Julia CASEY Obituary

CASEY, Julia (Markovich)

Julia (Markovich) Casey, of Bristol, widow of Mayor James P. Casey, died on Wednesday, (October 30, 2013 at The Pines in Bristol Connecticut). Mrs. Casey, baptized Julianna, was sustained by her deep Russian Orthodox religious faith throughout her 93 years. Julia was born June 24, 1920 in Terryville, CT. She was the daughter of the late Dimitry and Mary (Kucha) Markovich, and the youngest of six children. At the age of 12, Julia lost her best friend Betty Mathes, and became the surrogate daughter to Addie and Alfred Mathes where she learned to appreciate books, poetry and American history. She graduated from Terryville High School in 1938. She worked at Seth Thomas in Thomaston, and Associated Spring in Bristol. Julia met her husband Jim in 1944, and they married in 1945. Julia was extremely supportive of her husband's political career and focused on raising four children. She constantly reminded her children of the importance of education and community service. Coming from a musically gifted family, Julia encouraged multi-part singing at home, in the car and music lessons for each of her children. She was dedicated to continuing her Carpatho-Russian traditions and especially enjoyed sharing food preparations with her children, grandchildren, and niece Mary. She loved baking and never hesitated in sharing her baking gifts with as many people as possible. Julia loved spending August in Old Saybrook with her family and when they were young. Widowed in 1965, Julia agreed to the request of Ella Grasso and Mead Alcorn to assume her husband's position as a delegate in the Connecticut Constitutional Convention. In 1966, she seconded the nomination of Governor John Dempsey. As a loyal Democrat, she continued to encourage her family's attendance at annual Jefferson-Jackson-Bailey dinners and other political events. She was a strong person who lived a purposeful life. She was a proud survivor of breast cancer and colon cancer. Julia was deeply committed to having her children graduate from college. They did. She relentlessly encouraged her grandchildren's education as well. She worked at the Zion Lutheran Church during the 1980s and Bristol Community Organization (BCO) from 1991 through 2003, retiring from BCO at the age of 83. Julia was a member of Saints Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church, Terryville Connecticut, and was a member of the Ladies Aide as well as the Sisterhood of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Julia served on the Bristol Board of Directors for the Salvation Army and was chairperson for the Bristol Chapter of the American Heart Association for many years. She was a member of the Bristol Quota Club and served as President. She was active with numerous Red Cross blood drives. Julia had four children, their spouses, seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She is survived by her daughter Marcia Casey and her husband Carl Hoss of Boston, MA; son Daniel Casey and wife Gail Hartmann, their children Ryan, Matthew, Kevin and his wife Rhiannon Soucy, and their daughter Olive; son Steven and wife Karen Casey, their children James and Katherine, and; David and wife Lisa Casey, their daughters Meaghan and Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2, at 9 a.m. from the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main Street, Terryville Connecticut to Saints Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church 34 Fairview Avenue for 10 a.m. services. Burial will be in Saints Cyril & Methodius Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Friday, November 1, from 5-8 p.m., with a memorial service at 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, P.O.
