It has dawned on me that it was eleven years ago today that we experienced your funeral. I still remember the details and all of the people who came together to celebrate your life. Especially those so close to you, like Scott and the other young soldiers there as honor guards; the Eckes family who added words and music to the day; and the families of your battle buddies and your school friends who came to say goodbye.

My only regret is due to the rush we had to experience in order to make our appointment at Fort Snelling it was impossible for me to personally thank all those I so wanted to see and hug afterward. We miss you, Nickel, and we are so proud of you still. Love and hugs from your grateful Grandma!

Your mom and I were privileged to ride in last weekend's Patriot Guard Fundraiser ride at Blaine Airport. As Gold Stars we are able to do so, and there is a special area for your pictures, etc., to be exhibited, as well as a program following the ride honoring our military heroes.

For the first time, there was also a recognition of our fallen police heroes as well. Their families, as members of END OF WATCH, were also treated to recognition. Because of your affiliation with law enforcement and your plans to become a police officer, it was even more touching.

Wednesday we decorated Maple Grove's Town Green with hundreds of flags as we do each year now, and our Beyond The Yellow Ribbon organization hosts the evening music concert that now opens Maple Grove Days, another nod to your musical soul. I did not ride in the parade, but watched it in real time so I could see the marching bands. The Rotary has been giving out a Sportsmanship trophy to one of the bands, in your honor, since 2008 I believe. So, for us, it has been a NICK week. Love and miss you, Nickel!

"Let me know in my heart when my days are through, America America I gave my best to you..." - from AMERICAN ANTHEM lyrics.

I first heard this last evening, July 4, 2017, being sung by the West Point Band with vocalist Craig Campbell. When I heard his voice and the lyrics I thought of you immediately, as well as the other youngsters we here in MN have lost in recent years. You indeed gave your best, as did we. Love you always. GB
