Coach Bellard was my Athletic Director at Texas A&M University. When he arrived on campus there were, to the best of my knowledge and belief, three or four black athletes with athletic scholarships. They were all on the track and field team. Coach Bellard approached us after arriving on campus and asked if we could help him recruit African American athletes. He made it clear that he wanted athletes who not only could play football, but could be successful in the classroom as well. His request was granted and the rest is history. Other A&M coaches followed the plan that Charlie Thomas and Emory Bellard had embarked upon. Coach Bellard also guided and implemented the plan that brought women athletes to Aggieland under Title IX. His vision has led to several national women championships at A&M. He was a legend that I was proud to have known and touched his life. Rest well my mentor and friend. We will never forget you.
