Lucian Stanley Obituary

Lucian R. Stanley, 90, born in Hartford, CT, January 2, 1924, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Lu graduated from Hartford Public High School and the University of Hartford. He was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Snedeker) Stanley on March 1, 2006. Lu was a member of Hartford's Boy Scout Troop 18, then sponsored by American Legion Rau-Lock Post #8. He felt that his greatest achievement in his life was scouting. At age 16 he received his driver's license and the following summer, with the help of his troop members, he ran newspaper drives on Saturdays all summer. A truck was provided by Grey-Rock Soda Co. of Wethersfield. The paper drive program was so successful that the whole troop, 32 scouts plus leaders went to summer camp at Camp Pioneer in Winsted, CT for three years. In 1942, Lu joined the army and was sent to Fort Bliss, Texas. After basic training he was selected for the Army's Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and sent to the University of Oklahoma. At the close of the program, Lu was sent to join the 104th Timber Wolf Division in California. This division was the first American force to land at Cherbourg, France. Following D-Day the 104th moved to Holland, Belgium, Germany, fighting and losing men until the end. Lu received a bronze star as well as many unit citations. In 1948, with two Boy Scout buddies he went into the florist business. After 30 years he sold the shop "Lucian Florist" and began a real estate career. Lu eventually started his own firm "L R Stanley Real Estate," dealing in commercial and industrial real estate. He retired in 2006. A Bloomfield resident since 1960, he has been a member of both Bloomfield's Seniors Bowling and Golf Leagues. Lu leaves behind his daughter Gail and Bob Ignatowicz and their children Haley and Ryan of Ashford, and his son Bob Stanley and his wife Lynne and their daughter Lilly of Granby. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be a memorial service Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at The First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, 10 Wintonbury Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002, at 2:00 p.m. Being a florist, Lu asked for "Lots of Flowers." Please send them in water so that the area nursing homes can enjoy them. OLAY! Donations in his memory may also be made to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202 or Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Old Iron Ore Road, Bloomfield, CT 06002. I am sorry to read about Mr. Stanley. On several occasions we played as partners at the South Windsor Community Center Duplicate Bridge Game on Wednesdays, and it was always an enjoyable afternoon.
