21 years have passed and so much has changed in the world we know but the courage, honour and sacrifice of Jason Dunham is as relevant as ever.
I hope that Jason's family and friends are able to continue to share their special memories of an outstanding young American.

Hello,
We wanted to let you and your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to The Greater NYC Ice Hockey League (Youth Hockey Program) to honor and remember Jason Dunham US Marine Corporal.

We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

Jason was a true friend, defending them against bullies. He was altruistic to the last second of his life. Years have past since his ultimate sacrifice. But I am still moved by his bravery and sacrifice. Too many stand by and tolerate evil. Not Jason. That is why I remember him each year at my synagogue in Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the deceased. When I told my rabbi about Jason and his opposition to bullies, he replied that that was why he became a Marine. As a grateful civilian, I remember him always.

I wear your son's name engraved on a medal bracelet in memorial to his honor and bravery exhibited in Iraq. It is easy to say I wear the bracelet with honor for a fellow Marine, but truthfully, seeing his name and thinking about his sacrifice gives me strength when I find myself in need of strength... It creates courage in me when I find that I need a little extra courage to do the right thing... It reminds me that I belong to a brotherhood of men and women who place the value of others and sacrifice above their own life... Seeing his name brings a pride inside of me to the surface and causes me to want to be better for the sake of those around me. I thought it maybe a comfort to you to know that Jason inspires us, one at a time, person by person because of who he was and how he gave. God bless Corps, country and God bless you. Semper Fi

I have kept a picture of your beautiful son. It is attached to a picture called the invitation. It hanged on my wall for everyone who enters my home to see. It is a picture of a young man on his knees, holding out his hand to take the hand of Jesus. It welcomes him to Paradise, I feel in my heart this is Jason. I am sure, he is very special to God. I will continue to pray for Jason, and your family. Thank you Jason for your love of your fellow man.

When I served in Iraq before we turned over a building to the Iraqis we had to search it. In one of the buildings I searched I found a floor to ceiling memorial to Cpl Dunham (about 12 ft high). It had Cpl Dunham's Medal of Honor warrant and a picture of him. Unfortunately we were forced to get rid of it, I ensured that it was taken care of respectfully. His heroism lives on and is talked about in the Marine Corps and I can assure that that will continue forever.

My twins are in the Marines, when one of them rescued a Pitbull puppy he named him in honor of your son. Dunham turned out to be deaf so I trained him with hand signals, he is so loyal, loving and just wants to please everyone. Whenever we call him I remember and honor your son (we still talk to the dog even though he can't hear since they say deaf dogs read your face also). We tell people about your son and his heroism when they ask what the dogs name is. Your son will never be forgotten. God Bless your family and all the troops.

My son in law is a sailor on board this new ship of the fleet. And I am so proud of him to be on a ship that is named in honor of a fellow Marine who gave his life so that others may continue the fight. My deepest thanks to Cpl Dunham's parents for sharing their son The Marine with this world.

Five years have passed since this fine young American made the ultimate sacrifice for his mates. During that time many honors have been awarded to him, articles have appeared in his memory, and many words have been written about his act of outstanding bravery and courage but at the end of the day, we recognise that his parents lost a beloved son, his family their brother and his community a valued person. We must always remember that freedom is never free, and keep the sacrifices made both by Jason and his family foremost in our minds. May you rest in peace Jason. Semper Fi.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your son Jason. His heroic actions in Iraq will always be remembered by those of us who treasure our freedom. I lost my own son Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter in Ramadi, Iraq in April to a VBIED. Coincidentally, Jason was born on the same day as me, November 10th and he died the same day that my son was killed, April 22nd. On February 20th, at the Museum of the Marine Corps, Jordan's actions will be awarded with the Navy Cross for his heroism. I'm quite certain that Jordan read of your son's unyielding bravery and heroism as he was training to be a Marine, and I am quite certain that a part of Jason was on post with my son at JSS Nasser that tragic morning....May both of their souls rest in the peace that was so hard won...

With great respect,
Christian Haerter

I wish that I had had the blessing of knowing Cpl Jason L Dunham. I join with family and friends in grieving at his passing and to remember and honor him for all he did in life and in the giving of that precious life for the life and freedom of us all. I will continue to hold his family and friends in my prayers as long as I have breath to do so. I look at our soldiers as sons and daughters to all Americans and we are so very very proud of every one of them. Thank you, Jason for all that you did to touch many in this life now and in the future. I will look forward to the day that I step into heaven and can meet you and spend some of eternity getting to know you. For now, rest in peace, son.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jason, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

Tomorrow marks the 4th anniversary of Jason Dunham's passing in 2004. The Medal of Honor awarded to him in 2007 was earned for an act of bravery in which he sacrificed his own life in order to save his fellows, but it also confirms what his family, his friends, his community in Scio and his fellow Marines knew all along - Jason was always a hero, in every respect.
Rest well Marine. Semper Fi

To the family of Cpl. Jason Dunham,
Today, as the National Museum of the Marine Corps was dedicated, The President spoke of a young Marine. A Marine who enbodies what all Marines hold sacred. Though Jason was only half my age, he is a HERO to me. As Marines, we all come from families of our own. But once we earn the title of Marine, we are Brothers to all who came before as well as those who follow. Now, Your Marine, has been given our nations highest honor. Though no medals, and no words can ease your loss, on behalf of Marines everywhere - Thank You for Jason. Happy Birthday, Jason. Happy Birthday, MARINE.

Semper Fi,
