To a few people my dad could come off as a gruff and sometimes hard-headed person who showed little emotion. To those who really knew him he was a kind and caring person, who came from a generation that had very little in the way of material things but worked very hard and lived life to the fullest when his health permitted. Like so many from his generation he wasn't a hugger but his main concern was keeping his wife and children well taken care of, often working double shifts to see that we always had food and shelter. He was a proud man who would look you in the eye and never lie to you. He was an avid softball player, hunter and motorcyclist when he wasn't driving hundreds of miles a night delivering freight all over the Midwest, logging millions of miles over 35 years without a serious accident. On weekends he loved playing cards with his buddies and his opponents over a cold beer after a hotly-contested softball game. I was very fortunate to be with him on those occasions, watching him laugh and smile whether his team won or lost.. My dad was an extremely charitable man, even though he was never rich by any means, he would always send money to a variety of charities right up until his passing. He loved his wife, his kids, his grand children and his great-grandchildren. Before he lost his health he would light up when a small child would climb in his lap. When he lost his oldest daughter at a much too early age it devastated him, I don't think he ever completely recovered from her untimely passing. These last several years watching his mental and physical health deteriorate has been extremely tough on the entire family. Through it all, I'm convinced he was good and caring dad and he will be sorely missed by all who loved him.
