Frederick L. Helene, 84, of West Hartford, passed away after a brief illness, on Thursday April 17, 2014, with his family by his side at St. Francis Hospital. He was the beloved husband, for 59 years, of Faith (Orenstein) Helene. Born on June 5, 1929 in Springfield, MA. To Harry W. and Augusta (Steinberg) Helene, the family moved to Framingham when he was a young boy. He graduated from Framingham High School in 1946 and went right into the Navy. He was stationed in New Orleans on a destroyer for two years. After the Navy, he entered the University of Mass. and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He worked at Hamilton Standard for many years and later was a consultant in the Electromagnetic Interference field. Frederick and Faith have been members of the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford for over 50 years. He was a member of the synagogue Brotherhood and of its Minyanaires. He was a life member of Jewish Children's Service Organization, belonged to the Jewish Assoc. of Community Living, was a summer Special Olympics volunteer for many years and was a Hadassah Associate. Frederick was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his wife Faith, he is survived by his three children: Alan Helene and his wife Marla, Robin and her husband Alex Romero, and Gary Helene and his wife Alissa, seven cherished grandchildren; Jared and Hayley Helene, Rebecca Jo Romero, Nicolette, Yukon and Sophia Helene and Spencer Landis. He also leaves, his sister-in-law Joycelle Platt and her children Lori and Jerry Rappaport and their daughters Jennifer and Elizabeth, his nephew Gordon Platt, an uncle Sam Boris and cousins Beth Boris, Phyllis and Ronald DeMaine and Barbara Cohen, several dear life-long friends, and his grand-dogs Aspen, Basil, and Tank. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at 12 noon in the chapel of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford, with Rabbi David Small officiating. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Tnpk., intersection with Jordan Lane, Wethersfield. Following interment the family will receive friends for Shiva at the Helene home in West Hartford with an evening service at their home both on Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30PM. They will be receiving on Thursday thru Friday afternoon and then again on Saturday evening and during the day on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford, CT. 06117 or to Hadassah, C/o Jessica Borden, 32 Lakeview Dr., West Hartford, 06117 or to a charity of donor's choice.
