of the world. G-d decided to take you from the earth and you became Part of the Heaven. When I look into the stars at night, I know that because of you and the sacrafice you gave to further our future lives in space. You are a Hero.

May G-d bless your family in their time of sorrow, May they find Peace when the look into the stars, and know that you are beside G-d looking over them.

Godspeed to your family and those whom worked with you at NASA, my they continue through life not looking at the Tragedy of what happen of the end of your life, but the beauty in which you lived your life.

G-d Bless

To the Family of William McCool,
I want to say my heart and prayer goes out to you. I understand what it is like to lose someone in such a tragic way. I lost my sister, Lillian Caceres, on 9/11 and so I can truly say I understand what you are feeling inside. The one thing that got me through this was my faith in God and the prayers of friends and family and strangers. So I want you to know that I will be praying that God will help you through this time of sorrow.
Time does heal, but in your heart you never forget and you never stop loving them.
God bless you and keep the faith.
Sincerely, Aurea

My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of a great hero.
We are thankful to have such a brave angel watching over us. God Bless.
February 02, 2003
My condolences go out to William McCools family. He gave his life to further science and it was an accomplished life. I was drawn to his photograph with the rest of the astronauts. All looked excited and motivated. Mr. William McCool looked more like 22 than 42; his eyes at once showed his focus and the excitement that lay ahead.
I feel like I've lost a great friend and the country has lost one tremendous role model.
To all who knew and loved you, may God give you strength.
