Robert W. Riley Jr, 86, formerly of Rocky Hill, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. He was the beloved husband of 61 years of Armida (Russo) Riley. Born in Hartford, he was the son of Robert W. Riley and Mary (Mansfield) Riley. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Merchant Marines. Robert joined the Rocky Hill Police Department in 1962 and by 1977 was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief of Police until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the VFW and the Police Chief's Association. He was a very meticulous man and loved cars. Besides his wife, he leaves behind his beloved niece, Marie E. Russell and sister-in-law, Phyllis R. Russell, with whom he resided with for the past 3 years. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Rev. Robert T. Russo of St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, CT, nephews and nieces, Robert F. Russell and his wife Rosemarie, Karen Veinot of North Carolina, Carol Russo of California, Michael J. Bazzano, Mathew J. Bazzano and his wife Tracy, great nieces, Hannah and Maria Bazzano, many very dear friends, and his constant companion, his dog, Carly. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Riley. A Prayer service will be held at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St, Rocky Hill on Tuesday, 12 noon, January 28. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the funeral home 10-12noon, just prior to the prayer service. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. The family would like to give a special thanks to the caregivers, doctors and nurses on floor 3.6 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for their loving, compassionate care.
