BERNINGER, Dr. Howard George beloved husband of Lois (nee: Smith) and the late Angela (nee Sourd), died on October 7th, 2013, at the age of 89 of Multiple Myeloma. He was the beloved son of the late, Edwin and Elizabeth (nee Doll) Berninger, a dear father of Peter, James and the late Andrew Berninger, loving step-father of Scott (Michelle Balside) and Susan Hauff, and devoted grandfather to Nicholas, Mark and Bianca Berninger. Respected brother-in-law to Larry (Gail) Smith. Uncle Howard will be missed by his nieces and nephews, children of his late brothers, Edwin and Robert Berninger and his late sister, Ruth Sander. Upon graduation from Elder High School, where he was noted for his football athleticism, Dr. Berninger graduation from U.C. Pre-med and Medical School in 1949, and trained at Good Samaritan Hospital. His studies were interrupted by the military service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Prior to opening his practice in Lebanon, Ohio, in his home in 1950, he spent two years in the U. S. Army in Korea, receiving the distinguished Bronze Star. Fulfilling his lifelong desire to live in the country, he settled on a small farm in Lebanon, Ohio, on Stubbs Mill Road and became known as the local family "doc", delivering more than 2000 babies. He retired from his practice in 1992 after 42 years of practice. Dr. Berninger took up the hobby of growing Christmas trees in 1955. He took great pride in his "cut your own tree" farm and would greatly enjoy seeing the same families return every year with their offspring to take their annual Christmas walk in the country looking for the perfect tree. He made his own ceramic Christmas tree ornaments every year to give to families when they purchased their trees. He was a life long member of the Ohio Christmas Tree Assoc. and when he had time enjoyed playing golf and bridge with his friends. Dr. Berninger will always be remembered for his kind, giving, and compassionate care to others. He has generously donated his body to science to the U.C. Medical School. A memorial service will be on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 20 A Desales Ave., Lebanon, OH 45036. As one of those many babies he delivered, I must say I found Dr. Berninger to be a fine man with a good soul. May God bless him.
