I am MSG Stephanie Slater (US Army). A friend of mine has found what appears to be a special made dog tag for Devon in the Deschutes River in Washington. She would like to give it to his family. Please feel free to contact me if you have any information that may be helpful in giving the dog tag back to his family. Thank you. Cell: (214) 251-5579.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of PFC. Devon J. Gibbons. My heart aches for you, and you will remain in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that the deep hurt you feel can be in some part be eased by the feeling of great pride for Devon’s valor and deep sense of patriotism. He will always be remembered as an American Hero by my family and we will never forget the great sacrifice made by your family.
In spite of all that happened here in New York City that dark Tuesday morning more than seven years ago, millions continue to live and work here without fear, because of our awesome U.S. Military. We still stand tall and proud here today, thanks to wonderful people such as your Devon.
To Devon I would say you have made the ultimate sacrifice and did so willingly and without hesitation. Thank you so very much for defending my freedoms. It means so much to me, to the people of NYC and to the entire nation. Thank you for your bravery and sacrifice in the service of the country that I love so very much.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
May God be with you until we all meet at Jesus’ feet.
Most Sincerely,
Pat – NYC (6 miles from “Ground Zero”)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Devon, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Devon and Family,
Never forgotten.
August 19, 2007
There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the family and friends
I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally.
I extend to you my deepest condolences. No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.
As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Devon have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Bonnie & Mel,
I am a very good friend to your sister, Colleen. She was my shoulder to cry on when our son, Sgt. Justin Lee, US Army, was serving our beautiful country in Baghdad, Iraq. When Colleen called me to pray for Devon and your family, I was devastated. Devon is now with his Lord and other "Battle Buddies" (As our Son calls the other soliders). May our Lord keep a very gentle hand on your family in the days to come.

To the Gibbons family, our hearts go out to you all. We also lost our son June 16th while serving in Afghanistan. We understand the huge feeling of loss and brokenness that you must be feeling right now. Isn't strange how we can be so proud of our sons yet miss them so much. I know that Devon will live on in your hearts the same way Forrest will live on in ours. I believe our son would want us to continue to live life joyously, and I expect that your son would want that for you also. The challenge comes in learning how to live that life again. I wanted to attend the service for your son to show my respects and appreciation for his sacrifice, but just returned from burying our own son in Virginia. If you ever want to tell us more about Devon, I would love to hear his story.

Devon is my nephew. His mother Bonnie is my sister. I have such admiration for my sister and her husband that it cannot be put into words. I cannot imagine having to watch one of my children go through what they shared with Devon while he was in the hospital. It is something that NO one should ever have to go through. That being said they did go through it (ARE ARE STILL GOING THROUGH IT) and thousands of others shared the day to day updates via the website that my brother Dan Bligh set up. I have never seen such a 'coming together' of family and friends and complete strangers. Devon was a very loved young man. He is safe now and no longer in pain. He is missed beyond words. My sister and Mel thanked everyone for their support and prayers and I would like to add my name to the list as well. Thank you. Thank you to everyone who followed the progress, prayed and sent notes and flowers. Thank you to those of you that lined the route from the church to the cemetery holding flags and signs. It was a site to behold. Over a thousand attended the services. May God bless each and every one of you. THANK YOU! Thank you to all the members of the Armed Forces that are making sure that this great country stays free. You are in my prayers...

I pray for Devon & his family during this most difficult time.

June 30, 2006
To the Family of Pfc. Devon J. Gibbons;
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Though I only knew your son through Kathleen Burris, whose son served with Devon, I want you to know I have thought of your son and his loving family often. My son just returned last month from Iraq and I can say for those who have never seen a child graduate from Basic Training and then go on to be such great soldiers they will never know the true meaning of "PROUD". I know your hearts will always be full of pride for Devon being the hero he is to all of America. God needed another soldier to grace his heavens, so Devon is not only walking in the heavens with God, but along side with his fellow "battle buddies"(as my son calls them). I am sure as he walked through the gates of heaven he was saluted by all of his family and friends who are living in the almighty kingdom. Look forward to the day you will reunite with him. May God be with each and everyone of you. And may you feel the comfort of his arms around you during this time that Devon has left to be in his eternal home of glory.
Hold on to your memories for they can never be taken away from you.
Devon we salute you and praise you and your family for all you have sacrificed for your country.

It is with a heavy heart that I write my sympathies to your family. I did not know Devon personally, only knew OF him through my nephew, "Fitzgerald". I also am a military Mom and know how devastated I would be if my sons had to go through what Devon went through. I only hope I could follow in your footsteps and be courageous in the midst of the storm. Your family has been in my prayers and will continue to be as you deal with the changes your life will now take on. Please know that God knows what is best, even when we do not. His ways are high above our ways. Devon has joined the ranks of America's unsung heroes. He has given the ultimate sacrafice for his country, and so have you as his family. He will forever be remembered for his willingness to serve.

I know one yes from your experience is that I have been blessed through your life. I pray that you get to see more yes's in your life through the sacrifice you made for us to have freedom! The Fourth of July is coming up and on that day we celebrate your bravery and the encouragement you bring us here in America! God Bless you!

All gave some, some gave all......Devon gave it all. I will forever be grateful to him. I never got to meet him but I do know my nephew loves him like a brother. I prayed hard for Devon, his story touched my heart deeply. Bonnie and Mel, I am so sorry for your loss. It's so easy to see that your son was a beautiful person who was loved by so, so many people. God bless you all and take comfort in knowing that Devon will always be with you......he's in your heart.

Devon, you are truly a hero. No words can ever say thank you enough for making this sacrifice. Bonnie and Mel, you two are the most amazing people I have ever come across. It is my pleasure and honor to know you. Your son was such an influence on my husband and I will always remember that. Keep your faith as you have for so long. You guys deserve all the happiness life can throw at you from now on. Always thinking and praying for you.
