Jean Craighead George

My condolences to the George and Craighead families. I knew her dad when he lived in Homestead and in Naples, and had met her brother, Frank Jr., at the family compound in WY. They were dedicated ecologists and conservationists before the words were part of the common vernacular. Her books did and are still doing their part to inform millions of readers of the wonders of nature and what we all stand to lose if too many humans are too ignorant of our roles and responsibilites as stewards of our natural heritage. Thank you, Jean, and your family for all you have done and continue to do for the rest of the inhabitants of this planet.

I enjoyed helping many students appreciate your books. Your legacy will live on.

"Vulpes, the Red Fox", "Meph the Pet Skunk", "Summer of the Falcon"... My brother and I loved reading Jean George's books growing up. We even hollowed out a tree trunk in the woods after reading "My Side of the Mountain"! Later our children read these, along with many of the "new" ones (like "Julie"). Now I am sharing her books with my grandchildren. As a 4th grade teacher, I read "My Side of the Mountain" and other George books with my students into the 21st century! George's message of fascination and respect for nature is timeless. Thank you, Jean, for inspiring so many people of all ages to love and respect nature through your wonderful writing!

EVERGLADES is one of my 5th graders' favorite books. They are in awe of our fragile Earth and its exquisite creatures. Our condolences to the family and friends of Jean Craighead George.
